Introduce Yourself / Re-Introduction
« on: September 25, 2008, 09:58:05 am »
Hey, I just wanted to say Hi to all the people who've come into this place in the one year that I've been out of it. I'm back now and I look forward to meeting and making friends or atleast aquantences with as any of you guys as I can.

My name's Jess, I'm gonna be 20 this December (oh gods Im OLD >.<), and I like...well ..Roleplay obviously. My other interests are music (singing, playing violin and viola), writing of any kind, and....I need some outdoor hobbies bad. :( I need a bike again *nodnod*

As for who I played. I really just had one character: An Illusionist named Rhynnala Asantiani with an astounding hatred for the slave trade. She's actually in hiding from the remnents of the Silver Crescent, and where she is she hasn't yet gotten the news of Sallaron's victory, though if she did she'd be proud.

Ill be playing a Mistite wizard as soon as she's approved.

I'm a 3rd year magazine journalism student, and I want to wind up writing for videogame magazines. I actually hope to, sometime before my career is done, be able to interview some of the developers here on what they're doing >.> and get a peice out about them. Who knows, maybe I can pitch it to game informer or something.

 Whoah, tangent.

Anyway, I also happen to work in gaming retail , its hell, but it can be fun. No, you can't have my discounts =P!

Anyway, Ill put some contact information here, so if anyone wants to talk or anything feel free :D I don't shun anyone! =P

 MSN: lynnjuniper@msn.com

PS: To L: Bummer about the whole server thing. That sucks. Hope you find a new host.

Poetic License / The Warrior - A Work in Progress
« on: March 09, 2008, 01:51:17 am »
Howdy folks.  I just thought I'd share a story I've been working on for years here.  It's only a small party of the larger piece, and if you all enjoy the beginning, I'll post more as it gets revised to a phase that I think it's showable.  Hope you like and and PLEASE leave feedback of any kind.  :)

Roleplaying / Looting Policy
« on: August 30, 2007, 11:36:18 am »
Looting Policy

Firstly, this is no way shape or form a comment on how any other group on the server wishes to distribute loot drops, simply what one group of players have decided to agree to and use on runs WE organise which I am posting so everyone knows before they join us.

Secondly, this is not a discussion.....Questions to clarify any aspect of the policy are fine but if you wish to discuss how loot is distributed, please make another thread.   As this post is to convey information not start a discussion if people take it off topic I will be asking for it to be locked.

Distribution of Loot drops

Where sensible the party will have 1-3 nominated looters who will be decided upon before the run starts and where possible pick the characters with the highest Lore to assist in identifying.  Where sensible and time allows loot should always be identified before being picked up.  Please leave all the looting to them as much as possible.

When it becomes time to distribute the loot items then items will be rolled for as normal BUT do NOT roll for an item unless you intend to actually use it.  By actually use it we mean on a regular basis.  If someone rolls for an item, stating they will use it and then we learn it has been sold within 3 months from the time they won it, they will no longer be invited on runs WE organise.

Should no one actually have a valid use for an item then all can roll for it and it can be sold as normal.

Rogues, Bards, UMD and Loot drops

Obviously rogues/bards with a high UMD can pretty much use anything.  Should an item be found that is CLASS specific then members of that class will get first refusal on that item period.  Should they not wish it then it will be rolled for by those that will use it, if no one will use then everyone can roll as above.  By class specific we mean that it is the ONLY class listed in the description as able to use that item.

Loot and High Level CNR

When a high level CNR run is organised, such as (but not inclusive to) emeralds, rubies, mithral, yew then slightly different rules will apply.

If there is enough of the CNR for everyone in the party to take a share then the above rules will apply.

If there is NOT enough CNR for everyone then the CNR will be rolled for as normal, again....Roll if you are going to use it, not simply to sell it.  Once the CNR has been rolled for and distributed then those NOT having got any of the CNR will get first refusal on any loot drops to roll among themselves as necessary.  Once that has been done then the above rule applies to any loot left.

