Development Journals and Discussion / Re: Nec'perya d'Oloth

It had been a while since Nym stopped to reflect in the darkness, alone only in the sense that the only other creature in the bedchamber was lost in reverie in her own bed.

He had doused the candles and the moon was high in the nightsky outside the sorceresses home. An array of weapons lay neartly assembled on the desk against one of the walls. Shortblades with enchantments of swiftness lay naked on dark silk next to a long, curved and vicious dagger. Throwing knives with dark runes of debilitation carved into them rested apart from each other and the variety of other weapons, seperated by exact distance intervals. Several other tools, meticolously clean and reflectant remained hidden in the shadows with the rest; devices that could kill but were truly designed to create choruses of pain and reach crescendos of agony. In the center of the arrangement, flanked either side by his two cherished blades: Vharcan & L' In'thuul Uss.. was a journal he had found.
Divulging its secrets to him without the permission of his slumbering companion once he had stumbled across it after having maintained and cleaned the assortment of sharp 'tools'.

He had read it swiftly, and had overcome his initial surprise at finding such an unbelievably indulgent excess such as this.. a record of one's feelings and most private thoughts. So much information ripe for the taking simply for the sake of sentimentality. That was what the memory in one's mind was for but yet again the paleskinned cousins of his people displayed their naivete and weakness without fail in yet another form.
Such thoughts caused him to look over at the covered, naked and sublime form of the elven sorceress in her own bed.. blissfully unaware to the gross invasion of her privacy due to her own folly. Two-fold it was for not only did she actually record them and fail to lock them away properly.. she had taken the long road of sleep which gave him plenty of time to indulge his own curiosities provided he was quiet.
She in herself was a fairly inferior specimen of the opposite gender, ruled by emotion, naive', possessed of a number of psychological weaknesses, beholden to ridicolous concepts of right/wrong/good/evil and ultimately very delicate emotionally if one knew where to strike. She did however possess a strong connection to the flow of Al'noth, and incredibly attractive. Two of his pet likes.

He closed the journal and placed it back in the drawer, his thoughts on its contents and what he experiances of her personally.. connecting dots and analysing the sort of female he was currently bedding in greater detail than he would have otherwise been able to. He noted, for the first time.. that if she was attentive to the details of one's words.. that she was not strictly infertile. He was curious about that considering her previous entry about lost hope and all that drivel. He admired her strength of character in being able to take control of herself despite the pressures of everything around her and the dire consequence.. and price she believed she paid.
On top of that he amused himself with the entries she had concerning him and the traitor Breanna, sending a brief surge of spite coursing along his muscles. What amused him most however, was his confrontation of himself, and the overwhelming evidence before him.. that he had a tendancy towards becoming infatuated with pale-skinned, emotional, inferior, magical females that would through one method or another.. find a way to drive his mind into thoughts of strangulation. Though he would leave the jury out on whether he wanted to strangle himself or them in frustration sometimes.
Zarianna was definently a strong candidate for the top stop of "Driving Nym to Distraction" with her insatiable curiosity and persistant, stubborn pursuit of knowledge about him. Her sense of 'fashion' (and inability to not chase after him about his own attire) and unbelievable vexing ability to stream and endless line of jibes, dramatic sighs, teases and overly happy expressions this way and that; to name a few. It even intensfied when coupled with encouragement from her half-brother.

She also, apart from her own unique mannerisms shared many similarities with the other strongest candidate: Calylith.
Both were fair, golden-haired, strong-willed, stubborn, sorceresses ruled by emotion etcetera etcetera. Not to mention they both had a rather scalding affinity for fire spells that every now and then managed to break his natural resistance to magic. They also, both, had the infuriating inability to actuall control what they unleash.. something they would have been tortured for in the deep and killed if they did not learn. It was why learned mages were preferred to the innate mages, and generally rose higher; but some sorcerers indeed could achieve great heights with control and cunning.. especially when they did not main their allies with careless spellweaving.

