General Discussion / CDQ vs. GCDQ
« on: June 06, 2010, 11:28:08 am »
Not entirely sure where to put this, but I was wondering if we could make it so that the GCDQ and the CDQ were on different timers?  Basically, that each person on a GCDQ did not have to give up one of their own CDQ slots in order to attend the GCDQ?  With as difficult as it is to get a CDQ run in the first place, I think that by telling members of a group that it will take out their own ability to run something individual stifles group activity, not to mention that by those rules there may be people within the groups that cannot even go on the GCDQ because they are not elligible for a CDQ at that time, or simply may not be willing to go.

My suggestion would be that instead of having them all on the same timer, to make GCDQ's only available every 4 months, and that they must have a specific purpose in mind (not just- we're going to go bashing so we want a gm to help us out).  But this would leave it open and available for any individual member of the group to continue with whatever CDQ schedule they had in mind.

This also would not apply to joint CDQ's where two or more individuals attempt something personal.

Ideas?

Never bothered to get a pony in game because a vile, skull-headed pirate dwarf riding a cute little cuddly pony into combat seemed absurd.  But if Kurn had one of these babies... ooh yeah.

All of us who are parents have of course found ourselves saying things that we cannot possibly imagine having just come out of our mouths.  Soo..... What was the funny thing you found yourself forced to say to your child today?

I'm unable to post polls in most forums. The only one I seem to be able to is in the "Guilds and Councils" forum.

I don't know if it is just me or if it is the case for others too.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Some wl observations
« on: June 02, 2010, 10:59:25 am »
Was perusing the wl requirements and I found the following:

What it takes to be eligible to become a World Leader and be approved for a (WLDQ):

The character must have worldly accomplishments. A few things that would count are: forming organizations that last and make a difference to players or other organizations, running kingdoms or being at a high level of royalty that is significant, being actively involved on quests and making a difference on quests in ways other than combat, actively assisting or fund raising in a significant way for the under privileged nations, towns, cities, or NPC's, or receiving a significant in-game title or rank. We are not basing World Leader status on combat and action, everybody does this when they are a hero - that is not what we are after when it comes to being approved for a WLDQ and in order to become a World Leader.

the item in bold is more or less impossible for a player character as I read it, since they absolve themselves of any royalty upon character creation and it would take a world leader quest to obtain that kind of power; suggest removing it.

Just for Fun / Limits of Suspension of Disbelief
« on: May 29, 2010, 02:06:40 pm »
What breaks your suspension of disbelief?

Remember those apparently simple springy things on Chell's legs in Portal?  Those were knee replacements added by the game designers after playtesters thought the character could never survive the drops and jumps.  So a gun that shoots portals is reasonable, but people falling and flying several dozen feet and being fine is outrageous?

I actually agree with that position.  I find it's easy to accept technology and magic doing outrageous things, but there are limits to what flesh can do.  That may be partially because I think characters should have flaws.  It's also because I know what a human is, and altering the universe to make a human into something it's not breaks my suspension of disbelief.  If you want a human who can survive a three hundred foot jump and keep going as if there were no impact force, make him a cyborg or a robot instead.  Or make it happen in the Matrix, where things aren't real in the first place.  Now he's not just a human; he has been modified by the magic of technology.

I'm not sure where the line is, exactly.  A little exaggeration of real-world ability is good.  That makes things exciting and heroic.  Something that completely disregards the physics of a body isn't going to go over so well, though.  I think that's where my point was leaning [post=1313692]here[/post].  "There's a point where combat power goes from cool to ridiculous," basically.

So, one thing that breaks my suspension of disbelief is over-extension of the abilities and limits of human (and human-like) bodies.  Pretty broad one, huh?  Lot of stuff fits in there.

What suspends your suspension of disbelief?

