Just for Fun / Limits of Suspension of Disbelief
« on: May 29, 2010, 02:06:40 pm »
What breaks your suspension of disbelief?

Remember those apparently simple springy things on Chell's legs in Portal?  Those were knee replacements added by the game designers after playtesters thought the character could never survive the drops and jumps.  So a gun that shoots portals is reasonable, but people falling and flying several dozen feet and being fine is outrageous?

I actually agree with that position.  I find it's easy to accept technology and magic doing outrageous things, but there are limits to what flesh can do.  That may be partially because I think characters should have flaws.  It's also because I know what a human is, and altering the universe to make a human into something it's not breaks my suspension of disbelief.  If you want a human who can survive a three hundred foot jump and keep going as if there were no impact force, make him a cyborg or a robot instead.  Or make it happen in the Matrix, where things aren't real in the first place.  Now he's not just a human; he has been modified by the magic of technology.

I'm not sure where the line is, exactly.  A little exaggeration of real-world ability is good.  That makes things exciting and heroic.  Something that completely disregards the physics of a body isn't going to go over so well, though.  I think that's where my point was leaning [post=1313692]here[/post].  "There's a point where combat power goes from cool to ridiculous," basically.

So, one thing that breaks my suspension of disbelief is over-extension of the abilities and limits of human (and human-like) bodies.  Pretty broad one, huh?  Lot of stuff fits in there.

What suspends your suspension of disbelief?

The Coalition

  Goals:
  • Provide      support to members own goals
  • Work      against political and moral corruption
  • Undermine      evil, unlawful activities either by bringing the Law to bear, or by taking      matters into one’s own hands.
  • Indirectly      support Organizations aiming for Order and the Greater Good without strict      adherence to it.
  • Provide      aid to the underprivileged and downtrodden in order to build resistance      against corrupt governments
Members: (other affiliations)
  • Tyra      Dragonheart (Leader)
  • Bella Poetr
  • Andrew      William Reid
  • Dot      Stroven
  • Acilius      Shadowbane
  • Daniel      Benjamin Poetr
  • Gurnorhn
  • Rottie
Guildhouse: Abandoned Fort, Dapplegreen Forest

History:  It all started as an idea.  Tyra saw the decaying tower in the outskirts of Dapplegreen as a base for... something.  She didn’t know what, yet.  But she knew she wanted it...
She figured out when she got her hands on the deed, and realized first hand the 'nature’ of things in Co’rys.  Faced with the knowledge of the kinds of things she did in pursuit of the tower, she decided to make the tower into a symbol of something better, of a way of life that could replace the way things are in the otherwise corruption-filled kingdom.  She needed help though.  Alone she could not achieve what she felt needed to be done.  And the first thing needing to be done was cleaning the tower of an undead curse.  Calling on an old friend, a well respected Paladin of Toran, Tyra managed to gather a group of adventurous Toranites (and some others) to go about solving the mystery of the Tower.  After a failed assault and some time spent re-evaluating the situation, Tyra’s Ilsarian friend, Andrew, and a musical Paladin uncovered the mystery of the Tower, allowing Tyra to find a necromancer’s orb, which caused any who fell in the tower to rise again as the undead.
Following this, Tyra set out to gather a group whom she could work with in order to try and change things for the better in Co’rys.  She approached many people of various ways of life, each having a role in mind that will help further the goals she hoped could be achieved through cooperation.  Having gathered a number of interested people, Tyra feels ready to set forth with trying to bring some light to the dark corners of Co’rys.

How to Join:  ICly?  Get Tyra's attention somehow, and she will invite you into the circle.  OOCly?  PM me with why you'd like to join and we can work on the how and why Tyra would approach you.  The Guild is informal, so there is no real applying, and it's also covert, so there is no sign saying "Coalition Head Quarters."  We are just a group of players who have decided to work together toward goals we each have, along with the other Goals listed above.

Rumour Has It / Plans within Plans...

