« on: March 16, 2011, 10:11:48 pm »
Version 3.30.3 is online!

As I posted earlier today, this update requires everyone to download an updated HAK file.  Download the new file here, and expand it into your "hak" subfolder

Changes/fixes:
 • Removed Gaseous Form creature from Gloom Woods Castle spawns
 • Rename Outskirts of Fort Gorge to Outskirts of Fort of Last Hope
 • Rename the guard in the Fort of Last Hope appropriately
 • Enable wandering of cat in 150 Krandor
 • Added reflected scabbards as neck models
 • Fix lighting in 224 Haft Lake
 • Re-tie 224 Haft Lake to Dalanthar
 • Tweak house door activation scripts slightly
 • Pawn shops in Port Hempstead, Fort Vehl, Center and Hlint now come with level restrictions. Characters over a given level will not be able to use those pawn shops.
 • Slight placeable tweak in Port Hempstead
 • Closed an exploit involving ranged weapons and weapon enhancements (see here for details)
Thanks this time go to Script Wrecked and orth.

Enjoy!

Layonara Server / Notice of exploit -- PLEASE READ
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:11:13 pm »
It has come to my attention that there is, and has been for some time, an unintended exploit involving bows and weapon enhancements. Specifically, it has been possible to apply weapon damage enhancements to bows, which then applies an additional damage type on top of whatever the arrows may already do, which also stacks with whatever damage enhancements (i.e. elemental rods) may be present on the ammunition.

This exploit came about as a side effect of being able to cast Darkfire/Flame Weapon on bows and other ranged weapons as part of our rather sweeping improvements to ranged weapons overall. It was not our intent to have permanent enhancement for ranged weapons and it takes the general balance of them beyond our design.

As such, the 3.30.3 update closes this exploit.  Players will no longer be able to add permanent elemental, silver or titanium enhancements to ranged weapons.  Darkfire and Flame Weapon will still continue to function.  For those bows already out there with permanent enhancements applied, I'm requiring a mandatory "recall" of such enhanced weapons.  This applies to everyone. No exceptions.

In order that training, customization and other enhancements (i.e. Mighty) are not lost, I am also making a tool available to GMs which will remove damage enhancements from objects.  GMs will also compensate characters with an appropriate elemental enhancement rod, so that nothing is lost.  If you are willing or able to "ox" your ranged weapons, please do so.  Otherwise, please contact a GM to have your weapon modified.

This is mandatory. I regret that this is necessary, but it should never have been in the first place. I realize this will be disappointing for some, but again, it never should have been.

I also want to specifically state that I am not targeting anyone, nor do I "blame" anyone who may have made or received such an enhanced bow or other ranged weapon.  This is not a punitive measure but a corrective one.

Please note that if anyone is found to be using an enhanced ranged weapon after April 15, 2011, the player will receive a temporary ban for exploiting.  If use of such weapons continues, subsequent bans may be made permanent.

If anyone has any questions about this, please ask below or via PM.  I hope everyone, whether affected or not, understands the reasons behind this and cooperates in good spirits.

In closing, I want to thank the conscientious player who make me aware of this, as well as thanks to orth for assisting in jogging our collective memories and working out the reason this was even possible.

Hello again folks,

We are reworking our server structure over the rest of the week to prepare for the coming excitement of the plot quests and to cut some costs.  One of our development repository and team collaboration servers (silkwood) is being transitioned to run on the same server as our forums and lore server (garent).  We don't expect this to cause any change in the performance you see from these sites but it will mean some occasional downtime for the forums and lore as we add some additional web server capabilities.

Once this transition is complete and silkwood goes offline we will be using the cost savings to temporarily support a second server for NWN to run quests when needed. Hat tip to Dorganath for offering to pay for the difference to support the windows server for this and for the idea in general.  To support this capability there will need to be a time for us to temporarily take down the nwn servers to properly mirror the database and the character files over both servers. We'll try to perform this late at night/early morning when things are quiet. Exact date and time is not known but I will follow up in this thread when we decide upon those details. We estimate it will occur some time in the next week.

Feel free to ask any questions should you have them.

Ask A Gamemaster / Tournament for a house?
« on: February 13, 2011, 10:42:47 am »
After the realization that I really haven't played Bjornigar for many RL years, I am preparing to delete the old codger in order to make room for some new blood.  What to do with his house has been a touchy subject for me.  While Willy does live there, my roommate never actually plays Willy, and Willy never paid Bjorn any rent, so why should he get a house for free?  To me it would be muling to hand a house over to the guy on the couch, and especially wasteful if that guy on the couch is never actually played anymore, in essence just another one of those "Zombie houses" out there that gather dust and bear the name of some guy nobody's ever heard of or seen logged in for the past 3-4 years.

I then considered simply vacating the house upon my deletion and putting it up for sale on the open market.  But then somebody with a whole lot of gold who really didn't need a house would buy it up, decorate it and never use it.  Somebody who already has multiple houses gathering dust.  Somebody whose only claim to it was that he had lots of cash on hand and was lucky (or well informed) enough to know exactly when and where it was going up for sale and buy it right there and then.  Or I could auction it up and the guy with 15,000,000 gp in his account and 5 houses to his name would wind up winning it.  I find just about every open-market option equally detestable.

