Title: A situation arises...
Post by: Dezza on April 17, 2012, 08:30:09 am
Alarm bells were sounded in Fiorez City and Siphe Castle prompting the formation of two battle groups within an hour that set off for the north western frontier of the fledgling nation when it was reported a column of soldiers was approaching from that direction.

Leading the battle groups were the Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe himself accompanied by a now familiar figure in the region, Commander Daniella Stormhaven.

It is reported that by the time they reached the border the column of soldiers had halted outside the territory and set up a white flag of truce.

It seems that Sir Lance Stargazer had been ordered to lead a deputation to the Principality to speak personally with Lord Siphe on matters most urgent.

Sir Lance's four score strong escort was made up of elite Hilmite Cavalry and a score of Toranite Cavalry still serving in Hilm.

The situation was described as tense as Sir lance met Commander Daniella cordially and asked to speak with Jaedon Siphe alone, a request which was granted.

A large pavilion was then set up into which the two well known figures entered. it is believed discussions on various matters are now taking place within, their content as yet unkown to those beyond the pavilions walls.

Mind you this has done nothing to stop the speculations and suggestions that the Queen of Nesar has appointed a bride to be for the former Kuhl General in order to secure his position and that of his nation with Nesars support. Others wonder if a leading Toranite figure such as Sir Lance would be the bearer of tidings from s nation such as Nesar with their particular background.

Lady Daniella watched resolutely as the two entered the pavilion, and then turned to give orders to post sentries.  She watched the tent for a short time before starting to pace around the camp, trying to look like she was occupied with something other than the discussions going on between the two men, but overall not seeming thrilled.

*Lance's face seems concerned during the trip, till they arrive to the meeting point, he looks up resolution on his face, as they do the introductions and explains his intent to speak*

*After asking cordially for a private meting with Lord Siphe, he nods at Daniella in a way of greeting, before going to the pavillion tent when its ready*

*Once inside the tent, Lance speaks *

Well met  Lord Siphe , finally we are able to met each other .... *his voice is calm and neutral, not showing hessitation as he speaks*

Several hours pass with no one entering or leaving the tent until finally Sir Lance appears briefly to call for some refreshments to be brought.
Lady Daniella, having spent much of the time pacing outside, frustrated at being barred from what was transpiring within quickly hastened over to be turned away yet again by Sir Lance who returned inside once more.

obviously agitated by the events occuring without her Lady Daniella walked away again her back stiff with growing frustration.

As she does so a Fifth rank Siphe Garra approached her saluting her in their fashion and addressing her directly.

"Lady Commander, there is a situation in the camp. One of the Toranite officers has struck a Ninth."

Sure enough as Daniella entered the camp a loud commotion and gathering of soldiers from both sides was occuring near the Toranite horse lines. Officers from both sides could be seen trying to restore order.

Daniella rushes in to the camp and immediately does what she can to restore order and separate the forces.

"Alright somebody better tell me what is going on here and why you are all acting like a bunch of school children!"  The agitation in her voice is very apparent as she stares down those that were involved in the fight- on both sides.

**As Daniella aproaches Lance, he smiles at her with a kind and yet tired smile*  I'll be glad to fill you a bit later sister, And will be looking to it once my duty is over, now if you excuse me, I am being awaited.

**He without more words gets inside the tent*

Within seconds of Daniella's sharp voice cutting across the commotion both sides fall back. Many red faces are apparent on both sides, some from anger and others from embarrassment at the lapse in discipline.

Officers from both sides salute Daniella as she moves between them.

Lieutenant 2nd Toranite Cavalry Bain Alrid spoke first, "Commander, it was a minor incident that was taken out of context by the Siphe Garra and things degenerated from there. One of my men, Cavalryman Odgen knows Toranite Marion MacMurray, now of the Ninth Rank. He went over to talk to her and she told him to return to his own camp. Some of the Ninth rank Siphe Garra assumed he was hastling her and confronted him. A scuffle ensued Commander as his friends came to extract him from the Ninth."

Fourth Rank, Kreager, who had stood at attention the entire time the lieutenant had spoken added. "Lady Commander, I concur with the Lieutenant but wish to add that the Toranite in question became hostile when asked to leave and some of the Ninth were offering to escort him back to his own camp so he would reach there unharmed. As they attempted to do so his comrades came racing up bearing arms."

The entire camp had come to a standstill it seemed, soldiers and servants on both sides had come to a halt watching the confrontation where Daniella was right in the middle.

Peace may have come to Hilm for now but memories of the past had a way of clouding issues.

Daniella listens to the soldiers explain their stories.

"I expected more of all of you.  I don't know how many times we will have to go over this, but if you cannot get it into your heads that we are not at war with each other anymore, then you all better figure out how to pretend until you can."

She looks around at them.  "You are all supposed to have far more discipline than to fall to schoolyard scuffling.  If a soldier tells you to return to your camp, you do so.  End of story.  There will be no more infighting whatsoever between you all.  Since you have nothing better to do than to become engaged in brawls, I expect all of you to double the outward patrols and make sure that while we've all been distracted here with this ridiculous behavior, we do not have enemies sneaking up to attack us this minute.  If you can't find anyone, then you look again.  I want order in this camp.  AM I CLEAR?"

She looks at the Fifth Rank that reported to her in the first place.  "I expect you to let me know if anyone is foolish enough to start something again."

Mari stands at attention as reports are made to Commander Stormhaven.  Her face is held tightly in control but those who know her know she's agitated - and, oddly, a little pleased, but only the very few closest would pick up on that.

William observes the scene and Daniella calmly. A slight frown forms on his face and stays there for a while, until his expression changes back to his usual state.
She's right, but if discipline and peace do not come from within, force from without only has so much effect.
On the other hand, he could understand all to well why things might have gotten out of hand. At least nobody was injured or killed.
No.
There was a burning in him, and he could not deny it was there or quench it otherwise with discipline and restraint. And before he thought things through properly, he yelled:
"PERMISSION TO SPEAK TO THE MEN, COMMANDER!"

Daniella looks to William as he shouts a request at her.  "Permission denied."  She looks at the soldiers gathered from both sides.  "You all have your orders.  Dismissed."
Title: Re: A situation arises...
Post by: RollinsCat on April 24, 2012, 02:27:23 pm
"Yes ma'am."  When dismissed, Mari turns with the Ninth but not before a look at some of the second Toranite Cavalry and a stern tapping of her ankh, seemingly as a reminder.  She can be overheard talking to one of the younger Ninth as they make their way back.  "You heard the lady, let's get on patrol.  I'll walk with ya."
Title: Re: A situation arises...
Post by: Aphel on April 24, 2012, 02:38:11 pm
Or that way, of course. Slow, slow, and with patient steadyness...
He acknowledged the dismissal with a swift, appropriate response following military routine. Upon dismissal, he returns to his post and continues the work he was given with the rest of the Ninth at daybreak. But not without continueing another work he deemed even more important now than ever before: sure, he had tried it slowly, very slowly since he was here, but now it was time to continue with the getting-to-know of hearts and minds and applying what he had learned and observed into trying to bridge the gaps, show them that we must stand together as one or fall alone in the darkness. That we all carry a small light and that we must stand together to drive back the darkness.
"Come pits and high water, I'll be there next to ya, because we must stand together as brothers in arms or die alone." He says to the Ninth next to him. Then he pauses. "I'm fighting for Toran and those here and those back home, so the darkness does not consume all. What're you fighting for, if ya don't mind me asking?"

The Ninth he addresses looks back at him with a grimace. "You're green, you'll learn. We fight for our land, our families and our Lord." He looks over your shoulder. "Heads up, a Fourth approaches."

Moments later the Fourth Rank that had fetched Daniella originally  called out orders for them to move on.

Within an hour of the confrontation Jaedon Siphe, followed more slowly by Sir Lance emerged from the pavilion where their discussions had taken place. Both bore serious expressions.

Jaedon Siphe drew on his gloves and took his swords back from his Third Rank Bodyguard who had stood at attention outside the pavilion the entire afternoon.

"Order the groups to form up I want to be inside our lands within the hour."

The Third rank nodded to a sixth rank nearby carrying a silver horn. The man raised it to his lips and blew three short bursts, the sound carrying across the clearnings where both groups were encamped. A flurry of organised activity ensued as the Siphe Garra assembled to leave.

Jaedon Siphe saw Daniella striding towards him purposefully and before she could speak he frowned. "I'm leaving in the next half hour, I'll give you that long to speak to him." He indicates lance who was talking to some of his own men outside the pavilion. "You make your decision who you are leaving with after you speak to him." With that he moved towards where his own men were breaking down their temporary camp.

Daniella's expression of frustration does not seem to lessen much after Siphe speaks to her, so she strides over to her brother in faith and looks at him.  "Would you please tell me what is going on?"

Of course sister, you look good *he speaks in calm voice*

* they both move a bit away to speak in private *

He smiles knowingly, warm and old, quite so that the Ninth can still see him. Then he returns to his duty with full attention, and like ever before, does it with precision and focus, trying to radiate that no matter what task was set for them, they would achieve it and even go beyond that - just because that was what they were.
Slow, slow - you can stop a drop, but never a river. Train the outside, train the inside. You did so all this time. So go on. We don't have time for ignorance and not the option of accepting failure.

After a private discussion with Commander Stargazer, Commander Stormhaven returns to the camp, her expression tense, her jaw clenched.  She accepts the reigns to her horse, Victory and mounts, looking at Jaedon Siphe briefly, but then averting her eyes to their intended path as she rides up next to him.  "I will return with you and the Garra, Lord Siphe.  My work with you is not yet finished.  There is still more to build."  Her voice is somewhat strained, but she outwardly keeps her posture and appearance as professional as ever.

Riding up behind them, a Captain of the Hilm forces joins them as they form up for the return to Fiorez City.  Daniella quietly explains to the Sovereign Lord that he will be joining her retinue as per his discussions with Commander Stargazer.

*The Hilmite company is seen moving away from the frontier, leaving behind the scouts that may be on that position anyway*

**On the way back , the usually joyful Commander seems to be riding in silence, trapped on his own thoughts, his light eyes are now dark with the burden of his actions, and yet a burden he had to do, somehow calmer, he does not speak much, just give the orders needed, as they return towards the Hilm castle *

Several hours into the roughlands on their journey north again Lances column had made good time but as dusk was but an hour or so away Lance was keen to put as much ground beneath his peoples hooves as he could.

Suddenly his senses reeled with the feeling of impending evil, his horse felt him stiffen and whinnied in response slowing its forward pace. Lance turned in time to see shadows arising from the clefts and gullies of the rugged terrain around him. They closed on the column and chaos erupted.

**The impact to the column was surprising, the two men of the left side of it fell without oportunity, the shadowy figures ripping and breaking thru the armors and shields, the surprise attack was effective on that regard,  no one expected an attack into the own Hilm territory*

**Even with that the moment last few instants, Upon looking at the situation, the yell from Commander Stargazer was heard clear *

- Hold the formation, people, We must not let them get the best of us. -

**The battle that ensued after that was bloody, the enemy a known one but diferent this time, the shadow humanoid form pierced thru the ranks, and yet for each hilmite that fell another fill the position, the situation looked grim for the column of Hilm, when the loud voice of Lance was heard again and that being repeated by the sargeants*

- To the east men, To the east,  Form the line we'll face them in the pass, fight my people, this is the time for show us our bravery, Toran fight with us today. -

*The ranks filling in place figthing and facing bravely pulling back into a defensive formation, then the light was made, upon his white and faithfull Stallion, Lance was seen with The Steadfast Standard on one hand and the trusty blade on the other, The horse lifted itself on their rear legs kicking one of the figures, the field was filled with light , and the men inspired with the spirits and bravery from  Toran's blessings*

**The battle was resolved easily the light made the creatures withdraw, but so did the Hilmites, the price was high,, the battlefield was littered with the men who bravely died on this new threat*

- Gather our dead, people - *Lance spoke* - We'll pay them  respect - *Lance them calls a rider and present him a scroll case *  Make your way to Hilm, inform our situation and the attack, tell them to be ready for our arrival -

*Another day, another battle and yet another bad news for Hilm, Lance look upon the battlefield with heavy heart, but then looked upon the direction where Fiorez city is, then towards Hilm, his resolution renewed*

- The enemy has shown himself. -

**With that the field is seen with the Hilmites preparing a pyre and then getting ready to depart *

As the tired but steadfast cavalry remounted to begin their travel north to Castle Hilm one Toranite cavalryman leaned towards his colleague riding alongside him and spoke softly.

"Did those shadow things look vagualy dragonlike to you?"

The seasoned veteran, also a member of the Order of the Shining Hand glanced back.

"Far too much so for my liking, there was an ill wind today my brother, something terrible happened this day and I am not entirely sure we understand fully what it was."

They rode along in silence after that, each lost in their own thoughts.

*Some days passes after the attack, and some patrols have been seen on the wereabouts of the attack that the hilmite column hit, gossip amoung the soldiers about movement from Khul, and yet the disciplined soldiers keep the work diligently, this is just yet another of the many threats they are used to deal with, fear they feel maybe, and yet their determination seems unwavering, after all the day you aren't unable to feel fear, that is the day you are dead, is the saying amoung them, mockering of the cruel fate that Belinara has for them*

*In the mean time on the Castle, Lance is seen visiting several noble houses, after his initial report to the Lord Protector Alexander, there are increased rumors on the delicate state of health that Commander Stargazer has, his usual joyful mood has fallen silent, his words and speeches are short and to the point, as if the man were carrying a burden on himself*

*The report was given to the Hilmites, on the attack, and other battles, the board has lots of pieces, and each of them seems like a hard choice to do, so many battles on so many battlegrounds*

Within days of the attack word filters to Hilm castle of a similar attack on a Siphe Garra outpost at the southern edge of the Siphe Principality.

William makes calm notes into his diary, writes a couple of letters before returning to offer his help with the aftermath of these strange attacks. His expression radiating confidence and reliance he both requests to help wherever he can as well as trying to do as much research possible into the strange attackers, keeping the words at the banquet with Lord Siphe in in mind.

Within hours of being notified of the attacks to both the soldiers of Hilm as well as the Siphe Garra, forces mobilize in Fiorez City and move out.  Commander Stormhaven and Sovereign Lord Siphe ride together with their combined troops.  The two of them seem in deep conversation for most of the trip, with soldiers riding close enough for protection, but far enough away to give them privacy.

Being just another face in the mass, a strange calmness overcame him where his mind and heard where a serene void. He watched the movements of the column, prayed in his head and looked up ahead where - well, at least somewhere where their Commanders rode. He had no time for talk, was observant and at attention for any brewing trouble. He knew, somehow, that it was coming, and often looked towards the sky and towards Khul. Something brought his thoughts back to a map that he had seen a while ago, and he wondered why the attack took place so far south.
Maybe they are luring us somewhere, leading us around on a leash made of fear, doubt, uncertainty and paranoia.

For a moment, William wondered if the Sovereign Lord and the Chose One had the complete oversight.
And who provided the informations, and who was checking them.

Again, trust, don't think so much.

Maybe he should shudder over so much heresy, and he cleaned his thoughts with litany and prayer. And continued to be on his toes.

The Siphe Garra moves on towards the outpost that was reported to have been attacked.  The Commander and the Sovereign Lord seem to be in their own conversation for much of the trip, but then a bugler sends out the signal that the outpost is in sight.

"Think about it, we'll talk later," Jaedon Siphe says to the Toranite commander.  Then he calls over the bugler, "Signal battlestance Ausir then inform Arak of the Fourth to take his group east and sweep the gullies in that area before joining us at the outpost." The bugler nods and immediately places the instrument to his lips after which the Siphe Garra swing into a flurry of action and approach the outpost.

Jaedon joins a small assault group in the front line and sweeps forward towards the outpost. The small stone construction looks as quiet as a tomb.  Daniella signals her men to surround the area to keep it secure, she then joins Jaedon in the searching of the campsite.  Before long she reaches the door and moves inside where Jaedon is already inside with some of his men surveying the scene.  She notifies Lord Siphe of an evil taint in the area that is slowly fading.  Its empty inside the structure.  Bedrolls are intact, a table has several plates with some rotting food on them, some only half eaten. After several hours its clear none of the remaining outpost's bodies can be found.

