She sat alone in the darkness, her blade Kezzar resting on her lap and across her palms, her eyes open but unfocused as she stared across the abyss of the dark cave.

"Train with it with a shield... without.  Armor... no armor. You must devote every free moment of yours to understanding it... the feel... how it moves with you... and how you are able to move it."

Since he dismissed her, she had been doing just that.  She moved with the blade through exercises against invisible foes, foes that she relieved killing in the battles in her mind.  She moved through the battles the way she remembered them, then she stopped and fought the battle in her mind again, but changed things to end it more swiftly now that she could remember the fight, the outcome, and where the openings and weaknesses were.  She'd fought the battle in armor, then she removed the armor to only the soft leathers she wore beneath the plates, concentrating her movements on avoiding the mental image's strikes to move around the envisioned blows rather than being struck by them.  She'd stripped down to not much more than her skin and moved with the blade through combat sequences again and again, focusing on the feel and weight of the blade, how it moved with her, how she moved with it.

"Then.. you must kill with it.. meditate on your past mistakes in combat.. focus.. and use only the blade to cut down your opponents.. no shield.. you may wear armor if you so desire."

She had killed with the blade.  She'd gone back to the hunting grounds that she had travelled before and challenged the lesser creatures, kobolds, goblins, and proven that they were indeed that.  The blood of her enemies had run down the edge of her blade onto the ground as she pursued the hunt, seeking death, seeking perfection.

"Once you are capable of bringing them down swiftly and with nought but a scratch or two.. you will be moving naturally with the blade."

The goblins had fallen without hardly a scratch to her armor, their pitiful knives glancing off of her shield as she angled it against them the way he had taught her, to off-balance them, to use their attack against them.  Then she fought them without the shield, and found that she was ready for them, to move her body away from the blows, move with them, so that there was hardly a scratch to her body.

"At that point... I will be able to start teaching you..."

She was almost ready.

"Meditate on your past mistakes in combat"

She'd let their taunting get the better of her.  She'd lowered her defenses, acted without thinking rationally, and it had caused her pain and humiliation.  There were no large groups of females to keep these males in their place here.  She was outnumbered.  It was for this reason she had decided to swallow her own pride and ask him to teach her.  He had warned her lest she should decide to try to use his knowledge against him.  If she was to continue on this path, she would find a way to best these males, not only in the field of combat, but in all areas.  If she was to stand a chance against the Geld'arin as well, she would need the practice.

Her thoughts drifted to more pleasant things for a moment.  To the terrified screams of the elven slave, and how they silenced abruptly.

Mother of Darkness, take my sacrifice.
There would be many more sacrifices to come.

Rumour Has It / Traders dead in Weston
« on: May 07, 2012, 12:11:05 am »
Rumors spread of a trade wagon arriving into Weston in the Boyer Kingdom.  The horses pulled their dead masters in the cart behind them.  Other than being thirsty and tired, the horses seemed none the worse for wear, having apparently traveled the path enough to know the way.  Both traders seemed to have been burned in some way, with red blisters on one and skin nearly black and charred on the other.  Oddly enough, though, their clothes and wares were completely unscathed by the flames.

Rumour Has It / Unexplained Deaths
« on: April 23, 2012, 06:22:53 am »
Rumors out of the Boyer Kingdom have started spreading about three families near Haper's Crossing that seemed to have been burned to death, but no one knows how or why.

With all that has happened lately, some are wondering if Layonara has been cursed by the gods.

Rumour Has It / Demon Patrol
« on: April 03, 2012, 03:18:08 pm »
Commander Daniella Stormhaven, Champion of Toran's Divine Will, seeks for volunteers to supplement the usual Siphe Garra patrols surrounding Fiorez City in the Orsgaunt Mountains to push back the demons and giants and other such fiends that reside there.

//8pm EST in place of the PnP quest that was cancelled.  Meet at what was once the Fort of Last Hope, but please rp that you are not allowed in the city, or at least not without guarded escort as the city is under strict martial control.  Meet on the side with the transition that links to the Orsgaunt Mountains.