The Coalition

  Goals:
  • Provide      support to members own goals
  • Work      against political and moral corruption
  • Undermine      evil, unlawful activities either by bringing the Law to bear, or by taking      matters into one’s own hands.
  • Indirectly      support Organizations aiming for Order and the Greater Good without strict      adherence to it.
  • Provide      aid to the underprivileged and downtrodden in order to build resistance      against corrupt governments
Members: (other affiliations)
  • Tyra      Dragonheart (Leader)
  • Bella Poetr
  • Andrew      William Reid
  • Dot      Stroven
  • Acilius      Shadowbane
  • Daniel      Benjamin Poetr
  • Gurnorhn
  • Rottie
Guildhouse: Abandoned Fort, Dapplegreen Forest

History:  It all started as an idea.  Tyra saw the decaying tower in the outskirts of Dapplegreen as a base for... something.  She didn’t know what, yet.  But she knew she wanted it...
She figured out when she got her hands on the deed, and realized first hand the 'nature’ of things in Co’rys.  Faced with the knowledge of the kinds of things she did in pursuit of the tower, she decided to make the tower into a symbol of something better, of a way of life that could replace the way things are in the otherwise corruption-filled kingdom.  She needed help though.  Alone she could not achieve what she felt needed to be done.  And the first thing needing to be done was cleaning the tower of an undead curse.  Calling on an old friend, a well respected Paladin of Toran, Tyra managed to gather a group of adventurous Toranites (and some others) to go about solving the mystery of the Tower.  After a failed assault and some time spent re-evaluating the situation, Tyra’s Ilsarian friend, Andrew, and a musical Paladin uncovered the mystery of the Tower, allowing Tyra to find a necromancer’s orb, which caused any who fell in the tower to rise again as the undead.
Following this, Tyra set out to gather a group whom she could work with in order to try and change things for the better in Co’rys.  She approached many people of various ways of life, each having a role in mind that will help further the goals she hoped could be achieved through cooperation.  Having gathered a number of interested people, Tyra feels ready to set forth with trying to bring some light to the dark corners of Co’rys.

How to Join:  ICly?  Get Tyra's attention somehow, and she will invite you into the circle.  OOCly?  PM me with why you'd like to join and we can work on the how and why Tyra would approach you.  The Guild is informal, so there is no real applying, and it's also covert, so there is no sign saying "Coalition Head Quarters."  We are just a group of players who have decided to work together toward goals we each have, along with the other Goals listed above.

Layonara Server / Open letter on CA changes
« on: May 15, 2010, 08:39:01 pm »
Hello Layonara Community!

Without preamble, I will just get right to the purpose of this letter.  It has been mentioned in several places that there are impending changes  coming to the server. This letter is with regards to the character  submissions process and related details. The changes are posted here in the guidelines, edited into the main  document and outlined at the bottom.

I wanted to write something longer and more explanatory then the short  bullet points that accompany  the spliced and edited in information  spread throughout the generous document. I'll break them down, point by  point, for clarity.

The first note is in regards to the problems we've had in the past  where creativity and lore have clashed.  The best advice we can give  here is: before you spend time working out the details of personality,  of history, of anything, check the overall concept in the Ask A  GameMaster forum. For most class/race/deity/alignment combinations  that people seek, the guidelines and lore are well defined. For anything  else that seems unique or on the threshold, it is best to ask before  investing the time and heart (and even play time) creating something  that is incompatible with lore.

The second is a short note on obtaining new classes beyond level thirty  (30). It's mostly a solidification in 'writing' of existing policy so  that everyone is aware of the terms. Adding a 'job' at level thirty or  after is highly unusual for most people. This should be something like  learning a whole new skill set at the age of 60, maybe 70 or beyond.  That is not to say it cannot be done but it should be considered very  difficult and roleplayed accordingly. The character approvers will look  at this on a case by case basis but will expect a great deal of tangible  development. Tangible development would include the usuals: logs,  P/CDTs, quest development, GM testimony, and other methods.

The next point relates to power level of initial submissions. We have  had this issue from time to time, and consistently enough that we are  simply putting it in documentation. Because the world is a submission  'controlled' world based on substantial lore and accurate roleplay of  the same we request that characters enter the world with the background  that supports them existing as a level one character. Does this mean  that great things cannot occur in the character's history? No, but it  does mean when the player slips into the shoes of the character the  first time he or she needs to be on the same starting point as all the  other first level characters. There are many ways to have this work out  and still be very flexible, so many that I can't begin to list them all.  This has been a long standing requirement and we are simply putting  this into publicized format so that it is available to all equally.

The fourth point is the answer to the question of characters per  player. This is often a question asked by new players and a few have  thought that we only allow one per player so it has been included up  front in the submission guidelines. We will not be raising the cap on  allowed numbers, it will remain at six per player. This is being done  for many reasons. I will emphasize that the primary reason is concerns  about quality of roleplay, not just with the CA or GM staff but also  concerns out in the community that have been communicated to us through  various channels. There is a large concern by many out there that  allowing players to carry more characters then six will further dilute  the quality of roleplay available on the serve and encourage a more  'hack and slash' style of play as everyone vies to raise those  characters to what is seen by most as tolerable ability levels (20+).