The two survivors are brought into the area and interrogated by Jaedon for another hour or two over the incidences a few days ago.  Finally, Daniella calls Jaedon aside and whispers to him, likely asking him to call off the interrogation.  The men, it seemed, were attacked at dusk.  The shadows came from nowhere and surrounded them.  They fought the best they could until the fourth rank ordered a retreat.  Only two of them had made it back to return to the main city.

Siphe considers Daniella's words very carefully it seems, then turns back to some of his men.

"Set up camp, we stay here tonight, we'll leave early and return to the city. I want full patrols sweeping the roughlands at a five mile perimeter from this point and I want to know immediately anything is found out of the ordinary." He looks back at Daniella, steel in his eyes.
"Someone wanted us here, lets see if we can find out why."

**********************************

Hours later, night has fallen and the sounds around the camp are kept to a minimum. Not long past dark there is a scream in the night and the entire camp leaps into action forming a tight defensive perimeter around the small stone structure that housed the border unit. Those who can sense evil can feel that it seems to be closing in from each direction.  Within minutes of the warning Jaedon moves to Daniella's side and darker shadows move through the dark of the night.  As Daniella draws her sword the light illuminates the area clearly identifying the looming shadows and causing them to draw back at the intensity of its radiance. To the surprise of many, the creatures seem to have some sort of draconic features and yet do not resemble Myr'drachs in that sense.  That they are shadows is very clear.

They waver at the edge of Daniella's sword's brilliant light and suddenly Jaedons voice booms out, "Who are you? What do you want here?"

There is no answer at first then one shadow glides forward straining at the edge of the radiance. It speaks in a series of soft whispers that are somehow clearly audible to all those nearby.

"Our master bids us to tell you that Ractrafiorez has taken that which is not his to take. But the master is willing to compromise. Five healthy slaves for each one of his servants you slew, Jaedon Siphe, and from your Master an oath bound in our magic not to act against us again."

There are several moments of silence before Jaedon speaks again. "I will have to speak to Him about that."

"You have three cycles of the moons, after that it will be war." At the last words the shadows fade away into the darkness of the night.

Jaedon has a pained look on his face as he sheaths his blades once more. "It was only a matter of time before Shadrixkayl showed his hand." He sighs deeply.

As the shadows retreat, Daniella looks at Jaedon in the eyes, her features hardened and determined. "We need to talk, Lord Siphe, and this time, you need to explain exactly what is going on. I can't help you if you're going to keep secrets from me. When we get back to the city, I want answers."

His eyes harden to match Daniella's. "I do not have to explain myself to anyone. What I have done has been done for the good of my people."  His hands clench tightly and the anger he feels is obvious.  He strides past Daniella, leaving Arak of the Fourth standing by himself obviously embarrassed at being present when his Lord has shown such open anger.

Daniella watches him go, then quietly speaks to Arak of the Fourth, "I'll talk to him. Just follow your orders, we need all of us to return to the city safely."

He stood his ground and his position, shield and blade at the ready, among the other soldiers, forming a cordon two men deep. He could see shadows, vague blots of darkest darkness in the night, and the runes edged into his blade illuminated a small area around him in a faint and weak, yet determined blue-white light, casting shadows into the faces around him. The ankh on his new pauldron shimmered, and so did the ankh around his neck.
Sounds of armors and boots as the soldiers around him shifted in their positions and stances. He could hear their nervousity and, even somewhat, uncertainty, doubt, fear. The blots of shadows could, most likely, kill them swiftly and easily. William was, at some level of his mind, aware of that just like he was aware of the ground beneath his boots.

But at this particular moment, his mind was mostly blank with thought, a mere container to the light he felt radiating within, letting the knuckles become white around the hilt of his sword.

“I am HIS servant, the herald of HIS light. And if I walk in the valley of Darkness, I shall not fear for WE are what Darkness fears.”

The words spill over his lips, his voice loud, determined, focused and hot from the radiance in his head.

Push away the darkness and fear around you.

He can feel the hot light travel from deep inside to his arm and into his palm and mouth, just like on that day with Jillian long ago. But this time, the battle prayer is different, much different. One part of the light follows his words, and the bigger parts pours into the ragged blade. Sacrifice was steady and calm, its runes glowing – he would strike his enemy with the wrath of the righteousness and then fight and struggle until he died. There wasn't much thinking involved. His heart was on fire, and he could feel the love for Raelyn, for Daniella, for Mari and Marin and Cormac and Hector and Lance and Argos and for all the other men and women around him now in it, bathed in light, embraced and safe.

Light from within, and light from behind as The Chosen One got her blessed blade ready. And as quickly as it all began, it was over. They went away. For now. A cold feeling crept over his neck, and he looked outwards, away from the camp, into the night. The Radiance cascaded down his spine, and his hard and stern face was mirrored in the expression in his eyes.

 So this is the enemy.

And then: This won't work. Normal soldiers don't stand a chance against such foes. And the Order is stretched thin.

Mouth unusally quiet, Jillian is about.  During the day and the interrogations, she can be found outside the tent, eyes sweeping the surroundings and ear trying to eavesdrop on the conversation from inside.  She gives Daniella space in that she isn't always 2 feet from her, but obviously takes her position as bodyguard and advisor seriously by trying to be close enough to act without being stifling.  When her eyes aren't on Daniella or Siphe, they tend to follow Nijau.

As night falls, and the sense of evil approaches, Jillian doesn't leave Daniella.  She is max only a few steps away from Daniella at any time.  Her sword is out and ready.  Her only words being that of mumbled prayers.

Once Siphe storms off angry, Jillian simply makes eye contact with Daniella.. having what to them is a whole conversation, but to most around them would simply be just a quick look and then makes herself helpful without distancing herself from Daniella more than a few yards.

As the column re-enters the Forts grounds and the soldiers are dismissed they take with them the rumours of the shadows and the warning to those who didnt go on the journey.

Within hours heralds throughout the fledgling city announce curfews and only those with special passes can go outdoors at night anywhere in the Principality.

Additional patrols are ordered to the borders and warnings sent to Castle Hilm to the North, to Briardusk in the west and Sundance in the south to be wary of shadow attacks.

Meanwhile in Fiorez City, Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe has announced that within days his people will know everything that is going on.

The next morning after his arrival several horses thunder out of the Fort through the Eastern gate leading to the Orsgaunt Mountains. A gate that rarely opens anymore.

In the lead is Jaedon Siphe, to his back a small unit of Third Rank Siphe Garra, hand picked men and women, sworn to secrecy on pain of death.

As the gates close the dust settles from the passing of their horses hooves on the dry eastern passage ground.

Despite the events surrounding the new city, the work, at least for William, appears to go on as usual. For now.
The hard and brutal training is equally continued, and so is the building efford. At least for him, there's nothing to do but wait, sweat, and work.
Nothing ever shall be in vain - so Toran ordains.

Yet he wished he was doing something else, was allowed to look into this fight between two dragons - alas, the time and the command structure. Maybe it was better this way. It kept him - and his mouth! - away from trouble.

Mari wonders and waits and continues her patrols, yet with a preference for those Ninth Rank that don't engage in gossip.  All the speculation serves nothing and distracts from paying attention and it is in paying attention that the truth will be found...that, and some of those men are worse than the washer-women in Fort Llast when their superiors aren't around.

Daniella looks down at the sudden glow from her own stone inside a close pocket on her belt.  She frowns a moment, then almost reluctantly withdraws the stone and moves a step away from her guard to activate her stone and listen to the message.  She lets out a soft sigh as she hears, and then speaks the password quietly to activate her own stone to transmit her response back.

"I'm here Lance.  Power is short.  I'll have to find a wizard.  Go ahead."

As Daniella's stone loses the magical charge left in it before she completes her final message she sighs and replaces the stone in its designated pouch.  "I need to find a wizard who would know how to charge this thing."  She looks back at Jillian Stuart of the Shining Hand as well as Arak of the Fourth Rank of the Siphe Garra.  "I don't know about you two, but I'm feeling like I've been here before.  Find out where Nijau is.  I need to pass along a message to him from Hilm.  We've got work to do until Lord Siphe returns."

Daniella frowns again as Jillian heads off to find Nijau, and then looks back towards the mountain pass where Siphe and his men rode off into the distance.  "Yes, I'm sure he'll probably be thrilled to have me summoning him."

She places her hands on the stone battlement between the merlons and lowers her voice to a whisper.  "Hurry back, Jaedon."

Almost half an hour later Jillian returns with Nijau who seems to be trying very hard to maintain a nuetral expression. When he speaks however it is with short clipped words indicating his annoyance.

"Commander Daniella. The Lady Jillian passed along your request that should I have a moment you would like to speak with me. While I find it odd you did not come to find me yourself I was by chance heading this way anyway. What is it that concerns you?"

Daniella and Nijau have what seems to be a rather tense conversation before the two of them march off stiffly in different directions.  The guards nearby watch uneasily at the icy looks passed between the Commander and the Sovereign Lord's First Rank.

Several days pass uneventfully, then on the evening of the fifth night, just after night has fallen lookouts on the eastern wall shout warnings, bells ring out loudly and Third and Fourth Rank Garra begin rousing soldiers and setting up defensive formations amongst the lower ranked Garra behind the eastern gate.

The Keep goes into a flurry of organised chaos. Riders are sent out the other gates into the city warning citizens not to leave their homes until further notified.

Amidst the call to arms Second Rank Kajoi arrives at Daniella's quarters, first notifying her and then Jillian in the next room as a courtesy that several legions of Garra have been ordered to assemble at First Rank Nijau's orders at the Eastern Gate as something has been seen in the Eastern passage advancing on the high stone wall of the Fort.

Daniella moves quickly to don her armor and pull on her cloak against the cold winds as she heads out to meet Nijau and the others at the designated location.  Keeping her expression neutral, she asks Nijau for any further information and if he wants her to do anything.

Taking in the chaos, William does as he is ordered and looks around if he can see the others anywhere, stoic preparing to meet whatever is approaching the city with the rest of the Garra.

Those gathered atop the wall look towards the dim light reflecting off the ugly Orsgaunt mountains and the darker shadows of the pass into it from the Eastern gate. Back inside the Fort on the ground six full divisions of Siphe Garra are assembled looking much like large green and black checkered squares on the parade grounds. Torches flare into life at regular intervals along the wall. Tensions mount and seconds pass into minutes.

Suddenly out of the misty blackness of the passage huge shapes emerge. Lumbering Fire Giants bearing huge spiked clubs and carrying massive shields easily bigger than the tallest men in the fort.

"READY ARMS!" Comes the call from First Ranked Nijau. The rattle and clanking of the men and women preparing pikes, swords and crossbows fills the air.

Before the next command arrives however the giants slow their advance and stop spreading out so that a full dozen can be seen. One steps forward and raises a flag bearing a Red Dragon clutching a Green and Black torn banner in its claws. (The Siphe Principality banner) Its deep voice carris up to those on the battlements.

"OPEN THE GATES IN THE NAME OF OUR SOVEREIGN LORD JAEDON SIPHE AND THE GREAT DRAGON RACTRAFIOREZ."

Whispers race along the battlements as this strange turn of events. Below in the passage now over a score of giants have gathered.

Men and women of the Siphe Garra look towards First Ranked Nijau, Acting Lord of the Pinrcipality, for directions, uncertainty in their eyes. For a moment he looks at Daniella then Jillian and then the other First Ranked around him.

"Counsel!" he demands of those around him, then pauses looking again at Daniella and Jillain. "Both of you too. If you have something to say I'd hear it now."

Daniella looks out on the forms of the giants and especially the flag.  Her jaw clenches and for a moment there is very obvious concern in her eyes before she looks back at Nijau.  "Hold off your men, but keep them at the ready.  I don't know that we can trust them within the gates, but they are bearing the standard.  One way or another, they know where Lord Siphe is."  There is a touch of anger mixed with worry as she alludes to the fact that Lord Siphe may be missing.

"They have hailed us as allies, or at least in that they serve the same lord and dragon.  If they are holding Lord Siphe hostage in some way, we need to know.  My advice is to send out a deputation to meet them.  We need to protect the people here, and bringing that many giants into our gates would be beyond foolish."

She looks at Nijau in the eyes.  "I think you know well enough that I volunteer to ride out to meet them."

Others venture forth their own opinions, none of which is to open the gates to the host of giants that now number closer to thirty. Each and every one carrying heavy battle gear.

Below in the courtyard 4th and 5th Ranked men and women circulate the current situation to the assembled troops but to their credit the highly disciplined Siphe Garra, dotted occassionaly with Toranite allies stand fast and wait for orders at the ready.

Minutes pass as Nijau considers all those who would have words with him, occassionally he nods or replies but at all times he listens carefully. A trait that reminds a few of Jaedon Siphe himself, some of the other First Ranked nod assuredly that Jaedon has been grooming Nijau well. Finally the last voice speaks and Nijau turns to face those around him.

"It's decided. I will take four of the 3rd Rank, the best we have. Together we shall go and meet them." He glances at Daniella for a moment and warring emotions cross his face before he speaks again. "Our Sovereign Lord regards your counsel highly, it would be remiss of me not to take advantage of everything we have at our disposal, you will ride with us and your second if she wishes." The offer seems genuine even if not delivered in a tone that seems as such.

Daniella nods once and calls for her horse.  "We shouldn't keep them waiting.  I don't know how patient fire giants can be, but I'm not willing to test that tonight."

Jillian agrees with Daniella when there are discussions of what should be done.  As is characteristic for her when she is in public in Siphe Principality, she keeps her mouth shut but merely sends for her horse and mouts up.  She does however nod at Nijau when he specifically invites her along.  "Thank you."  She then looks to Daniella, takes in a deep breath and lets it out slowly and mutters to herself.

Not long after seven figures make their way out of the Eastern gate before its huge steel reinforced doors, twice the height of a man on a horse, close with a heavy thud, followed closely by the sound of the cross bars falling into place.

The ground outside the castle wall is hard and unrelenting, barren and lifeless, rocks and red soil. To the left and right rise sheer cliffs, each corner tower of the Eastern wall is built into the cliffs effectively making it impossible to access the eastern wall itself without scaling the dangerous Orsgaunt mountains or flying into the passage.

Nijau and his group move forward watched by hundreds of pairs of eyes on the battlements behind them. Eventually they pause within 30 feet of fire giant that had spoken. Even mounted the Fire Giant towered over the group.

Nijau sat straighter in his saddle and called out loudly, his words echoed upon the battlements and relayed to the soldiers in the staging grounds inside the castle.

By this stage at least two score giants filled the immediate area and it seemed more were behind them still coming up the passage.

"In the name of our Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe, I accept your greeting. I am Acting Lord, First Ranked Nijau of the Siphe Garra." Nijau's voice was strong and clear.

The giant peered down at Nijau, looking almost as if at any moment it would leap forward and crush him into the passage floor with his huge spiked mace. Instead it passed the mace and its massive shield to one of the giants beside it then knelt on one knee until its eyes drew level with Nijau's head.

"It is true what the Lord said then, his people are not soft, whimpering cowards. I am Torgar Mountainflame, Clan leader of the Burning Death, named for our Dragonlord, Ractrafiorez. War is coming with the Shadow.

Your Sovereign Lord is with the Dragon, they make plans for the war. I carry word to you of things that must be done."

Nijau glances back to those with him, not expecting this turn of events. "It took a great many of you to deliver these messages?"

Torgar slowly stood again, "We will teach your soldiers to fight the shadows, our weapons have been touched by the Dragon and will harm them far more than your insignificant ones. We bring the fire of the dragon to you so that your weapons too may penetrate the realm of shadow. Now you will take us through the Fort to a place where we can set up camp. Deliver to us one hundred servants by morning and 200 of your best soldiers. We also must have these stones placed in each corner of your kingdom."

Even as he speaks a dozen giants move up the passage bearing between them on thick ropes huge square cut blocks of stone, each one glowing a soft red colour from within. The giants strain and sweat under the weight of the eight blocks of stone. As they draw closer the group feel the heat emanating from them as well.

"You will provide 100 soldiers will travel with each group of giants to the borders and place the stones according to Ractrafiorez's wishes. They will remain there until the Sovereign Lord returns in two moons."

Nijau goes quiet, saying nothing, weighing up everything in his mind. Finally he turns to Jillian. "Tell them to open the gates." Then he moves closer to Daniella and says softly. "Everyone stays on high alert, make sure when I escort the giants in the higher Ranks know my wishes."

