At the edge of the Gobling waste land
« on: June 09, 2009, 11:36:08 pm »
*A man with red eyes, and a wolf helm that is presently attached to the back of his belt, is seen planting a sing beside the road*

Be forewarned, if you are entering Hlint, you are entering a town that is hateful of races that is not of their own. If you propose a simple gift, they will insult you, your race and your heritage. Do you really want to provide for such individuals?

*A wolf print is burned into the wood under the message*

Tyra jots something across the sign.

Not everyone can like everyone...  Get over it.

She then wanders into Hlint and tosses some coins to some people sitting on the benches.

Two guards on patrol, walking the road from the Hlint garrison, come across the sign.  With a bit of effort, they uproot it, and carry it with them on their route.

As they walk, one guardsman turns to his partner.

An' they wonder why we don't like adventuring folk around these parts anymore.  Not only do they bring trouble, but one thing don't go their way an' they turn on you, faster'n a snake!

His partner just nods sagely, peering out into the distance in the direction of Fort Llast.

At the end of their patrol, the guards stop by the smithy and feed the fires.

*As he passes by there again, he sees that his sign disappeared, so he goes and plants a new one with the same message, he then looks at a trap he has on himself and the sign but shakes his head..*

It may be for the good of all, but harming them would be wrong

*Grovel rubs poop on the sign, so that the next people who tamper with it are unpleasantly surprised.  In postscript, he adds*

"It true!  Nezfen whelp is big ninny.  She kick-a-the-gnomes just cause they tiny!"

*Amgine comes upon the second sign, still covered in poop from Grovel's visit to it.  For a moment his brow furrows taking on an angry air as he reads the primary, original script of the sign.  Then he reads Grovel's post-script and smirks, his mirth stopped short as the wind changes direction and blows the smelly stench of the poop in his direction.*

"Ugh!  Rotten!," he says as he waves his hand through the air in front of his nose a few times in disgust, "Dirty job, but that's just gonna have to go."

*With a determined grimace he easilly uproots the sign and carries it to someplace it can be burned safely, where of course, he sets it ablaze.  Afterwards, he finds the nearest stream or other source of water and cleans himself and his gear off thoroughly before continuing on into town to do his normal business (mainly buying new shovels), showing his usual polite and friendly manner to all he encounters along the way*

*Volga stands by the sign for several hours with a perplexed look on his face. His lips move as he tries to work out the words. Smelling Grovel he looks around hopefuly...Grovel will know what the sign says*

*For a third time he comes and sees his sign uprooted, this time he takes a more drastic approach. For a few hour's he mines some ore, and then smelt it into a thick cylindrical base with a space in the middle to pass on the stem of the sign, to which he then sets properly with a cross beam to make sure it can be pulled out of the base. Then he smelt a mast for the sing and finally the plaque to which he engraves his message, and heat hammers to the stem of the sign. Finally when that is all completed, he goes back to the road and dig deeply, he then put the sign with the heavy base in the hole he dig of about three feet deep, and covers the whole with the same dirt he had taken out. Anchoring the sign down securely. Finally he sets his trap on it a medium electric trap. His original message now containing a warning*

Remove at your own risk.

*He then thinks to himself*

Now try to remove that one.

*he then leaves, obviously cleaning his own tracks out*

//it's about the same process as anchoring a fence mast into the ground with the exception he uses metal as the base instead of concrete.

Having seen the recent events outside of Hlint, Tyra is amused at another sign having been erected.  Going off into the woods for a few hours, she comes back with enough tinder and kindling to light a small fire under the sign, along with enough rocks to make a fire circle to prevent any accidents.  She then lights some the tinder and walks away as it starts to burn, snickering.  As she walks off she mutters...

I hope Zahid is around here somewhere...  in case that fire gets to big....

Then again, I think he'd find the smoking out of a ...  what's he call it...  Termite Hill...  amusing...

