The Flash Event
« on: October 29, 2010, 07:14:10 pm »
I recently had an idea that I (at least for me) never found to exist. So if this was already talked of in the seas of these forums or actually exists and I am just unlucky and never came to feel it... sorry about mentioning it.

Would be extremely interesting if there would be Flash Events. Meaning, a GM interacts with an already going normal RPing group in whatever form best fits, for a brief moment and then pops off.

Few examples to make myself clear:

Situation A: A group of adventurers seeking some deep minerals in a dangerous underground Giants' complex decides to step aside to closed free area to rest... but, GM watching, they leave nobody on Vigil. Oh ooooo... bad luck... six Giants just appear rushing in rage into the little closed area after seeing the track of dead Giants that leads to it. If there was a Vigil... the vigil might be asked a Spot and Listen and the group might react faster. After that GM goes away and the group felt that the world might not be always as they expect, as it should be.

Situation B: A group of travelers put on a fire camp. The wind suddenly blows strongly. A reflex/concentration save and/or request for action is required from the players that are closest to it... in case of bad luck they might get some serious burns and/or leave a scorched area in the terrain... or worse... start a fire! (this might lead to something bigger!)

Situation C: While a group of fighting folks are massacring a small group of Goblins... one of them gobbos actually flees... and hides behind a cliff. When the group runs towards it... oh oooooo: traps? trap whole that makes them fall to the middle of a big group of elite Goblins? or a good group of goblins waiting near the cliff for an ambush?

Situation D: While a single player is near some NPC (town crier, merchant, "useless", etc.) the NPC actually interacts with him briefly. Perhaps providing some information... or trying to sell its fish at all costs if commerce has been low... who knows?!

All in all, a pinch of imagination and a well caught opportunity (which there are by the dozens in my opinion) could be the events Layo is laking :D

If something alike happens, is once in a while and it has not been "dug" I'd guess :P but I believe there is a lot of potential in this.

NOTE: I'm not complaining at all! Just stating space for improvement :P

This what people are referring to when discussing GM "impromptus."

Ok. But, at least from my experience... that never/barely happens :(

Speaking for myself as a GM, I can recall at least three times before you took your hiatus from the server where I started into an impromptu near your character but Morunas had already scampered off without noticing the NPCs beginning to speak.  Unless you hang around a region for a reasonable length of time, it's very hard for us to set up anything fast enough.

As for dropping impromptus on groups in the middle of a dungeon crawl - this has resulted in negative reactions from players in the past, who've indicated that they just wanted to bash/mine CNR/etc.  That's why there's the Impromptu Quests Thread, to let the DMs know that you're more than willing to have your character be involved in an impromptu.

Sorry for taking the thread on a tangent, but seeing summaries without the capacity to respond to them kind of bugs me. Everybody wants interaction. Seriously. Everybody playing here longs for GM activity.  That doesn't mean negative experiences are invalid, heh. I dislike the signups because if GMs actually make an effort to represent the setting, then it involves everyone. If you don't want to play in Layonara's setting you need a new server. If the GMs say there has been a flood and you can't pass that way, you just can't pass that way, that's it.

If Rael's #1 blew kisses at me and broke martial law to ask my character out, I would consider that breaking immersion more than anything else, even though it labels me as ungrateful for the time spent on me. Forgive the exaggerated example, but it is only hyperbole and not impossibility.

Just like it is important to be patient with GMs and attempt to understand the team's position and perspective before  making assumptions or generalizations, taking an extra step to understand player reactions can occasionally be productive more than just shutting out those not in the 100% fan club. The kind of impromptu and the actions taken or not taken on them are usually relevant to the reaction.

I agree :) in my opinion GMs should feel free to intervene because they are "the world in motion". Layonara is a pure RP world were *things happen*. To be honest, from all the players I have come to known, I can't believe there is anyone who would dislike a GM intervention.