He then pulls away and turns his horse half way from Torgar. "Welcome to Siphe Castle, Clan Leader Torgar Mountainflame."

The progressions begins towards the castle where Jillians command has been heeded and the gates slowly swing open. Nijau rides at the giants side allowing Daniella and the others the chance to ride ahead into the Fort where over a thousand Siphe Garra stand in battle formation.

Daniella sits in her saddle beside Nijau while he speaks to the giant, and nods to him as he whispers his wishes to her.  As he escorts the giants, she rides ahead with Jillian and the others.

As the gates open, she rides in ahead of Nijau and speaks to the soldiers in a clear voice.  "The giants are to be allowed entrance into the city.  They are here to ally with us and aid us against the shadows.  You will remain on your guard, but you will not harm them unless ordered by the Acting Lord.  Any act against that order will be considered an act of treason.  For now, keep the children and those not serving with the Garra under lockdown until further notice for their own safety."

Making sure that her words are understood, she then moves aside so that Nijau can escort the fire giants inside.

"Servants of Toran, to me," she calls to her own men as she rides forward.

As they gather, she speaks to her own soldiers that are stationed with her in Fiorez City.  "Stay on your guard.  We are in a precarious position.  If they truly are here to help us, then we will accept that.  But keep your eyes and minds aware."

Marker stones. Fire to keep Shadows at bay. Old magic, possibly. But will it work? Or is there a hook?

William stood quietly, listened and waited for orders to be passed out, his eyes taking in the scene that unfold before him with a certain concentration and calm expression.

We need quite some people to get those things moved. Supplies, too. That'll pull some strength and labor and fighting force from the City itself, making it vulnerable when the time comes. Maybe.

Torgar Mountainflame, Clan leader of the Burning Death, named for their Dragonlord, Ractrafiorez was true to his word.

Within a week of their sudden and unexpected arrival the giants had established a rudimentary camp a mile from the western wall of the once great castle. Even now, twelve months after bitter fighting saw it almost completely torn down it was still a fragile shell of what it was being restored to. Siphe plans for the keep would not only eventually restore it to its former strength, but improve upon the original designs. If they could ever get it finished. Even now builders put the works at being ten years to completion.

By the end of the week the camp was in place, the 200 servants provided in hired manpower from those coming to the province seeking new lives. Never ones to waste any resource the Siphe Garra put any newcomers into work as fast as possible.

It was at this time that Torgar held council with Nijau, the other Firsts and of course the Toranite leaders at the castle, Jillian and Daniella.

He requested, most deteminedly, that battle groups of Eight and Ninth ranks be assigned to them as well as some of the Toranites who knew about the undead. These groups would travel with enough giants to transport the oddly glowing boulders to specific points around the borders of the Principality over the next fortnight.

The battlegroups would then reinforce the border outposts until further orders were received. No battle group was to leave the Principality without permission from Torgar.

Daniella was given the role of taking a smaller Field unit of sixth and seventh ranks to meet the incoming column from Hilm expected within days. While Nijau had orders from Jaedon Siphe to arrange a greeting fit for a queens daughter when it was indicated the column from Nesar was going to arrive in several weeks time.

Word spread like hot oil and she thought the reactions were just as volatile.  Some mumbled about dishonor and even evil taking orders from giants; others were afraid, as was she, although they all kept it in check.  There was no alternative.  She'd wanted to go...now she was going.  Nothing more to be done but keep her eyes and ears open, and for crying out loud learn to fight better.  Too much patrol, not enough practice.  The harsh safety of Fiorez city seemed almost cushy when she thought of where she'd been soon enough; even the bones of thieves swinging in their baskets that had formerly knotted her stomach and caused her such sweats were pleasant wind-chimes.  Siphe wind-chimes...the vastly inappropriate giggle that followed that thought drew a few strange looks.

Better pack.  Better be ready the second they said move out.  And Toran, please, look after me.

Daniella packed up her saddlebags on her horse, Victory, tightening the straps securely before looking over at the small envoy she would be taking north with her.  Her face was hard as if she was going into battle, even though this was merely a diplomatic escort.

"Our mission, gentlemen of the Sixth and Seventh, is to see that Lord Kalgarl and his daughter, and their accompanying escort arrives to Fiorez City safely.  I do not need to express to you our situation, as you are all already aware.  We will not delay once we meet with them.  I want them back here safely as swiftly as we can manage, though I expect if there are those on foot or if they have a carriage it will slow us down.  We will be the outlying perimeter and I want all eyes watching for any movement or any activity that might jeopardize our charges.  Treat this as the most important mission of your lives, soldiers."

The soldiers issued their resounding acknowledgment of the orders and, mounting their horses, they made their way to the gates to start their journey northward.

After several days of being gone, Lady Daniella and the 50 Siphe Garra of the Sixth and Seventh Rank returned, escorting Lord Hrathan Kalgarl, his daughter Lady Eliza Kalgarl, and their retinue.  The Hilmite regiment that had escorted them to the meeting point had turned back, leaving the charges solely in the hands of the Siphe Garra and the Toranite Commander.  Each of the nobles wore a different expression on their face as they entered the city once more and observed the goings on within the fortress walls.  Lord Hrathan seemed stern and displeased with Jaedon Siphe's absence, but also genuinely concerned and curious at the activity, and especially the presence of the Fire Giants. Lady Eliza was generally quiet, seeming to take in her surroundings with a soldier's eye with a touch of resignation and curiosity.  Lady Daniella, however, used to the situation in Fiorez City as she was, did not have the same awe and curiosity of her companions, but instead seemed to wear her tense, battle-hardened visage that she usually managed to reserve for times of great trial.  Her demeanor was polite and to the point as she made the customary introductions for the Kalgarls to Acting Lord, First Rank Nijau, leaving him to the arrangements for their rooms and accommodations.  She dismissed the guard as the Third Rank officers took over the escort duties and made her apologies as she bid the nobles farewell until they were certain to meet at a later time.  As she walked off, she was flanked by a Toranite Elite as well as Third Rank Kaytar as they headed up the path towards Siphe Castle.

Within days of their arrival word came in that the Nesar contingent had left Sundance and was on route to the Siphe Principality. More than likely arriving on the borders within the next week to ten days.

Hours after word arrived Daniella was summoned to the main square within the castle proper by Nijau. Upon her arrival Lord Kargarl was red faced and angrily addressing Nijau. Those who had come with him standing close behind him while his daughter stood to one side seemingly unsure what to say. Nijau stood straight his hand gripping the pommel of a well used sword by his side.

As Daniella reached them she could hear Lord Hrathans voice raised again.

"There is no way, in this backwater mass of peasant hovels that my daughter will be subjected to working, eating and sleeping with the grunts of the Ninth rank. No Way!"

Nijau's response was reserved but forceful.

"Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe made it very clear to Sir lance Stargazer that the Lady Eliza was to earn her position the same way everyone else does in the Siphe Garra, Lord Kargarl. If you have issue with that I suggest you take it up with him."

Lord Kargarl wound up to let fly again at Nijau as Daniella walked up and he stopped turning to her.

"Lady Daniella, tell this cretin that my daughter is not to be forced to work the way he is demanding."

Daniella looks between Nijau and Lord Hrathan for a moment as they both finish, then glances at Lady Eliza and the others around the square that are able to overhear Lord Hrathan's shouts.

"Lord Hrathan, I understand your objections, and I'm sure that this is not what you had expected when you made this arrangement.  However, I will tell you that everyone within the Siphe Principality works."  She holds up a hand to stifle any objection.  "Now, I would ask that you please keep your insults to a minimum while describing this place and these people as they do work very hard to defend and maintain it."  She pauses for a breath to choose her words.  "The Sovereign Lord is not here to defend or deny his choice at the moment, but perhaps the Acting Lord has not expressed the reasoning behind the desire to have Lady Eliza gain her ranks through the Siphe Garra."  She again uses a hand to try to stop any objections.

"This place is hardened by service and by battle.  Lady Eliza's involvement with the Siphe Garra would serve two purposes.  One, it would give her the opportunity to gain the respect of these people by earning ranks and rewards just as they do.  It would make her one of them.  It would also give her the opportunity to get to know the people that you would one day have her lead.  And I use that word specifically, Lord Hrathan, as the arrangement you are seeking for her is not a position to rule, but to lead.  You cannot lead troops without knowing what you have at your disposal, and you cannot lead a people without knowing who they are."

She looks between them again, and glances briefly at Lady Eliza once more before continuing.  "Now, that being said I understand that Lady Eliza has had experience with the militia for many years already, First Rank, is there any other way that she can accomplish these things, abide by the Sovereign Lord's wishes and still appease Lord Hrathan's objections at least partially in the spirit of a compromise?  Or..." she looks to Eliza, "perhaps the Lady has an opinion on the matter?"

Lady Eliza looks to Daniella for what seems like ages before she reaches up and removes the House Karlgarl clasp on her cloak and hands it to her father. Then she pulls up the sleeve on her blouse showing her left forearm where a tattoo is clearly marked.

She raises her arm to those around her, including a number of Siphe garra of different ranks drawn by the shouting.

She raises her voice and holds her arm aloft showing the tattoo.
"I am Lady Eliza Karlgarl, my father and my family is honoured in Hilm and have been for generations. From the beginning our blood has been spilled in defence of its lands. This tattoo marks me as a member of the Fifth Hilmside Regulars who have a long an honoured tradition of serving Hilm and its people. Today I stand amongst you, unsure of my place, unsure of my future, unsure of what I can offer you. But I do know this. If you will accept me, I would gladly stand amidst the Ninth, I will gladly earn my place amongst you, and I would gladly share my blood with yours. This I promise you. I desire nothing from you that I have not earnt."  Slowly she lowers her arm. All around the area several heads nod in appreciation of her words.

"Have you gone mad?" Cuts across the clearing as lord Hrathan stands in shock unable to comprehend what his daughter has just declared. "Get your things, we are leaving, this was a fools errand and you knew it from the outset."

"No father, its time for you to go. The Kargarls made a promise to Lord Alexander and to Hilm, and as you have taught me. We always do the honourable thing." With her last few words she passed over a fine shortsword to her father. "You better take this too, I will have to earn a blade here amongst these warriors."

Lord Hrathan took the sword without further comment. Nodded to both Nijau and Daniella then marched off with his own people following along behind.

Lady Eliza turned in a slow circle before facing Nijau. "My Lord, who should I report to for training?"

Nijau regarded the woman before him with a newfound respect. "Tomorrow mornign will be sufficient. Kretoth of the Fifth will induct a new group of Ninths, you can report to him."

Lady Eliza bowed then walked away stiffly from the area as Nijau crossed over to face Daniella.

"Getting nervous Commander?... in all seriousness though, can she be trusted?"

Daniella does not meet Nijau's eyes as he speaks to her.  Instead, she watches Lady Eliza with a mix of sadness and acceptance.

"There is nothing to be nervous about, First Rank, unless you are speaking about this upcoming battle of dragons," she says quietly, "and even that seems to be that we have allies in the oddest of places."  Her face hardens to the calm neutral of the military commander that she is.  "As far as Lady Eliza is concerned, Sir Lance knows enough about your people as apparently was needed to find a woman who stood the best chance of being what the Sovereign Lord would desire in a partner.  As far as I've seen so far, there is no reason not to trust her.  You'll have her serve with the Ninths and move her way up just as everyone else.  You'll see if she can be trusted just as everyone else here has earned that trust with you."

She looks at him briefly.  "Everyone, perhaps, except me."  She frowns in thought for a second.  "But she is not the only choice that the Sovereign Lord has to choose from, and you will likely need to make tougher decisions in regards to the next arrival.  Or do you intend to see the Princess of Nesar also serving with the Ninths?"

Discipline or not, word travels like wind; there are plenty of witnesses to the scene.  She isn't there to see.  She's been training with some of her brothers, true to her word to get more sword time as her bags are already packed and ready to go and all she needs is her orders.  By the descriptions, though, this one she wants to get to know.  Sounds like an iron spine and iron spines are what they need here.  Toran knows she could use a little more in hers.

Yeah, this one she wants to meet.

Acting Sovereign Lord Nijau of the First Rank regarded Daniella with a very serious expression.

"The Princess will do as she is bid as per the Soverign Lords command. She will serve with the Ninth.

Now, raise the battle groups that you used to collect Lord Karlgarl and see his lordship and his people safely to Hilm. I will expect you back within a fortnight. That is when we will ride out with a group of the giants and sweep the outer perimeters to the south. It will be time to put your Toranites to the test."

Daniella nods crisply, and then turns, sending orders in three different directions:  to Jillian Stuart to notify her of where she is going, to the stables to have the horses readied, and to a Third Rank nearby to have him get the units together to escort Lord Hrathan back to Hilm.  She then looks down at her pocket for a moment.  "And someone fetch me Lord Hrathan's wizard... I need to send word that he will be arriving so they can prepare as well."  She marches off deeper into the castle away from the square, never once looking back to where Lady Eliza left.

Daniella and the Siphe Garra manage to travel northward to escort Lord Hrathan back to Hilm, meeting the Hilmite soldiers and passing over the charges with a relatively uneventful journey.

When they return, they are stopped by the border asking for identifications.  Daniella is recognized soon enough as are the other members of the Siphe Garra, and they are allowed entry.  Daniella casts an uneasy and suspicious look up at the large mounds that tower even over a tall man with the large stones that glow with an eerie red at the edge of the boundary of the lands.

She frowns and motions the soldiers to follow her as they picked up the pace to make it the rest of the way back to Fieroz City.  As they arrive, the place is abuzz with activity.  It doesn't take long before the information is gathered to know that the column from Nesar has reached the southern borders.

They will arrive on the morrow.

At the same time that Daniella returns, word reaches her that Lady Eliza was injured during a training exercise and was currently being attended to in the Medical building. A converted storehouse within the castle walls.

Observers of the incident, including those Toranites in the Ninth keeping an eye on her noted that since her arrival in the Ninth the Lady had pushed herself to the point of exhaustion every day in order to prove to the others she was worthy of being in the Siphe Garra, this finally came to a halt when she leapt across a widening gap during a bridge crossing when no one else would and fell after missing the other side. Reports back to the Ninth were that she had two broken legs and a broken wrist. She has been healed but has been ordered to take a few days before rejoining her battlegroup of Ninths.

The day before the arrival of the Princess of Nesar sees the Fort a flurry of activity. First rank Nijau insists that all flags and accoutrements that the Siphe Garra possess are on display. He wants to ensure the Princess of Nesar is fully aware of where she is coming too and who is in command there. So too representatives of each Rank are called forward to be on display when the princess arrives in all their parade gear. The best battlegroups from each Rank will be on parade for her arrival.

As day passes into night word arrives by runner from the sothern outposts that the Nesar column is now camped inside the Principality lands and expect to arrive at the castle by midafternoon.

As the day creeps towards the time there is a last bustle of activity in readying the fort for the Princess' arrival. Even those in the city itself have come out and formed an avenue to the Castles main southern gate, itself still in the process of being restored after the devastation of the war.

Riders gallop along the avenue and into the castle proper where Battlegroups from the Fourth to the Ninth rank stand in perfect formations, their battle and group standards snapping in the light breeze. In the centre of them is a raised platform upon which the First to Third rank representatives stand in full uniforms. To one side is Lady Daniella and Lady Jillian with some of their senior staffers one who held a large banner of Toran proudly, despite Daniella being told not to carry any Toranite banners to the day by Nijau.

Relative quite settles over the large courtyard inside the castle. The large area cleared of all debris, rubble and left over buildings after the Garra took it over.

From outside loud cheers can be heard in the distance from the city folks who turned out to be part of the pomp and circumstance. As Nijau pointed out earlier it wouldnt matter if Molvaren himself walked towards the city the common folk just seemed to enjoy a celebration.

As they stood and waited the cheers grew louder as the Nesar column got closer to their destination and soon the clopping of horses on the stone laid road outside the castle became distinct and clear.

Acting Sovereign Lord, First Rank Nijau's voice suddenly echoed around the castle.

"BATTLEGROUPS! TEN, SHUN! SOUND THE CALL!" The two thousand gathered Siphe Garra stamped boots together as one and trumpeters one ach corner of the Castle blasted several short and sharp notes into the air.

