Forum Discussion / Access denied - Suggestion
« on: September 13, 2013, 09:19:48 am »
Guessing that those of us with Access Denied issues can't read the responses to the other posts being made on that topic, I know I can't - perhaps use social media to post the issue/resolution, until it's fixed?

General Discussion / To the Community - Dezza steping down
« on: September 10, 2013, 08:49:03 am »

Dear Layonara Community,

To the people I have spent so much of my online time with for such a long time I have to announce that I am not only resigning from the Lead GM position but from being a GM completely. I must apologise for this, I had fully intended to continue my role and run the Rise of the Praefuries series which I was quietly excited about.

Things being as they are, work, family and some new writing opportunities have finally taken their toll on my online time and I cannot in good conscience maintain the sort of committment required to help make Layonara a great place to be from a GM perspective.

I realise many of you have relied heavily on me for your character development, your quest fixes, your cdq's, advice on progression, etc, etc and these are the sorts of things I love the most to do for this community and I feel it deeply that I cannot continue that for you.

I will still be around, but not in the capacity that I once was. For this, I apologise. I guess all things must come to an end eventually.

See you in game.

Dezza (Aka Canuslupis)

General Discussion / Welcome back!
« on: February 29, 2016, 10:54:39 am »

It's been a little while! For some of us this has been the longest we've been separated from the Layo website for a very long time! We hope everyone got by alright in the mean time with our limited forms of communication.

For those of you just getting the details of what happened and why we were out so long here's the event in a nutshell: A few weeks ago the hard drive that housed all the data for the website, IRC and a few other aspects of Layonara suffered a critical failure. Evaluation of the drive later revealed that the drive suffered physical damage to the drive itself, and the failure wasn't just a matter of corruption or some other kind of software malfunction, as we're probably used to seeing. When this kind of thing happens, it becomes very difficult to retrieve any data. To compound matters, because the site was still being adjusted, off-server backups were not up to where they needed to be.

A poll/pledge was taken via social media from the community as a whole, as to whether or not we should attempt to have the drive rebuilt and the data retrieval attempted, given the steep expense associated with such an effort. This was met with a pretty resounding 'meh'; the community seemed willing to help if the cause was important, but since the data lost was mostly in forum posts, no one seemed particularly anxious about getting that data back. This is an absolutely fine decision and as such we have rebuilt the site from our last save point.

As an aside, it was asked earlier on via social media, whether or not any MMO data/work had been lost as well. We just want to reassure everyone that all of the MMO data that was stored on the same server was actually well backed up and none has been lost. This repository has since been restored. The NWN servers and all their data were unaffected. The bulk of the loss was suffered by the community in posts and our frequently used services. Several months of posts were lost, but in truth, it could have been much worse.

The latest backup seems to have brought us forward to early March (though the back up is listed with an April date for us). This means there will be a lot of necessary reworking on our parts as well as yours. We want to note a few things for you to keep in mind that will help us all get back to normalcy as soon as possible. First of all, there are a lot of tweaks done to the site previously that need re-doing, and as such you may see some slower load times, slower responses all together and things of this nature. Not all functions may be fully operational, and some things that existed before the crash may be missing. All of this really will be a process of adjusting will probably happen over many months (just like our original switch-overs from previous versions of our website) until we feel like it's as good as it can get. The immediate difference was noticed last time by the community when we moved over, so we wanted to point that out now to remind folks that this part will take some time.

As mentioned above, we have some other features that were lost or crippled in the data loss. The most noticeable of this is likely to be the NWN character imports though we are hoping to restore them in the near future. Right now we can't make any promises or give an estimated time frame, but we -are- hoping that the replacement coding will be finished soon. Everyone is working very hard in their available time to get things back to what we have become used to as 'the basics', and so that we can start moving forward into progress once again!

Another really notable issue is the loss of character applications/approvals during the time covered by the lost data. As was mentioned before, we're not going to rescind the approval of these characters but we need them resubmitted as soon as possible. We'll try to push those applications through as fast as possible so that it's no longer a concern for anyone. If you're unsure if youre character(s) might be affected, please do a quick search of the approved characters and see if your character is listed there with an approval. We will also be getting a list from the database to contact people directly but anyone who can get the process started sooner would be greatly appreciated. Please note somewhere in the top of your biography that you are re-approving when you submit! More information will be available on this topic in a later post but here is no need to wait if you happen to have a copy of the application saved and ready to post up.

So onto the other side of all that happened...

We did move our hosting services of the website server, which splits the website and NWN servers to two different places. IceDragonDuvessa was able to help us negotiate a great price on a dedicated server where she works with good services, data redundancy and online backups to protect us from a future catastrophic loss as we just experienced. As well, we've developed a better plan for the leadership team side of things to further protect us from potential losses, which we hope will mitigate the complications from any future event as much as possible.

