Rumour Has It / During one of Kurn’s most
« on: September 16, 2015, 09:53:45 pm »

During one of Kurn’s most recent inquiries he is directed by Reus, Healer of Rofirein to one of the departments overseeing confiscated contraband because he heard word of a small ship being forfeited in a smuggling hearing. Kurn learns that the ship in question is Chebec class, a small and fast three-masted vessel with both square and lateen sails, commonly used by pirates and smugglers. It has six ballistae, 3 port and 3 starboard. It also has a platform in the fore to accommodate two spell casters.  It is a 120 ton vessel and is about the smallest size ship that could stand up to the Pirate Carrack class ship he has infiltrated, which sits at approximately 600 tons, has four masts, 20 ballistae, and has a crew of approximately 400 Pirates. Even having disabled most of the Pirate ship’s siege weapons, the Chebec would have an extremely tough time with the vessle... even if she sailed against it with a full crew.

He found a ship... but now the problems. The Rofirein temple is not going to release it. They have it scheduled to go to auction in two weeks. The ship also requires a minimum crew of 75 professional sailors to operate and can accommodate up to 200 sailors and marines. Asking around a little more he finds that the auction price is expected to be somewhere around 500,000 True. Sailors also have to be hired and paid.

During his duties on the Pirate vessel he learns that they will soon be making a trip to Arnax via Lor. The captain has been tight lipped about why. Scuttlebutt is there is a slave delivery being made to the City of Screams. Kurn also learns that his pirate vessel is independent of WT trading and the Halflings... in fact "business relations" are a little strained at the moment.

The shadow waits and watches… patient. Oblivious to the gnats that buzz about her head, she sees the same legitimate business activities day after day. Occasionally though she sees other interesting things. Insurance company officials inspecting cargo, and when they leave the cargo being unloaded and bricks and straw re-loaded into the boxes before the wagons depart. She sees men hustled into the main office by knife wielding Halflings that never come back out. She also notices quite a bit of goblin traffic to and from the business.

*A letter bearing the official seal of The Reaching arrives via courier… addressed to Sibbicai.

I am writing to you on behalf of Demisa Shimrastri. Your investigation and findings do indeed indicate a wild magical disturbance has been found. Although dangerous, it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the wonders of the Al’Noth. Our understanding at this time is that this appears to be a natural event, a manifestation of the ebb and tide of the Al’Noth… therefore we will not be sending any official representatives to return it to the flow at this time. There is nothing that should prevent you and your group from attempting to do so though, as long as it is done with respect and in a way that does no harm to the Al’Noth. (She then outlines a process for a group to perform a ritual for returning of the anomaly.)

May Lucinda watch over your endeavors,

Andily, Assistant to Demisa Shimrastri

//The GM team is developing a RP process for allowing a group to try this. It can have consequences though…and once you begin you will have to take the good with the bad. It will be very hard, even for a group, and may hinge on dice rolling. A group improves the chances, but we have decided that no more than 5 can take part in the attempt, although others can be present for the event to lend moral support and good RP. The mechanical process is geared for individual attempts only. If you guys decide to go this route, please post the appropriate RP in the forum thread and I will set a date to calendar for an in game session. Due to the difficulty, a success will result in significant reward for both those returning it, and those present for moral support and RP. Please disregard the previous "1 fortune" mentioned. A success will garner more...

Rumour Has It / Daniel notices on the way
« on: September 15, 2015, 10:22:05 pm »

Daniel notices on the way back to the shop there are quite a few other homesteads, farms, and shops within about a 5 mile radius of the Angel's building that are similarly affected. A couple of families are living in tents temporarily. You are a little concerned for their safety and hope they have no encounters with the local wildlife... or worse. When you finally arrive with the new copper door you notice that vines are now covering a good portion of the building sides. You hope their weight does not endanger the rapidly deteriorating structural integrity of the building.

After about a week of investigation, spell casting, and repairing Daniel is startled and almost jumps out of his cod piece when the front door falls onto the floor when the hinges pull loose from rotten door framing. (Crash!)