SO it dawned on me to MAKE the new owner earn the house, and hold a player event tournament in the arena!  The most under-utilized, awesome thing we have on the server.  But single competition would be much the same result as the above options, the guy with 40 levels and 90,000,000gp in gear would win, and add to his 5 houses.  So I'm thinking... mixed team competitions.

What I propose is a tournament for Bjorns house in which teams of 3 must sign up.  These teams of 3 could be any class combination, except that they must be limited to levels 5-20.  Anybody less than level 5 shouldn't get a free house, anybody over level 20 should have enough money/resources/connections/oldfriendsoraltcharacterswhoneverplayanymorethatlettheirzombiehousesgatherdust to go buy their own.  Or at the very least characters over 20th level should have enough gold already to rent one of the many vacant rooms in the Open Arms Inn right across the street.

What would be the feasibility of running this?  First of all, would a prize as valuable as a house be allowed to be won in such a matter?  Since it was my own house, I immediately disqualify ANY of my own characters from the competition.  Also I would like to disqualify anybody who already owns one as well from being able to win it.  I want to see active players who would actually use it have an opportunity to earn it on as open a court as possible.  And most importantly, I want to see some spectacular arena competition with team tactics.

This is why I want teams of 3, levels 5-20.  This is so that mages don't have unfair advantage nor do fighters; there are enough combinations for infinite ways to win.  We could set the tournament months in advance, so people could actively recruit and train their teams in preparation, scope out about the competition, try to figure out their tactics in advance, etc.  Hopefully this would also give a goal for more people to actively hunt on the server, training in a most rocky balboa fashion.  Also to breathe life into forgotten characters of those of us who play epics.  "Level 21+ is disqualified you say? well let's see, there's this guy I made long ago..."

When the top team is victorious, they will be given 5 minutes in game to decide which character will bear the title of the house.  This can be done through negotiation of subletting, or combat AT ANY TIME during these 5 minutes.  This is to ensure added drama to the event, where you must pick your team from those you trust, or agree in advance to go last man standing route.  If at any time during the 5 minutes a vote is unanimous that one shall hold the title, then he does and is declared Number 1 Contender.  If they fight, then the last man standing is the Number One Contender.

The Number One Contender then must face the winner of the Losers Battle Royale!  This will be when we fill the ring with all the entrants to all previous bouts in the tournament, and let them go at it at the count of 3 for the last man standing.  Should all die at once due to massive area effect, then whoever is luckiest to be the last one fallen in the server battle-text will have one.  This person who shall wins the Losers Battle Royale then faces the Number One Contender.  So then the final match would be, one-on-one.

What are your thoughts on this format?

Layonara Server / Dragon Storm Campaign Finale! -- EVERYONE PLEASE READ
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:05:45 am »
Dear Layonara Community,

As you have likely noticed, events pertaining to the Dragon Storm  Campaign plot have been picking up as late and seeming to point toward a  significant conflict at some point in the near future.  This would, in  fact, be a correct assessment. In order to help you and us prepare for  this, we'd like to advise you of the following planned timeline of  events.

The plot finale will occur approximately two months from today on or  around the weekend of March 19th, 2011.  This is subject to change  depending on scheduling and other considerations, but that is currently  our target.  The finale may actually be multiple events, structured to  let characters of varying level ranges and interests to have meaningful  participation. We haven't worked this out with 100% certainty yet, but  this is at least the plan. We'll try to have something firm within a  month prior to the event so you can plan accordingly as well.

Between now and the finale, you, the community, may use this time to  prepare and plan. If there is something you want to try to do or  investigate, let us know as soon as possible so that we can plan for  them and assist you in your efforts.  What you do now will shape the  landscape for the finale.  Whether that ends up being a good thing or a  bad thing is up to you.

As a word of advice, we strongly suggest you talk amongst yourselves,  hold meetings, review every bit of information about the campaign so  far, no matter how old it may be. I know that recent events have made  personal security something of a concern for PCs and their  friends/families, but if you all need a safe place to meet, there is a  room designed just for this in Bydell Castle now (added as of version  3.30). It is adjacent to, but not part of, the Aragenite library/temple  there, but it has a separate door and is not consecrated ground, so  clergy and paladins need not worry about violating their oaths. Use this  time wisely. Ask questions, send letters and make plans.

For disclosure and transparency, we have already determined the conditions  for success and failure to varying degrees.  There are multiple  conditions for each and a spectrum of success and failure, so there is  no "One Right Way" to pass the campaign. We are not "railroading"  anything, but rather we have come to an agreement upon what sorts of  things constitute an "ideal" success, partial success and so on. The  better prepared you are to face the challenges ahead, the better things  will hopefully go.  Also, in this case, preparedness is not just a  matter of having plenty of weapons, scrolls and potions (though they'll  surely help) but also of having some important pieces of information at  your disposal.