//If a DM deems this as abusing "AI" as it were, or deem it should merit consequences, I accept responsibility for Tyra's fire.  :)

*Amgine passes by the site of the third sign, seeing it still smoldering from someone else's administrations, the thought dawns on him that perhaps the sign is on private property and that the owner of the property is going through expense replacing the sign, however inciteful of hate it may be.*

*He decides to ask at the Hlint realestate office if the land in question is in fact owned by any residents of the area, and who they might be.  He approaches the real-estate agent in as friendly and polite manner as he can muster...*

"Exscuse me, Miss.  I apologize for bothering you but I've noticed of late several signs appearing on the land along the road between here and the goblin wastes to the west.  I was wondering who might own that land, and if they might have some sort of grudge against the town for any reason you'd know of?  If the land lies outside the area granted to Hlint by the Kingdom of Trelania's rulers, who might I contact within the kingdom to inquire further?  It just seems to me that if whoever's putting up those signs doesn't own the land, they're likely some Corathite hate-mongers or something trying to stir up trouble for your fine town, and I'd hate for that to continue if there's something I might do within the means of the law to stop it."

*smiling pleasantly he waits for a response*

// as the sign was made out of metal, all the fire did was to make it glow. An open camp fire doesn't have enough heat to make metal melt. It is also, as stated in the first post, at the edge of the gobling waste land, which means it is at the end of the IG map, before going into the fort llast road. But it is facing outward so the people that comes from The road to Fort Llast, can read it before getting into hlint.

*wren passes by and looks at the workmanship of the now smoldering and charcoal covered metal sign. He kicks a few things around a sees the metal base planted in the ground. He takes out his pick and shovel and gets to work digging up the whole thing. When Hlint guards come by to enquire on what he is doing he tells them he is cleaning up a mess someone made. After he gets all the parts he take the metal sign and the metal pole it is attached to and goes to the smithy where he changes the engraving. He then puts out word for his friend Elgon to join him. While he waits for Elgon he collects as many large rocks from around the areas as he can. When he has a large pile of them he proceeds to make the hole where the sign was much much wider and deeper, keeping the dirt and grass in piles nearby. He puts the metal post with the sign in the middle of it and uses four ropes to tie it off so that it will stay upright in the middle of the hole he then fills the hole with the rocks right up to a bit below the ground line. When Elgon shows up he shows him the sign and askes him to use his natural powers to turn the rocks into mud and then back into rocks. Reading the sign Elgon agrees to help and calls on the powers of nature to aid him. The rocks turn to mud flowing together and then back to stone forming a large solid mass. Wren covers the area with the rest of the dirt and puts the grass back as well as he can as Elgon passing his hands over the ground makes the grass take root and flowers grow. They step back to look at their handiwork shakes hands and go their own way.*

*The sign now reads:*

ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES.

Upon finishing Wren with his project, Elgon shifts into a bear and sits next to the sigh for the next 2 days giving the evil eye to all who pass.

A white-haired young man approaches the area with the sign in, apparently lost and whimpering fearfully.

Upon spotting the person talking to the bear, he shrieks and runs away, getting even more lost in the forest before finally running back into the city, once more covered in mud and exhausted.

//Your 4th post - Still no mention of the exact location of the third sign.  But yes, it is stated the third sign is made entirely of metal.  However, though I described the sign as 'smoldering' in my post it doesn't mean I missed the fact it'd been made of metal, or even assumed the metal sign had been melted by the fire.  It simply implies my character found the sign while smoke still drifted up from the sight which had been set ablaze.

//Your 5th post - This is the first instance in which the location is clearly stated as being on the opposite side of the goblin wastelands from Hlint, nearer Fort Llast.  As an aside, homes in Fort Llast are still sold through the Hlint real estate office, so Amgine's still going to the right place to inquire of whether anyone holds title to that section of land, or if it's government owned.

The halfling real estate merchant explains to Amgine that where he's describing is beyond the town's boundaries and quite a ways away from the farthest farm that considers itself part of Hlint, and as far as she knows, that land is solely owned by the Kingdom.

"I can't imagine why anyone would hold a grudge," she says cheerily. "It's such a nice place, don't you think?"