Since the quest tonight is cancelled, I'm thinking of running a patrol through the Orsgaunt Mountains.  High danger expected.  Rp is a must.  Enemies of Toran beware.

Thanks a bunch!

Development Journals and Discussion / Letters from Taur'en
« on: March 22, 2012, 09:10:57 am »
Sir Maxamillian De'Lourney
C/O Temple of Rofirein
Fort Vehl, Co'rys Kingdom

Dear Sir,

I've arrived in Taur'en, and my caravan has reached Bydell Castle.  My orders here are fairly vague for now, as they have no real presence of our faith in any official capacity here.  Yesterday, there was a rather large crowd of people and a few military leaders.  They are sending a caravan from Bydell Castle to Hazen, and then on to Fort Angle.  Their military is stretched due to the border conflict with Sagewald, so they have taken to hire mercenaries to transport their goods.  I don't like the idea of hiring unknown people with unknown loyalties, but they seem to see me as just another mercenary as well.  Obviously, I am not, but they don't seem to know the difference.  I've refused pay for the mission just the same.  I will accept food and shelter, but I wasn't sent here to be a mercenary.

Some of the people here I recognize, for good or ill.  The Toranite Commander Lance Stargazer is here, for one.  I don't know what his mission here is, but his reputation far precedes him.  He seems to be traveling with his wife, so perhaps they were on some sort of vacation and got pulled aside for a mission.  There is also an Ilsarian who owns an inn in Mariner's Hold in Sagewald.  One thing of concern is the criminal who was banished from Fort Vehl for murder and vigilantism, Tyra Dragonheart.  She seems to be taking on some sort of leadership role here, which makes me a bit nervous.  There are scatterings of humans, elves, and dwarves of seemingly all faiths or no faith at all.  I have an uneasy feeling about a couple of them whom Rofirein has let me know his feelings about their gods and that they are enemies.  I do feel that I should be here, not just because of my assignment and mission, but because I do hope that I can do some good here.

We leave for Hazen in the morning.  I pray that you are well.  I don't know where to instruct you to send word just yet.  Perhaps here at Bydell Castle, and hopefully I will be able to receive the letters somehow this way.  I will let you know as soon as I am able.

Yours in the Dragon,
Samantha

Rumour Has It / Grief of Love
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:27:58 am »
After hearing news of the death of her partner, Zarianna travels to the Breath of the Muse.  When she sees SehKy, she punches him square in the face.  Hard.  She then goes to see Gel'larian's body, sending all others away, sequestering herself with him for days until one of the Priestesses of Ilsare finally convince her to let them send him to his final rest.

Roleplaying / Currency in Layonara
« on: February 14, 2012, 02:21:18 pm »
Just as in the real world, there are two main types of currency in Layonara.  Some people value one over the other.  Some people have a lot of one and not so much of the other.  So, what are the two types of currency that Layonara has?

The first one is fairly simple:  Money, and in this case True Weight Coins, or "Trues."  This one is how much your character has in monetary worth, whether it be actual coins, or what he/she has in trade value (furs, potions, metal, etc.)
Can money equal power?  Absolutely.  It means that your character can likely buy whatever gear he/she needs or buy passage through things, and possibly bribe people who are willing to be bought.  It's the ability to quickly and easily press a coin in someone's hand and not have to look back and wonder if you'll be able to eat tomorrow.  It means being able to offer large sums of money to charity at will if your character is so inclined, and it is the means to offer loans to those who need it.