I would also like to give this one piece of advice:
All keys needed to unlock the best possible outcome of this Campaign are  out there. For the best possible outcome, you'll need more than muscle.  Play smart.

On that note, good luck!

Lastly, I know there's been rumors floating around that the end of this  campaign means the end of NWN Layo.  I want to set anyone's mind at ease  who may be thinking this and state that this is not the plan.  For the  foreseeable future, NWN Layo will continue under the same conditions it  has for the last couple of years. This of course may change as time goes  on, but it will not be due to the campaign wrapping up.

If there are any questions about this post, please ask below or via PM.

General Discussion / Flynn's End of the World Rant
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:04:37 pm »
*Flynn saunters into the Bulls Eye and pulls up a stool*

"Carrick, make it a tall one. And don't spare the kick"

*After being served, Flynn takes a long pull off the beverage then sighs*

"Carrick, let me tell you. This Green Dragon Cult could be the end of us all. I've never seen anything like them in all my years. Even our friend General Bloodstone could not amass the numbers and strength I have witnessed from this Cult. I fear there is no turning back, and there is only one way forward. I'm not even sure if we all threw up our hands and surrendered that we would be spared. Of course, slavery is no option for a man like me. I've lived too long as a free man. I would rather die. It will be war, and it will not end well I fear."

*Flynn leans back and takes another long pull and shakes his head*

"I suppose I could move down to Tilmar and bury myself in some cave down there."

*Flynn chuckles*

"Who am I kidding, I'd rather be a slave then leave the comfort of my Taverns. So be it. Then I will fight until the last of my breath or the Green Dragon Cult is destroyed."

*Flynn finishes his drink and gives Carrick a thankful nod, and leaves as quickly as he arrived*

Rumour Has It / Rofireinites Mobilise
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:15:53 pm »
As Rael braces for the message to be presented to their Lord by the Rofireinites, elsewhere the Rofireinites are moving already.

In Westergate, messengers and mages have been travelling forth and portalling across the world to bring word to Rofireinite Faithful everywhere.

All those in prominant positions of command have been summoned to Westergate including the Heart of the Dragon Jennara for a meeting one week hence.

The call to arms has barely reached many and already members of the Faithful are raising their hands to serve in the Army of the Great Golden Dragon against what they are calling the Chaos of the Cult, it is believed that the Rofireinites view any nation that tries to subvert or turn dragons once again against humanity must be stopped. As we all know last time that happened it resulted in the Cataclysm.

In Hilm Lord Alexander has already gratefully received confirmation of the mobilisation as well as the Lord and Lady Commander of the Toranite army and the Superior General of the Voraxians.

What happens next only time will tell.

General Discussion / A Fond Farewell
« on: January 08, 2011, 11:39:05 am »
Hi everyone,

I have to say ... it's been a great run! That said, this post is to let the community know that I have just stepped down as a GM. The decision to retire was actually some months in the making, but I stayed on a little longer to make sure my work with Center rolled out smoothly, and to finish off my last commitments to CDQ requests.

Time. If only we all could have enough! But with my university days over and my full time job becoming more full time by the day, I know in my heart that I don't have the time for the responsibilities of GMing anymore, and it is time to step aside.

My deepest thanks to the community. You are what makes GMing here worth the time we give up. So thanks, for your commitment and passion to the world, for your creativity on quests and during every day roleplay, and for all the support you give the GMs as we try our best to weave stories for you, puppeteer a dozen NPCs at once, and keep the monsters on a short enough leash that you can at least try to solve the world's problems in a non-combative fashion. Mine were always a little unruly, and apologies to whoever they took a swipe at accidentally during a quest. I do seem to recall a few strand refunds during my tenure ... ;-)

I can say with honesty, it has been my sincerest pleasure to eavesdrop on all your RP conversations, snoop through your character's backpacks and leave the occasional surprise, bash you on the head with the XP wand from time to time, and torture your characters through development quests!

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Rumour Has It / Toranite Faithful mobilise
« on: January 07, 2011, 02:48:01 am »
Soon word spreads that missives have been dispatched to all corners of Layonara, to every Toranite haven, to every temple and shrine with words from the Auscultare himself.

"My fellow servants of our beloved leader Toran,

The time has come for us to stand forth and be recognised for who we are. To stand with our brothers and sisters in the brewing troubles in the world. I speak of course of the threat that those known as the Green Dragon Cult pose to each and every one of us.

I have given instructions to all leaders of our faith that the time for us to start to prepare has come. In recognition of our service and dedication I have duly appointed two figures whom you will have heard of and who represent the pure ideals that we all aspire to in our worship of Toran.

I speak of course of Toran's Chosen, Lady Daniella Stormhaven and also of the Company of the Star Commander Sir Lance Stargazer. Both who had dedicated their lives to His service and appear as living examples of what Faith looks like.

I hereby give both these able bodied followers the ranks of Lord and Lady Commander of the combined Toranite Army. They have the full backing of the Church leadership in their campaign to rid the world of the evil that the Green Dragon Cult represents.

May Toran grant them wisdom, and us the strength to follow in their footsteps and heed their words in the battles to come.