For those of you who used the IRC service, it is back on-line as well. Everyone who has access to special, team-related channels will have to re-register their nicknames, as the IRC server had to be rebuilt from scratch. Remember that the command for registering is: /msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email> (changing the relevant details). Here is the basic information you'll need to get reset up if you need it. It probably goes without saying you should not share your password if you do not wish to share your handle.

Anyone with needs for permissions in special channels (Ex. GMs) will need to register their handle before permissions can be granted. Once you have registered please /query Dorganath and let him know who you are (if necessary). You will need to do this for your alternate handle if you need for that handle to also have permissions to restricted or private channels (such as a log in from a work address). People who do not need permissions are not required to have their handles registered, though you are more than welcome to lock them down via registration.

Two really important notes! First, if you have your log in to Layonara's IRC channel set to auto log in, and you auto-log into permissioned channels before you have necessary permission, the server will ban you from those channels and Dorganath will have to release you from ban before the invite to special channels can happen. This will not stop you from registering nor logging into the main NWN channel, but keep in mind the process may take a few minutes depending on what Dorganath is doing at the moment. Secondly, make sure that when you initiate a query to him to handle permissions and/or ban problems, that you have a good amount of time available to wait, just in case! If people log in and ask for permissions and log out before response is made, we can't help you.

In other news, related to our return to the website: We'd like to make sure that you have had a chance to read our thread on the new Fortune System found here. This goes over in detail what the system does, how it works and some up coming additions we have planned for it's use. Additionally there is an FAQ going up for this system soon so please feel free to ask questions over there so we might build a better guide in the long run.

One more thing: We should all thank Dorganath, Orth and OneSt8 for the tremendous amount of work over the last few weeks getting all of this organzied and ready to go! They are still hard at it making everything work like we've come to expect (for good or ill) and a lot of kudos are deserved.

As always, if you have questions please reply here. Otherwise, welcome back once again and get comfortable!

Roleplaying / Mentoring
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:24:32 am »
THE FLETCHERS

If you stay for anytime in the Bullseye Tavern you are being watched.  Rumours have it that green adventurers are being recruited by a loosely nit group of experienced individuals for purposes unknown.  Its a shady group and not much is known about their leadership or motives.

They watch and wait and when the time is right they appoach their target.  This group known as the Fletchers named after the Bulls Eye Tavern in which they recruit is elusive but not entirely hard to find.  They seek apprentices.  Some seek to mold young followers into their religious exploits, others to train them in the arts of war seeing their potential, others have more nefarious reasons to mentor the ones they chose, some mearly seek to make some trues or ask for favors in the form of a future a debt to be paid through blood or other means.

The Fletchers are heard to sometimes play a game of darts to see who gets the new blood and so the story goes the apprentices are called Darts.  The Fletcher and his Dart.  A bond.  A trust.  To some a contract.  Wait long enough in the Bulls Eye and if you have what it takes you too may be approached.  Choose wisely and you will be rewarded.

//The Fletchers is a mentoring group for new players to enter into an in game relationship with an established player to help you get familiar with Layonara's vast world.  By signing up to be a Fletcher the established player agrees to show the new player/character around the world of layonara, help him in game with quests, educate the new player regarding lore, help him to meet and rp with other characters in game.  Out of character (OOC) the established player agrees to answer tells, pms and other questions from the new player to help them adjust and learn how to get around Layonara.  New players are not required to join this mentoring program.  It is purely voluntary.  The mentoring relationship can begin at any level but will end upon the character reaching level 10 to allow the established player to take on a new recruit.  In game relationships ofcourse will endure for however long the players choose.

New players please see the below sign up sheet for established players willing to be Mentors.  New players please pm one mentor from the below sign up sheet of their choosing to initiate the mentoring process.  You can choose whomever you like if they have an opening.  The class, race, religion, alignment and gaming schedule should be considerations for whom you choose.  Once chosen the Fletcher and his dart should make their first in game meeting at the Bully Eye Inn in Center.

The following Mentors offer their services below:

Layonara Server / Housing sweep -- One Week Warning -- Everyone Read
« on: June 19, 2012, 12:13:07 am »
OK, after much delay (and some forgetfulness), I've gone ahead and done my own sweep of housing. This is a pretty simple sweep, based solely on activity level. To be specific, if the owner of a house has not logged in within the last 12 months, I have added that house to the following list:

On West:
101|102|104|113|115
118|120|127|130|133
[strike]136[/strike]|139|142|144|[strike]145[/strike]
[strike]146[/strike]|157|159|172|176
179|183|186|188|
On Central:
203|209|211|213|218
219|221|227|230|232
235|236|237|238|239
240|242|
[strike]246[/strike]|251|253
259|261|262|264|
Check these lists carefully.  If you still maintain access to one of these houses, you will need to either make arrangements to buy the house, present a solid reason for a transfer or vacate any possessions you wish to keep that may reside within.  Otherwise, the homes will be released back to the market starting in about a week.

