why are you waving that sword at me sir?

    hi...

just something a few of us were discussing the other day:

it might help RP a bit more if, when in town or in a merchant hall, inn, etc..., characters weren't constantly wearing their armor, helmets, carrying shields, swords, axes, and so forth.  it seems a little silly that we should always have our 'smashing gear' on.  imagine the poor merchant NPC who has to deal with people running into his shop brandishing weapons....wouldn't they be a bit reluctant to sell you something?  and what kind of captain of the guard lets us roam the streets armored to the teeth and bristling with weapons?!  and nothing is more annoying than having a pleasant conversation with a character whose face you cannot see because of their stag horn helmet, massive tower shield, and swinging morning star!  yes the world is a dangerous place and the towns are sometimes 'frontier posts' or whatever, but i still believe we miss a cool aspect of RPing when we ignore the non-combat types of clothing available in the game.

most characters probably have a set of these 'street clothes' (or should have at least), and they should be probably be worn when in town or talking in a safe area with other characters.  it only seems to make sense, and i know that i have put them in a quick slot so that i can 'change' quickly upon entering a town or building (and armor/weapons/helmet are in their own quick slots as well).  it also adds a bit of drama when everyone in your group has to don their armor, tighten the straps on their shields and draw their weapons as soon as they leave the safety of the town gates or head down into the crypts.  you can even RP that as well ("Give me a moment, comrades....must buckle this breastplate tightly...." , and so forth) with a Custom Text Macro.

just a thought - i'd like to hear if other people have thought about this as well!

While I've yet to play on Layonara, I do believe that taking off weapons armor et cetera should be done, I know that if I was a merchant I'd feel almost scared, brutes might try and steal all my wares! Or some such like that. So in conclusion, yes I agree with what you have said.

Yes, I try to make it a habit of sheathing my sword/bow and taking off my helmut when entering a town. Wouldn't want the guard confiscating my weapons. Although, sometimes when I see a orc or ogre or giant or goblin in town I will grab my weapon. Just on the safe side. Up to this point none of these creatures have caused any trouble, in fact a few I have been impressed with.

I beleive the law of the world, or towns, is that no weapons are susposed to be unseethed unless there is a need, i could be wrong though.

i've always been a firm believer that weapons should be stowed when not in use.  Except for the obvious ones like a scythe or double sword (axe, mace, etc...)

And of course I will just casually mention spell usage.  If you are a cleric make sure ther person wants to be healed before casting healing spells on them.  You will more than likely hear a yes, but there are a few that dont want to be touched.

I agree. Duur always tries to put away his chopur unless he gets muddled and forgets, which does happen from time to time, but what can you expect? ;)
Of course he also likes to show off his chopur on occation, but then puts it back. He also tries to walk slowly through town unless he really is in a big hurry.
Personally I'd like to see more people walk through town instead of running frantically from one end to the other. I can understand a hyper gnome zipping around, but really, why would your average person need to be running all the time?
Duur does run on occation, but that's only when he gets it into his think skull that he needs to get somewhere quickly, or when I need to log off *now* but want to get something done really quickly. "Yes dear, I'm coming, just one second. Really, I'll be right there."

I'll definitely agree about sheathing weapons and such within a town, but there are some characters that will wear their armours regardless owing to their personality, and even beliefs.  I wouldn't want to try it with plate mail, etc, but leather armours, etc. are actually a prescribed set of clothing for Katia (I think) followers.

Gwydion, my Battle Priest/Undead slayer of Vorax wears his armor except when he's sleeping.  All my characters put their weapons away in town though.  And my other characters put on regular clothes in town, well except Zup....he just feels comfy in his crag cat armor, all supple and such..heh.

I usually put my weapons away in town (sometimes even on the road) but I don;t see why my character would take his armor off, especially since usually he is just in town for a while. Though there are times when I walk around in just my clothes, I don't think that removal of armor should be enforced. Also, for some people, weapons wouldn't make sense, I mean, where are you going to keep that 7 foot warhammer? In your back pocket? Just my thoughts though. I put my weapon away and take off my helmet almost all the time I am in town, and make a habit of removing my helmet whenever I am talking to people.

      Just my 2 copper.

Yes to sheathed weapons and yes to walking through towns ( its easy if you're a rogue like Drawna who can just put on Detect Mode when in a town). I'm suprised to see a lot of seasoned characters walking around with their weapons out. Once I got laughed at for carrying a torch at night in the town so I could see (I guess that's not "cool"), but few people get criticized for brandishing weapons.

The torch thing is cool with me. I don't have any characters that can't see in the dark so I wouldn't know.. but I think it is really good RP. :)( plus you do fire damage to the mosters that run into town!)

The weapon thing is a understanding unless it is a VERY big object then it is ok.. sort of.

None of my characters run around in armor in town, however the outfits they wear LOOK like armor but isn't. This is true with people that Custom their outfits to look like really cool armor.. but its only hide.. or something really light, for those times when there is an attack IN town.

I make it a point to have something on me that can protect me... I have had monsters trained on me and I was not happy with what happend. I did not die.. no one helped me defeat the moster that SOMEONE eles brought into town. On top of that they thought I had brought them into town... it was that person that I saw running from them in the first place.