Stygian stumbled as he was spat from the bindstone in Arnax. He struggled to keep his feet and nearly wretched with the effort. He wiped a line of spittle from his chin and began laughing softly and muttered "fools." He grabbed a nearby acolyte and instructed him to have someone send a wraith to find Dr. Vensk and give him the following message.

"The deed is done at great cost and effort. Watch for your opportunity. It will come soon."

General Discussion / Ideas to spark interest.
« on: May 01, 2010, 09:08:14 pm »
I know Dorg said some changes are comming in a recent thread. But I thought I would toss out some other ideas to see if we can spark some interest in the ole place. Some of these have been talked about in other threads, but I wanted to put them into this one as well. Some of these ideas are probably not even possible for the NwN version of Layo... but I wish to bring them up all the same.

1. Double XP week(end) (some % of a boost in XP) I missed the last one of these... how was the reception?

2. Increased loot or coin drops (say for a weekend)

3. Put +4 (and maybe +5) items into the loot table. Perhaps they are already.

4. New items to the loot tables. Id like to even see a sort of cycling loot table if that were possible.. say every so many months what was dropping would change. Kinda like how Disney "locks up" movies for so many years then releases them for sale again.

5. Adding a "Call Home" type ability to all. More than likley a consumable item with some cost to it.

6. Attuneable equipment....this would get those crafters back playing and crafting since that Iron Longsword they made 4 years ago isnt being handed down from player to player anymore.

7. Increase the numbers of characters we can play from 6 to.... ?

8. Adding an "LFG" (Looking For Group) feature to the game, to the forums, etc. A place we can check and see who is wanting to play and not just see that empty server or server of people out of our level range etc.

I would like to see others add what they think in the way of other ideas. But take discussion of an individual ideas to its own thread. Lets keep this just for ideas, not so much the discussion of them. My idea is to stay on topic and give the powers that be a clear view of what the player base beleives may help make this world even better!!! :)

Thanks

Tis the night - the night
Of the grave's delight,
And the warlocks are at their play;
Ye think that without
The wild winds shout,
But no, it is they - it is they.

THE FIRST EVER EVIL CHARACTER CONVENTION!
[/B]

[INDENT]Come and see some of the maligned and depraved souls that walk Layonara! Paladins will vomit and shriek in terror at the sight of such a gathering! Little animals will flee as their footsteps shake the very foundations of the earth! As for those that have yet to meet the other charming evil characters, feel free to join us and indulge in our delightful company!

Now that my self-imposed Layonara hiatus has ended, perhaps it's time we organize something. Why should the others have all the fun? Perhaps it's time we tip the scales and bump back! Maybe we should organize something according to our timezones? Your input would be very much appreciated and as such please post your timezones that way we can find some common ground. Perhaps if we can schedule a group assembly, we can make this a weekly event, if time permits.

Those that can tolerate our presence will be allowed to join so long as no conflict arises. Don't worry, we don't bite, well maybe except for that one in the lower left part of the image, to the right of the pretty little girl. Oh, and maybe even the second female Dark Elf at the top row, next to the handsome male. This is open to all levels, races, and alignments, just take note of the repercussions. Do join us! Ask A Gamemaster / Gather Information Roll
« on: March 19, 2010, 04:23:42 pm »
OOC//

I am wanting to direct this to the GM (s) running the current quest/CDQ/current plot regarding Michidli and the paintings. I want to make two "Gather Information Skill Rolls* in-game and would like to allocate up to 10,000 true for each of the two rolls for information. This is being done with the intent of passing on info to Jehoram for his CDQ. If you can PM me, I can PM the two questions back to you to prepare whatever results might come up. :)

Jonathan Selmek aka Daren Valhaikor aka poohbear383340 died this morning in a fatal car crash.

He was a great roleplayer and really knew how to throw you a curve. His characters were well known and quite diverse from each other.

You will be sorely missed.