Staying together

Running off and leaving the looter is both dangerous for the looter as well as often losing them XP from the next encounter.  Looters are providing the party a service and as such if you run off you will be given two warnings, if you continue to run ahead you will forfeit the right to roll for any CNR or loot.

Remember, if you roll saying you will use something and it is sold rather than used when another would have used it, you will not be asked to join the runs this group of characters organise.

Everyone in a group makes it possible for loot/CNR to be gathered and as such need should always come first in the distribution, then personal profit.

These rules obviously ONLY apply to runs any of these characters organise.  Each group has their own ways of distributing loot and when invited on their runs then we expect to follow their rules.  This is simply a heads up on what to expect on these character's runs.

The characters organising runs that this applies to are:

Drea
Godim
Sallaron
Muireann
Rhynn
Acacea
Emie Meadows
Beli Stonewill
Buddy Tenker
O'red Stonehall
Alleina
Daeron Stormcloud

Should anyone else wish to add their characters name to this set of rules as they would like to use it for trips they organise too, please PM me.  In fact, even if you’re reading this and thinking “That’s what I do anyway” please still PM me to have your name added.

Even if you don't organise trips as such but like and support this....PM me your name! :)

Roleplaying / If Cha is your dump Stat.....
« on: April 26, 2007, 06:31:58 am »
We have no comeliness Stat in the NWN nights engine....As such, Cha needs to represent a balance between characters attractiveness and 'people’ skills.  10 in NWN Stats is considered as average as I understand it...so with the above balance that would be pretty average looking and pretty average people skills.

I wonder how many people have Cha as their dump Stat...say 10 or lower and have amazingly attractive PC’s who also have great people skills?

Now...I’m sure some of you are saying....”what’s the harm in that?” Well....not everyone uses Cha as their dump Stat...Some people actually do sit and think how they wish their character to be looks and people skill wise and actually put the points into their Cha to reflect that.  In fact....everyone should be doing that at character creation....The whole point is that you can’t necessarily get all your Stats exactly how you’d want them so you do have to sacrifice some things.  If you’re playing your Cha 10 character as amazingly beautiful cause you wanted more Str or Con say....where’s your sacrifice?  The person putting their Cha at say 14 has made theirs.

Now remember it is all about balance...I have seen a Cha 8 character who was played as very good looking....Their IC people skills were terrible, I mean really terrible...It was some very excellent RP on the part of the player who was actually very sociable to be such an anti-social character all the time.

Take my own Cleric of Mist for example....She has Cha 12 and the following in her bio “She may be considered stunning by many but her eyes are what draw you to her, they seem to swirl, shifting with her mood much as the sea would in a storm but within them is a coldness that may detract from her beauty”....Anyone who has met her will agree she is NOT a people person...She is blunt, rude, judgemental and those are often her nicer traits!!! As such, I play her as being slightly more attractive than Cha 12 because her people skills are lower than those of Cha 12.....Obviously those are my perceptions of Cha 12 but most people can apply enough common sense so we are all pretty much working on the same page.

So have a thought when creating your character, requesting a description change and obviously RPing your character as to what the balance is between your characters attractiveness and people skills and if you want to be good at both...actually put the points into Cha to reflect that rather than getting yourself a 'freebie’ and using it as a dump Stat.

Character Submissions / Evil Character Bio Descriptions
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:22:39 am »
I am surprised I am having to type this but after five years of doing this I suppose I shouldn't be suprised.

I want everybody to keep in mind the server and the community when they are submitting an evil aligned character. This is a family server and as such young adults and in some cases children may be reading these submissions. There is no reason to get graphic or gruesome on the submissions, none at all. There are multiple ways to get around the "need" of writing graphic details in a character submission, just use your head and a little common sense and you will figure out a way.

I do not want to see the graphic descirptions in submissions any more, they are unacceptable. If we continue to see them evil aligned character will once again be removed from the world.

 Thank you.

