Dragonheart Taken into Custody
« on: May 05, 2011, 03:55:32 pm »
The criminal Tyra Dragonheart was turned over to the Rofirein Church in Fort Vehl by Captain Daniel Poetr.

In further developments, Protector Aesthir Stargazer and a squad of Rofireinites have seized a tower in Dapplegreen Outskirts in relation to the criminal Dragonheart.  Protector Stargazer was reported to have personally tacked the notice of seizure upon the tower's door and then, with a triumphant smile to those gathered to witness proclaimed, "Finally, justice is served."

The news reaches the streets of Kartharian, where a masked, cloaked figure overhears two dockworkers discussing the catch.  Mid sentence, their faces go ghost-white as they gasp and stammer at the familiar red-eyed executioner's mask before them.

"Justice?  Justice as when one devotes their entire lives to a cause, saving you piddling peasants from your own bloody selves, only to make one mistake to undo whatever good they ever did?  Justice, as when the life of a old man with a blackened, fragile & selfish heart is somehow more important than the life of a kidnapped and tortured little girl.  Where natural causes are somehow redefined as murder?  Where self-defense is somehow redefined as assault?  JUSTICE?!"

*grabbing one of the men, the dark figure wails a tune of dischord, sending them fleeing into the night, shrieking.  The figure quickly vanishes from sight as bedlam takes hold.  The man in the executioner's mask is nowhere to be found, all that remains are some words painted on the wall in blood red.*

Shortly after the arrival of Tyra Dragonheart to the temple in Vehl another contingent arrives ....

.... a veritable battalion of lawyers, clerks and administrators. The group are armed not with sword or mace but instead are possessed of a bewildering array of parchment, books and ledgers. Their weapons are the codification of every law and legal precedent adjudicated upon by the Rofireinite Church in the last century. Chief counsel, Bernard Dalgalbaly, a small man of impeccable dress and manners leads the newly arrived group. Without fuss, he hands over a Section 41 notice of Intention to Appeal and Section 22(a) notice of Full Disclosure of Prosecution Evidence and a Section 165(1) notice of Request for Bail. Additionally the esteemed counsellor requests immediate and full compliance with every minutiae of the Divine Laws of Layonara or states his intention that he shall seek to have the case immediately dismissed on procedural grounds.

He demands, most politely, to inspect the qualifications and training of all arresting officers, jailhouse staff and anyone else involved in the matter at hand. He also waves another sheaf of papers requesting evidence of compliance with the law for the issuing and execution of the warrant of arrest.

The team of lawyers and clerks stand and patiently wait ... they're being paid by the hour (by someone with deep pockets who is a friend of the accused) and are in no rush.

*a note is handed the esteemable Mister Dalgalbaly informing him the suspect has already retained counsel but if he wishes to be co-counsel he should meet with a Knight Captain at the Tavern across from the Temple the next day at noon.*

 The note is unsigned.

Daniel quietly files a petition with the court to lift the siezure of Tyra Dragonheart's property until a proper hearing can take place stating in the petition that others use the property as a home and that by siezing it innocents are being punished unjustly.  As she is already in custody, such an action is premature pending said hearing as it is a punishment for as an unyet convicted person.  He asks the court to keep a guard on the place to ensure no undue damage is done by those of malicious intent until the matter is fully decided upon by a judge.

Daniel's petition is revoked, he is reminded that Miss Dragonheart confessed to her crimes.

The Tower remains in seizure.

A boy runs up and hand delivers a note to Mr. Bernard Dalgalbaly, the message boy is dressed as a novice of the temple. The note reads:

 Sir,

After consulting my client, I have the duty to inform you that your services are not required. I am curious; however, as to who retained you as my client informs me she made no such request. You can send a returning note with Novice John or leave one with the clerk.

 Signed

Daniel Benjamin Poetr, Knight Captain of the Wyrm, High Protector of Rofirein
 Counsel to Tyra Dragonheart.

Esteemed Counsellor Dalgalbaly takes the note from the boy and hands him a small coin. He reads it quickly.

"You are Novice John?"

"Yessir! I am."

"Return with word to Knight Captain Poetr, nominated counsel of disturbingly conflicted interests that given he, nor Milady Dragonheart are paying for my unparalleled services, neither are in a position, by definition, to dismiss me from service. Can you remember that?"

"Yessir!"

"Repeat the message back to me then."

"Knight Captain Poetr, nominated counsel of disturbingly conflicted interests, given you, nor Milady Dragonheart are paying for the lawyer's unparalleled services, neither are in a position, by definition, to dismiss him from service."

"Excellent."

With Novice John's near-verbatim recitation, Bernard Dalgalbaly presses another coin into his palm.

Afterall, good service deserves some recompense.

As Daniel hears the message verbatim from Novice John he frowns then dismisses Novice John with a quiet word, "I shall speak to the Mistress of Novice's about your service, Novice.  You have done well."  Daniel makes his way to the law vaults to look up some references on unwanted counsel and their access to court cases.

As time goes by, Daniel's few contacts confirm Tyra's confession and a small bargain is struck.  Daniel makes his way back to visit Tyra looking troubled.

Bernard Dalgalbaly and his co-counsels-that-never-quite-were leave the Temple forthwith.

Business elsewhere perhaps.

A letter is delivered to Captain Poetr, bearing a purple seal with twin blades crossing a tower.

Shortly thereafter, LAZ arrives, in full formal armor and attire, at the temple of Rofirein in Fort Vehl, and requests an audience with High Justicar Reus.

LAZ is told to submit a formal written request with reason for the desired meeting so that the appropriate church representation might be assigned to the request. It is explained that the High Justicar, while not at all opposed to meeting with those that request his time, has many demands on his time, and there may actually be another within the church that could address LAZ's issue better if his specific problem is known.

//// The formal request can be PM'd if you'd like instead of posted here, but make sure Aerimor is at least copied on the PM. ////
