Ask A Gamemaster / Use Magical Device & Scrolls
« on: December 12, 2009, 02:05:06 am »
I was reading in Lore that to use a scroll with Use Magical Device (UMD) the DC is the level of the spell on the scroll +25.  I have a few questions about this because its kind of confusing.

1.  Wiki says the following regarding this special (+25) check with scrolls: "does not apply to scrolls with no class limitations, to characters with at least one bard, sorcerer, or wizard level".  I'm not sure what "with no class limitations" means could someone clear that up for me?  It seems all scrolls have some class limitations on them (i.e., only usable by wizard or sorcerer, only usable by cleric or druid, etc.)

2.  Also in regard to question one, I want to know if Layonara follows this same exception?  In other words, if a character has one level of wizard, would that allow them to look solely to the value of the scroll to determine the DC check for UMD?  Maybe an example would help: A Wizard with UMD wants to use a scroll of death ward (a 4th level cleric spell); let's say for sake of argument the value of the scroll is $4,000; Would this character need to have a UMD of 5 (which lets him use items up to $4,800), or would he need a UMD of 29 (25 + 4 for the lvl of the scroll)?

3.  Is the UMD check based off your raw UMD ability or do you get the benefit of your ability modifiers and equipment when making the check?

4.  Are item values for sake of UMD based on the value per the Lens of Pricing or is there some other way to access the value of items?

Thank you in advance for any help on this,

Davidhoff

Ask A Gamemaster / spell weird
« on: October 31, 2009, 12:46:45 am »
I noticed a difference in the description of the spell weird in my spell book from that on Lore.

My spell book says: if the creature makes their save they still take 3d6 damage; only d3 hitdice per caster level are affected; if creature has hd more than caster they are unaffected.

Lore says: creatures making their save take still take 3d6 damage, plus stunned one round, plus 1d4 strength damage; 1 creature per caster level are affected; nothing about creatures with more hd than the caster being unaffected.

Which one is right:)?

Thanks

The description in Lore says it's maxed out at caster level 10.  Is this supposed to progress like fireball past level 10?  Just checking...

Ask A Gamemaster / Rust Monster
« on: October 16, 2009, 03:50:45 pm »
I have a question about what equiped items are in danger of being destroyed by the Rust Monster.  If someone could give me some guidance on this I would sure appreciate it.

Specifically I was wondering:

Are all cloaks, boots and belts safe?

Are rings and amulets safe?

Are bow's safe?

Is reinforced cloth (ie, paltinum, cobalt or mithril) safe?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Ask A Gamemaster / underdark spitting necrosis
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:42:07 pm »
I was reading Aerimor's soul strand reimbursement as attached:

http://forums.layonara.com/closed-disputes-grievances-requests/247932-aerimor-lightbringer-ss-reimbursement-closed.html

I had a question.  It looks like one time the necrosis hit him with a ranged touch attack and he did not die, but later on it hit him again and he did die.  Is there a save a character has to make on a ranged touch attack hit to avoid death?  If so can you tell me what the save is and the DC or is that top secret info? (It looks like there is a save involved based on the above).

Thanks

Ask A Gamemaster / Multiclass at lvl 19 is ok?
« on: July 28, 2009, 05:48:47 pm »
Hi,

I was hoping to multiclass Tralek as a fighter starting at level 19 and go fighter from 19-23.  I have started his training and CDT, but after reading Trouble Tempest's multiclass thread...I'm not sure if I can do that or not.

I know there is a rule that says you have to take five (5) levels of a class before 20.  I asked Twidget about that, and he seemed to think that as long as I kept my CDT, trained with some fighters, got some testimonials, and roleplayed it....then I could possibly take fighter levels starting at 19 if approved.

Before I train anymore and attempt to make a class change at level 19, I'd like some official guidance on this.

Please let me know if this would be possible.

Regards,

Davidhoff

*Tralek wakes in the middle of the night and gets out some parchment and a quill and begins to write...*

I can not sleep.  The lure of battle keeps me alert.  The vivid memories of slaying the Giants outside of Audira with my sword holds my smile afixed.  I am having trouble now with my studies in the Arcane; I find myself taking many and long breaks to clean and sharpen my sword and to rethink and rework my missteps in battle.

I find myself keeping my enemy alive in battle and not casting spells that could surely destroy them; rather, I prefer to seek them out with my sword and practice and hone my skills.  More often than not I find myself knee deep in blood and corpses with my comrad Vrebel; there we laugh and revel in our victory bath of blood.

I think I will start formal training with my adamantium two-handed sword with Vrebel and others soon.  I want to get better with it and swing faster and stronger; I want to know how to better strike my enemy; where to strike my enemy; how to use my sword to defend incoming blows.  I am excited by the prospect of training.

As I write this now I am thinking I may have to put my books aside for a bit.  The calling for the art of sword battle is too strong.  I must satisfy this urge or I will never rest happy.  This is my new path.