Roleplaying / Emote your heart out!!
« on: March 19, 2007, 07:44:41 pm »
Tired of trying to type in battle?  Tired of repeating your introduction to the umpteenth person?  I have the solution right here!

Those of you that have travelled with my PCs were probably thinking to yourself, "That fellow can type up a storm!"  While I can do that, I've added to my repetoire by taking advantage of this nifty software:  AutoHotkey - Free Mouse and Keyboard Macro Program with Hotkeys and AutoText.

This free bit of software allows you to write rather complicated hotkeys and macros.  The nice thing is that it can intercept the keystrokes before they reach your game.

Take my paladin of Vorax, Wanark.  He had a dozen or more short blessings that he'd say (some in dwarven) when just prior to casting bless or equipping his waraxe.  Then he had longer blessings that even included him kneeling.  Finally, he had the entire Vorax paladin credo he'd use when he visited the temple.  All of these I had assigned to hotkeys outside the game.  Brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?  Beautiful.

I'll give an example from my current PC that you can use to build your own set.  (Careful of line wrapping if you cut&paste into your own file.)
I save this to a file called "rolan.ahk" and then run it.  Ingame, when I hit Ctrl-g a random description of walking will be sent.  When I type in /o description the verbose description of Rolan is output.

You can see that this can have as much flavor as you can think of.  It is especially handy during battle when all I have to do is type Ctrl-f for a fight emote.  (I even have it setup to fill in which weapon he is using to the emotes are correct.)

Good luck!

General Discussion / Help Fund Layonara for FREE
« on: February 29, 2016, 10:52:17 am »
In case you have not noticed, Layonara has some new services for the community, including some new stores. You can read about them here. I have posted some important information about the Burnlounge store in that thread, but I want to emphasize one point in particular here. You can help Layonara simply by getting your FREE Burnpage from the store when they are available next month, and tell everyone you know to either get their own Burnpage from you or through Layonara. A big advancement coming with 2.0 is banner advertising on the Burnpages. You get to choose what ads, if any, you want to place on your page. Then you get a percentage of the commission paid by the advertisers to Burnlounge for everyone that comes to your page. Of course, since all the Burnpages in the Layo community will be coming originally from the store here, Layo will also get a percentage of that commission, in addition to all the sales made through those Burnpages. So, spread the word. Burnlounge 2.0 is coming next month, along with the Burnpages. If anyone would like more information on this, or has any other questions about Burnlounge, feel free to contact me. Dan is very busy with many other Layonara duties, so I am helping him out with this aspect of things. Lane

Poetic License / A young, pretty elf walks into the Surge...
« on: January 26, 2007, 11:43:13 am »
*A pretty elven woman walks into the Wild Surge Inn, chooses a seat by the fire, and brushes the snow off the cover of a harp, which she proceeds to tune - by the time she's done, she's drawn the attention of many of the regulars - which, of course, was her goal. She strums an experimental chord or two, then starts into a proper accompaniment, and her lilting voice quickly joins it...*

//The song is available in midi form as an attachment to this post.

Friends, fellows and strangers, I'll sing you a song,
A story; its object a young elven maid.
A maiden accursèd, though she did no wrong,
The curse a default she should never have paid.

The elf who I sing of - Therise Silverstar,
The child of a house bound for power and fame,
Ensconced 'mongst the treetops of Voltrex afar,
The best of orators all held the proud name.

Great speakers they were and they held such high hopes for the beautiful young elven lass,
Her parents, they dreamt that some day young Therise would ascend to the elf noble class.

Therise was exceptional - straight from her birth,
She was gifted with beauty, grace, cunning and charm -
The pride of her fam'ly, her village and clan,
All endeavoured to see that she came to no harm.

Her hair was a waterfall, chocolate and gold,
Her eyes were hypnotic, her skin alabaster.
Her figure was lithe, but enough (truth be told)
That at even that age, males' hearts would beat faster.

At this point in my tale, most list'ners assume
That Therise had a future of power and grace
Unrolling before her, but do not presume:
The curse that befell her has yet to take place.