Layonara Server / Masterjack's Layonara team application
« on: March 08, 2010, 11:36:58 am »
This is being posted as per post # 15 from this thread. http://forums.layonara.com/layonara-server/261122-layonara-team-applications-now-open.html

1. What position are you applying for?

Gamemaster

2. How long have you been a member of Layonara?

Since April 2006

3. Why do you want to be a GM or LORE team member in Layonara?

I love Layo and what everyone has done to it to make it so interesting. My current work position has given me a lot of free time away from my family.  So why not help out my Layo family when I can.

Secondly I find myself wanting to bring more of Layo to life then just my character. I think being a GM is the best way for me to do that.

Thirdly, I miss making adventures. My son and I have been working together to keep a campaign going for his friends for about two years now. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sadly my son went off to college.

4. What characteristics make you well suited to the position of GM/LORE team member?

I'm patient, tolerant and work well with others. I also have an over active imagination.

5. Please read through the GM/LORE team duties and qualifications, if you have not already. In light of these obligations, what other responsibilities (either Layonara-related or real life) could affect your Team performance and how would you balance these?

I work for the Canadian military, that alone is a big responsibility. I can be called away at a moments notice to go any where to do almost anything. My current posting makes that extremely unlikely thought not impossible. Usually I get plenty of notice before I have to go somewhere so I should be able work around it or take a small sabbatical.

The second responsibility would be my family. I'm currently posted away from them till at least summer 2011, so that should not be a problem. Also my children are in college.

6. Are you a member of any other Layonara teams? If so and you are accepted as a GM/LORE team member, how do you plan to balance your new role and your current role?

No

7. Please describe any DM/GM experience, including any NWN GMing experience. Please note that GMing experience is not required for an application to be considered.

I have GM'd / DM'd plenty of games since the early 80s. To be honest most of them pale in comparison to Layo standards. Most of my experience comes from helping my son create an on going campaign for his friends for the last 2 years. I have not DM'd using NWN.

8. Are you applying as a part time or full time quest GM? (Please note the GMing time commitments as specified under GM duties.)

For the first year I can to do it full time but would have to go to part time after that. So I'll just apply for part time and do more then expected.

9. I'll PM my quest summary with in a day or so.

Trade and Market Hall / Order for The Arm of the Ram
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:47:25 pm »
*A small red devil with a long forked tail materializes near the doorway of "The Ram." The hour is close to midnight and no one is about. It slips a small folded parchment under the door and disappears into the shadows.*

I am looking for a boxed set of five special tallow candles. The tallow must be rendered from the fat collected from executed criminals. Coloration must also be black and they have to be of a diameter no less than three inches, and round in shape. I am willing to pay 100 true weight coins each.

If you are able to procure such items, leave word at the Harpy in Vehl.

Rumour Has It / Haven
« on: February 08, 2010, 05:51:45 pm »
A report from Nus the bard at Haven

I have just witnessed the raising of the standard of a new Army of the Silkwood. This force seems to be mainly comprised of light companies of foot and will operate in the Silkwood following recent events there.

Initial reports suggest Corathite Cultists have been defeated at the hands of a paladin led patrol out of Haven. Though other information would seem to suggest many local bandits, and soldiers of Haven also fell in running battles deep in the forest. This along with reports of anomalies in the Al Noth has caused some concerns and the situation remains confused and fluid.

The new army was addressed by a delegation from Spellgard led by a specialist Storold Doesscha concerning the dangers and likely signs of dead magic areas.

General Discussion / Exciting!
« on: January 29, 2010, 12:52:27 pm »
It truly is exciting to see all the applications coming in for the positions of GM/LORE team. Why? Because it shows we still have folks that care about the community and want to see it grow and prosper. At least, I hope that's why you guys are applying :p. Seriously, though, I'm looking forward to mentoring and working with the "next generation."

And yeah, I still miss all you "old folks" who had to leave the team for one reason or another. We couldn't have done it without you.

So here's to the new and old, and the ugly trolls like me! *raises a bowl of cereal-sweetened milk*

Exciting!