His eyes narrowed at the peaceful figure causing him to let out a quiet sigh of frustration, both at her for inexcusably poor control over her own growing might and at himself for his attraction towards danger. But since he knew the most likely fate that awaited him was one that ended in darkness, blood and a grisly end.. he may as well burn a bright flame while it still has fuel to feed it. His mind however soon wandered to a missive he had hidden away in his cloak that arrived by falcon on Zarianna's window while she was out. An unusually elusive old flame had decided to 'resurface' at her convenience and after their minor spat in Center.. hinted at wanting to reconnect.

He would have to consider it.. and he did so while packing away the deadly arsenal that was splayed out across a desk in a house devoted to art, music, love, inspiration and passion. Ironic that everything on this table could create and inspire those very things in a dark, perverted sense of their stereotypical meaning. He fancied it was rather like him in her home.. a Dark One in the home of a family of Moon Elves.

Rumour Has It / Re: Castle Mask
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:20:06 am »
Nym is close at hand due to the map being their best source of information. He asks his question and offers his advice without waiting for permission.

"Check if the farmstead that we passed had this cavern as the closest bandit lair. Or if there was another closer; and if there was, its evident they only use these encampments to stage attacks and then briefly afterwards for loot division. They will ithen swiftly evacuate to a safer, less obvious haven to cover their tracks, and we will not find him or anyone else there... unless we wait for another attack before searching.

If the mark is intelligent, he would break away with a small number and go to the a haven farther from the raid so that if the main group is followed he will not be amongst their number.

I suggest either waiting for them to attack a fresh target, following their trail while they are slow with loot; or picking one of the encampments that are a little further away than the closest, most evident option."

Only idea I disagree with is no. 2. I have a character at level 21, nearly 22. No horse :P Not to mention they have barbarian movement speed for increased speed but I dont think its enough. Haste might give them an unfair advantage early on just to encourage play (not good) but upping the movement % wouldnt hurt really, so long as its not as fast as haste or expeditious or the speed of an epic monk.

"This may be worth the visit after all.."

Nym, upon recieving details about the bounty-mark, begins his search.

//will this be handled quest wise or should we be sending PMs detailing how we are going about the investigation privately?

A dark, foreboding figure enters the vicinity of Castle Mask and seeks an audience with a steward or Captain of the guard concerning the news of bandit attacks.

//PM coming your way Dezz to see whether Nym can get involved IC. Whether I can make it OOC is another matter.

General Discussion / Re: Luring?
« on: April 03, 2012, 02:52:08 pm »
I've heard it before that layo was designed to be an area where grinding was mostly meant to be done in groups to encourage RP. Problem is if a person RPs a character properly that doesnt hang out with everyone no matter who they are, and you then take into account the number of people on layo at any given time thats not a quest (sometimes even during a quest: 4 people). Obviously this means you can't grind anything worthwhile by yourself unless your character is built in certain ways. Now its been brought up before that things like luring etc should be forgiven when nobody else is online or really few people or say a Toranite and a Corathite whatever, because the game should be 'fun' before it should be 'realistic'. That then also could get slippery and lead to a degradation of RP or whatever, its another argument and I digress. The suggested alternatives are 'crafting' or go RP, or log off (which doesn't help the server one bit in gaining more notice when someone checks out the server list in gamespy).

Im afraid my characters have a similar problem (to different degrees) that I am incapable of grinding worthwhile areas alone. Noteably Hector (which ill be able to fix next level maybe) and my new wild elf archer (which I dont see being fixed until much later if at all). Nym is designed to perform multiple rolls in combat from tanking, dps, to even limited ranged support if I bothered to get him some nice darts. He would've provided some warding as well but layo's UMD skill works different to what im used to and so scrolls are out, but not magic items. He's also a pretty decent AC build which means, Misted bandits don't hit without 20s regardless of the type.
Point is, this soloing issue will hit a character eventually im pretty sure, regardless of their build except maybe: really high level mages who could visit an area and just spam deaths spells, rinse repeat later.

