Character Submissions / Exotic Race Submissions - read here first.
« on: July 08, 2016, 11:12:40 am »
As of right now Exotic Race applications are now re-opened!We will be placing a few restrictions on their submission though, in an effort to keep these characters sufficiently rare to reflect their uniqueness in the world. These restrictions apply to the following races:Wemics
Brownies
Dark Elves
Sea ElvesHalf-orcs, half-giants and half-ogres are no longer viable as PCs, as they would have to start adventuring at too old an age. Please read the following guidelines for exotic race submissions:-Submissions for exotic races will be limited in number to one(1) per person per month and four(4) per month total.
-Three(3) days prior to the end of the month a random date and time will be selected for the opening of submissions for the following month. A d4 will be rolled to indicate the date (so submissions will always open within the first four days of the month) and a d24 will be rolled for the time, always quoted in GMT to avoid confusion (so a roll of 13 would be 1pm GMT). The time will be announced in this thread.
-The first four posts, according to their time stamp, will be the submissions reviewed. The others will be given five days for the submitter to save their work, and then deleted to keep the forum organized.
-The threads will also be numbered 1-4, to indicate which thread gets priority in review; 1 being first in line, 4 being last.
This system was devised to limit the flow of exotic characters in to the world, and to give all time zones the fairest chance of getting their submission in first. The policy may be amended if a more efficient process is identified and agreed upon.I also would like to note that exotic races are still subject to the RP consequences that NPCs of the same race are. Namely, rampant hatred, bigotry and/or animosity from the "common" races. That being said, have a great time!Cheers,Gilshem

Development Journals and Discussion / Gel'larian's Musings
« on: November 11, 2011, 04:56:18 pm »
This is my attempt to keep track of what I have done, and what I do, so that if people ask me, I do not come off as an entity of whimsy.  My life changed a great deal after the fifty years spent at the Breath of the Muse painting, writing poetry and playing music.  After I met Zarianna, I settled in a city for the first time, and my mind turned to more foucsed pursuits.  I poured a great deal of concentration in to arrow-making, even gaining some small fame as I was asked to judge a competition of arrow-making.  My work with the artists involved lead to being granted a Band of Insight.

Since then I have been engaged in a long-term project I have named to Saga.  I have been collecting legends, myths and folk tales from my travels, and visits to both the Great Library and Spellgard.  I then inscribe these stories on arrows.  Eventually I will train a bow with these arrows, so that the stories will occur as I fire the arrows.  The bow will be a little like a living repository of story and myth.  Who knows, perhaps the magic will behave in relationship to the target producing unique combinations.  I think that would be interesting, but I will leave that to more wizarding people than I.

I have been trying to develop my spell-singing, but it comes slowly.  I have been able to support people like Andrew in singing profound magic.  Mostly I use it to touch people's hearts.  Whether is be to clear them of the confusion emotion can create, or guide their insights, or even use the Heartsong to make them "brighter" targets.  More and more though, I feel the desire to use my song to affirm life, rather than disrupt it.  Perhaps this is because of my dealings with vampires.

Vampires.  A dark side of the heart.  They make me rage.  And it is more than what happened to Zarianna.  Perhaps it hearkens me back to my forgotten time in the Gloom Wood.  Perhaps they are anathema in my esteem, seeming to mock the brightness of my goddess.  Whatever the cause, something awoke in me in the Crypt of the Ancient Lich, and its flame burns brighter everyday.

I have spent a better part of a year searching out vampire enclaves and destroying them as best as I could.  Krandor, and its Corathite cult; Arindor's Demise with its stained past, and finally the work of Caleron Gildman.

Gildman is a unifying figure for me.  On the one hand, his passion for vampire slaying surpasses even mine.  He lived a solitary life, filled with grim exploits.  In a religion that is filled with those that shy from violence, I find someone, like me, who is willing to fight and die for what is right.  I walk his path in the hope to learn some of the wisdom he accumulated.