For any homes that should not be released, post below with the following:

Address:
Character Name:
Proposed action:
Justification:

For clarity, this is not for people to start bidding or making a case for houses.  This is an avenue for people with an existing legitimate claim to a particular house to assert that for consideration. For example, if the house was owned by your character's spouse but the player has left or the spouse has permed, this would constitute a legitimate claim.  There are other possibilities, of course, and they will be evaluated on a case-by-case.

If you are just trying to get in line to buy a house, I will not entertain any such requests here.  Anyone without some reasonable claim can attempt to purchase a house through the in-game process.

When these houses do go back on the market, please have some consideration for other players before snatching up houses simply for more guild/personal storage, and please observe the "one house per character" request, in letter and spirit (i.e. a pair of spouses don't need a pair of houses). Give everyone a shot at the beneficial opportunities that player housing offers.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Under-used Areas
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:47:07 am »
I have found through discussions that some areas appear to be quite under-used.  Or mainly only used as a place to quickly pass through to get elsewhere.  One  example:  Hurm.  The port city has no crafthall.  The surrounding areas have so little in the way of cnr, yet the area is populated with such nice scenery.  There are forts and small populated areas (Towns if you can call them that) Orc's Watch, Bloody Gate, Lans Port, Stone, Wolfwood is huge, High Pass Fort, Xora's Tower, Thorns Keep, Audria, , the place outside Audria only reachable by ship and I'm sure there are a great many others.  So much beauty and work that the Creators and the player base have made that are seen so little of.

Would it be alot of work to put at least maybe one Static Quest person in these places?  And maybe someone like a town cryer (That doesn't shout all the time) but someone in charge that could tell a story or brief history of the place?

Something like this would promote more wandering, share a bit more history with the populace on whats been done by the player base.  It would also get groups out to other places instead of the regular grind of the cnr.  With these places spread all over the map, more folk would be spending more time doing that and less grinding the deep or the Forest of Fog.

Sure, the low levels see alot of Center and the surrounding countryside, but when you get up in your teens, it becomes "Old Hat" and you fall into the CNR grind run.  Maybe make them level specific to prevent lower levels from wiping them out early.

Say for instance .... My char Melody ... when she reaches lvl 15, it would be something like ...

"Well Miss, you sure have made a name for yourself around Center and Port Hempstead, your skills have greatly improved over the years, maybe you should get out and see more of the world, as there are so many other places to see and many more folk that may need a person with skills such as yours ..."

You folk have put alot of work in into creating this wonderful place, and the player base has made alot of history there,  I can understand the Great Library not annotating these things, but if there was an NPC at each place that told a brief story about thier location (What town wouldn't be proud of their accomplishments?) It would encourage others to have their characters to do the same and/or appreciate what players have done to make the world such as it is.

Just a thought, a possibility, that came to me after the server crashed :)

Layonara Server / Server status -- 29-May-2012 (CDT)
« on: May 29, 2012, 08:26:51 pm »
Hello all,

I'm letting everyone know that there are presently what looks to be some severe network lag/timeout issues affecting the game servers.  The pings to the server are very good but they randomly drop out for anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes, apparently.

The physical server has been rebooted and both game servers have been restarted.  At this point, there's nothing we can do.  Game play will be difficult at best and hazardous at worst until the problem is worked out.  Consider this your warning; this qualifies as a known lag event, so any Soul Strand loss, item loss or other negative effects are non-reimbursable.

Both servers are up, but I cannot guarantee stability. Play at your own risk.

We'll continue to monitor the situation.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Seen around Belinara...
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:02:30 pm »
After the retreat of the Cult's troops back in Kuhl, Steel practically disappeared from Belinara. Lately, however, he has been spotted more and more often around the Hilm Protectorate and Nesar. His return to Belinara coincides with further unrest within Hilm. They say that blood follows the demon of Leringard, but very few have actually seen the masked devil draw his sword- at least, few that are still living.

One way or the other, he's returned to Belinara for a reason...

Rumour Has It / Orc encounter at Saddlebag Pawnshop in Haven City
« on: April 24, 2012, 04:23:15 pm »
Dot enters the pawnshop ready to do inventory and catch up on sales. In the main hall stands an orc (Gulduz). Axe hefted on his shoulder. Dot confronts him but there seems to be a language barrier. After some posturing and chest puffing Gulduz approaches Dot and reaches for her hand (arm). Dot tries to recoil but fails and he grabs her. So (naturally for Dot) she responds with a punch. Gulduz falls back in a heap, knocked out cold..... Dot drags him out the front door and tosses him into the street. She whistles loudly as Warrant Officer Kit passes. Telling Kit that this Orc came at Dot and grabbed her in the pawnshop and that she knocked him out and tossed him out into the street.