As the last note faded the first of the Heavy Lancers of the Dark Guards rode into the castle. By two's they came, their powerful warhorses wearing darkened leather barding and red steel bridles, bits and accoutrements. Their own armour resembling the same colours of their mounts. Banners snapped on lances held high, Nesar and the Dark Guards including the Royal House of Nesar.
As they entered the wide space of the courtyard they rode directly towards the raised platform then parted and moved to form a single line before First Rank Nijau.

Nijau counted the Dark Guards as they kept coming, pair after pair. After the fifteenth pair an elaborate carriage pulled by a six black horses entered the castle. The reign handler moved the carriage to a position before the raised platform so the carriage was side on, the door facing the platform. Two stepmen at the back quickly leapt off, one placed a roll of red carpet outside the door the other stood on the door step and faced Nijau, a long black rod in his hand.

Still more Dark Guards entered, Nijau counted another five pairs then frowned. There should have been more. Behind the last guards came several more wagons, servants and retainers for the Princess no doubt.

One of the last pair of guards rode over to put his horse between the platform and the carriage. He removed his helm which bore a large red feather from some exotic animal. He was a man in his middle ages with a long scar pulling the right side of his face down. He gazed up at those gathered at the platform and sneered openly at the sight of the Toranite flag before speaking with a very strong accent.

"First Rank Nijau, I am Phalanx General Ni'tok, Sworn Soulguard of Princess Shey'kar. Know that if any harm comes to the princess within your lands, I will personally kill you and anyone else involved."

Several looks were exchanged amongst those on the platform. To Nijau's credit he did not appear to react beyond a tightening of his fists by his side then speaking in a controlled voice.

"I am glad you have made your intentions quite clear General. What you must now realise is that you are on Siphe sovereign land and no longer in Nesar or Hilm. We are an independant nation and you would do well to be more careful with your threats."

The General snorted but glanced about him as if suddenly noticing the display of up to two thousand Siphe Garra in full parade battle gear and his mood sombered somewhat.

Nijau spoke again, "I was expecting more men to arrive with you General."

Ni'tok looked back at Nijau and nodded slightly, "We were attacked by shadows after leaving Sundance, I lost six men during the ambush and another four not long after who were scouting."

Nijau frowned slightly, "You have heard what is going on, you would have seen the stone on your way in."

The general nodded, "Bloody Dragons, need to be put down, the lot of them. We are here to protect the princess, with our lives if necessary. I expect the same from your people."

Nijau nodded, "We do not intend to let anything happen to the Princess General, an agreement was made and the Siphe Garra honour their agreements."

The General dismounted quickly and gave his reign to another rider nearby who led his horse away.

'I'm here to ensure you do." With that the general strode to the elaborate carriage and dropped to his knees beside the red carpet. At that motion the Stepman with the black staff stepped onto the carpet then turned and opened the door to the carriage. The end of his staff glowed softly and his voice was magnified.

"The Princess Shey'kar, of the Royal House of Maillard, the House of Nesar, Duchess of the northern cities."

With that he stepped back and raised a black gloved hand. Second later a slender arm reached out, braided platinum wires warpped around the wrist and extended up the arm where a scarlet coloured sleeve began. A thick gold armband studded with rubies could be seen as well. Then, out of the shadows of the wagon a young girl, dressed like a young woman in a scarlet red dress. Both arms were adorned with the platinum braided wires and thick gold armbands studded in rubies. Her narrow waist was shown off by a thickgold and black cloth belt with sashes of pure silver hanging off it at regular intervals. A great black onyx rested in the centre of the belt.

Her hair was tied back by a silver and gold tiara of exquisite workmanship and about her neck hung another huge ruby that seemed to glow with its own inner light. Apart from the platinum braids around her wrist up to her elbow her fingers were bare.

She stepped down from the carriage lightly then let go the hand that helped her and walked to her general cupping his face in her hands. Then, in front of everybody she leaned down and kissed him on the lips before telling him to stand. She then turned to look up at those on the platform and spoke. Her voice haughty.
"General, why am I down here and they are up there? Do they not know who I am?"

Even as she spoke Nijau was moving, he stepped down the stairs in front of the princess and walked towards her bowing deeply upon reaching her. "Princess Shey'kar, welcome to the Siphe Principality. I am First Rank Nijau, acting Sovereign lord."

"General, where is my future husband? I do not see him here?" The Princess ignored Nijau completely.

The General looked at Nijau who responded. "The Sovereign lord is away on business Princess, preparing for the war."

The princess finally looked at Nijau and spoke directly to him, it appeared to those nearby she shivered in delight. "War, that does sound exciting, it seems I have arrived at the right time."

Nijau decided to get straight to the heart of the matter, "Princess, it is the Sovereign Lords wishes that you join the ranks of the Ninth and begin training with the Siphe Garra."

The Princess laughed lightly, "it's his wish is it? Well, that is not unexpected. Mother did warn me he can be a stickler for rules. Very well Nijau, I can play the good girl for a while."

Nijau had to gather himself for a moment, he had been prepared for a fight , an argument at the least over his Lords wishes, but it didnt eventuate.

The next day word reached Nijau as he spoke to Daniella about the day prior that two Ninth had been killed by General Ni'tok for touching the Princess during weapons drills. When they went to investigate it was discovered that the Princess had killed them herself during weapons training and the General had offered to kill anyone else who tried to harm her for 'defending' herself.

Daniella's expression was dark.  "How many more are going to die to appease this spoiled child of a Corathite Queen, First Rank?  They put all here in danger by their very presence.  If she should trip or stub her toe on a rock, are they going to kill the closest man, woman, and child?  Will they kill you for it?"  The agitation and anger and frustration over the situation is apparent on the Lady Commander's face as she paces, an obvious fury building in her eyes.  "I am not accustomed to pandering to Corath's minions, Nijau, nor do I intend to start, and these lands are currently occupied by a growing evil it seems.  These stones at your borders are tainted with it, as are these giants, and now the Nesarians.  I am not going to see Lord Siphe return just see that in his absence his lands have been overrun by evil!"

"I dont like it any more than you Commander. It's all very well to rant and rave about what makes you feel uncomfortable, far better to spend that energy on finding a solution to the problem. I am very tempted to order a trial for the murder, we all know she is guilty. Tell me Commander, would you want to hang the sixteen year old daughter of the Queen of Nesar?

As it stands she is confined to quarters along with that General of hers until I decide what to do with her."

Daniella runs a hand through her hair.  "If all circumstances were equal, yes, I would try her for her crimes, but we both know that they are not, and anything that is done to the princess will put this land in greater risk of the queen.  She is young, and I would prefer that there was some way to pry her away from the influences that she has grown up with, but I'm not sure if that is even possible."  She sighs and looks out at some distant point.  "I really hate politics sometimes.  It may be best to send some sort of charges to Queen Maillard, but were I in your position, I would consider all of your options."  Daniella looks again at Nijau.  "The only thing that we can do at this particular time is what you're doing by keeping her confined while you make your decision.  Limit the danger she can put others in for now.  We have the southern attack to worry about, and it seems we may have to deploy our troops to see about that issue, hopefully without having to worry about the situation here while we are gone."

She looks at Nijau again.  "I know that you are doing the best you can, and in truth you are doing things right, but Lord Siphe has to return soon to straighten out this mess with the ladies before things get worse.  I'm going to speak with Lady Eliza.  You know how to find me if you need my help."

Quite literally a day later and yet two weeks prior to the return of Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe runners arrive from the southern borders.

Within minutes of their report to First Rank Nijau messengers are sent to Commander Daniella's quarters summoning her and Jillian to an urgent meeting.

Upon entering the command room of the main tower slowly being rebuilt inside the Castle walls Nijau and the rest of the council are present. he looks up at Daniella's arrival.

"Word has arrived of movement beyond the southern border. A great mist has arisen over a huge area of the roughlands. Whatever it is, its not natural, scouts report they have seen things moving in the mists.  I have sent word to Torgar who's currently at the eastern border but we are not going to wait for him. I know you have your own second but you will be commanding Siphe garra so you will take Third Rank Kaytar with you as your second in this matter. I am placing you in charge of the Third, Eight and twelth battlegroups of Ninth. Those are the ones that contain your Toranites.

Go south as soon as they are assembled and find out whats going on out there. This could be a pre-emptive strike or a test of our new defences."

*Lance stands with grim expression standing over the wall of the castle, one common sight on the last months, the man can be alone to think and able to hear his most inner thoughts, his concience on turmoil for the life he has now and the choices and sacrifices he had to do, And now this. ..*

- Commander , your horse is ready -

*The man looks down to the young squire, one of the minor noble houses lasts sons trying to earn a place on Hilm military, then nods*

Thank you, *he pass a scroll case to the squire *  Give this to captains on our detachment, I need the scouts to depart as soon as able, we'll be follow short after

*The young adult bow his head and taking the scroll case ran back, Lance turned his gaze towards the horizon, smiling at the irony, another war to figth and the first one was not even done, and on the way to Sundance.... again. Life spin around the loose ends of one life it seems.. what would be on the field, Only Toran knows, but no matter what that is, this continent only counted on the protectorate ..... again, that is what it was formed and so the duty has to be fulfiled.

*The man start to move down the stairs, giving a last sight to the healer's tent, a small smile touched his lips as he reached to his faithfull steed and mount moving to the front of the column that was going to depart *

On a ridge an undisclosed distance north of Sundance two Hilm scouts lie still observing the thick flowing mists that now cover much of the lands to the north that they can see rising to a height of at least a hundred feet.

The mists roil and twist in a manner suggestive of silvery silken sheets hanging in a wind but there is also something ominous in their intensity, ominous in the darker folds within the mist, and then there are the odd shapes, as if something presses against the edges of the mist trying to find a way out. Several times both of the scouts have thought they saw something more substantial in the midst and both times by the time they blinked and really looked they were gone.

As dusk began to slowly give way to night a chill coldness seeped towards the scouts position from the mist and then, suddenly, deeper into the thick layers a large shape moved, pushing the mist up and up, higher than the layers around it and slowly coalesced into a frightening apparition.

Both scouts lay rooted to the spot in abject terror as a creatures shape appeared in the mist, or was it the mist itself? Neither man could tell. To them it appeared as if a creature draped in Mist rose high above the landscape but in the backs of their minds it seemed the creature was the mist as well, but no one would believe them if they said that, or so they believed.

Mist flowed from the creature as it ascended but never dissipated from it and slowly it unfurled its wings to full extension, darkness and shadow draped it like clothing as it flew high then turned slowly and descended once more into the thick layer coating the Roughlands.

Both scouts drew back white faced and looked at each other to confirm what they had seen. Neither spoke, their hearts hammering in their chests until one, slightly braver than the other ventured to speak the dreaded truth.

"The shadow dragon himself."

*South of Briardusk there is movement.  At a distance it is a small group tightly bound and moving at a steady pace.  Some flags are up and there are a few horses in the front.  Moving closer the chanting can be heard.  It is distinctly dwarven war chants.  They are songs of battle and retorical shouts in chorus.  This is a dwarven war party.  This is the Voraxian contingent.

They are not horses, but Warponies up front.  The flags are of the Order of the Valorous Axe, the Red Axe Warriors and Vorax.  Three ride the Warponies up front in silver plate with red adornments.  The other warriors follow on foot and wear silver armor with red as well, but their armor is more warn and rough.  All are wielding great axes, battle axes or dwarven war axes.  The warriors count 50.  One of paladins on ponyback wears a mithril axe pendant around his neck, the sign of the Valorous Axe Champion.

One of the other paladins turns to talk to Griff.*

Captain Axenfeldya:  Aye Major Griff, Ye men are ready n prepared.
Griff:  Aye so they are n they sound confident *looks back at the kin following*
Captain Axenfeldya:  Aye Major, ye feel it?
Griff:  Aye feel it, been feel'n it since weh got in des lands.  The evil is unmistakeable and thick.
Captain Axenfeldya:  Aye.
Griff:  Inform deh battle group of dis, n tah beh ready fer deaders, shadows, n all deh basserds a dat loike.
Captain Axenfeldya:  Aye Major, but what ov dis mist dat has started tah form?
Griff:  *turns to look at the captain* Deh mist comes from deh evilness.  We bring deh holy moight n glory of deh Eternally Vigilant.  *Griff looks back at the singing dwarves and smiles*  Vorax is wit us brother, n the loight of deh Battle Fatha will shoine thru dis mist so dat our axes beh true.
Captain Axenfeldya:  Aye Major.  Praise Vorax!
Griff:  Aye Praise Vorax brotha.  Let's keep dis trek, n maybe weh meet up wit deh group outa Hilm.  If not, den weh nay wait'n, n weh take des bassards ourselves.

*Griff picks up where the songs and chants are and begins to sing in unision with the dwarven war chorus.  He grips Passion's mane and gives it a tug and the pony looks back slightly at Griff n a knowing look*

In Sundance, the city of Hilm that is taking a long time to get moving after the war, people begin having strange dreams at night. Children awaken from nightmares, adults prefer not to speak of what they see during the night.

All the while the huge bank of Mist covers the roughlands north of Sundance and south of the Siphe Principality, an ominous shadow.

Word spreads quickly of the separate engagements against the strange Mist overriding the Roughlands of Hilm.

In the north grim battlegroups of Siphe Garra Ninth establish camps inside their lands where the dead and wounded can be properly cared for. The name and event on everyones lips being the fighting skills and bravery shown by Argali and the holy power possessed by Lady Daniella Stormhaven who, as the tales grow, almost singlehandedly held at bay all the shadows of the Pits with her glowing sword and holy Ankh of Toran. Truly a light in the darkness.

So too words of honour and respect are given for those many Siphe Garra and their Toranite allies who bravely fought the shadows of the mist.

Meanwhile, in the south, columns of Hilmite infantry and Toranite cavalry bear the bodies and wounded of their own encounter with the strange mist.

Sir Lance, having been caught up in Sundance handed over authority of the force to Captain Vrebel who led them north along with significant adventurer and mercenary support. On their way Voraxians led by Major Griff Silversand joined them.

But what they found was certainly not what they expected and after several engagements with creatures out of the mist they were set upon also by a shadowy dragon form. The battle raged for hours until night saw the combined forces close to rout. That was when Major Griff Silversand carried forth with a rousing speech sending what remained of his Red Axes against the dragon in a last ditch act of desperation. Boyed by the dwarves sacrifice and charge to glory Captain Vrebel rallied those still able to hold a weapon and joined the brave dwarves. At the end of the day it was Captain Vrebels blade that took down the dragon before its essence drifted back to the mist once more.

Once having returned to the base camp and enjoying a small and well-needed break, William approaches Hector and Marion quietly, his hands smelling of an alcohol-herb mixture used by healers to stop spreading wound infections from one patient to the next. He holds a small piece of parchment out to Hector.
"The things I remember," he says calmly, "I suppose it will be invaluable to write down what we have seen, felt and experienced during the battle and how we fought against it. Do you think you can do the writing? I can take your shift, and collect some more statements of others. It should be possible to get more information on this kind of corruption once we are out of here. And even if not, our experiences can be passed on to others, and to Hilm."

The expression in his eyes reinforced the expression, that while his body is battle-weary and still struggling with the exhaustion and trauma, his mind is calm, at ease and focused on the next tasks.

"If you think this has any merit, hand it over to the Commander. I'll be with the wounded and dying." He turns to leave, and before exiting the tent, he turns around and looks at each one of them, carefully studying their faces.
"Let's get this done as soon as possible. Knowledge is power, especially against things like that. I hope the Shining Hand or the libraries can turn up anything that could help us. Nothing ever shall be in vain, so Toran ordains. We fought well. Get some rest, I will be doing your tasks for a while."

Then he leaves the tent and returns to his duties, doing what he can until they either force him to rest or he falls asleep curled up somewhere, dreaming of the Mist and the fight and of Lyn. Please Toran, keep her safe, please, let her be alright...

"I want notes. Observation, on what you two saw, experienced and so on while you held the mist at bay. I would do it myself, Marion, but I was not close to the action all the time and indisposed for some time."

He looks straight at her.

"I would do it myself, but I was not there all the time. It was not my idea. I did not witness everything. So maybe you and Hector could figure out some sort of collection of notes on your observations and such. If you don't want to, and think that there are better things to do, then do those things instead. You two could use some time off, I suppose. And unless somebody can convince me that this is no new enemy and we know all that we need to fight it already, I'd like to collect notes and such.

