Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:58:34 pm »
Welcome and congratulations on a spotless CA record for your submission. You must've done some homework.

Funny, I too joined Layo when a mate of mine bugged me to join for months, or was it a year? I'm looking at you, Shiff!

Anyway, it's nice to meet you, and I hope to see you in-game. Let me know if you have any questions on getting started. Lord knows I've been through the level 1-5 process quite a bit.

Hellblazer, In the past it has let me connect then told me if i was missing anything. I downloaded the top two. Not sure why but i cannot connect, keep getting a timed out message.

Don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but have you patched your client? We use Bioware's 1.69 patch, and you need to do that before downloading Layo's hax and tlk.

Also, when are you getting the error? Is it at the login screen for NWN or on the server screen?

So yeah, maybe offer an NWN tutorial option and a Layo tutorial option, with one or both leading to enough experience to reach level two or three.

This is an awesome idea, particularly on the Layo side of things. Let's face it: if a veteran submits a new character in Layo, we all know how to hit level 4/5 within the span of an hour just by doing the fetch/delivery quests and hitting up the PoI's along the way.

A new player likely spends a great deal of time dying to packs of mobs he or she can't handle because the starting items don't really prepare one for any sort monster bashing at level one. Even killing packs of rats is rough for the lower-con characters. With only 400g, a player has to figure out armor, bandages, and a weapon.

Layo is an RP server primarily, and the difficulty encourages socialization. But if a new player logs in at a time when the server is empty or its few players are busy, then it is a pretty hard start.

I can give this useful OOC advice to new players:

Start at Center. Pick up healer and falcon delivery quests. Get garlic from area behind healer quest giver. You can (probably) kill the owls, but avoid bandits at all cost. (Optional: pick up message board xp in crafting hall. You might want to hold out on this, though, because you get much more xp for reading the signs later on.) Go North to Wayfare. Go North. Go West (follow the zone wall in Hallowlight). Go North to outskirts of Krandor. Pick up PoI, then get parcel delivery quest.

That's the start of it anyway. I know that by using these two quests in an intelligent way, the player can pick up PoIs at silkwood, krandor, silverdell grove, err...that one in Farmer Part's zone, and one in Central outside the temple (which the player can get by going for the relatively risk free aloe that's near there for the healer's quest). It was likely the designer's intent for the player to pick the aloe up from the kobolds from the fetch a stick quest, but those mobs can really hurt a new player. Additionally, the player can use all the back and forth from the fetch quests to pick up cheaper versions of the quest items (from Hemp/Vehl/Center) for Lieutenant Jursen's quest.

By this point, a player should be able to solo some of the other Hemp/Center/Vehl quests. After that, the player will really need to start collaborating with others.

Edit: This game's difficulty and tutorial is on the level of Dark Souls, but that's why I love it.

Thank you, everyone! I will try to get in game more for some orc bashing, Dark Elf plotting, song singing, or perhaps even some monking about with my latest character. :)

I miss you all.

Though now I also wander about another thing. Witch would you say is more good? Trying to make peace and try teaching the creature how to be good... or just go all out and genocide them?

Clerics of Az'Atta and other passive deities would argue the former while Toranites, Voraxians, and many, many others would argue the latter.

On the subject of Wemics and other generally friendly exotic races (in which I will include sea elves), I would expect some amount of misidentification, fear, and violence directed at such creatures. First, Wemics and Sea Elves do not have the common ear at creation unless it is approved by the CA team. This means that they must rely on non-verbal modes of communication, which is problematic when facing a scared or angry townsperson/adventurer. Additionally, these races are largely unknown to the populace apart from a few towns (thinking of the Shrines to Shindaleria on Dregar and Druids).

Wemics in particular are problematic because they are large and have sharp claws, which are both threatening.

In short, if you're playing an exotic, friendly race, then expect problems.

These problems, however, are minute compared to playing an exposed monstrous character. In addition to the previous posters' points, exposed monstrous characters have problems both IC and OOC due to certain quest areas being off limits. Additionally, even a masked monster is barred access from certain places. One should assume, for example, that the guards outside Hempstead would require any approaching travelers to reveal their faces.

From a lore standpoint, a lone, exposed goblin would be unlikely. Goblins are known for their cunning and heightened awareness of social situations due to the way their societies are generally structured. Thus, adventuring goblins would likely study social queues and languages of similar small creatures so they could pass. I don't care to spark any debate on the ethics/value of playing a hidden monstrous character.

Acacea - for her talks and walks with Zahid

Daniel Benjamin Poetr - for his attempt to keep Eoanira Ceviran busy through duty

Kurn, Gorm, and Argos - All very influential characters for Nokka

Andrew William Reid - for consistent opportunities in character development

Anyone who sends a quiet tell complimenting a character despite said character rubbing consistently and constantly on their characters' nerves IC. This encouragement allows me to keep playing strange concepts that don't move far past level 7. Thank you.

Kira looks at the sign and makes a mental note of the time and place. With the Falcon's road laid out before her, perhaps it will be time to visit the man who gave her the reed flute.

New Jersey was hit by that one 5.9, the one where the epicenter was in Washington D.C. Some people were shaken up, but I was driving at the time and didn't even feel it.

I'm no DM, but I'm certain that a PC can roll a 1 and save against an attack based off bonus alone. That's why high wisdom characters like Druids/Clerics don't need to buff death ward in Storold's.

Congrats to both Gilshem and Ed. Soon the only LORE Ed'll be master of will be The Lorax.

It pleases me to think that years down the line Gilshem will be editing his child's bio, and he'll hand it back during breakfast and say, "This is a really good first submission, but there are a few details that don't match up..."

Kudos to Sehky, Ayndel, Armand, and the DM Diva for letting me roll out Bill Walker as intended (passively interested) during a brief impromptu. I had a good time, and the report on the scroll came out nicely.

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: A Little Help Please
« on: October 23, 2011, 01:14:23 am »
It should just be accepted that there must exist a persistent world outside that which occurs on the plot/cdq/wldq/gcdq/impromptu timeline. In MMORPGs, this is the mysterious world that exists for the single player, where giant trees carry gold and mailmen need letters delivered that contain the same messages to the same three NPCs. This world changes, but it does so extremely slowly (usually at a rate of once a world-event/expansion release).

Consider the establishment of Center, for example. This mechanical gathering post for our adventurers is, in context, a newly founded colony of active NPCs. Sure it was introduced in a patch, but it was disconnected from a players' actions (aside from complaints about there being no legitimate gathering place for players on a server that was shrinking).

Quests and disaster events also don't require PC involvement, but PCs help. Take the tsunami that hit Port Hempstead and other areas. The wave would have hit no matter what, and it had the potential to drastically change the gaming environment. We were told that much. PCs got involved, but that doesn't mean there wouldn't have been a scenario if we didn't.

Don't forget the cabalists that gave their lives fighting dragons in Audira, and all those other lovely, active NPCs. Then there's that whole Lor/Rael/whatever mess. It's possible it was tied to a quest or a player's actions or whatever, but for me it might've well as been just a bunch of NPCs, that's how far removed my PC was from the whole situation.

I will concede that some royalty should perhaps be dying of old age and sickness and whatnot, but that's the kind of update that needs to be handled around patch time because it will change the client. Until then, assume that the queens and kings are holding audiences at court, listening to the thousand woes of their people and entertaining guests from such and such exotic place.

I don't think of it as what a character would do in its future, so much as I think of what a character would do if given the chance.

Backing out now. This thread is getting a little too heated for my tastes.