On the other hand, Gildman is the focus of my quest to unearth the forgotten beauty of this world.  I have encountered resistance to this, having been told that there are battles to be fought against immediate evil, but I believe that to fight for life, we must have something to live for.  What better than inspiring works of prfound beauty.  And so this is what has lead me in to Caleron's life.

This must signal a sea change for I have become involved in other things since then.   I aided in a divination of relics I found, mostly being guided through, but I think I learned something of how to fortify such attempts.

When hunting the remains of the vampire Lannathul, I studied the regional plants on the way, took samples and have studied the propeties of the blood ferns for alchemical, medicinal and culinary uses.  I have learned about imbuing Al'Noth in to items through the heartsong.  I am currently trying to devise techniques for proper excavations of delicate sites, so that I might penetrate but not damage ancient places.

I have pored out enough on this page that I fear that those who read it will assign the very reputation I have tried to avoid, so I will let it rest for now.  Currently though, I am heading to Blackford and then the Great Library to read about the preservation of antiquities, specifically parchments and papyrus.

...from a group of Heartsong Archers passing through that one of their numbers, an absentee, has asked for some of them to join him in Lor.  From the sounds of it they are not keen travellers, but even if they were they do not seem to keen to go trekking off in to the deep parts of the isles.

Wild Surge Inn / A Commotion in the Kitchen
« on: September 13, 2011, 11:24:47 am »
It is a quiet morning at the Wild Surge, with few customers in the common room at that time.  Gel'larian makes his way amongst the kitchen staff, many whom know him from decades of patronage at the inn.  Their relations are still cool though as the elf often keeps his business to himself, leaves and then is not seen for days, weeks, months or years.  He patiently waits for the mill to be free, and once it is, takes a sack of corn to grind in to meal.  He work patiently, studying the flow of grain as it funnels in to the mill, a quiet whistle escaping his lips.  A small tab of white paper peeking out from behind the mill cathces his attention, and on a whim he fishes a note out from behind the mill.  He casually unfolds it and scans it.  As his expression becomes stone and he folds the note up, and puts it in a pocket.  He finishes his grinding, goes to the press and produces a bottle of oil, make several batches of dough, and then bakes wonderful smelling bread.  He leaves a loaf of rye bread for the inn, and then heads out to speak with Ragrian.

Ragrian?  I was just wondering, do you know anyone by the name of Rupert?

Development Journals and Discussion / The Book of the Rising Star
« on: September 09, 2011, 11:34:42 am »
[indent]And so it happened, I emerged from my cocooning within the walls of the human fortress.  I was carried to the brink of existence's precipice, looked over the edge, and saw only light.  They had no answer for the highborn blood in my veins.  I flows thicker and hotter than before, its strength becoming an irresistible wave to wash away all that stands before me.

My new strength is not only from the trial of the body.  Illumination becomes me.  I see the fear that lesser races have of us.  They give me strength.  They give me power.  They see a future when I am their master and it moves them.  I thought, in the beginning, that they deserved my wrath.  For touching my hallowed skin, for sullying my garb, for thinking they could break me.  I pity them now, lost, fearful, lonely children they are.

I am a guide.  I shall show them the truth.  They will understand.  There is no room for them amongst us, the highborn.  They must be shown this, and then depart, as free men, secure in the knowledge that they serve a higher order.

My deep kin would have them all die beneath the yoke, but I feel they do not yet appreciate the responsibility we, the highborn, possess.  If a child acts out, you do not dash it on the rocks, you instruct, you correct, you show the path of righteousness.  My surface kin would stand apart, or mix among them, and this is also in error.  We must enforce our stature, we must remind the lessers of their place, and let them come to the correct conclusion.

It is time, I have learned the path in the arms of my enemy, and it must now be walked.

Development Journals and Discussion / The Choices Made
« on: July 08, 2011, 05:32:35 pm »
The first night after the mission in Center, young Cormac is the first watch around the campfire. He could have been second and third with the nerves he had. A ghoul's bite is more easily healed in body than soul you see and the clatter of bones was loud in his ear.