********************************************************

Across the lands people pack their belongings and start to rally to the call, making their way to Toranite centres of worship to be allocated into army units and divisions, ready to intensify training for the fields of battle to come.

In Mistone a flood of faithful make their way to Fort Last.

On Alindor they gather at the Fort of Kings.

On Dreger they gather outside Northpoint in the Kingdom of Boyer after agreements were made with the Aeridinites there.

On Belinara they move towards Castle Hilm to bolster the already significant force there that is at at present under Sir Lances command.

As they begin to gather more dispatches are sent to the Rofireinites, the Voraxians, and other faiths to join the call to arms.

Rumour Has It / A Quiet word passes by...

An old DragonCalled, by name of Sallaron Tempest, who seemed to hold some reknown as a carpenter, has died of old age in his house in Haft Lake.
He left behind his wife, two sons and a small fortune in his will was given to various charities.

During the funeral, friends and neighbours were astounded to see a mass of people attend, many seeming to be Ex-slaves rescued from a terrible life, whilst others appeared to be those of great rank and standing from various organisations.

Neighbours were noted to have been amazed by the massive attendance to the funeral, stating " He seemed like such an ordinary man. "

Version 3.30.1 is online!

In keeping with my recent post about updates, here's a small one.

Changes:
 • Add road travel system to Lake Splendor and Windjammer's Bay
 • Tweak Ilsare's summons to bear her colors in some way
 • Fix Guard Ashley's description to mention the correct city name
 • Fixed some broken/buggy giant spawns in the Great Forest
 • Renamed the Weary Traveler to the Silver Buckle due to change in ownership
 • Undead Shape and Construct Shape have been disabled due to lore conflict.  They will likely be replaced with something else down the road.
 • Some adjustments of some spawns somewhere in the world
That's it!  Nothing major this time.

Layonara Server / Version 3.30 is online!
« on: October 27, 2010, 08:02:36 pm »
Version 3.30 is online!

This version is a pretty significant update in some ways, and it also requires new HAK files.  Please note that I've restructured the “control” HAK file into two files: a “ctrl” HAK and a “res” HAK for size and management reasons. You will need to download both of these files as well as the latest TLK file in order to enter the game.

http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_resv3r1.rar (HAK)
        http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_ctrlv3r10.rar (HAK)
        http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layonara_v24.rar (TLK)

(NOTE: the All-in-One HAK has not yet been updated)

This update contains some initiatives that we've been working on in one sense or the other for several months, and in some cases nearly a year,, and in particular one far reaching initiative that we hope will improve several long-running ills. I'll mention more on this later, but this one in particular is the result of a collaboration between the GM Team as a whole based on feedback and comments from the community.

For expediency, I want to quickly thank the entire GM Team, the Plot Team, the Project Team and the community for their various contributions, and specifically, I want to thank (in no particular order) Script Wrecked, Alatriel, Rowana, Eorendil, Pankoki, Carillon Guardian-452 and mixafix for their more direct contributions and for saving me a load of time.

And now, onto the meat:

 Announcing: Center, Brelin Kingdom, Mistone
Once a town of its own right prior to the Dark Ages, the region of land  once known as Center has seen a resurgence in recent years.  The resettling began with refugees fleeing the destruction and uncertainty brought by the tsunamis that struck the west coast of Mistone. While initially little more than a tent city, Center started to become a crossroads in its own right. Its location along the strategic road between Fort Wayfare and points south helped it to become more than just a transient safe shelter for the displaced. Enterprising merchants set up their tents and wagons, finding the trade and commerce worthwhile.

As has often been the story of other towns, an inn was built to serve not only those who ended up staying for a long term but also those traveling along the road. The merchant presence likewise became a fixture, drawing not only a banking presence but also facilities for skilled tradesmen. Merchants migrated away from Fort Wayfare, though this wasn't long lamented by residents, who on the whole felt some relief at having less traffic (and fewer “undesirables” lingering around their town. In keeping with this sentiment, Fort Wayfare petitioned Spellgard to “do something about that portal” in the middle of town.  Spellgard agreed, and a team led by Connor Garvill shifted the portal's exit to Center.  With the added traffic through every means, Center began to truly thrive and become a hub of activity of all sorts.

While still essentially a transient settlement, as it doesn't qualify as a town yet, Center has grown beyond the simpleness of its rebirth into a place worthy of note.
To address one of the biggest problems with v3, Layonara once more has a single starting area: Center.  Located south of Fort Wayfare and north of Port Hempstead fields, Center and its surrounding areas represent a complete low-level experience for all new characters.  Its status as an unincorporated settlement (at best) makes it open to all races, even those banned from cities and towns throughout the civilized world.  That is not to say that they're welcomed by all, but there is either tolerance or numbness in those who might be considered residents.

Besides the land mass that is Center, the surrounding areas have been remapped somewhat.  Existing areas have been changed and new areas have been added.

And of course, there are benches.

Along with this, there is a new entry area, which should help introduce new players to the Dragon Storm campaign.

As with many things, it is better seen than described, so please, stop by and have a look.  We're eager to hear your feedback.  As well, why not submit a new character and experience it through new eyes.