The other big reason for this decision is the already thinly stretched  Character Approval Team. In the reasoning for choosing six characters  per player was the concern that people (collectively) would submit a  great many 'cool concept' characters that would require due diligence by  the approvers. These  would likely not see much, if any, development as  a character. While this sounds like more to do with the above reasoning  it comes down to, there already isn't enough time for the character  approvers to go around and we can't see spreading them any more thinly  by raising the cap. Especially when dealing with volunteers, time is a  precious commodity, one we are chronically low on.

To assuage some concerns out there. We are aware that initially when  this came up it was not clear to even some members of the GM team and  there may well be those out there who have more then six characters  spread out over several accounts. The approvers are largely aware of  these (though I won't go so far as to say all!) and again, due to  confusion in the rules and reasoning allowed this to occur. Those people  will not be punished by being asked to remove cherished characters. The  only 'action' that will result of the instituting of this policy with  clarity is if a player submits for a seventh or beyond numbered  character, we will not approve it until such time that they move to have  their excess characters deleted. We will not knowingly approve more  then six characters per player from this time forward.

The fifth point is the use of Graceful Plea for the rebuild of  characters. Dorganath has explained this in his post here, but the  character approval guide had similar wording so it was removed from this  place as well. As it is stated in his post, there will be no more  granting of rebuilds through use of Graceful Pleas. Rebuilds are rare  for many reasons, one of the primary reasons of course being time  investment. There are still times when a rebuild is logical and will be  supported. These situations generally result through roleplay reasoning  such as WLDQ outcome, quest outcome, deity shift for clerics and things  of this nature. Clearly these will be supported without the use of  Graceful Plea.

In our sixth change, we reverted Shifter and Shadowdancer PrCs back to a  CDQ only approval. This may seem counter intuitive when we talk about  making things 'easier' for people to progress. In truth it was taking  twice and sometimes more the amount of time to get these PrCs granted  through P/CDTs alone. Misinformation being spread through out the  community and the time investment meeting the P/CDT entry requirement  was taking more in the amount of months when CDQs are actually more  reliable for information and quicker then the entries. We make this  shift for the betterment of the use of lore as well as to more smoothly  transition players to their desired classes.

The next point that has been edited in the guidelines is an extensive  note on resubmissions to explain that process. There are many reasons  for this and I'm not sure I can accurately articulate them all but I  will make the attempt here anyway. Layonara, first and foremost, is a  roleplay server. Clearly there is plenty of an action element but  roleplay remains the focus. This includes dealing with lore accurately  and correct reasoning behind a resubmission. Under no circumstances  should any request be made purely for mechanical reasons. We know full  well this decision has been not as firm in the recent past but we are  returning to our roots. All resubmissions will require ample roleplay  justification.

I can already guess that some people will feel that this is more  prohibitive, and looking at it on the surface maybe it is. To counteract  that we have opened up new avenues for support when attempting to meet  the qualifications of 'ample roleplay justification.' In addition to  citing logs, P/CDTs and CDQs as reference we are now accepting direct GM  commentary/testimony. This, realistically, was available in the past  but we are solidifying the extension to erase concerns of favoritism,  ever a murmur on this server. If GM testimony is being used as sole  support we will require hearing from no less then three GMs about their  personal experience as GM (not as players) with the player in question.  We are also offering a 'mix and match' solution for those who can't, for  whatever reason, quite reach the minimum needs for such a shift with  just one method. Players will be able to use whatever combination of the  above listed methods to support their request. Realistically, this  solution was already available as well but is being presented to the  server populace in clear and succinct terms.

The eighth point, a note on arguing policy with the approver staff.  Many, many of these arguments are sustained by the applicant using very  old and irrelevant applications. Very many of these situations use  applications that came from before Layonara even instituted it's  copyright and permissions policy. We will not acknowledge arguments  cited from further than nine (9) months prior to the application in  question. Additionally, applications that are cited from before a recent  guideline change (such as the one we are putting in just now) may or  may not be applicable and is up to the various teams to decide at that  time. Our policy changes may stem from anywhere from mechanics (i.e.  balance) to results of a quest (Roleplay reasons) or issues resulting  from lack of manpower just to name a few possibilities. This is by no  means is an extensive list of reasons but given for possibilities in  explanation.