She was trained as a speaker, with smoothness of tongue, expected in one who would rule
The Silverstar family the crown of the elves, with Therise to be set as its jewel.

Alas for her family, and for the elf
Her form and her voice were beheld by a mage;
His lust for her made him demand for himself
Her hand in a Bonding, e'en at this young age.

This impudent mage was not homely; indeed,
The man was a gold elf, face noble and proud.
But within him his heart was contorted with greed,
More akin to a Drow, if such things were allowed.

The girl's mother and father were nobody's fools - despite the elf's fair shape and face,
They recognized evil, protected their child, and told the mage "No" in her place.

The mage, now embittered, swore vengeance that day,
'Gainst Therise (whom he blamed) and the Silverstars all,
And, with a last comment, he hastened away,
"Oration's your strength - it shall be her downfall!"

The family was wary; they cast magic wards
'Bout Therise's bedroom, to keep away spells
And magical creatures - they posted a guard;
After all, normal creatures can kill just as well.

But despite all this planning, the curse made it through, for the mage wove his spells with finesse;
Death wasn't the object - for all of his ire, 'twas their pride that he wished to address.

When Therise awakened - when she tried to speak,
The force of the curse was seen only too well;
Therise fell, contorted, pain-stricken and weak,
If she spoke in other than base doggerel.

A subtle curse, surely, but strong nonetheless;
No Silverstar mage had the power to cure -
Young Therise of her curse - they had to confess
That she'd have a lifetime of rhyme to endure.

But one mage offered hope - the best of the lot
He suggested the curse could be weakened instead
After long days of research, he gave it a shot
Knowing full well a failure would fall on his head.

He succeded in part - while the curse stayed in force, any rhyme would placate its compulsion
But her natural language was still beyond reach - she'd be met in debate with revulsion.

Resigned to her status, her parents then sought
To enroll their young daughter in school as a Bard -
The Bardic Academy: there she'd be taught
To placate her curse, though the lessons'd be hard

Now armed with pentameter, rhythm and verse,
Her voice trained to match her appearance so fair,
Rhyming her lyrics to assuage her curse,
And now armed with magic; let mages beware!

She set out in the world, promoting her name,
And seeking adventure - employment as well,
All her work meant to further build Silverstar fame
'Til such time as she'd magic to vanquish her spell.

Now as you've all guessed, I'm the elf from my song - my name is Therise and my geas remains,
But by all the heavens, that fillaanilmew
*she pauses in disgust, then a brief spasm of pain crosses her face and she hurries on*
will pay for his crimes *she grins* amid pithy refrains!

So gather 'round tavernfolk, strangers and friends,
And lend me your hands as you leant me your ears,
Your applause is most welcome (and coins serve my ends!) *with a wink*
I'll be back again often for at least several years!

*With a final, triumphant chord, Therise lets the last note die in the air, before grinning broadly and bowing*

// This was Therise's character submission, so I thought I'd post it here.
// For all those interested, the midi was made using Noteworthy Composer (so if anyone wants score form, that's available too.)

Development Related Topics (DRT) / Left handed players
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:31:50 am »
I am not sure if it would be practical or how hard it would be, but I am left handed in r/l and think it would be cool if I could create a left handed character.  The swords would be switched and there would be minimal bonus/penalties to attack and defend based on the strong hand being switched.  Just a thought since 25% of the population is actually left handed in r/l.

Character Submissions / Do Not PM GMs About Character Submissions
« on: October 23, 2005, 09:33:00 am »
Alright everybody.  This is getting out of hand. I want to remind you that we do this for free and when we have time to get in to the forums and game to work on things we do.  We do this as often as we can and we try to be as timely as possible.  Sometimes RL and other things do not allow us to be here 24/7 (no really, it doesn't) even though a few of us would like that and it seems like a few players demand it.  So have some patience please, we need to have a life as well.  Please do NOT PM GM's asking for character approvals and such--this has gotten out of hand.  No more PM'ing GM's asking us to come and approve characters.
  Thank you for your understanding.