And since it is such a big thing, it's worthy of special note that Carillon and Pankoki worked quite hard and diligently to bring the Team's vision and plans for Center to life. It is no small feat they accomplished.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------

With all that said, let's get onto the list...

 Center:
The Center project involves 15 new areas created in or around Center, creating a new hub for the server and completely changing the experience of a first level character entering the game world. Some examples of changes relating to the hub that will help the new character:
 • New starting     point; characters no longer appear in Port Hempstead or Fort Vehl
 •     West housing portal destination changed from Fort Wayfare to Center
 •     Smaller “Hlint-like” area with benches, facilitating players     meeting up
 •     Safe rest campsite for hanging out
 •     Temple and healer available in the area
 •     New basic craft hall in the area, with merchants available
 •     Conveniently located barn and ox merchant
 •     Low level quests located in the city areas
 •     Message board in craft hall, directing new players to other low     level quests
 •     Low level CNR and spawns placed in areas around Center, allowing new     characters to adventure more easily and safely
 •     Convenient and central bindstone, so older players hanging out can     keep an eye out for newer players and help them reach their graves
 •     New inn with full crafting kitchen, meeting room, and large stage     for player functions and quests
 •     New CNR locations, fishing spots, spawns and creatures in new areas     surrounding Center
 •     10 new scripted quests added. (Most are low level and integrated     into Center, but a few are suitable for more experienced characters)
 •     New Prunillan temple added to West server, in Center
 •     Some merchants and quest NPCs moved from other urban areas to     Center, to facilitate player gathering and usefulness of area
 •     Barn moved to Center from Port Hempstead Fields

 Other New stuff:
 • New low-level     undead area tucked away south of Center (go looking for it)
 • New module     entry area on West, replacing The Eye of the Storm area with     something that introduces the plot better. (Note: Characters do not     walk this path in an IC sense. It is more to introduce the player to     the plot and the world's setting.  The information is IC, but the     path is not.)
 • New CNR and     adventuring areas added off of Lake Splendor (you have to look for     them though)
 • Krandor     Hospital guild hall has been added to Krandor (1)
 • Dwarven Army     guild has been added to Bloody Gate (1)
 • The Coalition     guild hall has been added to the Dapplegreen Tower (1)
 • Meeting Room     added to Bydell Castle as a place to learn about and discuss the     Dragon Storm Plot (2)
 • “Magic     Mouth” system added.  There are two instances in the Bydell Castle     Meeting Room, and others elsewhere (with more planned).  You'll know     it when you see it.
 • WLDQ Reward     for Daniella Stormhaven (3)
 • WLDQ Reward     for Jaelle Thornwood (3,4)
 • WLDQ Reward     for Lance Stargazer (3,4)
 • WLDQ Reward     for Alandric Vensk (3)
 • New poison     type available for crafting: Hallow Wraith Spider poison (causes     chance of spell failure) (5)
 • Knight PrC     now available (formerly Purple Dragon Knight) (5)
 • System to add     a subrace bias to merchants. This is an initial implementation and     may well change over time. Right now, it's only in effect in     Trelania, and if your character is one of those against whom the     merchants are biased, you'll know what I mean. (Note: This was     requested and done due to semi-recent in-game events and player     actions, so you only have yourselves to blame...and if you think I'm     talking about you, you're probably right. *winks*)
 • Added area     between Lor and Castle Mask to illustrate the distance between them     and the benevolent presence of Raelian forces.
Changed stuff:
 • A few changes made to the Red     Light caverns due to CDQ outcome
 • Rearrangement of some low-end CNR     resourced due to Center and Red Lights
 • Re-tie and remodel of 250 Prantz     to Hurm
 • Re-tie of 260 Prantz to Nith
 • Add mastiff to 117 Fort Llast
 • Remodel of Leringard Arms (121     Leringard)
 • Remodel of 125 Leringard
 • Adjusted/Rebalanced Ice Marches     areas, in part due to quest outcomes
 • Mistone Alliance Scout PrC changed     to Agent of the Realm PrC (5,6)
 • Show a few signs of life in the     Hallowlight Forest
 • Add Master Weapon Crafter's Anvil     in Mariner's Hold advanced crafting hall
 • Add Lesser Jewelers Benches to     Creedo and Fort Vehl craft halls
 • Adjust location of trash barrel in     Port Hempstead Hall of Reconstruction

 • Any     current characters with Mistone Alliance Scout levels should contact     the GM team about the options for a partial rebuild.
 • Representations     of the state of Kuhl Kingdom disrupt the route typically taken to     Hilm Castle and The Great Forest (and points beyond).  Taking the     “usual” route will become significantly more dangerous. As well,     there are multiple warnings to this effect in-game, both IC and OOC.      Understand that characters caught adventuring in these areas are     subject to the full consequence that the GM Team can bring to bear,     as would be fitting for the current state of the Kuhl kingdom.  In     addition, the spawns in the Kuhl areas may be overwhelming and     completely unfair.  This is by design, and no Soul Strand losses     will be reimbursed due to the “unbalanced spawn” clause for any     losses in these areas. However, since the GM Team does not wish to     hinder the fun of players by restricting travel to points that could     previously only be reached through the Kuhl kingdom (in a mechanical     sense), an alternate route has been provided.
So there it is!  As I said above, we're looking forward to everyone's feedback on Center.  It represents many hours of work and collaboration, but it may not yet be as good as it can be.  Let us hear your thoughts if there is anything that you feel is needed, missing or should be changed.