Ask A Gamemaster / horrid wilting vs shadow shield
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:52:20 pm »
Hi, Tralek was in a cave picking silk and two unusual things happened:
(see logs below)

1.  I had Shadow Shield on and a Troll Mage hit me with Horrid Wilting and did 42 points of magical damage to me after I made my save.  What?  I thought Shadow Shield protected you against all effects of Necromacy Spells like Horrid Wilting?

2.  Other unusual thing was the Troll Mage should never have seen me because I had Greater Sanctuary on; right?  Which brings me to another question: Does having true seeing give one the ability to see through/pierce greater sanctuary?

Thanks for any help.

Tralek

Ask A Gamemaster / Crafting; Exceptional; Trivial
« on: July 02, 2009, 08:48:29 pm »
Question about making "Exceptional Items": If you are crafting (say tailoring and trying to make a belt of cunning), and your chance of success is "trivial", do you still have the possibility of making an "exceptional item"?  Or does the trivial aspect make it so you don't roll and therefore have no shot of hitting a natural 20?

Ask A Gamemaster / gem mining: what helps?
« on: June 27, 2009, 08:22:39 pm »
Hi, just wondering if when one is mining gems (fire opal, for example), does it make a difference who does the mining or what that character's skills or attributes are as far as determining the success of the harvest?  Or is it simply random and everyone has the same chance of a good/bad harvest?

Thanks,

Tralek

Rumour Has It / Dark Elves spotted in upper areas of Rift
« on: June 27, 2009, 08:06:37 pm »
*Tralek submits the enclosed letter to Dalanthar Authorities*

This is a formal report of sightings of Dark Elves in the upper areas of the Great Rift.  Vrebel and myself were recently in the Great Rift and on our ascent upwards, after climbing the chain, we encountered two Dark Elves.  There was a warrior type and some kind of mage.  They were dealt with.  Further on our way up we encountered two more Darkies.

We thought that was it for surprises until we heard some faint horn noises in the distance.  About this time, a Giant not seen by us before in the Rift, attacked us.  This Giant was very large and powerful.  The other Giants parted and allowed him passage to us.  We defeated him, but we both brushed close to death for sure.

This letter is to warn those who travel the Rift to be on their guard.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Sponges
« on: June 14, 2009, 12:54:28 am »
I would suggest the following two (2) ideas to make "a piece of sponge" more available to those who need it (for example, for those who need it to cast the spell "horrid wilting")

1.  Make "a piece of sponge" an automatic drop for certain creatures (kind of like a bodac's tooth is an auto drop for killing a Bodac).  Creatures that might fill this role could be the Medusas west of Wayfare, the Hydra in the Sinister Forest, the Wandering Madmen outside of Dalanthar, etc.  The idea is that these creatures would drop the sponge because it would be a staple of their normal diet.

2.  Allow Characters with a high enough Fishing Craft Level to harvest sponges from some of the water areas that they normally fish.  The catching of the sponge could be an opposed check to their fishing craft level, plus the appropriate ability modifiers (not sure what they are for fishing cause I don't).  This would give characters who have invested time into their fishing ability a new way to get some thing back and maybe allow them to make some money in trade or barter.  I guess the sponges could be placed in the water the same way that carp and other fish are put in the water.

Let me know what you think.

Yours truly,

Tralek

Ask A Gamemaster / arrow damage question
« on: June 11, 2009, 11:04:19 pm »
Questions about arrow damage; please assume the following facts:

Target: Gorgon (please assume this falls into the "magical beast" category)
Arrow head: Platinum
Arrow shaft: Mahagony
Arrow feather: Falcon
(this should create an arrow that does 1d6 additional piercing damage and 2d6 additonal piercing damage vs "magical beast")
Then I add an Elemental Rod Enhancment to the Arrow: 1d6 fire

Questions:
1.  By applying the 1d6 fire on the arrow, does the fire replace the "1d6 additional piercing damage" and leave the "2d6 additional piercing damage vs 'magical beast'"?  Or, does the 1d6 fire stack with the 1d6 addional piercing damage?  If neither, what does happen?

2.  What types and amounts of damage would the Gorgon be effected by on a hit by this arrow?  My best guess would be it would take 1d8 regular arrow piercing damage, 1d6 fire damage, and 2d6 additional piercing damage vs magical beast...right?

3.  Does adding the fire damage to the arrow change both the 1d6 and the 2d6 additional damage to fire damage instead of piercing damage?

4.  How many times can you use a single elemental rod to apply it to a stack of arrows?

Thanks,

Tralek

Ask A Gamemaster / party mem's icon's not visible

Just wondering (I know this is a long shot):

Is there some way to reduce the size of your party member's icons on the right of your screen so you can keep track on everyone?  I have to chose sometimes who I want to keep track of and others are left out.  (this really only is a problem with larger parties; say 6 or more I think)

Thanks,