So RP wise no armor, no weapons leave them in your packs. ;) have them all on quick bar just for safty reasons.

It's really sort of difficult to sheathe a morningstar, but even I RP that I am slipping it into a "holding sling" from which I can retrieve it if necessary.

As to weraing armor in town, I think it depends on what sort of warrior your character is. There are many sorts of warriors tha prefer to stay adorned in armor just to be ready at all times. I tend not to be one of them, but I can see the easy argument for it.

It's all the people who run around town weraing helmets that gets me. I swear there are some people that I see that are so attached to their helmets that they even sleep in them. How do you have a polite face-to-face conversation with someone whose face you've never seen?

          That's just my .02 cents.

Certain people simply don't want their faces shown. Perhaps they are horribly disfugured, or they are hiding from persecution.... Two people come to mind... Terril Windbane, and Brac'ar Fireface. I have played with Brac for probably a year now and I have yet to see his face.

**EDIT** with that said I still thing too many people leave their helmets on for really no reason.

Also it's kind of an RP pet peave of mine....when they emote smiling, or frowning, or pouting.....etc, with a helmet on.

heh personaly i never have the problem with the helmit thing, as they are so ugly as the uglyness overrides any usefull perpose they could serve, lue never wears any helm long then she needs to, and i don't think i've put a helm on Syclya yet heh

Slightly off topic but close enough. I've seen probably 2 dozen character sleep in the nude. Not exactly the thing you want to see of a dwarven fighter. ;) Clothes cost 1 GP at the vendors in Hlint. Just pick up a little out fit to sleep in. Please. I'd hate to have my new character lose his eyes too. :)

....and some ladies don't mind it one bit.  LOL  ;P

A good idea to have clothes... its a 1gp and 1 pound item.... not a huge deal to carry. and now that you have clothes your character can take off their armor from time to time.... if it fits the way the character is played.

Yep, had that happen to Aurora... she shouted "OH MY GOD!! put something on Dwarf!" *giggle*
(it always shocks me when people do that)

Its is only 7-10 gold and to customize your look its like 10-200 gold for a complete look.

Just so everyone knows you can change the robes of the Monk, Wizard and the Robes of Acid and so on...

You just need to find someone that can change it, some one with a high custom skill. That gets pricy but its worth it if you want to look diffrent then everyone eles ;).

*grins slightly and goes back to what she was doing*

OK now for a completely different view.

My Character is Derrick Loadson.  If anyone reading this has adverntured with him or just been around him they will understand.  Derrick lives for battle and is always armed to the teeth. (he was actually an old  AD&D character that I brought back to life in Layonara)  He rarely takes off his helmet...  He has even been seen pouring ale through a slot in the helm.  This has also brought on several RP events concerning his face.  There has been two occasions when he removed his helm.  All turned into RP.  But sometimes I will remove my helm and pull my hood up when in town...

As for armor... he would sleep in it if the rules allowed... so don't expect him to see him trotting around in a robe...  its just not his character.  He is always armored because he spends a lot of time in the fray.  In fact I have run into and adventured with a character that actually stated: "I don't think I have ever seen you NOT wounded"  Which inspired more role playing.  In fact other characters have been astonished to see me NOT wounded LOL...  both events inspired more roleplaying.

Last my swords.  There have been many occasions when Derrick has been confronted or questioned about having his blades out... and all have turned into RP.  On one occasion a Paladin stopped me in Hlint and asked somewhat sternly that I sheath my blades.  We got into a bit of a Roleplay as to why or why not Derrick should sheath his weapons.  Derrick being Chaotic Nuetral...  may or may not care about the laws.  Since he knew the Paladin and did not want to cross him... decided to sheath his swords... and pulled out his tailoring and skinning knife.  Then said, "What?!!?  I'm gonna go craft."  and then made a remark about the Paladin enforcing laws because Garent didn't seem able to.   A second time was at the Raffle.  Plen told Derrick that he was among friends and could sheath his swords.  Derrick was like "what swords?"  LOL  so you don't know if he was just absent minded and just so used to having them in his hands that he forgot... or was just being a smart alleck. heh   Another time the same Paladin was in Fort Hope and once again was on Derrick about his swords... Derrick made a comment about him being the Sherriff and said that he would not sheath his weapons... until other characters near the Paladin... but more goodly seeming put thiers away.

One more thing...  that while in some places carrying around weapons might seem threatening, it could be common place in others.  I was on an adventure where we were in a dwarf town.  Someone said everyone put your weapons away... the Dwarf just laughed at him and said that Humans were funny and asked why they would do such a thing.

So... instead of making it an RP rule...  you should RP the fact that someone passes you carrying weapons...
and act accordingly...  or if they are talking with thier helmet on.. keep saying.. "What did you say?  huh?  I can't understand you well with the helm on?

            Just my 2 coppers =P

I have a nice little way of dealing with this in Tom, as a timid child - quite simply, if someone is brandishing weapons at Tom, he will be scared, and not come close, or trust that person.

Also, if that person is Helmed (or hooded such that the face is not easily visible), then Tom will simply not trust them as if they are brandishing a weapoon. For a character like him, who puts little faith in others words, nor has too much use for words himself, if he cant see the face and eyes clearly, you simply wont get him to trust you.