 Go forth and enjoy!

Layonara Server / Significant update coming soon!
« on: October 17, 2010, 10:24:28 pm »
Hey all,

I'm sure you've seen by now at least one mention of me saying "in the next update" and "almost done" and the like.

Well...it's really almost here.  The last few details are being sorted out, and while I'm hesitant to give a specific day (yet), you can count on seeing it in the very near future.

In preparation of this, you'll need to download some files:
        http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_resv3r1.rar (HAK)
        http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_ctrlv3r10.rar (HAK)
        http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layonara_v24.rar (TLK)

You can download these files now and place them in their appropriate locations.  They will not impact your ability to play before the update.

Regarding the HAKs, the first one listed, the "res" HAK, is new.  The old "control" HAK was getting kind of large, so I split off all the large graphical resources that had been stuck into the "control" HAK up to this point, so that future HAK updates in the "control" (now "ctrl") will be smaller and easier to manage on my end and yours.

That's it!  Happy downloading!

Rumour Has It / Word trickles out...
« on: October 13, 2010, 05:02:15 pm »
... to the mercenary and glory-seeking elements of Mistonian society: The infamous Steel and the ever-silent Viper have arrived in Fort Vehl with their eyes on those sell-swords who prove themselves to be the most clever and the most determined. They're recruiting for the elite "Triple S" strike force, and any who wish to meet Triple S members in person, this is your chance.

///// Alatriel and myself will be IG around 9pm EDT (1am GMT the next day) this evening. This is an RP event that will challenge your character and potentially force him/her to make decisions about his/her own person/beliefs. All are welcome, even those that simply wish to watch. Level doesn't matter. See you there. //////

General Discussion / Announcing NWN log stripper alpha
« on: September 23, 2010, 04:26:11 pm »
Hey everyone,

Per request of Cinnabar way back a few months ago I created a small tool for stripping log files of combat and only displaying what selected people were saying. The project is now(Actually it has been for some time) at a stage, where I can allow people to test it out and give feedback on how it works for them.

There are still features to be added and things to fix but it should at least in it's basic form give people a useful tool for processing huge logs with lots of combat.

I am aware that one such program already exists(Search for nwStory: Tools for the Story Writer), but I am mostly developing this as a little hobby project while learning some techniques and such for software development. Therefore I hope that at least a couple of people would like to try it out and tell me what they think.

At the moment the project page is really bare, but go to the project page and give it a try if you ever need to get a quick overview of a special log. Just remember that it is still an alpha stage project and there may still be bugs and other quirks. Right now the windows application is available, download the packing.tar.gz file and unpack it, the executable is in the packing/bin directory.

The way the program works should be rather easy to figure out, but I will try to make an update tomorrow with instructions and such.

General Discussion / Ideas
« on: September 01, 2010, 09:14:42 am »
Was just reading akata's post and Dorg's responses ... to be truthful, got me a little disheartened. One of Layo's longest serving players (and world leaders) obviously not happy about some things ... anyways, you can read that thread.

I really want to write a long, well-written post with lots of good ideas and an accurate, sensible summary of some of the thoughts that are in my head ... that said, I don't know where you guys get the time!

I was going to jump on tonight and had a peek at the server status .. again, only 2-3 characters on across both servers. I ended up watching TV and playing Bejewelled on Facebook. Unfortunately, that is becoming the preferred option more and more often - and it seems like not only for me?

Why?

I have my thoughts on the matter ... forgive me they aren't couched in loquacious (*nods to darkstorme*) paragraphs. Hopefully the gist is clear.

1. More scheduled quests please! I know GMs are doing it on a volunteer basis, I get it, I do. I did it for a couple of years and know sometimes you really can't be bothered or RL is busy or you'd rather jump on as a player ... but 2-3 a month is achievable, no? How can you incentivize the running of more quests for GMs? Give them XP for their chosen character for their time spent running quests? I certainly wouldn't begrudge a GM earning the same XP for one of their characters at the same rate my character does attending the quest they spend their time running. I don't know ... maybe others have got some ideas to encourage GMs to run quests?

2. Please change existing areas every now and again. Just a tweak, that's all I need. Does it take that long to shift a spawn two inches over? Add another goblin archer around the corner there, some warhounds with the hobgoblins there, a trap in the minotaur caves, a vampire in with the mummies, a treasure chest here, a carrion crawler there, whatever ... I contemplated making (another) new character the other day and had the thought if I have to run them through the same 100 areas that I have done literally hundreds of times previously with other characters I will seriously do myself in. I'd do it myself, honestly I would but ... *hugs his Mac*

3. Less rules, more fun! I have played here for over 4 years and I don't know the rules anymore. If people wanna make a goblin to join in on Lonn's gobbie night, go ahead! The will system and inter-character transfer of assets and house remodels and restricted classes and 4 CDQs to move from A to B and 2 CDQs to change from Y to Z ... I dunno, maybe it's just me but i'd rather play with 20 people, half of whom play as NG when their approved alignment is LG than play with one person who plays their alignment by the letter of the law. If someone is ridiculous with relaxed rules, kick em out ... but do the excesses and abuses of the past have to erect these impossible barriers for entry for new players?