A strange place, with strange friends; such a strange life!  Could his father have known the stories that would already be written? That revelation we will save for later, for now we are only concerned with the number of people at this campfire. You and I see five: bold Mari, kind Rae, wise Bart, and the mighty Lady Daniella and young Cormac. Five, no more, no less, right?  Perhaps to you and me, but young Cormac, for the very first time is considering a sixth person. How? Who? What for young Cormac? Wait!  He looks to be ready to tell us. Let's listen and see:

Um.. Well.. Thank you Toran for being there.. When Lady Daniella and Rae asked for your help. I don't think I would be here if it weren't for them. Um... That's it..

Is it young Cormac? You don't seem sure. Feeling queer? Not sure if your sixth friend is real or not? Oh well, no answers tonight. Sleep if you can, or at least, look at the stars.

Word spreads across the desert that an elven traveller, dressed like a city-dweller yet not out of sorts, was seen hearding towards the Twin Lion Ruins.  To any that spoke with him on the road, he said that he was looking for treasures of beauty in a part of the desert lost to the memory of humans.

The Silver Buckle / In the Dark of Night
« on: May 04, 2011, 10:11:09 am »
The night is a still one.  The lapping of water on to the nearby docks is punctuated by the gentle sounding of the bells on the buoys.  Candles burned low in the wire cage on the stage inside the Silver Buckle and a lone figure sat on the bench, sipping the last of his hosts proferred ale.  He sat as a statue, barely breathing, taking in every minute change in the sonic atmosphere that every building created.  The unique mix of air flow, boards settling and distant movement of inhabitants.

It was if the building were a life unto itself, possessed of breath, warmth and definitely memory. Gel'larian closed his eyes and sent himself back to a time long before, when the war against Bloodstone still raged, and he was barely an adult, still waiting to discover his passion for archery or bowyery, his sojourn to the Breath of the Muse a laughable idea, his love for Zarianna being held by another.

He opened his eyes and tried to remember where the bar had been when the Freelancer's had been the inhabitants.  Looking at the walls in place, that now define the sanctum of Elohanna's ward, he recalled meeting a beautiful barmaid that spun a tale of fantastic proportion: women bound as riders, travelling the threads, love and woe, excitement.  That story nourished him as he trekked across Alindor, then Rilara.  It gave him courage as he spied those Raksasha, reminded him that heroes must live another day as well.

A laugh escaped as he recalled waking up at the Bindstone from that encounter, and the memory of actually enjoying the brush with death.  It had pushed him to write a silly song that he had only peformed once.

How did it go?

More mutters as he spins around to the face the keyboard.  A few keys are pressed in a haphazard fashion.  Chords are tested for their ability to jog a feeling or impression.  Eventually he alight upon a familiar beginning, and a satisfied grin dances to the surface.

Thats it.

The dance of his fingers refines itself, until an old structure comes in to relief.  The elf hums a little as he becomes more and more familiar, the memory seeming to come not from his mind, but his muscles.  On reflex his hum becomes words.

Now here's a story, 'bout a little bitty elf,
Aw shucks I think thats me.
Been travelling 'round this old world,
Happy as can be.

Happy that is until I went,
and found myself some strife.
One of Bloodstone's evil demons,
Done tried to take my life.

The lyrics escape him again, and he hums a little more.  Demons, demons, demons: A Balor wreathed in flames rising from a hilltop in the Goblin Wastes, tearing him apart.  No fond memories there.

He shakes it off and finds his tune had become more haunting and drew some of the light from the candles.  He smiled and made a silly turn in the musics progression and the candles flare up a little.  He refuses the call of the woeful past, and instead folds his hands in his lap listening to the silence once more.  Ebbing vibrations from the piano.  A rat in a dark corner of the pantry.  A rustle from the newest guest of Elohanna's ward.

Indeed, no time for introspection anymore.  If he had learned anything from the human bard who now called himself master of this inn, it was to savor the present.  And so it goes, and so it should be.  Once more he places his hands on the keys, and letting the cooling sensation of the ivory excite his fingertips, he begins to play.

Heedless of the volume he trots out a majestic tune, his eyes closing as the sound swells.  Reid promised him a duet.  Time to remind him.