Ask A Gamemaster / Dornick the Ox Merchant walks
« on: September 12, 2015, 10:57:51 pm »

Dornick the Ox Merchant walks up in a huff, slaps the ox on the rear with his stick and yells "Git! He herds the wayward livestock back to the corral, but on his last trip looks around discreetly, and when he sees nobody close reaches down and picks up a kitty and murmurs to it quietly as he feeds it a little treat. "Wanna come home with daddy?" Grumpy livestock merchant and new feline friend both disappear in the direction of the oxen enclosure…

Rumour Has It / A couple of travelers passing
« on: September 12, 2015, 10:50:55 pm »

A couple of travelers passing by the Angel's building in Port Hempstead Fields look at it and chuckle. "Looks like they are falling on hard times." The other responds, "Aye, you'd think they'd have a little pride in keeping up the establishment. Hope their goods are no reflection of that." He smiles and chuckles again as they disappear around a bend in the road.

Rumour Has It / As “Q” rides out he notices
« on: September 12, 2015, 10:04:58 pm »

As “Q” rides out he notices that nearly every manmade wood structure in the general area seems to be infected with rot, some advanced, some less so. He sees a lot of wild overgrown vegetation too, and is not too sure if it is new or if he just never noticed it before. The further from the Angel’s building he gets, the less rot he sees. After several miles he notices nothing. When he arrives at the Angel's hall in Port Hempstead he finds everything is as it should be…nothing amiss.

« on: September 12, 2015, 07:56:45 pm »

The Farmer shakes his head at Quenton... "Thanks, but they are ok. Just some minor scratches, bumps, and bruises. Any idea what the heck is going on? "He holds up the metal portion of a hoe, a small nub of rotten wood sticking out of the end. "I found no sign of insect activity. This is just plain weird!"

*The metal handle to the chest lid pops off in Quenton's hand.

« on: September 12, 2015, 02:06:44 pm »

The sill just fell off one of the windows. It drops to the ground in a puff of dust. A farmer from a nearby homestead pokes his head into the doorway and starts to ask something... but when he sees the state of the wood in the area says "Yep... you too. My barn just fell down on some of my hogs! What the heck is going on!?"

//This is going to go to calendar soon and will be about a three hour quest.

//Moved quest date to Sunday 11am-2pmPST. Hopefully you guys can make it, as it has to go this weekend regardless. This is going to be a good RP one with a chance for some long term impacts on participating characters. If it goes wrong it can get pretty ugly too. ;-)

« on: September 12, 2015, 12:26:19 am »

A couple of "maidens" (Term applied very loosly) keep shooting glances at you...evidently they are crafting their gowns too, and the envy in their eyes is thick as thieves in the night. You even catch one trying to incorporate one of your ideas into her creation. A little later you see a dwarf, full beard and all, step out of a dressing room closet wearing a flowery looking skirt. When the snickering starts he yells "Its a kilt I tell ya... a kilt! You buggers ever seena  kilt before?!?"

« on: September 12, 2015, 12:19:52 am »

//I had to adjust the time for this quest. Instead of 12:oopm PST the start time has been pushed up to 18:00 (6:00PM.) PST. An unavoidable RL issue came up. Apologies… I'll make it up to those who show up with some extra reward for the inconvenience.

Ask A Gamemaster / //I actually placed them to

//I actually placed them to create some interest and RP... which evidently has succeeded. :-) I'm thinking of using them as the basis for an impromptu, which is still sort of developing... but in the meantime, feed them and scratch their tummies.. ;-)

Rumour Has It / Demisa Shimrastri smiles at
« on: September 11, 2015, 12:55:32 am »

Demisa Shimrastri smiles at you politely and hands your letter to one of her assistants to hold onto for later reading... after she has finished making her rounds with the other more prominent mages and arch mages attending the meeting. “Thank you child” is all you receive from her before she melts into the crowd…

*Several days later a Lucindite courier delivers a letter to you sealed with Demisa’s personal wax signet.