4. More positions for characters! Ongoing responsibilities! Ability to change the world! I know this has been gone over numerous times elsewhere ... don't think there is an easy answer and I understand the lore books are to be released at some point and lore needed to be crystallized at some point and for various dramas lore has had to be re-written but it is a little demoralizing. I think Acacea has written about it elsewhere, all the challenges of the world are these new things that for whatever reason weren't a danger to everyone last week? WLDQs especially. I don't want to go into the ins and outs of all the WLDQs of the last few years but prior to Blood's fall the WLDQs run seemed to affect existing plots and people ... now it seems as if each WLDQ tackles a newly introduced foe so as to not affect existing lore? Fenrir's mithril-eating Balamti? Never heard of them prior to his WL. Daniella's unhappy God. Was it a concept that was created for her WLDQ? Alandric's child of chaos? Never read about him in lore. If other WLs agree, maybe this topic is better taken into the WL forum for dissection?

5. Re-attachment of DTs. Again, it's been spoken about to death elsewhere ... but again I keep coming back to how many of those players/characters now gone due to their character perming would have remained versus those people who remained because of the existing DT system? I'd put money down that the former is more numerous than the latter. Ark is on 9 tokens, if/when he loses No 10, there (most probably) goes yet another player.

Please read this as written from the perspective of a player who wants to get excited about Layo again. Do they read as criticisms? I don't mean them to be. Read them as from a player who wants to look at the server status of a night and jump on and go for a run with a dozen others on west or a different dozen on central.

Dorg, I don't need a response from you individually addressing these points, it's cool.

Ask A Gamemaster / Character Changes
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:24:05 pm »
Let's say you hastily made a character (who does that?) or want a simple change to reflect aging, personal choice, or flair...  I am offering the following things...

If you have any of the following changes you'd like to make to your character:

Head
Skin Color
Hair Color
Portrait
Tattoo Colors

I will be in game today at 1pm PST/4pm EST and will do this fairly regularly.  I ask that you look at the following color tables and see which #'s you'd like for each attribute to make it quicker.

NWN Colour Palettes - Edon Revisted

Alatriel: We could dress Kyle up. You humans all look alike anyway.

Alazira: I like it. *looks at Kyle*

Layl: Fine, dress Kyle up. *looks at Kyle*

Alatriel: *looks at Kyle*

Kyle: No. No way. Not going to happen...

Layl: *looks at Kyle, blinking*

Kyle: *blushes*

Ferrit: Shh! Just put on the clothes or I'll make you play Essa.

Kyle: Yes dear.

Narrator: The scene opens in the new shop. Ben is tidying the counter top.

Kyle: *in Ben's too-tight pants and shirt* Well, here we are, in the new shop, ready for business. *polishes the counter with a crooked grin, glancing at the front door from time to time*

Kyle: Yup. The place looks great. Anytime now. *continues to polish*

Narrator: Time passes...

Kyle: Blast. We need a hook. HEDESSA!

Ben: *sashays out, swaying his hips* Yes, Benji? *twirls a lock of his hair*

Kyle: Can you go out and drum up someone business? You know, use your *finger quotes* people skills? *goes back to polishing the countertop and fussing with the inventory chests*

Ben: *bats his eyes and in a husky voice* Of course, handsome. *sashays outside the shop, then swiftly tacks up a sign that says "FREE BEER INSIDE".* All done!

Kyle: Um...*watches "Essa" sway past with some concern*

Hedessa: *takes a look at the sign* Oh, free beer! *walks inside*

Kyle: *gruffly* Hey, lady. Welcome to the Angels Guild Adventurer Outfitters, how can I help you?

Hedessa: Dwarven Stout, please. In a frosted glass. A BIG frosted glass!

Kyle: This is the Angels Guild, not a bar.

Hedessa: But the sign said --

Kyle: What sign? This isn't a bar!

Hedessa: *patiently* The one outside, with FREE BEER in big block letters?

Kyle: ESSA!

Ben: *high pitched giggle from the back room*

Hedessa: So, no beer?

Kyle: *sighs* No ma'am.

Hedessa: And you do what, here, again?

Kyle: We are the Angels Guild Adventurer Outfitters -- we outfit all your advent...

Hedessa: *waves an impatient hand* Yes, Yes. I could use a new dress then.

Kyle: That we can help you with. FERRIT!

Alatrial: *sneaks up behind Ben, appearing suddenly* Yes?

Kyle: AGH! Don't DO that!

Alatrial: *smiles*

Kyle: The lady wants a new dress.