In an upcoming letter we'll discuss some more updates that are coming.  These are efforts that are mostly on the Team side of things in order to  make the character approval process easier on the community (no new  requirements, changes to policies or anything like that). We aren't  completely ready to unveil things there but hopefully will be soon!

Roleplaying / On marriage
« on: May 09, 2010, 04:55:46 am »
Just a short note on marriage, RPing of marriage and whether or not you need to have a GM present.

Q: My character and another player's character want to get married, is that possible?
A: Yes it is.

Q: Do we need to have GM permission?
A: No, you don't.

Q: Do we need to have GM presence during our marriage ceremony?
A: No, you don't. Although we recommend you keep logs. We do ask you to inform us so that we can add to the character profiling thread on the GM forums that certain people are married to others. Else we won't know.

Q: Do we need to have our marriage ceremony conducted in game?
A: No, you don't. Although we think it's a lot nicer of course, because then guests can attend for example.

Q: Can we ask a GM to decorate an area for our wedding?
A: Yes you can. Details and specifics would then need discussing with the GM.

Q: Do we need to have a priest, law official or other official authority present?
A: After some discussion, we decided it's not mandatory. Reasoning here is that in the real world, many places had (and some places still do) have "common law" marriages which requires no ceremony or officiating of any kind; it's just that the  pair lived together as a married couple for some set amount of time.

Q: What about last name changes?
A: That's possible, but then we'd need a request from both players to confirm the marriage is there, and a log would be nice.

If there's more questions, please post them here.

Roleplaying / GM challenge
« on: May 01, 2010, 05:26:42 pm »
I want to test myself as a GM and gather some inspirational ideas from the general population. This is my challenge.

I would like for you to make up a NPC character profile that I have to use in an adventure. All the NPCs that get PM'd to me will have an active part in the same adventure, as long as they meet lore standards. If I have a problem with your character I'll let you know so you can edit it.

RULES
-I ask that you send no more then two NPC character submissions from any single person.

-I reserve the right to rename the NPC. That way you do not know who it is if you are apart of the adventure.

-Do not post the profile in this thread. PM it to me.

-Same rules for PC generation should apply to these NPCs

MJ

P.S. if any GMs want to help collaborate on making this adventure just let me know.

General Discussion / I'm Back!
« on: April 23, 2010, 12:31:26 am »
I took a brief, informal, and consequently (and irresponsibly) unannounced hiatus from Layonara over the past couple of weeks, in an effort to recharge.

And I am recharged. *grins*

So PMs in my inbox, I will be getting to you shortly.

Before that, however, the conclusion to the latest installment of the Tradeskills Quests (Armorsmithing) will be running on Saturday morning, PST.  The event will be in the calendar shortly.  So too will a number of the subsequent Tradeskills Quests - check the calendar and sign your characters up! :)

I apologize for anyone I may have left hanging, but I needed the time to get my head back to working properly.  And now, let the games begin!

Ask A Gamemaster / Dark Elves and the Law
« on: April 22, 2010, 10:39:32 am »
I have a question regarding Dark Elves and Divine Law.  Last night a pc dark elf openly acknowledged his race and even agreed to travel with another party member to Vehl to be registered as a dark elf at the Temple.  It was presented to me that by because of the history of dark elves, the simple open presence of one on Mistone is a violation of the law.  I'm aware that some cities like Hempstead ban Dark Elves openly, but what of the surrounding countryside?  Is it legal to arrest and incarcerate a dark elf that is following the law simply because he or she is a dark elf?   I spent some time in Lore and haven't found a single thing to back this statement up.  Quite the contrary in fact.  As stated in the Law of Layonara -
Principles of the Divine  Court

  • Justice will be done in line with the dogma of Rofirein
  • Each individual has a right to a fair trial
  • Each individual is innocent until proven guilty
  • Each individual has the right to appoint a representative to speak  for him on his behalf
For my primary character, Daniel, only actions and clear plausible statements of ill intent can be judged.  To him, if another character regardless of race is being truthful and following the law to the best of their ability, there is no just cause for an arrest.  Links and thoughts that would give this matter some clarity?
