General Discussion / Scavenger Hunt - Again.
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:54:59 am »
First one was so much fun, I'm going to do this again on Feb 21

This time I'm giving a tad more notice and trying for a neutral timezone so as many as possible can participate.

 Rules.

 1) Teams of 2-8 players - you make the teams, not me.  You can form them before the event or from whomever shows up.  My only request is that vetran players and novice players make an effort to team up together to share the Layonara experience and get to know one another.

 2) Teams must stay together.  No splitting in different directions to cover as much ground as possible.  The only exception would be if particular players were mechanically (ie less than level 10 needing to enter an advanced craft hall) or RP (paladin of Toran entering another temple) able to follow.  Those players would wait for their team at the most sensible spot, not wander off on their own.
You may band together to accomplish a difficult task.

 3) You have four hours to gather as many of the items as possible. You must  return to the start point within the time allowed to qualify. In the event of a tie, the team with the most items in the shortest time wins.  Time is recorded when at least 75% of the team is back. Last time we had some lag issues that almost disqualified a team - pay attention but I will make some allowances for slower computer systems.

 4) Some items will have enough for all teams to collect and others will be limited.  Limited items are a first come, first served basis.  You can, as stategy take multiple items unless I have a sign or tag not to.  This can be part of your strategy if you wish.  I will do my best to make the location as unabigious as possible, however as brilliant as a I am :p  I do not know every spawn on the server.  If you are after bees knees and find a source that I was unaware of, you may be out of luck.  This happened last time, I will try not to let it happen again.

 5) If you are playing on the servers while I am setting up - please don't take the items from the scavenger teams.

 6) There will be items that will require killing an animals/creatures to obtain and others that could be obtained by passive means or gathering.  This will allow more passive characters the choice to participate in a non violent manner without direct GM intervention, but choices and RP within the group are part of the fun. Items will be tagged special for the scavenger hunt such that raiding of guild hall supplies and personal stores will not give an advantage.

 7) Besides bragging rights, the winning team will have an undetermined prize pot and a "really nice item" to roll for within the group.  Second place will have a consolation prize for team members.

Please note - this is for all levels.  There will be items that only an epic party might obtain and those that players of any level may obtain.  It it more about knowing where things are on the server and exploration than levels.  Please don't feel intimidated if you are a lower level.  This is a great oppertunity to explore and get to know your fellow players.

Wild Surge Inn / Bard's Guild
« on: January 15, 2010, 12:14:33 am »
*after a long night at the Wild Surge and perhaps one too many, Flynn begins to wonder*

"What ya thing of a Guild lad? A guild for us bards across the lands?"

"No stupid rules or hierarchy, but just a gathering group to support one another fer drinks, performances, instrument guidance, and who knows, maybe we open a real tavern in these lands!".

Yastin looks at Flynn with a blank stare and shrugs "Whatever floats yer boat lad. You gonna pay for those drinks?"

"Bah!"

*Flynn posts notices at Mistone taverns asking interest in such a guild*

// post here if this would be of interest. No promises, but if I have time, and there is enough interest, I think it would be fun.

~In loving memory of my dear wife, Amanda Doesscha~

Whose life was cut unfortunately short by Trollocs.
May the Lady of Spells forever watch over her soul.

Amanda's Layonaran remains are being transported to her home town on Voltrex where it will be buried according to the wishes of her family there.

Due to a recent request in the Corath forums, we re-discussed the opening up of the Unholy Champion PrC for player characters.

The Unholy Champions of Corath and Pyrtechon have an alignment requirement of CE, making them effectively unavailable for players.
This requirements is not coded.

Therefore, we decided that the Unholy Champion of Corath PrC and the Unholy Champin of Pyrtechon PrC can also be taken by characters of NE alignment (who meet all the other prerequisites of course).

In addition, followers of Baraeon Ca'Duz will also be allowed to take the Unholy Champion of Corath PrC, this because Baraeon followers use the short sword, just like Corathites do. We will not create a separate PrC package for these Baraeon Ca'duz champions, but while they take the Unholy Champion of Corath PrC they would be Unholy Champions of Baraeon Ca'duz.