Alatrial: Of course. This way. *they exit to back room*

Kyle: *moves to take down the beer sign*

Daniel: *walks in* Ah, my good man! A mug of beer and quickly, I'm parched!

Kyle: We're not a bar. This is the Adventure Outfitters --

Daniel: But the sign --

Kyle: *grits his teeth through his crooked grin* We are a crafting guild. Ignore the sign. Please.

Daniel: Ah. Pity.

Kyle: Is there something else I can help you with?

Daniel: A glass of Black Hills Chablis, perhaps?

Kyle: *forces his crooked grin* We're not a bar...

Daniel: Well...do you make guitars?

Kyle: *turns abruptly and bellows* LAYL!

Amgine: *bounces out with a wink* Yes, Ben?

Kyle: The man wants an instrument.

Amgine: Oh, fun! Come on sugar, let's get you strung up...

Daniel: I like the sound of that! *winks at the audience and goes into the back room with Amgine*

Kyle: *moves to take down the sign again*

Alazira: *strides in* A dwarven stout, and make it snappy!

Kyle: *smacks his forehead* We are not a bar. This is the Angels Guild, Adventure -

Alazira: Tower Malt?

Kyle: Not. A. Bar.

Alazira: Silver Buckle Gin, then! *bright smile*

Kyle: We are NOT A BAR. I don't serve alcohol here! No beer! *getting upset*

Alazira: No beer?

Kyle: No beer.

Alazira: I'll just have some Xeenite wine then.

Kyle: BLAST IT! *begins to babble to himself*

Alazira: And a raise dead scroll.

Kyle: *pivots and bellows* ELLY!

Layl: *moves out with gentle grace* Yes, Ben?

Kyle: The lady wants a raise dead scroll.

Layl: *a sunny smile* That will take a little while...would you care for a glass of wine while you wait?

Alazira: *shoots a smug look at "Ben"* Don't mind if I do! *follows "Elly" into the back room*

Kyle: *moves to take down the sign yet again*

Elohanna: *barges in, all hustle* Hey, hello, wow, it's hot out there.

Kyle: Yes it is. *moves toward door*

Elohanna: Hey, hey, my beer?

Kyle: No beer. Adventuring gear. We outfit Adventurers. WE. DO. NOT. SERVE. BEER.

Elohanna: Ohh. How about a wand then? I can stir my beer with it!

Kyle: *bellows* ESSA!

Ben: *sways out* Yes, Benji?

Kyle: *glares at her* A rod for the lady.

Ben: Isn't that your job, sugar? *giggles and takes Elly into the back room*

Kyle: *dives for the door, and trips over Tod*

Tod: Ah, excuse me, I'd like a --

Kyle: WE HAVE NO FREE BEER! NO STOUT, NO ALE, NO BEER! Nothing but adventuring gear! No liquor! No wine! No booze of any kind! WE'RE THE ANGELS GUILD! NOT A BAR! *panting, face red*

Tod: Um. I wanted some armor?

Kyle: *standing, embarassed* Oh, well, then. JAKO!

Ferrit: *comes out silent, and waits*

Tod: Here, it's all on this order. *hands over a piece of paper*

Ferrit: *takes the paper and starts to leave*

Tod: Oh, and a short sword! *hands over a piece of paper*

Kyle: JAKO!

Ferrit: *returns and takes the paper, then turns to leave*

Tod: Oh, oh! And I have some platinum that needs smelting to ingots! *hands over a clearly heavy box*

Kyle: JAKO!

Ferrit: *returns and takes the box, turns, then hesitates*

Tod: Let's see...*pats his vest, then shakes his head*

Ferrit: *hesitates one moment more, then starts to leave*

Tod: Oh! *snaps his fingers and pulls another scrap from a vest pocket* And some good healing potions --

Kyle: JAKO!

Ferrit: *turns around again, fists full of paper and box under his arm, and walks, very slowly and deliberately back to Kyle. Reaches out slowly, takes the paper from his hand in a quick snapping motion, returns his hand slowly, tucks the paper with the others, then waits, drumming his fingers*

Tod: That's all! *bright smile*

Ferrit: *waits, fingers drumming*

Tod: Really. That's all.

Ferrit: *eyes him suspiciously for a moment*

Tod: *another bright smile*

Ferrit: *turns to leave*

Tod: Oh, wait -- what's this? *takes out a piece of paper*

Ferrit: *turns ever so slowly*

Tod: Ah, just an old grocery list. Don't suppose you can help a fellow with apples and cheese, can you? *smiles*

Ferrit: *rolls his eyes, turns on one heel and marches out*

Kyle: We'll get it done. Oh -- would you take down that sign by the door on your way out?

Tod: Be happy to! *leaves, grabbing the sign as he goes, then walks back in* Hey -- says here free beer? *takes out a mug and slaps it on the counter*

Kyle: *begins to weep*

*curtain close*

Narrator: Just another day of business at the Angels Guild, Adventure Outfitters...

All of us who are parents have of course found ourselves saying things that we cannot possibly imagine having just come out of our mouths.  Soo..... What was the funny thing you found yourself forced to say to your child today?

Mine?
