Books cannot teach common.  Not even if they have clear vocabulary lists, in depth pronounciation lettering, index, glossary, footnotes, workbook sections, homework and all the other fun things that books which teach languages tend to do.  However... Lucinda struck the world with a magic lightning bolt of ludicrous improbability and for anybody to learn any language, they must scream incoherently at a common speaker for at least two months without guide or study plan, and keep an overly in depth diary of their personal relationship with them.  To insinuate that basic academic knowledge could be gleaned from textbooks and independant study... well that's just too logical to be true.  Regular visits to the library?  Madness!  Madness, I say!

I'll work on the other items you wanted though!