- Taking these PrCs requires the same difficulty/character submission approval process as the Champion PrC (i.e. one or more CDQs).
- There can be more than one per deity (just like for Champions)
- If your char hasn't got the NE alignment yet, you would first need a CDQ to reach NE before you can go down the road to the Unholy Champion CDQ(s)

If there are any other questions, please post here.

General Discussion / Top Tip: Rushing Out - Don't!
« on: December 31, 2009, 01:32:26 am »
So many times it seems after a long expedition into the depths of a dungeon, just as the party is about to leave successfully leave... someone dies.

One of the contributing factors is that, by the end of an expedition, people have had enough and are in a hurry to get out.

The problem with this is that by rushing ahead, the party gets strung out, and the people rushing ahead spawn the encounters around the people caught at the rear. This is effectively ambushing the members of your own party.

Further, because everyone is strung out, the ambushed part of the party is quickly overwhelmed before those that have rushed ahead can get back to render aid.

Another point to bear in mind, by running ahead, the people that are caught behind can never catch up to the head of the party. So if you're at the head of the party, the least you should be doing is walking so the other member of your group have the chance to catch up, thus avoiding the strung-out party problem above (note, if you're at the rear of the group, you should be running. :) ).

Remember, the Soul Strand not lost one day might just be yours.

Regards,

Script Wrecked.

Rumour Has It / Night of Terror in the Gloom Woods
« on: December 24, 2009, 11:35:41 am »
Bards travelling the roads in the area around Ft. Vehl have been telling tales of a party of brave adventurers besieged within the walls of camp in the Gloom Woods along with Riam and his men.

The tales speak that a great evil befell the Gloom, as an army of undead, led by a dark elf cleric, besieged the camp where brave Riam and his men held in check as best they could the undead scourge.

Meanwhile, in Vehl. A party had gathered by mere chance on the roads outside of Vehl and Moreg, brave gate guard of Vehl, informed them of mysterious rumors of unusual numbers and types of undead in the gloom seen recently.

Under the leadership of brave Roferien clergy, the party plunged into the Gloom to investigate the rumors and were supposedly beset by undead in numbers so great that they had to hack a path through the tides of undead to reach Riam and his men.

The tales then continue to say that on a small nearly barren hilltop the party found itself in a desperate last stand battle against hundreds of zombies and other foul undead.

The party, standing shoulder to shoulder and back to back, were surrounded on all sides.. the screams of the already dead, and those who wished not to join them, echoed throughout the forest.. bringing even more undead to the scene.

There was mention of a great warrior, with a great sword larger than a man, cleaving great gaps in the ranks of the undead. Completely surrounded on all sides.. wading through the throng dealing final rest to the dead. Body parts flew in all directions as his he desperately cleaved them from thier owners merely to stay alive.

Back and forth, the battle flowed across the lonely hill top.. often the party would split.. 2 men to battle dozens of the horrid beasts in a desperate struggle to prevent them from ambushing the party from behind while the rest held back the main body of the undead horde.

Some verses sing of a great guardian mummy being seen in the deepest parts of the woods, commanding powerful magics that ripped the soul from one brave adventurer and left the rest of the party to carry his soul-torn body back to camp to lick its wounds and come up with a new plan of attack.

Finally, the tales record that a dark elven priest was reportedly responsible for the uprising, and was put to the sword.

General Discussion / Penance. 'Tis the season.
« on: December 20, 2009, 06:02:37 pm »
For those of you who showed up to either of my two last scheduled quests only to find a missing GM, I apologize. I could offer a few excuses, some you might consider legitimate, but what's the point. I put on the calendar that I'd be there, and I wasn't. Straight up, my bad.

In an effort of penance and in hopes to be saved by the Christmas spirit, I'm offering up a three day run of standalone quests, starting Christmas day.

The Giver.
The Artist.
The Mercenary.