Your description of events does indeed seem to indicate the presence of a Wild Magic disturbance. These beautiful anomalies are unpredictable. They come and go of their own accord… almost as if they were sentient creatures with a will of their own. Sometimes they can stay for years, sometimes merely seconds. Their occasional presence reminds us of the all-pervading presence of the Al’Noth… and by extension our duty to protect and nurture it. We eat of it, we breathe of it...we should cultivate and defend it at every opportunity.

As you well know, The Al'Noth is not a constant phenomenon. Its strength varies, and a region that was once particularly strong could grow weak over time. It flows. Some think this is a manifestation of normal cycles and currents… there are many opinions and arguments. Do not look upon this as an opportunity to merely dismiss this energy. Look upon it as an opportunity to learn and grow. View it as a chance to return the Wild Magic disturbance to the natural ebb and flow, so that it may have an opportunity to reappear somewhere else and thereby enrich the land.

It is usually best if someone well-versed in their recognition and nomenclature return them to the embrace of the Al’Noth. There are some who have had much experience in working with them, but I will outline the basic techniques. Be aware it does carry significant risk to the person attempting the closing. (She goes on to explain a complicated formula and process)

I wish you luck. If you should discover that this is not a natural event and that mortal hands were behind its appearance,  or significant damage or harm has been caused, we at The Reaching would be greatly interested in hearing about it.

May the Lady of Spells smile upon you,

Demisa Shimrastri

//There is a mechanical process for attempting to dismiss them. You click on the anomaly in game and follow the directions in the menu that pops up. They are very difficult to get rid of though and there can be negative consequences. The more arcane practitioners and more mechanical arcane class levels available, the easier it is. We can meet in game to attempt a group dispelling if you put one together… but there can still be negative consequences if you fail.

Rumour Has It / One of Center's residents
« on: September 10, 2015, 09:13:31 pm »

One of Center's residents overhears you and nods sagely as the smell of alcohol wafts over you and he states the following, almost as if it were some deep philosophical secret handed down through the ages from student to teacher...

Errr (Burp) Yeah... Dem cats be everywhere! Prolly a lot of mices been running 'bout. (Hiccup).... and he wanders away in the direction of the Bullseye.

« on: September 09, 2015, 10:58:00 pm »

You hear a rumor from an old mage who swears that when he was travelling through Krashin recently... or was it Fort Vehl? or Mariner's hold? (He's old and not very sharp with the memory anymore) he tried to cast a simple light spell and the energy turned into a small fireball that blew him off his horse and caught his beard on fire. You wouldn't have put much stock into what he was saying except for.... well, he had only half a beard, and a light spell is pretty hard to mess up.

As you were leaving the craft hall you also saw a horse that was bald on one side only... strange days these are.

Trade and Market Hall / I'll meet you at the Harpy in

I'll meet you at the Harpy in Fort Vehl at "such and such date and time."

//PM me when you think you are going to be available for this. :-)

Rumour Has It / Once again Vehl does not
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:56:35 pm »

Once again Vehl does not disappoint you in its disgusting lack of law and order. A bribe had to be paid to the clerk in order for his memory on where the records were located to sharpen enough to cease wasting your time. (//Please deposit 100 true in a trash receptacle at your convenience)

Scrolls, logbooks, loose papers… your mind becomes numb with all of the reading, thinking, crosschecking, etc. Hours pass. There are approximate 42 names spanning a three month period. Dillon and his cohorts have been very busy it seems. You notice that most of the names show up in blocks of individuals  timeframe-wise. This seems to indicate whole groups fell victim, similar to what was attempted with your party. Copies of the court orders for servitude are also found… one name in common on all. They are all signed by Judge Inseler Dragbottom. The odds are against something like this happening… very much against it. You know this is not enough evidence to proceed against a “hanging judge” like Inseler though. That would be suicide. You also notice that all of the indentured servants have Fort Vehl home addresses… another improbability from a statistical standpoint.