The other kind of currency in Layonara is something that is not as easily measured as the number of coins in the bank.  This is Political or Social Currency.  This is the number of contacts that your character has, the ability to have sway because you "know a guy" in the right situations.  Social currency is infamy.  Sometimes social currency is positive in some places and negative in others.  A character with a lot of power in Arnax might not be as powerful in Westerngate or Huangjin (where they might be hunted or arrested), but might be revered as a demigod in Katherian.  Social currency may be world-wide, or it may be only valued in certain locations.  World Leaders who complete their WLDQ successfully end with a reward of social currency.  It's the unstated reward, but it's probably one of the most powerful things, if not the most powerful thing, that is attained by a successful WLDQ.  But WL's are not the only PC's with social currency, and it's not really that difficult to achieve.  It takes a different sort of work to gain social currency than it does to gain monetary currency.  Sometimes you have to sacrifice one for the other.

So the question, then, is:  Do you feel that your characters have one or the other type of currency, or both, or do you value one more than the other?

Leringard Arms Inn and Tavern / A Seer's rantings
« on: January 18, 2012, 03:25:44 pm »
Rose, the Seer of the Leringard Arms, walks in in a daze, talking distantly to some unseen person.

"I keep seeing them, Mistress.  In my dreams... every night.  Different.  Always different.  Demons and dragons."

She pauses, and her voice lowers to just above a whisper.  "The red stars glow over the wastelands..."

She wavers a bit for a moment, seemingly at a memory, then blinks, and seems to be listening to someone that only she can hear as she wanders aimlessly through the bar, oblivious to those physically around her and in her own world.

Rumour Has It / Mage's Daughter Kidnapped!
« on: December 28, 2011, 05:07:57 pm »
Word begins to circulate, particularly within circles of mages, that an elven mage by the name of Tharastion is desperately seeking information about the disappearance of his daughter Mila.  The young elven girl was apparently taken along with a branch of what was considered to be a sacred oak when an intruder broke into the family's estate outside of Fort Thunder in the Nesar Kingdom and set fire to one of the bedrooms.  Several deaths have been reported of house guards and a male servant.  Tharastion states he can't imagine why anyone would want to steal his daughter from him, and he fears for her safety.

Just wanted to let everyone know, I'm not disappeared for good.  December is always a crazy time for me regarding work load, so please bear with me, and I'll be back in a more normal capacity after January 1st.  In the meantime, I'm still on irc, just haven't had much opportunity to get in game.

Rumour Has It / Body turned in in Erilyn
« on: November 26, 2011, 03:25:46 pm »
A small group of individuals recently turned in the body of a dead man to the authorities in Erilyn as well as Baroness Colors.  Rumors state something about the body being magically disguised previously as a bag of "taters."

Escort has been dispatched to Fort Homestead to escort a couple back for testimony as well.

Rumors tell of a recent ceremony in Huangjin where several new young people were inducted into the church of Toran's Orders.  These rumors send out a word of hope of the new generation of Toranites taking up the call after so many years of war and death.

General Discussion / Toran Leadership Program Commencement
« on: November 12, 2011, 10:03:50 pm »
Congratulations to those who have successfully completed the Toran Leadership Program series.  They've grown as characters over the last several months, and are now free to roam about the world as "normal" PC's (and they're of age now to play normally)

Great job everyone.  Have fun, and I look forward to seeing those characters out and about.

Rumour Has It / Tragedy Strikes Fort Llast
« on: October 22, 2011, 07:02:38 pm »
Rumor has it that an entire family was recently murdered in Fort Llast.  A local carpenter and his wife along with three of their children were found slain early the morning of Decilar 4, 1488.  William Leox, the couple's oldest son, is said to be in training with the Toranites, and is said to be the one who had found them.

Those responsible have been named as Kane Donovan, a local weapons merchant, and two thugs, Gregor Juritz and Kurt Dunham.  The three were charged by local authorities with five counts of murder and mistreatment of a woman and publicly hanged following sentencing.

The Leox family funeral was presided over by the church of Toran, and the bodies of four of the dead were burned on a funeral pyre.  It is still uncertain what happened to the fifth body, but some say that one of the children was raised and is now in the care of the church.

Thoughts and sympathetic prayers have been offered to the eldest son in these difficult times.