Sorry, thought it was since it was under the "@dremora" section.
I did notice what you said, hence I added the part about incase someone came up with idea already or something similar (referring to you).
If you considered my post to be defensive or seemingly 'off' in terms of my mood behind it, I apologise. I had somewhere to be so I was curt in my explanation that it was just a general suggestion. :(

Beyond these two replies, I'm not getting into a discussion on the merits or pitfalls of the general idea any further than I already have.

Didn't ask you to. It was a suggestion that didn't require a reply, I simply listed the pro's and cons of a system I've seen in action before as a sort of 'expect this' guide incase anyone on the team liked the idea of that sorta system or had been coming up with something along those lines.

To try and bring this away from the timezone stuff (which seems like abit of a drift even if I support Aphel in this): There is a system that can be used as a template to create something similar that basically gets assigned to characters or logins. It gives you a set amount of xp every set period of time (controlled by GMs) for interacting with the environment. Standing about doing nothing or not typing anything results in no delivery. But it also means combat and the occasional line every set period of time grants the xp.

Overall, if implemented, people who have nothing to do for whatever reason or have missed quests, play alone alot, don't have the time will be able to login and gain xp. Its automated once a GM assigns it and can always be removed if a person's RP quality is deemed to have dropped/disappeared (i.e they bash too much).

Cons obviously are similar to the WL xp wand, people may get annoyed if they feel they're striving for it and not recieving it. Sorted out by removing a tiered system that basically becomes a caste system seen on Arelith; just have one or two levels of xp awarded.
People who grind alot WILL level faster and thus the server as a whole will level faster (Dorg didnt like this). It can be remedied if GMs judge on a case by case basis who RPs enough to earn the reward (may lead to issue listed above) and who spends way too much time grinding instead.

Its not really all that different to Gms coming online and rewarding people for RPing with XP. They could be sitting in a town, discussing something interesting and their XP increases and brings them closer to levelling up mechanically. One can argue that it doesn't make a fighter and better fighter by having a chat but if it takes a fighter killing a couple hundred creatures just to get a +1 ab, I think you can call the system flawed anyway. If I went out and killed that many things, I guarentee you I'd know how to handle a sword and shield alot better than before I killed them. So this system just makes the GM logging in more mechanical, and you get xp to help you get closer to your level without having to perform genocide to as high a degree as most of us technically do.

All in all though.. if GMs are active and log in and award you XP for RP. I'd say the system isn't broke so do not fix it.. and I don't really think the above is an improvement but if the team prefer it, its there. It only really solves the no GM, no quest, too to no other player's issue by making you gain xp even without having someone else around. Since crafting is tedious for some, and logging off becomes all the more attractive at the time which isnt really healthy for a server thats short on people.

Note though that people with the most time available to play will also benefit the most if they spend it on the server doing anything to trigger the xp grant.

Sounds quite rude actually to start grilling a WL for XP. And abit underhanded if thats the only reason you RP'd with their character.

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Re: Failing a Craft Roll
« on: March 18, 2012, 07:56:20 am »
The xp btw just saying is not for levelling but for increasing in skill.

As for weighted formulae, sure that could work too. Not awarding xp if something is too high a difficulty level for you say 15% and under or whatever gives you no xp. Alot of stuff is restricted at lower levels though and require you to get up to a certain point just to have a 5% chance. So its not as exploitable as you claim, trying harder things to advance up the ladder, not every person in the world wants to learn how to make ryebread if they only ever eat meat, but you cant roast venison without having levels in cooking doing what are unrelated things. Not every cook starts with the same stuff or learns as quickly. Its like saying travelling with higher levels (but within range) to get xp and better loot from areas too high for you is exploiting XP when your character isnt really doing anything but watching and throwing heals, maybe taking pot-shots. Well thats learning by example. This would be learning from one's mistakes. Sounds like it makes logical sense, but I think the formulae idea is a good idea too as an alternative if everyone agrees half is too much.