And you don't need to have Raelyn around to write...I'm confident you will do quite fine. You learned fighting with a blade and a shield, too, and are quite confident with it."

He smiles.

Her stride toward the healing tents breaks and she returns his gaze.  "Will, you want notes, you take 'em.  I'll tell you everything I saw but it'll take me hours sussin' out the letters and we ain't got hours to sit around.  Take notes from the soldiers can talk too, mebbe talkin'll help them that came out all wide-eyed and shakin'.

"And uh, Will..."  Pointedly.  "If anyone needs restin', it's you.  I don't stop movin' till the Commander orders me to stop movin' and we got a lotta wounded.  Drag out whatever writin' stuff you got and I'll talk while I bandage."

And there we go again. He could feel his care and emotions falter, quickly retreat, then finally wither away and die once more. Like somebody pulling away a blindfold from his eyes. Would him doing some writing in the tent do any good? Give them a feeling that their pain had a purpose after all?

"Let's forget that, then. I'll see what I have time for." He said and entered the tent.

For the next few days the three battlegroups of Ninth, their numbers reduced due to the injured and dead being dispatched back to Siphe Castle, worked to build fortifications along a stretch of group surrounding the faintly glowing red boulders of the fire giants. During the day their glow was barely evident but at night they bathed a large area in a soft dull red glow.

The battle groups worked quickly and effectively during this time, rotating through shifts in work details and sentry duties. Several of the leaders made their way back and forth between the border post and the main castle in that time for various reasons and duties to fulfill.

Finally, after a week two more battlegroups arrived to relieve the initial ones who marched back to the Castle for debriefing. A day after their arrival they were summoned to the main parade ground inside the castle in full uniform. Several of the Ninth were honoured with bravery awards for their deeds during the battle and a number promoted.

Amidst the promotions several of the Toranites serving in the Garra ranks were called forth and honoured as well with both Bravery medals and promotions to the Eighth battlegroups.

Marion MacMurray
William Leox
Hector Bael

Once the ceremony was finished and those promoted reassigned the place returned to business as usual. Everyone eager for the impending return of their Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe within the next few days.

Sitting to the side, Gunther grumbles, 'Who was da first one to charge dat dragon.  When it came out of da mist and attacked dose soldiers, everyone stood back, cept for Gunther.  Now peoples get medals and promotions and ceremonies.  Ceptin fer Gunther.  Gunther not even get paid.  Paid would be nice.  Gunther not need no medals.'

Continually grumbling to himself, Gunther proceeds to scour his armor of any defects and rust spots.

A day after the ceremonies take place Acting Sovereign Nijau releases Princess Shay'kar from house arrest along with her General Ni'tok. The members of the Dark Guard who were to remain in the vicinity of the Princess for four years had been housed in a section of the city that had been cordoned off to provide them with some margin of independence.

Princess Shay'kar had returned to her training under her Generals watchful eye and within hours there were problems again with the General mocking the drills and routines the Princess was expected to undertake.

By late afternoon again Nijau and other ranked officers wer summoned to the battelgroups drill area where already a large crowd had gathered. Most of the battlgroup was there along with off duty members of several other groups.

Ninth members stapped back to allow Nijau and his officers, including Lady Daniella Stormhaven and Lady Jillian, a path to the edge of the arena.

In the arena General Ni'tok had a young ninth on his knees, pinned with a long staff. His face was battered and bloody and one arm hung limpy by his side. Nearby the Princess, paced back and forth obviously delighting in the spectacle she was creating. Even as the group stopped at the edge of the arena, a Fourth Rank overseeing the training session was demanding the general release the man, to no avail.

Silence decended over the area and both the general and the princess looked over at Nijau, the Generals face gleaming with obscene joy at the conflict he was causing. The Princess seemed pretty pleased with herself as well.

Nijau took in the scene camly then spoke loudly. "It seems there is only one way to do this General, Princess." He loosened his sword belt and handed it to Lady Daniella beside him. Next he cleared the low fence in a simple movement and strode towards the General who didnt seem sure what was going on. Nijau struck hard and fast, a heel to the Generals knee, the edge of one hand to his elbow holding the staff, another just below his armpit. The general roared in angry pain as his numb arm dropped the staff pinning the ninth and he reached for his sword with his off hand. Nijau struck again in a quick succession of blows, ribs, neck, chin, then around and knee, solar plexus, abdoman.

Within seconds the General was down moaning on the group trying to hold several areas at once. There was a loud shreik and Nijau grunted as the princess launched her own attack on his back. Several blows struck hard before Nijau rolled away and came to his feet and they faced off against each other.

The crowd barely spoke as they watched the spectacle before them. Nijau came in again low and fast, feet and fists moving quickly, the Princess parried, spun, ducked low and backflipped to escape the worst of it. Nijau drove in again, most of his blows were deflected or missed as the smaller faster princess danced and evaded his blows.

For several moments they traded blows, manouvered and tried to gain advantage over each other until finally Nijau caught the princess a glancing blow against her head which sent her reeling. He lunged forward and hit her hard on the chin, her head snapped back and she collapsed on the floor of the arena.

Nijau staggered breathing in deeply then wiped blood from his face from several blows the princess landed. He walked over to the edge of the arena and demanded his sword then walked back to the general and placed it against his neck.

"If you ever threaten one of my people again..." He stood and removed the blade then looked at the Fourth who stood there silently. "See that the general and the Princess are tended to and get back to training, any more problems, let me know."

Daniella watched silently while Nijau dealt with the situation, her features stern and her brow furrowed.  After Nijau walked away from the fight and retrieved his sword once more, she glanced at him only briefly as he strode past her, but those who know her could see that Nijau had somehow managed to gain more of her respect.  She stood a few moments longer watching the scene, then whispered quietly to one of the Siphe Garra officers nearby.  "Watch them closely in case they decide to enact some sort of retribution on the Acting Sovereign.  We don't need them to start a full fledged war within the city."

*Upon reading the report in the main camp, Lance frowns upon the news, he is holding a blueish gem on his hand that holds some pale light, as if awaiting something, this has been a common sight for the commander in the last months, he finally puts the gem back into his belt pouch, then start to move out *

- And so the enemy had shown itself -

*Lance moves out among his men, looking at them with a mixture of feelings, brave men Hilm indeed has, and again the politic part of his duties had caught with him, he looks at the men again with a proud look on them. This people are true heroes his thoughts drive him on, he looks upon the wounded and talking alongside the people, then finally he moves out of the encampment to greet the Brave Voraxians that fought alongside his men against the mist and the foes that them hide *

*Spotting Gunther he blinks a bit noticing the unfamiliar sight among the people figthing, he shakes his head a bit and notices the giant of a man and take some mental notes to himself, then moving towards the Voraxian's column he is seen speaking with the dwarves, showing his support and gratitude, if some of them want to know about the threat, he'll be willing to answer their questions.*

*Vrebel rides by the administrative tent in Sundance and jerks on the reins halting his horse.  He removes his helm revealing a bruised and bloodied face which appears pale in the dim light left in the day.  He turns to the tent and signals for one of the gaurds to come over after whiping his face.

"If the high commander aint too busy I'd like to see him."

*He dismounts his horse slowly a groan from his weary horse.  He makes his way to the commanders tent offering a tired salute to the gaurd out front.  Inside he begins to give the battle report to Lance or his advisor if Lance is elsewhere.*

"Mist was everywhere North of Sundance.  We encountered a force of Voraxians along the way lead by Griff Silversand.  You've heard most of the reports namely about loosin' 91 brave souls out of yer force of 200 but I'd like to give you my take..."

"The mist rolls and fluxuates and appears alive inside.  The creatures seems to get healin from it somehow.  We encounterd shadow creatures of various forms from beholders ta humanoid type critters, Not to mention a shadow dragon."

"We encountered unique problems in the battle once the mist descended.  Our men seemed confused while fightin' with some even attacking eachother.  Others just ran off crying like babies.  In future encounters with the mist I suggest our minds be protected.  Also their keen on fightin in the dark so true seein' or utlravision would also be advised.  We'll need priests as well to offer blessins against the drain'n magics."

"Without the bravery of yer men and the battle prowess of Griff's Voraxians that dragon would have killed many more.  Also I'd like to put in a good word fer the others who spilled blood namely Jil, Sehky and Fehriel fer scoutin' and providin' cover fire, Kurn and Gunther fer takin' point without blinkin an eye, and Raelyn, she deserves extra praise for her healin' and fallin' twice in battle but kept goin'."

"Seems the mist dont like the positive energies comin from yer Clerics and the Voraxians.  You might try that to keep the mist contained."

"Oh and by the way if that big giant Gunther keeps up about not bein payed send him to my tent I got some extra coin if he wants a soldiers wage."

*He takes a swig from his canteen*

"The gods only knows what lies deeper in that stuff."

*Lance nods listening to Vrebel's report, as he eventually returns to his tent *

And must say that you did a most excelent work i've heard as well, My deepest thanks for taking this task in the name of Hilm, your report is welcomed and apreciated.

*Lance moves towards the map on his table, showing several points on it and covering an area that resembles what the mist covered *

We are indeed facing something that comes from a lower frequency acording to the schollars, Captain, And yes, the positive energy holds a special advantage we hold, sadly its a limited resourse against the size of this threat.

I am still awaiting for the reasons this war is comming, too much mystery is involved on this one, and we may have been caught in the middle of a conflict beetwen dragons. I can't speak more till I got this information confirmed by my sources.

*he nods taking the notes of the names and the report, smiling to Vrebel * I take that you would only give praise to all of them who came alongside you, and yes to fight on this battle was not an easy task *his features darkens a bit*  And yet the true heroes are those who fell on defense of their duty here, we'll burn a pyre and will offer a service in their honor if you are still around, you are most welcome to stay.

This is a war that is just starting, just when we are in the middle of other, But if we stand together we'll prosper, please take care to express to the people who was serving under you my congratulations , I will speak with them a bit later.

*Lance looks upon him just before leaving* Feel free to deal with that Gunther however you see fit, I may have some words for him later if he is still around, Its indeed a strange sight upon this lands.

*finally he asks*  Is Griff still among his Brothers? or...

*he leaves the sentense open awaiting for a reply*

Dragon feud ya say?

He shakes his head his frustration growing as he gazes down at the map that Lance has layed out.

I've heard the rumors as well but almost didnt want to believe them.  We've already got a full plate as it is with the threat still loomin' inside Kuhl.  I wonder what deals Siphe has made to cause all this.

He crackes the nuckles in his hand making a fist

We saw another of those mist dragons swoop north of us.  I hope Daniella's forces faired well.

Oh and yeah I'll be around fer the pyre most likely.  Seems I'm here for the duration who knows at this rate I might die of old age out on that blasted battle field.  Those men and women deserve more but its the least we can do fer em.

I heard Griff ordering his men to make camp as we were gettin close ta Sundance.  Seems he had some wounded that were to ill to travel and somethin bout keepin an eye on the mist.

There is a sudden appearance of a hooded man dressed in muted blue and other dark colors within the outer walls of Hilm Castle.  Based on his pace and posture, he has arrived with a specific purpose.  While not impolite should anyone take notice and greet him, he does not pause for conversation as he heads rather determinedly toward the inner keep.

Though fallen twice and met the soul mother once in her attempts to protect and heal those she could, her own thoughts are of taking care of the wounded, with the other healers that are near the camp, with what supplies they have on hand.

After Connor's arrival in Fieroz City, Daniella calls off the guards as quickly as she can once she realizes who it is.  She is seen discussing something with Connor for a few moments before she gives some orders and notifies that she is leaving with Connor for a short while, but will return before the day is out.

After stepping through the portal Connor creates at Hilm, she heads with him towards the inner keep of Hilm Castle, her face impassive.

An hour after Daniella was portalled away by the legendary Al'nothist Connor several scouts raced into the castle causing a flurry of activity as their reports were heard and passed up through the chain of command.

Within 20 mins of their report being given to their superiors Acting Sovereign Lord Nijau was in council with the rest of the Firsts high in the operations room of the main tower of Siphe Castle. Deep frowns met his relaying of the report from the scouts. Finally the oldest man present, Saran'gort of the First Rank spoke up.

"So this is how it ends? I have fought most of my life in wars across this land and beyond. We finally find a place to settle and this is how it will end?"

Nijau turns his back on those seated on the table and moves to a slitted window. Gazing through the narrow stone opening at the open courtyard of the castle below, beyond to the wall still in the stages of being rebuild and out to where newly ploughed lands showed how the people of the Siphe Garra had begun to try and make a living from the hard unyeilding ground around the castle. For a moment he felt what it was like for his Lord, Jaedon Siphe, every day after they had carved out the niche for themselves . The land around them was almost as hard and unyeilding as the people who had seized it. Pride swelled in his chest and he turned back to the few gathered.

"We came to this place at the head of an army of malformed creatures and monsters, we fought with blood, tooth and nail for every inch of ground. We lost brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, the list goes on. And in the end, it was our flag that rose above the rubble and stood out. The monsters gone, our path of retreat lost to us. We chose this path, every man and woman here in this nation chose to join Lord Jaedon when he asked them too. All around us are enemies, though there are signs that some...just might be our friends or at least work with us to help establish what we have started." He pauses and nods at Jillian standing near the doorway where he told her to stay when he invited her. She could listen and report to Daniella but could not speak amongst the Firsts.

Saran'gort shifted in his seat slowly then spoke again, "Our Lord has been gone for nigh on three weeks, we have giants on our borders with some foul magics, we have snakes within our city, we have Hilm breathing down our necks just waiting for us to fail, we have a mist filled with shadows waiting to assail us and now this...I cant help wondering if this is to be our fate for our crimes of the past."

Nijau nodded slowly, "I recognise your words honoured First but when have the Siphe Garra been frightened by humanoids before, even in numbers they are no match for our fighting skills."

"Maybe not alone, Acting Sovereign, but we are talking thousands of them."

Nijau crossed to the table again and sank into his chair. "Then we need to make sure our plans are well made."

Within the hour orders were going out to all the Ranks along with the news that the scouts had returned with. The Orsgaunt mountains had come alive.

It seemed that whatever creature ruled the mists to the south, had called to account many of the humanoid clans inhabiting the southern regions of the orsgaunt Mountains. Already at the base of the mountains a day from the borders of the Siphe Principality several thousand kobolds, orcs, goblins, ogres and even some giants had begun assembling under one banner. A grey dragon on a field of black.

Battle companies made up of battlegroups of Fifth through Ninth ranks were given orders to begin drills and intensive training for operations against the humanoids and the shadow creatures alike.

Word quickly spread through the city seeing a number of people who came to the place seeking a new start amongst the Siphe Garra deciding to return to Briardusk of Hilm where they came from initially. The Siphe Garra who lived their however, men, women and children, their faces grim and resigned, prepared to defend their new land to the last of them if necessary.

Amidst the preparations people began to ask...just where was the Sovereign Lord in their hour of need!

Another few hours later Hilm scouts returned to Sundance in a similar fashion reporting directly to Sir lance on the sudden appearance to the north east at the base of the mountains of a huge horde of creatures bearing a banner of a grey dragon on a black background.

She was supposed to enjoy the ceremony and she had, sort of.  It sounded quiet, strained, each word of congratulations heavy with loss and uncertainty and filtered through her guilt.  So many of those honored had actually fought; she had not.  Her sword work and defense was still lacking.  On the field you have to make fast decisions and hers was not to throw her life away in a futile effort but instead to throw potions and grab the hands of the wounded trying to get out of the mist; to help her brothers and sisters.  But she was one of Toran's paladins and there was a part of her, the little girl who grew up listening to her uncle's wild stories, that thought she should do more, that she should be standing there in a blaze of His light fighting back the shadows to protect those whose paths didn't put swords in their hands.  Like Commander Stormhaven.  Just like that - Daniella's sword had cleaved the shadows and been the beacon leading the ninth across.  Someday, maybe...

Glancing around as she headed back to her new group she thought of how Hector had kept the breach open and how Will had gone down fighting, of Marin - where was he, anyway? - and finally of Rae.  Right then in her funk she remembered her friend's voice, clear and unaccented, helping her learn a Conduct.  It was almost as if Rae was whispering in her ear.

