Poison rules and regs
« on: November 28, 2008, 06:00:04 pm »
I can't find the current policies/restrictions/rules/regs on Poison Usage.  I'm thinking of making a Sea Elf Neutral, and think it would help his loss of archery and limit in weaponry.  Just an idea though.  I searched the forums, but too many people talk about poison and I couldn't find the real info I needed.

Thanks
Keith

Well, TN characters can mechanically make poisons, so there shouldn't be an issue with you using them either. The other limitation is that mechanically the tool used to create poisons is a mace, so a  druid or wizard couldn't make them. There's not a large market for them, sofar as I know, so most characters who use poisons make their own.

Even if your dex is through the roof, the better poisons are almost impossible to apply, and all poisons fade so quickly, it's not worth the bother.

really?...

I guess that is so the user has to plan ahead... plus, assassins have use poison, which solves the issue, methinks.

Is that a "all poisons fade so quickly" before or after this change?

Yes. Poison DCs and effects are low enough that just one strike usually isn't going to do enough to be worthwhile unless it's against a PC.

With the DEX requirement to apply poison, I wouldn't be averse to the durations being extended to three or four minutes - I mean, really, how "abusive" can that get, as it's just a bonus to your weapon's lethality.

Sorry, "yes" to an "or" question is a confusing response.

Do these comments (quoted) apply before or after the change? And specifically, have you tried poison since the change was made?

Although the question was directed to Serissa, I will offer my opinion on poison duration, pre-change and post change.

Pre-change, waaaa-aaay too short a duration

Post-change, waa-aay too short a duration.

I trust that has quantified things clearly.

Would you like to petition Dorganath for another 3 round increment, and see what he says?

I agree the duration is still too short, stops me really ever bothering with it.

But yes being an assassin you never fail to apply it.

In NWN Layo, only assassins can even get a tiny bit of use out of poisons. Unfortunately for every other class, forget about it; poison's useless because you never manage to get the stuff applied. I griped and complained in another thread, arguing the reality of how poisons work and that NWN's concepts made no sense at all only to discover that much of the way it works is bioware hardcoded and not changeable. Such is life.

I haven't had a problem with it, but then again, I'm only using small spider and ettercap venom

The only practical use is if you want to RP with it under a GM.  Poison a pie, feed it to a guard.  Get evil points for senselessly poisoning chickens... etc.  Caduzite bake-sales would be the first thing that springs to mind.
