    'special' races and XP
    « on: August 13, 2006, 05:51:43 pm »
i didn't find this on the Races section, so i wanted to ask (but maybe i missed it):

do the special races of Layo (Brownie, Orc, Weimic, etc..) suffer the XP penalties of their "base" race when determining XP penalties for multiclassing?

for example, a Brownie's "base" race is Halfling, whose favored class is Rogue.   if a Brownie character multiclasses as a Cleric/Fighter, would that character suffer the XP penalty for not having at least one of his multiclass levels in the favored class of Rogue?

just curious - it seems that this would apply, but i wanted to be sure.

    thanks!

When you look at the racial information, one of the things it lists for the race is the ECL.  Its usually the last thing listed.  This is a measure of the XP penalty for the race.  No ECL listed means no penalty.  The higher the ECL the bigger the XP penalty for killing monsters than other races.  The ECL does not affect quest XP from either fixed quests or GM'd quests.  ECL goes to 3 at the highest I believe.

I think mikligardr was asking a different question: Are brownies considered halflings in terms of multiclassing?
ECL does impact XP gained from monsters killed only in so far as it raises the effective level of the PC.

thanx Xandor.   i understand how the ECL penalty applies to the special races; i guess i didn't word my question very well ( i do that a lot, believe me   :)  )

what i meant was, as an example:
since the special race of Brownie uses Halfling as a "base" race, i was assuming that as long as the Brownie multiclasses with Rogue, then the multiclass Brownie's Rogue class does not count when determining whether he suffers an XP penalty for multiclassing.

in other words:  does the "base" race of a special Layo race determine its penalties as determined when multiclassing?

      cheers!