"For valor there is restraint, for conviction there is humility, for honorable combat there is sacrifice.  Remember who grants you strength, the ability to heal, and protect.  Remember that while he is a god, he was a man.  A man who did not stand on a pedestal. A man who did not take for granted others and who did not use his strength to put others under his heel but rather assisted and protected.  Every day, walk in his humble steps."

...Humility.

Yeah, okay Toran, I hear ya.  She grinned, her step lightened.  Funny that - always when she felt down, there was that little something.  So, if she wanted to protect, Humility and...well, practice, right now.  They'd be back on patrol soon, maybe another assignment, she needed a sparring partner - who?

Oh yeah.  Oh, yeah - something she'd meant to do, she'd probably get her butt kicked but it'd be worth it.  No time like the present.  She veered from the Eighth tents toward her old Ninth, nodding and cracking some jokes as she passed those she knew.

"Hey.  Is Ninth Karlgarl outta medical yet?  Where can I find her?"

A hulking metal creature stands statue-still on a small bluff. The Roughland sun radiates back its heat from the creature's dull gray skin. This is not one of the old, malfunctioning constructs that wander parts of the Roughlands. It is new, unblemished, and only on Layonara for a short time. Perched on the construct's shoulder is the masked mercenary. His gaze is toward the mountains to the east, then turns toward the mists in the west.

"Well, well, Sparky." He pats the construct on the head. "I suppose it's time to go visit a dragon... or two. You know, I'm really not cut out for this emissary business. You'd think the kingdoms of the world would already have paid someone to be the 'dragon emissary'. Maybe they couldn't find anyone crazy enough to do it..... Oh, wait, I'm going on my own behalf, not the rest of the world's, so I suppose I'm no emissary after all. What? Don't look at me like that."

Steel turns his eyes from west to east and back again. "Decisions, decisions. If only I knew what dragons like to drink..."

*Lance listens to what Vrebel had said and nods*

Indeed, That seems to be the fate from us, Captain *smiles*  But don't think that we could be so fortunate to do it in our terms when the final day comes, still..

Please take care of the things around here, design someone to go to speak to the dwarves led by Griff and welcome them into our campment if their kind needs help and healing.

I'm being summoned but i'll come back soon. See every men and woman prepared and rested and the walls on watch, take the time to rest since the enemy has shown again, *he marks the new forces that were seen at the Northeast.*

Don't press the attack yet, scouts have been dispatched to learn of their movements, and so we need to take advantage of the information and the fortifications.

*he start to walk then stops before leaving * And I'll speak to Raelyn, about your words, I'll be back soon. Thank you again for the help .

**With that he moves out of the tent being escorted by a Captain that bears the symbol of a lone star over the chest of the plate, just beside the Hilm crest, moving towards a man attaired in muted blue and other dark colors, the men exchanges some words of greetings, to dissapear just a moment after that *

You got it commander we'll be ready.

*After Lance leaves Vrebel takes stock of the Commanders's liquor cabinet and heads outside the tent.  He calls over a nearby sergeant taking a sip from his mug now well seasoned with some of the Commander's special bourbon.*

Sergeant send word to Major Silversand that I want all his forces inside Sundance and to bring his wounded as soon as he is able.  See to it that the Voraxian contingents and the Toranite regiments train tagether.  I'll oversee the trainin as well as Major Silversand as we have knowlege of what we've faced.  A new threat has reared its head and we need to be battle ready as soon as possible.  Were gonna have a breifin on this new threat when Commander Stargazer returns I want all the Voraxian and Toranite officers to be present.

Also see to it that the walls of the city are secured at all times with fresh guards cycled in and out.

*He sends him off taking another sip of his mug as he stares off in the distance to the still roiling mist on the horizon.

A day later after Lance and Daniella were whisked off to Hilm Castle for a mysterious meeting with the mysterious mage who seemed able to command the most prominant people of Hilm to his bidding.

Calls go up at the outer edges of Sundance, a cloud of dust on the Roughlands draws closer as scouts race in one horses that have been pushed hard. They draw up near Vrebels tent and rush to the area before being stopped by several Hilmite guards who intercept them.

A loud argument starts up and Acting commander Vrebel steps from the tent followed slowly by Major Griff of the Red Axes.

"At ease men, let them through" Vrebels voice calls above the scuffle.

The guards release the panting scouts and they tumble forward spilling their story.

"Captain, theres.....enemy.....coming.....not far."

"Hold up, get your breath and start again, enemy where and who?" Vrebel straightened the scout up whe took several deep breaths and sipped from a canteen.

"Sir, There is an enemy host made up of non humans heading this way. Probably a hundred of them. They are carrying a banner with a grey dragon on a black background. They are moving fast Sir."

Vrebel nodded then turned to Griff and several senior Hilm officers nearby. "Griff and I will head out and meet them with a small group. They shouldn't pose much threat to us."

Within the hour Vrebel, Griff, several Red Axes and Hilmite cavalry headed out the north quarter of the city towards the dust cloud in the distance. As they drew closer the non human force stopped and fanned out slightly. Vrebel slowed and ordered Griff and Sergeant Gorth of Hilm to join him in riding forward. The rest of the host came to a halt and stood their ground.

As Vrebel continued forward the huge dragon banner unfurled in the wind and from within the enemy group a wide shouldered, heavy browed orc strode forward flanked by several more orcs in heavy, dark grey plate armour. Behind him stood another orc, perhaps the ugliest orc Vrebel had seen before wearing around its neck a necklace of shrunken human skulls and bearing a staff set with the tooth of a dragon.

Vrebel pulled up just before the odd looking group of orcs and dismounted along with Griff and the Sergeant who kept a wary distance and held the reigns of their mounts.

The orc spoke in suprisingly good common once Vrebel had handed over his reigns to the sergeant.

"I be Chief Warleader of Mountain clans, Argemek. You speak for humans of city?"

Almost amused Vrebel nodded, "Yeah, I guess I do, until Sir Lance returns anyway."

"You waiting for Commander Lance Stargazer?"

Vrebel blinked suprised and Griffs hand drifted towards his axe. "Yes, he should return today or tomorrow."

The orc turned to the friekish one behind him and muttered several words in orcish before turning back.

"You tell him then, the armies of the Great Shadow not want war with Hilm. Only here to fight Green Dragon men in north. You tell him Clan Warleader Argemek want treaty with Hilm for no fighting with Hilm. You tell him it be a good idea to agree to treaty with Mountain clans."

Vrebel noticed Griff about to draw his axe and realised the dwarf had shown a good deal of restraint so far and decided to withdraw as soon as possible. He reached over and gripped Griffs wrist, his muscles corded with teh strength required to keep the dwarf from drawing his axe.

"Not now Griff, save it for later." Vrebel almost physically dragged Griff back to where the sergeant held the reigns of their mounts. "Lets just...report back."

They rode back to Sundance while the small enemy force set up camp to await a response.

The very next morning several guards arrive outside Vrebels tent to report another incident.

Vrebel emerges, one of Sir Lances finest glasses in his hand filled with a dark purplish liquid most assume is wine. "What is it this time? Is Sir lance back?"

The guards look at each other before a corporal acts as spokesperson for the group. "Captain there is something erm....strange..that you need to see."

Vrebel grinned "Strange? I assure you I've seen all kinds of strange, would you care to define this one?"

"Yes Sir, of course Sir. Over the last few days we've noticed some new faces arriving in town, some from Nesar some from some outlying villages and towns that are, well, pretty backwards compared to the city. But there are others too who seem to have come from further afield..some pretty concerning. I've seen at least one of two adventurers from Dreger and even a mercenary company from Sederra we exiled several members of a few years ago."

"I guess thats strange," mused Vrebel.

"Sorry Captain, thats not the strange bit. They have all converged on a spot to the north several miles from the mist and are...well sir...they seem to be ...um...worshipping."

"They're what?" Vrebel almost snorted out his wine in amusement. "Oh this I got to see!" He looked around for Griff and several others, picking and choosing a mixed collection of people from the area.

Before long they were on the road north towards the mist that clouded the horizon like a cloudy stain on the reddish land of the Roughlands.

By late afternoon after some hard riding they could see what the guards reported and Vrebel slowed to a halt seeing just how many had gathered over the last few days.

"How many you figure Griff?" Vrebel asked.

"Oi dunno fer sure, dere beh a lot of em, dats a fact." Griff scanned the area ahead carefully.

"Several hundred I figure. See that big guy down on the right, big sword poking above his back?"

Griff nodded as Vrebel continued.

"I faced him in battle several years back near Lor when that mess was all going on. He led a mercenary company hired by agents of Rael. Real mean *curse* he was good with a blade too. At the time he almost had me but the battle pulled us apart and I didnt get to confront him again."

"Den whats eh doin' ere?" Muttered Griff.

"I'm not sure Major, but he ain't sightseeing I can tell you that. Looks like he brought some of his people with him too. I'd love to know how they got here, who let them in. Lets grab one or two and ask them a few questions."

Hours later, in the dark of a campsite back from where the odd horde had assembled in the Roughlands Vrebel and Griff and those with them gathered around a campfire. Nearby two captives remained heavily trussed and gagged.

Vrebel spoke quietly to those assembled, "So these guys have come from all over the place, some sort of Cult serving Shaddy. Sir Lance is going to love this when he gets back. They've come to join the great battle apparently. Bunch of nutbags if you ask me. We'll leave them here for now with some scouts to watch over them and go back and let Lance deal with this headache."

In the dark of night following the arrival of the Cult of Shadows sentries on various rooftops of Sundance see a darker shape blot out the stars above as a monstrous shadowy form drifts over the city. It circles twice, its huge extended shadow cloaked wings making barely a whisper before turning north once more.

After that large bonfire towers are erected around the outside of the city and a number of priests are instructed to create permanent light sources to cast more light into the dark of night.

*One more day passes when Lance's figure appers into the campsite, being escorted by his wife Ell, and other members of the company of the Star, as they arrive Lance recieves the news of the Humanoids and the group of demihumans that come to pilgrimage in favor of the Dragon ... Lance frowns openly to the developments, and noticiing that the missing bottles of juice, he takes just one bottle to serve for him and his wife, then moves calling upon a briefing *

Good people of Hilm, noble Voraxians, and in general to all who has helped us to stand against the abominations that strike us today .

I've heard of the information given on my absence and we are at war, as usual i know you are hardened people who are used to deal with difficult situations, death doesn't scare us, in honor and virtue we stand and grow to defend that we believe.

Our enemy this time comes partially from other pits of existance, I am deploying priests alongside each divission for the figth to them, The gods will be with us today but we mortals are the ones who have to wield the blades with their guidance, as My Lord guides mine.

The orcs, servants of the Dragon as they claim, come with a plea for truce, they speak that their master doesn't want to wage war with us, but speaking with this their master claws drips blood from our very brothers in battle, they attacked us first, and they are entering our territory. Are we waiting for them to do their nefarious purpose and then turn their heads towards our homes asn families?  No, we won't, Hilm won't offer any truce unless they withdraw from where they come, only then they will be spared. An alliance to use our territory for crossing the country an attacking other territory? That is not the honorable thing to do .

Reinforcements are on the way, as we have once again to defend our lands, and once again with the guidance of the gods, we'll succeed.

*Lance ends the speech and then start to give orders for the groups and pulling the scarse resources he has, he places some clerics to observe the activitities of the "cultists" or "pilgrims" that are on the outside of the city.

*The man looks at the city his people has to defend, and he gestures towards his own Captains, and the representatives of Voraxians ( aka Griff ) and to Vrebel to met with him, Lance awaits with Ell standing beside him *

*Once there he explains, that the fight will have to be taken to diferent fronts, and that he'll leave for Briardusk to coordinate the defenses over there, he can't help but to offer a toast with Grape juice *

" FOR VICTORY GENTLEMEN "

*He gives instruction of careful aproach on it though, and to use the city defenses for the advantage on the situation*

Within hours of Lances decree to the people of Sundance and his scouts deliver the message to the non human force camped in the Roughlands north of Sundance the host abandons their temporary camp and hurry back to the mountains to the east.

The scouts return to Sundance after delivering Lance's message with a further missive from the leader of the host.

"To the leader of the Hilmite forces, know that your fate is sealed. The shadows will be unleashed on your lands as well as the lands of the Siphe Garra. Many of your people will die and you will know their deaths could have been avoided by staying out of our business. The Deepening Dark calls to the servants of Grand and others and we answer.

The Night will become your enemy."

Soon after Lance is looking at maps of Hilm and where allied units reside, numbers and deployment options when a mage is brought to him from Briardusk. The man bows then speaks.

"My Lord Commander, Lord Amaric of Briardusk asked me to personally update you of our situation. We have four divisions of infantry we are able to field Sir and deploy to the south at your request as well as one division of cavalry, approximately five thousand men and woman Sir. However, Lord Amaric wanted me to point out the fact that Molvaen has moved even more troops to his border west of Briardusk. Lord Amaric begs that you reconsider this action as it will leave our western border with Kuhl largely undefended."

He pauses a moment to let the finality of his words sink in. "Lord Amaric believes this may be a ploy by the Deepening Dark, that it actually never stopped working with Molvaren and the plan is to draw most of our armies to the south and leave Hilm Castle weakened and provide Molvaren the opportunity to capture it."

Various people present at the briefing glance at each other with worried faces. Could it be an elaborate plan by Molvaren and the Deepening Dark to destroy Hilm once and for all?  Sensing the disquiet his news brings the mage speaks again.

"My Lord Commander, Lord Amaric suggests another alternative Sir. There is a major encampment of Raelite soldiers north of Briardusk, over ten thousand of them sir. They have been there since the end of the war waiting from orders from Rael to invade Kuhl. Lord Amaric suggests that perhaps they can be persuaded to support us in some way."

*Lance weights in the options and the numbers, the expression of hardened general lost for a moment after hearing the report of the mage*

I'll be departing towards Briardusk soon, If it can be helped I'll speak with the Raelites, If they are so eager to invade Khul, maybe the defense and the promise to lower the number of attackers may serve if not we'll see what the Raelites say.

He is right Lance.  We could use the help if we are to thin our numbers. The people have worked hard to keep a hold on what they have and it would be just like the enemy to pull such a maneuver.  Rael's forces have been sitting there on their thumbs for quite some time, I'm sure they are quite eager for battle.  But that is just my 2 True.

*She looks at the map quietly, studying the markings and placements, waiting for instructions.*

*Lance nods * I am not naive to think that only the promise of battle will be enough to make the Realites to join the efforts, the sitaution with Rael has been tricky since the start of the war, and yet the war is not over, but i am willing to negotiate with them.

And its not the same to face an army of 5000 than one of 15000, still its a dangerous battle, On the brighter side we have the fort and its defenses will help us to stand the attack, But we have to plan our movements well .

Tell me what you require and I will send out scouts or runners to accomplish such.  And if need be, I will go myself.  Perhaps an invitation to the commander of Rael's Troops, or do you wish to approach them yourself?

*he smiles at her , apparently not having lost his confidence on the matter* Stand ready that is all we could posibly want, we need to be ready in order to maybe use this chance to gain some advantage on our own war.

Lets be patient, and yes your scouts would be needed once the skirmshes start.

So lets save our energies for then shall we?  and yes, Speaking with the raelites and knowing of their stance and situations first would be the best before deciding what to do or how to present our proposal . Once we arrive to Briardusk that is it.

For now see that a couple of scouts are assigned to the Voraxians there in case they don't have such resources, I'd like to have eyes everywhere as we stand here.  We may at least try to make it a bit easier for our allies in the south. And hoping that once the threat is done we'll be able to tighten those alliances and drive back the enemy.

Scouts sent to the Voraxians has been implemented.  If there is nothing more required of me, I will see to the Archers, see that the supplies are well distributed, repairs made, and other such things I'm sure you have no interest in now *Grinning at him* and just send a runner for me if you need anything.