So, for those of you like myself who will be celebrating Christmas (or whatever you call your day of giving) on a different day than the traditional December 25th, or if you just figure your family won't kill you for playing Layo on Christmas, or maybe because your whole family will be playing Layo together on Christmas, come join one of Layo's well known miscreants for some Layo-Style Holiday Cheer. Cozy up with your egg-nog, hot chocolate, and wassail in front of the monitor's warm glow.

I'll see you there.

Rumour Has It / Unusual Occurrence near Dapplegreen
« on: November 03, 2009, 01:15:51 pm »
While exploring the Battlehelm Moors, three warrior women were swarmed by uncommonly large numbers of Swampkin, close to the entrance to the platinum mines. According to one, what seemed like dozens appeared to just rise out of the mire, almost directly in front of them. Fighting valiantly against overwhelming odds, one fell and the other two were forced to flee for their lives, fighting as they went. The monsters pursued these two to Dapplegreen and beyond. One fought and vanquished her pursuers at the very gates of Vehl, while the other fought and died on the stone steps at Stormcrest. The third, rushing back from her bindstone, arrived in Stormcrest just in time to see her battle sister fall and promptly slew the remaining two monsters there in a quite unladylike rage.

After guarding the site of their comrade's death in Stormcrest until she could return to reclaim herself there, they gathered some reinforcements and prepared to head back into the moors. As this group of, now five, women left Stormcrest, the one who had fallen there spoke eloquently for them all when she issued a bear-like roar of defiance that is rumored to have been heard all the way in Vehl.

Seeking both vengeance and redemption, the group marched directly and purposefully back to the original battle site, without pause and with little comment, slaying everything in their path as they went. Nearly each battle on the way was with, again, uncommon numbers of foes. Once they reached their destination, and the last had recovered herself there, they immediately set about to clear the moors of any remaining Swampkin that still drew breath. The valor they repeatedly exhibited, both coming and going, and the piles of bodies they left in their wake leaves this reporter thinking the appellation of "the weaker sex" to be somehow inappropriate.

Introduce Yourself / Why hello there.
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:30:13 pm »
My name is Ashley, but I'm better known here as Zelda/Ash/Larissa. I'm glad to say I'll be returning to Layo as much as my schedule may let me.

A little about myself.. I was introduced to fantasy at age 7, when the first of the Lord of the Rings movies came out. I'm proud to say my grandma, Serissa, introduced me to it. :) After that, I got into it bit by bit until about November 2005 when I joined the Layo community.

Yes, I'm pretty young at 15, but don't mistake being young for being unintelligent. I know I'm certainly not the wisest or most mature girl, but I do try to understand things to the best of my ability. Also, I've grown up a tremendous bit since I was last a Layo addict, but you can judge that for yourself. ;)

Hmm. Let's see. My hobbies include French club (surprisingly, I'm not very good at French :p ), homework, a little more homework, writing, reading, texting (yes, I'm one of THOSE teenagers), and a little softball from time to time.

I mainly play one character now, Larissa, as Ash perm'd a few years back. I love playing my little halfling, but I doubt she'll ever make it to a high level like everyone else seems to be these days. And I may have another character in the works. We shall see.

Anyways, sorry for the essay here, but it's very nice to be back; I look forward to see all of you in-game. :)