(having no DM around no one played Kits reaction... im curious as to what it would have been.)

Gulduz came to and mumbled in some broken common about Dot being a strong human and his ancestors would not forget her and many gifts would come to her. Then Gulduz headed south towards the Desert.

//Dot doesnt know Gulduz by name or vise versa. But Gulduz was still lying on the ground when Dot called Kit over.

//turns out he just wanted to use the portal... hehe ;) But that never was articulated in a way that was understoon.... It was fun RP thanks gilshem. It warranted a bump from an XP wand IMO. ;)

General Discussion / orth checking in.
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:14:20 am »
Hello friends, old and new. It's been a while since I've been able to sit down and take a breath but I promised myself I would take the time to catch up on what I've been up to and some of the things that have to be done on the technical end over the coming month.

To start, I wanted to say that Layonara is with my heart every day. The friends I made and the moments I shared in its fantasy setting will be cherished moments I'll hold through my whole life with no regret. The past year I've been at a distance, occasionally trying to force my way back into the magic that I know makes me feel like only roleplaying can make me feel. It's been there for short whiles but real world priorities get in the way and days away become weeks and then months. I'm not going to try to explain nor am I sure I even know why, it just happens.

Life's been pretty good. I've become a bit of a sports nut, I even bought season tickets to the Blue Jays for this summer. Nothing new on the love side of things, though a kiss stolen here and there. Work has had me with a lot less time than I was afforded a few years ago but I remain physically and mentally very healthy.

As with playing, my desire for working on the MMO has had to be forced and again other worldly concerns leave me getting side tracked then ultimately not having the fortitude to jump back into the development. I am making progress in a core area though and when I can catch a breath and bare down for the final touches I'll be eager to move on to the areas that others have continued to bear down upon.

Over the coming month there's going to be a few headaches from the technical end. One of our servers is old and has to be updated, this means I have to make a decision to either stay with our existing server setups or consider moving all of our servers to a cloud based setup. I've not made that decision yet and it's a pretty complicated one as Dorganath would be able to attest to as we discussed it on IRC. Once I make that decision I will get a better idea of downtime for all our servers, web, irc, nwn etc.

I touched on the core area I'm working on with the MMO and that's focused on the web end of things. Using the versatility and module rich Drupal CMS I'm developing both a front end to a new updated community site and a back end to the MMO database structure. This could mean some heavy work needed on LORE and perhaps *cringe* if I'm really feeling adventurous, I would transfer the entire forum to drupal's forum. Alternatively there are modules that allow both vBulletin and Drupal work side by side. I wonder, do any of you have Drupal experience?

So I guess that's kind of it for my update. I'll be informing you via the Important World Announcements forum about server downtimes as soon as I can possibly know and with as advanced notice as possible. I apologize in advance if this gets in the way of some scheduled quests.

My best,
James

Layonara Server / Version 3.30.8 is online!
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:01:04 pm »
Version 3.30.8 is online!

Hello all, it's been a while and there are some things that needed some attention, so here goes...

Please note there are no downloads required for this update.

 Changes:
 • Dogma and deity relations information added to Shrine to Prunilla in Center
 • Fort of Last Hope has been rebuilt
 • Forest Giant cave terrain adjusted to lessen the exploitable pinch point
 • House remodel for 150 Krandor
 • 150 Krandor moved to Port Hempstead
 • House remodel for 151 Port Hempstead Fields
 • Completely remove the last dependence on the old Talus Listener (voice commands) (1)
Fixes:
 • Restore missing transition to Shadison Viper temple exterior
 • Fix the number of uses for Stuffed Rice Cakes (2)
 • Fix infinitely repeating encounter in the Great Forest
 • Fix blueprint resref for the Black Pony creature, which prevented it from properly spawning
 • Fix damage on Flame Strike
 • Fix exit from North Point Craft Hall
 • Fix missing auto-close scripts in North Point areas
New stuff:
 • New go-between area to connect the Fort of Last Hope, its Outskirts and the Shadison Viper exteriors
Notes:
• The Talus Listener system was what we used to process voice commands before NWN version 1.69.  Since then, we have been using NWN's built-in chat handling events in parallel. Using NWN to handle chat is both faster and works with more characters. Though primary processing has gone through NWN's handlers for some time, we still relied on the Talus system to manage a list of command verbs that were stored in a configuration file on the server. This update removes the need for this and brings that function to be fully internal to NWNScript. As of this update, the /o syntax for voice commands will no longer be functional.
 • Existing Stuffed Rice Cake items will not be automatically affected.  This fix only applies to newly-crafted Stuffed Rice Cakes.
Thanks this time go also to Alatriel, Eorendil and Script Wrecked for their contributions as well as everyone who made suggestions or bug reports.

Enjoy!
