Quests Ideas and Discussion / Re: The Artist

*Tugs listens, taking occasional drinks from from something vaguely greyish and smelling strangely of stone.  After Andrew finishes his speaking, he adds more*

First off, I should add the parts that I know about, but not the others.

The fence we ran into on the road, I thought we should make sure he wasn't lying to us.  I followed him back to Miritrix, and into the inn.  He wasn't moving like someone with something to hide, he just walked in, got something to eat and drink, and made some small talk with one of the barmaids.  It looked like he wanted it to lead to something, but it didn't.  I did hear him discussing plans to move on from there, on to Nith, so I thought he looked like an honest fence *snickers*.

I hightailed it back to the coroner's house, and managed to find it just as Ellis was walking up to knock on the door.  Thinking it best to hide some of our hand, I found a shadow and slipped into it.  The coroner (Nelville, I think his name was), took the majority of the group into the tower.  He locked the door  to his house, but it wasn't a very complex lock.

Gala and I looked around his house.  Tossed isn't really the right word for it, Andrew.  Gala found a bunch of his notes and read through them.  She said he didn't have any professional information about being a coroner, but there was a bunch of notes about summoning and controlling mephits.  There were a bunch of pictures on the wall, nice ones, of various things, including a couple we'd seen before, ones by the artist lady.

I went upstairs.  The rooms looked like just sleeping rooms, nothing else.  No pictures up there either.  I heard something in one of the rooms, though, that turned out to be mephits.  Gala had turned herself invisible, and I was sticking to the shadows and they didn't notice me.  We got downstairs and shut the door on the stairs.  Apparently, they don't know how to open doors.

I did go back to check on the house again, while everyone else was looking at the portals.  I didn't see anything else of interest, and it looked like the mephits were still upstairs.  Oh, there was some gold jewelry in the house, but it didn't look like anything interesting.  I did notice that the pictures look like they're from several artists, so I don't think the lady artist had anything to do with it really.  I guess he was collecting fine art and wanted to make some of his own.  All the pictures in the house were definitely high quality.

*he takes a deep drink, and waits for the conversation to continue*

Frost?  What's that? Is that that wet stuff that sometimes gets on stuff in the early mornings?  We call that dew.

Cold here in San Diego is when it gets down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  Brrrr!  Now that's cold!

Now we just have to wait for the Hawaiians to wake up and talk about cold there...

Finding the cure

Members of the group:
Commander Jennara (seems to be leading the group)
Lady Acacea (I think she's still willing to help)
Caerwyn
Kyle (seems to have been working on this for a while)
Ferrit (also seems to have been working)
Daniel (seems knowledgeable)
Drexia
Rissa
[strike]Conquest[/strike] Tyra
Bella (student of Conquest's?)
Ellis

Others I've forgotten.  I'm sure I'll see them again.

Our current goal seems complicated.  We need a scale from a sea dragon, so we're trying to get some help from the merfolk.  To get their good will, we're going to return a item stolen from the before the cataclysm.  To find it, we're going to ask the merfolk for help.  If they know where it is, why don't they get it themselves, or get someone to get it for them?  Seems like we're going in circles.  I'll guess I'll trust Commander Jennara in this.

Conquest's part of our group.  Seems like there are several in the group who don't trust her, and she's not doing anything to help earn trust.  Maybe she doesn't want to be trusted.  I wonder if it'll be her or someone else that betrays us.  Who we get betrayed to will be another matter.  Fisterion would like us to find a cure so he could take it, I think.  The Deepening Dark and the Cult of the Green Dragon would like to stop us.  Who knows who else is out there...

The thing we're looking for right now is the tip to a spear.  The shaft was returned previously.  I think someone mentioned it was done 30 years ago?  The tip is called the Tooth.  The shaft was called the Pearl (because it's made of pearl?).  Acacea mentioned that she thought it was a tooth of ... Narasha?  The sea elves we talked to seemed to think not.

Cure for the dragon poison

I've met with a group working on a cure for the dragon poison.  It seems to be a good cause and a number of trustworthy people (at least, some of them are people I trust).  I think I'll work with them.

I don't know much about the cure, just that's it's a real old recipe, probably from before the cataclysm.  This would make sense, since the poison is probably about that old.  Jhemina hair or blood was mentioned as an ingredient.  What we need right now is a scale from a sea dragon.

A shadow dragon, whatever that is.  Opposes Fisterion's rule over the dragons.  Is gaining followers since Fisterion can't seem to protect them from the Green Dragon Cult.

Works for me... plus it helps me feel better about going on the Innocent Investigations quest later this Saturday.  I was trying to justify to myself the total time I would have spent questing that day...

I'm not sure how they play into this, but they seem important enough to include.

Plenarius told me about them having the phylactery (sp?) of Eon, which would imply they have control of Eon.  They've been around since before Blood's return also.

Could they be in league with the Cult of the Green Dragon?  It seems likely, if only to know what a powerful group is up to.  Kinda like that old saying, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer".  With powerful evil groups, lack of trust seems required.

Probably founded before the return of Blood (and his downfall).

They have found a poison that affects dragons.  It apparently can be used to control them.

Bastion may have been controlled using this.

They also found a way to transform a person into some sort of dragon shapechanger.  They were considering it to make an army.  Their ritual was interrupted, and only one was changed by it.  One other human has undergone this transformation, some scholar.

They were working with the Deepening Dark to aid her in driving dragons to her side away from Fisterion.

Fisterion is the self-proclaimed king of the dragons.  Opposed in his leadership by the Deepening Dark.  Lives on the Molten Isle.

May not be able to protect the dragons from the Cult of the Green Dragon, weakening his position and strengthening the Deepening Dark's.

Other dragons:

Bastion was a green dragon who was the protector of Phal in Belinara.  Was killed by the Deepening Dark.

Something else of note:

Commander Jennara mentioned looking for dragons.  She talked of looking in the Broken Halls and in swamps, checking for signs of a return.  I've looked in the Broken Halls and found something dragonlike, but it wasn't a dragon.  I didn't see any signs of one actually living there.  I'll have to check the swamps, I guess.

Ok, so 25 plus the spell level in your example of 5 would give a DC of 30.  So, the rogue rolls a 1d20 plus his modified UMD to beat the 30?  That seems fairly easy to beat to me; are you sure that's how it works?

That's how it works.  It's not as easy as you think.  Suppose you have a UMD of 20 in your example.  You'd have a 50/50  chance of successfully using a 5th level scroll.  There is no taking 20 in reading scrolls.

Using the scroll will drop you out of stealth, if you're hiding.  I'm pretty sure that if it's an offensive spell, it will drop you out of invisibility, regardless if you successfully read the scroll.

I haven't tested this in a long time, but I once had a ranger/rogue.  Ranger scrolls went from automatic to using UMD when I put 1 point in UMD (which meant the scrolls were useless until I had at least 5 points in UMD, then only 1 in 20 chance).  I'm not sure how wizard/rogue would go, but this would be good to know before you pick up those rogue levels.