Development Journals and Discussion / Lili Hrathen's adventures
« on: October 19, 2009, 04:21:43 am »
Lili laid down over her new and soft bedroll. It was a complimentary gift from man named Caerwyn Ahrail’lan. She was so happy se had dared to enter that big city. She had learnt so much. Caerwyn seemed to be experienced man of the woods and Lil had imminently felt more relaxed with him than she had though it was possible. Caerwyn had made her a new bow and took her to short sightseeing around the city. He had also introduced her to tall and thought looking woman named Grendola Pigstrotter.
At first glance Lili had thought that Grendola was quote scary. She had carried quite nasty looking weapons like cleaver, fail and big two-handed axe. Grendola strong odor and unusually weaponry was soon explained by her occupation as butcher. She had also given Lili some really good tasting pork meat and that excellent bacon! Grendola obviously knew her trade. Lili had soon founded out that she liked Grendola frank and straight to the point attitude.
Lilis head still felt a bit dizzy about all that had happened. All had gone so fast!
Caerwyn and Grendola introduced her few towns people that offered Lili some work. Lili was gland Grendola had offered to come along. All those nasty creatures in that smelly sewer. Even though of that smell made her rub her nose again. Grendola had made short work of those creatures wielding two-weapons at same time one each of her hands. That was something that Lili had never seen before. Lili had already decided that she would have to try practicing that with her daggers some time.
Lili and Grendola hand also made their way to the woods and town near by. Near that town they have met other travelers. One was a tall orc and other yellow-blue skinned elf. Lili had tried to hide but Grendola hand confronted them with out fear. As with the big humans all was not what hey seemed to be. Travelers where not hostile even though that scary orc in some reason would have liked to carry Lili to his pocket. That was weird because all thing she had heard about orcs told otherwise. It seemed she could not trusts in stories in this part and she just had to find with more about herself and for now on keep her head open minded.  Soon Lili had found herself travelling with orc called Erugor and elf named Elaviera. Lili did not understand what Elaviera talked. It sounded really strange language. Others said she was sea elf what would explain what skin color that Lili had never seen on other elves.
So what had happened next was something what Lili had not even dreamed a do. Together they have hunted down some goblins that had troubled near by villages. Erugor had taken point with Grendola and Elaviera and Lili had supported them, Lili with her arrows and Elaviera with her magic.
It had been fantastic! Lili had never felt so thrilled! She had never even though doing something like that in her wildest dreams. Even now it was had to believe it was true. She had been part of party with big people. Even that was still hard her to apprehend. Top of that they had successfully hunted down tribe of goblins. She shake her head in disbelieve. It would take time to really sink in to her excited mind.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / On The Way To Krandor
« on: September 15, 2009, 08:21:58 pm »
*While the group from Hlint is camped, Jennara explains more about what the Path is.*

About thirty-five years ago, I was made aware of an ancient book.  I should never have known of it, but it was taken by those who would misuse it and I was called upon to recover it by the Heavenly Servant.  With the help of many others, the book was recovered.

This book is the journal of Tuhral Araljan.  He was a general serving the dragons long, long ago, and fought against Sinthar Bloodstone in those ancient wars.  That was, of course, before Bloodstone was banished.  It is not simply a journal, though.  Tuhral Araljan was believed to have been killed several times, yet somehow always returned later on another battlefield.  By some magical means, the journal creates the Path of the Claw.  That is what we call it, anyway; it apparently has no real name.  The Path calls around the world, most strongly, I believe, to those who can change their shape by some more natural means, like the Druids.  It can attract anyone, however, and will pull more strongly on those who are closer.  The call is a lie, or perhaps it should be 'the calls are lies.'  The Path makes promises and offers...
*She shrugs.*  ... whatever is most desired by each, I suppose.  The stronger the mind, the easier the lies are ignored.  Perhaps certain personality types are more easily swayed, also.

Do not misunderstand.  The Path is not a fixed place.  You cannot simply go there the same way we are going to Krandor.  Decades ago, it was centered somewhere in the Mountains of Storms, most likely because the journal had been triggered nearby.

The purpose of the Path is to create combatants.  Their description is similar to the description of Tuhral Araljan - especially strong and very dangerous in combat, almost impossible to overcome and kill.  Whole units of these skirmishers were fielded during those wars.  It also seems the Path will make a shapeshifter of any who are not.  It is a dangerous trial, though.  Only one person can emerge from the Path victorious, and many die trying.  I do not know if those caught in the lies are made to feel threatened and paranoid purposely by the Path, or if that is simply an unintended consequence that serves its purpose.