*She stiffens and salutes and disappears out the tent flap, only to have her head reappear inside*

Oh, and Lance ... *When he looks to her* ... thanks so much for the bow, *Gives him a big smile and a wink and in a flash, is gone again*

*Almost a week later, Jil come trotting into the camp, looking tired, sweaty and anxious.  *She nods her thanks wit ha tired smile as the guards let her pass into the camp.  She weaves through the tents and the people, avoiding any mishaps with ease.  She does not slow or falter in her steps and keeps a steady pace while along the way she will call out to someone she knows ahead of her to ask if Lance is in his tent.   When she reaches his tents.  She takes a deep breath, straightens and she knocks on the on the wooden pole holding up the tent with the handle of her skinning knife and awaits his call to enter.  Upon his word, she strolls into the tent, walks up beside him and looks him in the eye to be sure she has his attention. When he nods, she speaks, slowly and wit hsurety.*

"I followed the numerous tracks along this route, *She runs her fingers along the path she took on the map on the table before them, ending at the base of the Orsgaunt mountains, northeast of Sundance* ending here.  I found a secure place from prying eyes and for as far as my eyes can see, there at the foot of the mountain are numerous orcs,  goblins, ogres, giants and even some trolls. *She shakes her head at the enormity and array of such foul creatures* Odd and macabre standards  and poles were raised in many places. Lance, *She looks really concerned at this point* there had to be close to fifty or sixty thousand of them.  *She repeats the numbers again slowly.  She slides her fingers showing the area encompassed by the huge army on the map.*

Not long after  I arrived and while assessing the situation, Deep horns were being blown.  They started preparing to move the horde.  The preparation consisted of giants pushing huge battering rams and at least a large number of war  elephants, mountain beasts and chained war gorillas the size of ogres  were among the host.   And Lance, leading them, was the Orc that delivered that first message here and that Priest of Grand, Segemek who stood with him.  It took me just a few days to get back, moving a group that large will take a little longer, but not much more.

*She takes a deep breath and exhales, and looks to Lance, watching the emotions in his face as he assesses the situation.  She says nothing more, but waits patiently for his new orders.*

At roughly the same time of Jil's report to Lance, two weeks travel by horse to the north, Siphe Castle is abuzz with activity. The Sovereign Lord is due back within the next 24 hours and acting lord Nijau is determined that Jaedon Siphe will find everything in order for his return.

As the sun reaches directly overhead Siphe Garra of the ninth on eastern wall duty hear an odd sound. A low dull rumble that someone eventually realises is coming from the eastern passage. The castle superiors are summoned to the wall and gaze out into the narrow passage.  Nijau turns to Daniella, "This may be it, our Lords return. He then moves to the edge of the battlement and bellows into the courtyard below. "SOUND THE HORNS, I WANT ALL EIGHTH AND NINTH IN FIELD PARADE AND ALL OFFICERS PRESENT."

Within minutes horns sound around the fort and into the city beyond it. Workers rebuilding parts of the castle stop their work and make their way towards the eastern wall, eager to see the return of their leader. Soldiers pour from every corner of the fort onto the parade grounds, each man and woman finding their place as if it is as familiar to them as an evening meal.

By the time the several thousand soldiers and their officers are assembled the low rumble in the passage has grown louder. Nijau and others stood on the battlements gazing into the area beyond the wall. Visibility along the passage was only good for about fifteen hundred feet before it curved away and cut any chance of seeing further.

Suddenly their attention was drawn upwards as a dark shadow fell over them. Seconds later a huge roar filled the air as the mighty red dragon Ractrafiorez descended from on high, his huge wings extended to allow him to glide slowly towards the battlements. Upon his back sat what could only be Jaedon Siphe wearing an ancient set of red plate mail with numerous spikes protruding from various parts of the armor. His helm resembled the head of a dragon and bore tall horns that curled upwards.

As Ractrafiorez massive bulk descended, guards of the ninth on the wall scattered just as the dragons long, deadly claws gripped the wall tightly causing rock to crack beneath the strength of its grip. The dragon clutched onto the wall, twice the height of the wall its head suddenly lowered to allow Jaedon to step off its back and onto the wall.

From this close it was clear to see the damaged wing of the dragon and a great black scar across its back and side and down one powerful hind leg from the battle over a year ago at Briardusk against the Drach Ori's defensive magic.

Jaedon Siphe removed the dragon helm, his face was drawn and tight as he shouted to the gate guards below. "OPEN THE GATES."

Soldiers rushed to fulfill his command and just as the gates swung open the first fire giants emerged around the corner of the passage. They were followed by many more until over a hundred fire giants, all decked out in war gear and carrying monstrous weapons had entered the castle and marched through to the Fire giant camp beyond the western walls. Many also noted that amongst the fire giant host was an elf who sauntered along beside a man wearing an odd helmet. They were later identified as Razeriem and the infamous mercenary Steel.

The entire time Jaedon Siphe and Ractrafiorez stood motionless watching as the host marched through and when they were finally done Siphe turned to his commanders for the first time.

Nijau stepped forward briskly and saluted in the Garra fashion. "Sovereign Lord, everything is in order for our campiagn to the south."

Jaedon Siphe regarded him for several moments, his face stern and unyielding. "Very Good First Rank, I'll have your report in my quarters within the hour. I'll address the council an hour after that. See to it that the Lady Eliza and Princess Shay'lar are brought to my chambers after that and in the meantime I want eighty percent of our battle groups fully equipped and ready to march south by tomorrow morning. I want the mercenary Steel in my war room within the hour as well. See to it."

He looked past Nijau and for a moment locked eyes on Daniella. It appeared he was about to say something but then he looked at the dragon and back to Nijau. "That will be all First, see to it that my orders are carried out." With that he turned to the dragon and stood looking at it for several moments before he nodded as if the dragon had said something. Seconds later the dragon raised its wings and favouring its undamaged one lifted off the battlement sending several large blocks of stone crashing into the passage beyond the wall.

Once the dragon had lifted into the air Jaedon Siphe made for the stairs down to the courtyard below.

Daniella stood silent and resolute as Jaedon Siphe landed with Ractrafieroz, watching the dragon more than anything else with a high degree of suspicion and distrust.  For just a brief moment, she locked eyes with Siphe, but her expression was stone.  As the dragon flew away, she once again turned her expression to its massive form, assessing the damage the dragon still carried.  She then made a passing glance over the Sovereign Lord before turning on her heel and heading back to see about her own duties, heading in a direction away from where Jaedon Siphe had gone.

Deciding to stay near the fire giants, Steel also watches Ractra fly away. With the dragon out of sight, he turns to Razeriem, assuming the elf hasn't already started fraternizing with the nearest fair maiden.

"You were right. I see a forced march coming, and that means field battle again."

He sniffs, turning about to survey the city surrounding him.

"This place is really popular. Maybe we should open a tavern here."

After a few more minutes of looking at the giants with whom he entered the city, "Perhaps we should go find the Champion... or at least comfortable lodgings."

*After helping a toranatite soldier to her feet he hands her sword back brushing the dirt out of her hair and offering a sweaty smile and then turns to the rest of the training regiment*

Good work everyone just keep in mind them orcs aint gonna play nice.  Watch yer flanks and as well as yer commrades.

*With that he whips his training sword around handing it to a nearby soldier hilt first and makes his way to the Commander's tent having seen Jil heading in that direction.  Once at the tent he hovers outside bracing his hands on the doorway listening to her dire report.*

I guess they weren't bluffin'.  *He smirks to himself a bit*  So from what I'm gatherin' the entire circus is comin' our way and not movin' on Fieroz City?

We got what looks like a horde of mongrels to our North East comin' our way, a shadow storm to our North with dragons in it and some loony worshipers ta boot, and to our West Kuhl is rattling their sabers and potentially mountin' an offensive inta Hilm proper.  Swell.  Good news is we dont got anything to our South. *He smirks* least not yet.

Seems we have a bit of time to prepare before the battle monkies get here.  I got some suggestions but I'd wait to defer ta the Commander.

*He glances toward Lance with an appologetic smile after his short outburst*

*Lance looking at the map and the figures on the field frowns a bit *

Well indeed not bluffing, yet I do not regret of the choice that we have made, even if the situation looks unadvantageous, its not worse than what we could have gotten anyway, this creatures holds the banner of an unfair cause, and they would have stabed us in the back at the first chance, not to mention that they attacked us first, We are not going to turn our back to our allies.

Now This indeed its something to worry though, I am not naive enough to not to consider this army a threat, but well, that not going to stop us, isn't it? They may as well try to come to us, to try to remove any enemies on their back, What most concern me is why they are  comming to us in first place if their supposedly intended target lies to the north, Something is afoot with them .

*he looks at the officers gathered* We have secured about 10,000 troops more to defend Briardusk, that have to keep the army of Khul in check , at least to think twice to attack on the western border, so we need to focus on this battle, and hopefully we end strong enough to show those Dragonstealers what is what they got for showing their nose on here.

I need the cavalry ready, and the archers as well, Need secured the warehouses and the supply lines, If they intend to raise a siege.

*He looks upon Vrebel* If you may so please speak of your ideas and proposals, we evaluate them and see the viality of them, we are here after all together to plan the best strategies.

*he moves a step closer towards Ell, then looks at Griff and the other gathered officers * Your ideas also are welcomed.

*he looks at the assembly*

*Griff studies the map intensely with one hand on the table bracing himself and the other clutching at his well trained beard*

Aye Command'a, just keep dem 10,000 Raelite toads outa dis foight n weh gona be jus' foine.  Toime on our soide 'ere, so weh bes make use a it.  We're gona need deh standard castle toype defenses, which Oim sure ye well versed on *coughs* archers, oil, foire arrows, trebuckets n deh loike.

*Griff looks a bit more at the map and the terrain surrounding the castle's 500 meter radius*

Which way ye figure deh gon'a beh com'n from ifn deh attack deh town?  If'n ders a better way tah funnel em, den weh bes be figuri'n how tah getem tah travel where weh want em.  Les try tah keep em on deh low ground n out n deh open ifn weh can.

*Griff stands straight and arches his back in a stretch*

Ye know, a couple tings.  One, is if we got em 'ere or weh can make em quick loike, how bouts some far shoot'n large arrows launched outa balistas.  Oim talk'n big ol'e arrows loike dis soize *motions the size of the table or approximately six feet*.  They don't need tah be accurate if we're talk'n 50,000 plus troops packed loike sardines, they jus need tah shoot far.  Loight dem bassards up wit some foire n a foire bomb attached, n dat do some damage n scare tah heck outa dem gobotypes fer sure.  Oh, n weh may wana  dem balista's at 'bout three-quarters pow'a.  Dat way once deh tink deh got us distanced, weh can lay inta em again at full pow'a.

Now, deh otter ting.  Weh gona need tah be able tah have some small stroike forces ready, so deh can get n and outa deh castle quickly.  Oi figure ifn deh gots some trebuckets dat do'n damage to us, den weh gona need tah go out n root dem suckers out.  Also, ifn we catch eyes of dis ugly arse Orc leader den weh bes foind a way tah get tah 'em quick loike.  If'n weh can face der lead'a n wipe him n his groupies out, den der moral gona take a big hit n most prolly start run'n fer hills.

Also, Oi's suggest set'n up some ov yer calvary hidden outsoide deh town, so if'n weh need em n a planned attack, den deh can come in on deh enemies flank so we're not all com'n outa deh castle proper loike.  Ye can figure some horn signals or deh loike tah get yer message tah em.

Meh Voraxians n Oi stand ready n will'n fer deh foight Command'a.  The Battle Fath'a has led us 'ere for a reason.  Faith Command'a, weh jus need tah believe n He will allow us tah prevail over our enemy.  Our camp is very strong.

*As Lance and then Griff speak Vrebel lowers his head and enters the tent.  He pours himself some of Lance's "bourbon" and then leans against a tent post drinking and listening until their finished.*

Some good suggestions Major Silversand.  I like keepin' a force outside the city walls for counterstrikes.  I also like yer idea of greasin' the battle field.  If we have time I'd say dig trenches outside the walls and poure grease in em' as well.  Once the enemy is in range we have Jil's archers light em up.

*He regards Lance*

Nice of you ta find somethin' for them Raelies ta do Commander.  I'm sure you know we'll need extra guards around our food stores inside the city.  There aint much outside these city walls to eat and an army of the size Jil is talkin' is gonna need provisions.

I'd like to have scouts out in front of this army from the North East so we know how fast thier movin', their direction and how long we have to prepare.  I don't like surprises.  If thier movin slow enough it might be a good idea to pick them off and reduce their numbers as they approach our way with small strike forces at night.

Do we know if there are any tunnels or sewage routes that we can access to leave the city?  We could use them for counterstrikes against the enemy and possibly evacuate the women and children if things start goin down hill.  If the enemy is aware of them then we'll have to make preperations to defend the city from incursions.

*He looks down at the map and continues*

Seems like a bit of a chess game.  Apparently their putin all their resources into Sundance to remove any chance of us comin' on thier flank.  After their done with us they can concentrate on Siphe Principality.  We dont know what that shadow cloud is gonna do.  Maybe it will attack Fieroz City while the horde attacks Sundance.  Maybe it will join the battle here.

As for Jaedon *he stares at the tent walls with a smirk*  we'll see how honorable he is and if he chooses to come to our aid seein' as all this appears to be his fault.  I'm not holdin' my breath.

Commander maybe you can get those talkin rocks back to operational so we can coordinate with Commander Stormhaven.  I hear she used to have some influence with Siphe.

*He leans back against the tent post and lights up a pipe*

Of course I was right, it's a curse really.

I am NOT getting involved in ANY military chains of command.  I had my fill of ground wars and being responsible for folks at Brairdusk.

Here is my plan, lay low and stay out of sight.  When the fighting starts, find a place to be useful and unaccounted for.  Save a few units, slay a few foes and get heaps of gratitude from those I helped because my help wasn't expected or counted on.  Maybe save the Crimson Dragon there or Siphey and get a game of chess out of it.

Castle Siphe:

The next twenty four hours at the castle see the place as a hive of activity as respective battle groups are mobilised and outfitted for war. Supplies are stockpiled and loaded onto as many carts and wagons as can be found, groups of armed Siphe Garra move through the city seizing anything they need for the fight to the south on Sovereign Lord Siphes orders. The first few merchants that protest, men who travelled from Hilm to trade with the Siphe Garra are promptly arrested, have their papers to trade in the Pincipality burned before them and are then escorted to the border and forbidden to return. The rest soon fall into line.

During that time rumours abound around the main castle and out into the city
...Jaedon Siphe is now part human, part dragon
...Daniella Stormhaven has agreed to bring Toran's armies to the battle
...Ractrafiorez has come to prove to the Siphe Garra he will protect them
...Jaedon Siphe has decided to marry the princess of Nesar so they can help fight Shadrixkayls minions.
...Jaedon Siphe has decided to marry the Lady Eliza of Hilm with the hope to one day assume Lord Alexanders role and control all of Hilm.
...Jaedon Siphe has sold his soul to the fire giant king
...Jaedon Siphe is hiring the infamous adventurers and notorious mercenary Steel and Razeriem to assassinate Shadrixkayl
...and more.

But what is known for certain is that the dangerous and highly trained forces of the Siphe Garra and their Fire Giant and Toranite allies are preparing to march south to war with the growing forces of Shadrixkayl that lie hiding beneath a vast cloud of Mist that seems to provide them with some protection.

Sundance:

A city full of fear, already almost a third of the populace have fled the city fearing another rampage through the city as happened when Kuhl invaded Hilm and the Myr'drachs killed without abandon on the city's streets.

Even the presence of Hilms emminent Commander, Sir Lance and some notable personages in Captain Vrebel, Huntswoman Jil and Major Griff of the Red Axes, just to name a few, not enough to stop the fear. The news that fifty to sixty thousand non humans could be marching on the city within days too much for many.

Word has it that Sir lance has already had word of some desertions from the army ranks. With the five thousand soldiers at his command Sir lance and those with him begin to arrange an intensive defensive strategy around the vital core of the city, deciding that with such few soldiers they cannot hold a large front against such an overwhelming force.

Sir lance has promised that within a few days another eight thousand soldiers from Briardusk will arrive as the ten thousand Raelites encamped outside the city have accepted the duty of protecting Briardusk and holding Kuhls growing forces at the border at bay.

Beyond that Lord Alexander has reluctantly committed another ten thousand soldiers to the field but only in support of defending Sundance. These are not expected to arrive for at least another week and a half.

*Lance regards Vrebel and Griff with a nod *

It is being done Captain Vrebel, all the things you mentioned, But even with that their numbers are overwhelmed, morale its our enemy here too, so we must show no hessitation at all in front of the troops, I want everyone to give a full report of the actual men we have, and to do work with the troops to make sure they understand the importance of the task we have at hand.