Much more recently...
*She pauses and sighs, frowning.*  ... the journal was stolen by the Green Dragon Cult.  I can only guess how they knew of the journal, though that is not important.  A reasonable case can be made that the journal is what they came to Mistone for, but that is for another time.  A rather large gathering of adventurers and mercenaries gathered outside Fort Vehl...  Maybe you saw the postings several months ago on various message boards offering gold and danger.  This was an arrangement by another individual to prepare a... makeshift army to wait for some sign of the journal.  I had previously been informed by the Church that the journal had been stolen... again... and was then independently contacted by the individual and asked to address the gathered group, thus making this, in some way, my makeshift army.  *She shakes her head a little.*

We were too late, though.  The Path had been opened again.  Maybe some of you felt its pull.  We tracked it to the Hammerbound Peaks.  Near the foothills, an injured horseman was encountered and we learned of the Cultist army marching for Fort Hurix.  Our group divided, many going to help the city and the rest continuing into the mountains.  I will tell that story another day, and will tell this one much better, also.  For now, know that through great hardships... *She glances at Argali briefly.*  ... our group recovered the journal again, and that it has been taken elsewhere to be kept safely.

What is important from that untold story, for now, is that we were aware of three of our group and six Cultists entering the final trials of the Path.  I have spoken to two of the three from our group since then, neither of whom completed the Path.  I do not know how many others may have reached the final trials before we arrived.  We did not see the faces of all the Cultists, though most were clearly not shaped as this man.
*She indicates 'Ben.'*  Two looked dwarven or deep dwarven, one was taller and broader than this man, one looked like a human or elven woman, and one was scaly, green, and winged.  If this man has been through the Path successfully, he could be the Cultist who spoke to us within the Path, or may be a druid or someone else who arrived before us.  He may, though, have come to have his current affliction without any experience of the Path.  Clearly, though, with the dangers inherent in one who has completed the Path, it would be good to know one way or the other, which is why so many have made so much mention of the Path so far.

« on: August 26, 2009, 11:22:23 am »
Wasn't going to make a public post about this because I didn't think it was really that necessary, but I guess I should make people aware that I have stepped down from the GM team and will no longer be running any quests etc.

I will still be here as a player, as much as I can spare the time for, but sadly it's best I step down as I can't dedicate the time I used to be able to writing/running quests, it has been a lot of fun and a big thanks to the team for letting me a part of it.

Introduce Yourself / Hey
« on: August 23, 2009, 03:39:16 pm »
Hey all,
Was a player many years ago and decided (after a little coercion) to head back over and roll up an old friend.

Got tired of playing pointless grinders with no soul, so really looking forward to a decent bit of Rp.

Don't get a lot of time to play owing to a new little lady in my life (8 months old) but figured I can wander while she snoozes. Just need to get my wife on now too :)

Ask A Gamemaster / RP or quality of RP?
« on: August 04, 2009, 12:22:36 pm »
A conversation with another player got me curious about this.  They said that they can sit and rp for hours and never get bonus RP XP from GM's.

So that brings me to this...

This is an RP server so we should encourage those that RP right?  I know it may sound silly for wanting a reward for something you should be doing.  But most go bashing these days to get those rewards.  Seems that we may want to go out of our way to encourage RP these days and not only on quest.

I know I used to get XP several times a week for sitting and RPing. There were a few GM's that would seem to make their rounds and hand out XP for those were RPing.  I think most of those are no long GMing for whatever reason.  So this question is really for the active GM's...

When do you give XP for those RPing and what brings you to do it?

Do you give it to everyone that is RPing?  Only those that are showing good quality of RP?

If it is only the those showing what you think is good xp... what do you consider 'good' RP?

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Aasimar resistances?
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:29:27 pm »
Would it be possible to create 15/- elemental resistance items to be only usable by Aasimar or Tiefling subraces, so that they would be able to benefit from their natural skin resistances?

This would in effect override the 5/- resistance of the skin in favor of the 15/-.

Just an idea, even though I realize both subraces are being phased out and new ones are not being born.  It would be nice to have, if it's not too much difficulty in creating them?