The warehouses are being sought for oil, with the famine it may not be as common or abundant as one expect, yet the trenches are already being on excavation work. *Looks upon Vrebel* Please make sure of the Ballistas are ready, *then looks at Griff*  as for the cavalry they will react as strike teams. But as it stands the strike forces have to be ordened alongside the whole city *he points at several places around the inner wall of the core of the city, we need to double check and have every civil evacuated from the initial conflict zone, Near 8000 troops are on their way, and the reinforcements won't come soon, so we need to deal a good strike upon the e
enemy as we can, they are after all still 60 thousand or so.

*Looks at Vrebel again*  Right now i won't count on Siphe,. the whole horde its beetwen us and them and the distance of trip maybe a factor, But lets not discard them, the man has helped in the past and his word and honor is beyond any doubt in my heart, and yet same as us, he has to see for his people. *he doesn't do any remark regarding Daniella though *

This is the time for us to stand and show what are we made of people. It will be as always an honor to fight alongside you.

Now.. lets win this shall we ?

*A couple days later, Jil arrives back  at the camp, trotting up to Lance's Tent.  She raps again on the pole  an awaits an answer before entering.  Upon greeting him with a grim  smile, she walks over to the map and begins pointing out locations and  explaining her observances.*

Here ... in the roughlands, they have set up camp,  about a days travel North from Sundance.  They are settling in and  setting up defenses.  From my position south of this camp, I spied  another large camp to the NorthWest.  I skirted this main camp to the  East and North and spotted another large encampment... here (Taps her  finger).  No where near as big as the non human one and more haphazard  and disorderly. It is a camp of the Shaddy cultists.

So anyways, I stayed through the night, which  turned out to be quite bright and allowed me to get real close to the  camp.  After some time I estimate of numbers are roughly two thousand or  so and they appear fairly nondescript except for one section of the  camp furthest from where I had hidden myself, that is neat, tidy,  orderly and has guards patrolling it. A flag hangs limply above the main  tent in its center.  I stood there some time and the wind finally moved  it enough for me to see a Grey colored dragon over an hourglass with  only a few grains of sand left at the top on the flag.

I figured that something important was going on, so I summoned a bit of help and got to the tent (She grins with no further explanation* This is what I heard ... *She closes her eyes, concentrates and alters her voice to sound similar and replays the conversation*

"The master is pleased  with the numbers you have brought. He does not  wish you to engage the  humans to the south. They are insignificant to  his plans for now.  Segemek will direct your allies from the mountains  and provide support  to ensure the humans cannot come to the aid of those  to the north. You  will be asked to fulfill your promise in three weeks  time, until then  you must prepare and take control of all here then move  to a ravine to  the north west of here that I will show you. There you  will lie in wait  until it is your time. Segemek will ensure you are not  disturbed.

Three weeks, remember this."

*She opens her eyes*
That was some kind of shadow creature. They broke up, I disengaged and made my way back with all due haste.

Well. I must commend their generals for the ruse, The threat of a Siege with such army was not more than a ruse inside another, so they intend to attack to the north with the main force remaining some unknown plan to keep us here, Those numbers are indeed a great deal of advantage

*he studies again the map then nods to Jill*  Please send scouts to keep an eye on the enemy movements on all time, we need to keep our eyes open for that, and prepare the army, Once they will start to move we'll see the posiblity for an attack on the ones who decide to stay to keep us.

A patrol found me and reported some very disturbing news.  Everywhere in the roughlands, and I do mean, ~everywhere~, each nook and cranny, ditch, ravine, crevice and cave, you name it, has an orc, goblin and anything else that can be hidden in it lying in wait.

*She sighs and shakes her head, then holds up a hand to forestall anything he may respond.*  Also, *She points to a spot with a marker indicating a camp*

2 patrols have been captured and are being held here.  8 men and women are tied up on large pole constructs wearing just their small clothes in front of the main tent.  They have been severely whipped and beaten.  Symbols of Grand have been carved into their chests and their bare  torsos are splattered with dirt and blood. Several appear unconscious.  Before them on the ground is something, of which I am unsure of, gives me the sinking feeling it's some kind of trap.   Now, I know this is a ways out, and no guarantee that they may still be alive, but I feel that if they are setting such a trap, they would do what they could to keep them barely alive to draw us in.  The place was crawling with the enemy, so there was no way I could get any closer nor do a rescue attempt on my own with what few folk I had with me.  But these are good scouts, they have families, and they are being tortured for our benefit *With a look of distaste*.  This is a small encampment, scattered between us many non-humanoid creatures my other scouts can place or spot once again.  But not only can it be a rescue mission, but informational gathering as well if we do this right.  And if they do not survive, we can at least bring the bodies back to thier loved ones.

But then, the decision to go or not, rests upon you, Lance.  *She spreads her hands out towards the map* My scouts have worked hard and have done their job well.  I couldn't ask for a better group than what I have under my command.  *She looks to him for his reply, watching his eyes.*

*Griff watches Jil and he appears to be boiling inside.  He does not wait for Lance to answer when she's done*

Oi will lead dis group! *slams his axe flat on the table*  We will get yer scouts back and those dat oppose us will feel deh wrath of deh Battle Fatha.  He will deliver us tah our enemy with strong axes n roight cause.  It is time for des bassards tah see our battle eyes!

I'm sorry to hear about yer scouts Jil.  Thats just plain sick what they've done.

*Vrebel lays a comforting hand on her shoulder* You and yer scouts have provided this effort very good intel so far.  I'm not going to let them down now.

*He glances down briefly at the map*

Yeah its probably a trap.  But they better hope they're prepared for the prey their lurin' in.  We'll need to make an example out of them so they dont treat prisoners like this in the future.

I am curious bout your ideas of doin' it "right" so we can get some information?

Anyways, *Shrugs and lays his greatsword down on Griff's axe still on the table* I'm in.

Doing it right means, leaving someone alive to question, like a leader.  Or not burn down a tent containing papers, not killing the cowardly messengers ... *She rolls a hand indicating she could go on and the different things they could look for.*  Yes, I understand in the height of battle, that is hard to do and honestly, I have no love for them.   All I ask is while you are "teaching them a lesson" you keep an eye out for such things and make the best of the situation.  This is no little skirmish, this is a move on a larger game of chess and we need to learn about the opponents as much as we can.  Its not just our lives on the line here, but everyone else in this battle and the the people we fight for on this continent.  *She smiles at the dwarves*  I'm sure Vorax would rain his gratitudes down upon you if you were able to really stick it to the nemy in the way it would hurt most.

*Lance met Jil's gaze when it came to him, but the Commander has remained silent during the exchange, his eyes shows obvious concern and distaste for the situation that the people is in, and yet his mind is running thru plots over the time, he listen intently to the words given then hearing Jil again he breaks the silence*

This creatures have no forgiveness from our side, this shows their true colors, I agree that they should be rescued, We'll show that Hilm nor we leave our allies unprotected. *Looks upon Griff and Vrebel* Your worth is as always proved then thousand times to any army.

*Looks at Jill* Arrange what is needed to prepare this incursion, show us how we can approach the most without being spotted to use the surprise that such attack may bring. *Looks upon Griff and Vrebel again * And what she says its true, where our main objective its the recovery of our prisioners any intel we may be able to gather will serve to save even more lives.

*To Jill* Vorax milady, doesn't just teach of the way to fight bravely, part of what they are good at is tactics and strategy as well. I am fully confident that Griff here will do what is worth in order to gain this war with the less casualities posible .

*Then addresses to the Vrebel and Griff again* We should not forget that this group may have conection with the cultists to the West ( Khul ), so there is way more to gain in this than this battle, we need to remember that the stronger we end this conflict the better for repelling or even starting an offensive against Khul, they moved some pieces as you said. .Just think the same ruse in a greater scale.

Get ready then.. the faster we attack the better chances we may hold.

*Time passes and the Commander Stargazer , takes his leave towards his personal tent, after some time he returns holding a pale blue stone on his hand , his features concerning, he has been waiting for about 20 mins after the last message*

*muttering to himself*
She must have been out of energy again...  Not much to do but to keep up fighting towards this side.

*he return his sight to the map, locating the crevice that was spoken by Jil spies, he then addresses a meeting and send the information towards the rest of the troops to be ready*

We'll do the rescue first, then we need to prepare to move, we can't afford to be stopped here,. the longer we stand here the stronger our enemy gets in the frontier.

*he looks upon the dark sky, making a small silent prayer , a single lone star seems to brighten in his eyes and his eyes alone, taking away any trepidation of the knight soul*

After days of preparation the armies of the Siphe Garra, made up of two main Battleforces, each comprising of several Battlelegions wended their way towards the southern borders of the Principality. Once there, in two main camps approximately a days march from each other they prepared their defences.

Their fire giant allies had already been busy in the weeks previously hauling huge boulders and rocks into place to create several raised defensive bluffs which would give archers and boulder throwers cover and stall the advance of any attacking forces.

Battleforce Oaxsama, named after the First Rank who led it, Nijau, Jaedon Siphes right hand man held the camp about a weeks march from the base of the Orsgaunt Mountains, while the other Battleforce was commanded by Jaedon Siphe with his recently appointed, primary advisor Lady Commander Daniella Stormhaven.

Within days the campsites were established just inside the border defences with Battlelegions taking turns to man the ramparts. Many took time to examine and wonder at the purpose of the glowing boulders the giants had put into place at intervals along the border. At night their dull red glow lit up over a small area and could be seen from far into the distance.

After a week in camp, all preparations were completed and drills were being run by those responsible to do so. All seemed calm, that is, until a night when there were no moons visible in the sky and the stars were hidden for the most part behind dark clouds. Soldiers on watch at Camp Oaxsama were startled into readiness as several fire giants shouted alarms and raced to the nearest glowing boulder to one side of their main defences. It had started to glow brighter, a dull angry red and emitted a low thrumming sound.

Horns were blown, men and women were roused from slumber in the deep of night, torches flared to life along the border defences as several thousand soldiers took up positions.

First Rank Nijau and his main advisors, including Lady Jillian of the Toranites took position centrally with a fire giant called Kirger that was in charge of the giants in this region. As they watched, tendrils of mist snaked into view across the barren lifeless ground of the Roughlands, spreading as far as the light from their torches could penetrate into the darkness. Nijau shouted an order and archers at intervals along the front lines lit flare arrows and launched them into the night sky. They drifted in long arcs out into the Roughlands to reveal masses of mist like shapes drifting towards them in vast numbers.

A gasp of disbelief followed by a quick prayer to Toran issued from Jillians stunned lips. Nijau seemed to regather his composure quickly and turned to those around him.

"Get word to the leaders of each Battlegroup immediately, they cannot let fear overtake them, they must hold the line no matter what is out there."

Jillian nodded to Nijau, "I'll make sure the Toranites who joined us are spread out at intervals to do what they can."

As people rushed to make ready Nijau could do nothing but watch as the mist built up and then steadily moved forward.

Not long after tense men and women watched the mist gather, thicker and thicker before them then suddenly rise up and surge forward like a wave. It reached as high as their defences and curled as if to smother them from above but just as it reached a point where it could come crashing down on them the dull throbbing sound from the glowing red boulders flared like a deep throated trumpet burst shattering the eerie quietness of the battlefield. The vibration of the sound caused the mist to break apart and dissolve just in time to reveal masses of creatures of all sorts of terrifying countenance that surged forward with a myriad of cries, shouts, roars and hisses.

They came at the ramparts, up and over, the soldiers fought with everything they had to defend their homeland. Here and there on the battlefield holy light glowed from the various Toranites supporting the Garra host. Once the Siphe Garra discovered that many of the enemies they faced still bled and could die they steadied recovered and began to hold their ground, retaking their former positions after several hours of fighting and slowly beginning to drive the enemy back. First Rank Nijau and Lady Jillian along with a battlegroup made up of a high number of Toranites and some of Nijau's best warriors moved up and down the line lending additional power to the fight as needed.

Several hours before dawn the creatures retreated along with the mist that had settled just outside the light range of the fire giants glowing boulders.

When morning came the worst of the stories from the nights battle was those of the Siphe Garra or any Toranites that were not killed by the enemy but instead were dragged screaming back into the mist laden Roughlands, their cries of horror the last thing their comrades could hear before they disappeared into the enemies clutches. Several archers sobbed as they recalled shooting arrows into friends who were carried off in the night rather than let the enemy have them.

The next night they came again, and the next night, each time they struck in another way, from another angle, testing, probing the Siphe Garra and Fire giant defences.  By the fifth night word had arrived from Jaedon Siphes camp that no attacks had been forthcoming against their section of the border and there had been no reports of any enemies being seen within Principality lands. Whereas at Battlegroup Oaxsama, Nijau did have to report the loss of at least a hundred soldiers who had been taken by the enemy alive, as well as a tally of over a hundred dead and the same amount wounded.

 ******************************************************

Meanwhile, a long way to the south in Sundance, dwarves began to arrive in small groups, strong and hardy servants of Vorax, called to join the Major by their various Generals around the world to put down the threat being made by the servants of Grand. Their timing welcomed warmly by all those present and most especially by Major Griff and Captain Vrebel who Sir lance had given full authority to in order to rescue the captured scouts held by the enemy horde.

By the time word reached Sundance of the first attacks against Camp Oaxsama Major Griff and Captain Vrebel were putting the last few details of their assault onto the table for Sir Lance to approve. Their plan relied heavily on the adventurers gathered to make a difference in the battle they expected to face. The fact that the enemy numbered in the tens of thousands didn't seem to faze them at all. In the end if was their confidence that allowed Sir Lance to give them the go ahead.

By the time Battlegroup Oaxsama faced their fifth night of combat a small force comprised of a several adventurers, a company of five hundred archers, a thousand Hilmite pikes, 200 mixed Toranite and Hilmite heavy cavalry and over fifteen hundred battle hardened dwarves marched to the north of Sundance. Their journey took over a week before they established a based camp several hours march from the Hordes last known location. Already Huntsmistress Jil and her scouts had taken down over two dozen orc and kobold scouts hiding in some of the multitudes of holes, caves and ravines in the Roughlands as they made their approach.

With a camp established Major Griff, Captain Vrebel and several others made their way forward to gain a better view of the enemies position. Within hours Jil had brought them to a craggy bluff that gave them an opportunity to take in the sheer size and spread of the enemy horde.

Griff whisteled through his teeth, "Dats a lot of boogers teh kill."

"I'll take the left side, you take the right," Vrebel joked as he used Jils viewing glass to get a better view of the terrain between them and the horde. Inside he felt excited at the battle ahead but a was admittedly nervous of the outcome now seeing the enemy hordes actual size. As powerful as he was, all it took was one lucky blow to end his part in the battle.

"Aye" Griff couldnt say much else as his gaze swept over what lay ahead. "What deh?" Griff suddenly pointed to something moving through the middle of the camp.

Vrebel shifted his view to look at the object and grunted. "So they've got a 30 foot tall stone collossus out there as well. I've taken them down before." Sure enough the massive stone construct was moving to the centre of the camp where the main tent was carrying something suspended from its hands which it lowered to the ground.

"Wait a minute," said Vrebel s he watched, "its got something. A..umm...oh *curse* its a cage, they've got more prisoners, Garra by the look of them. What are they doing this far south?" He watched as the cave was opened and a dozen Siphe garra and even a Toranite were dragged out of the cage and taken away into the larger tent. They didnt re-emerge. "This just got a whole lot harder." Muttered Vrebel.

"Nay different, we take em all out den." Griff answered. "First loight tomorrow, wit deh sun at our backs."

The next day dawned bright and warm, Jil returned to announce several kobolds near their position had been taken out and the time to go was now. The force set out with the dwarves to the front behind Vrebel and Griff. They stayed low as best they could working their way forward drawing ahead of the archers and the pikes and cavalry which were to provide reserve troops and hold their path open for them to flee back along.

As they reached the bluff from which they had spied on the enemy the day before they began to fan out and move towards the front line of the horde. Just were still a mile away from the edge of the enemy camp when an orc suddenly appeared out of a cleft in some rocks and attacked a dwarf. it was cut down within seconds until another one suddenly appeared from seemingly nowhere.

within the next few moments chaos and confusion reigned as orcs, goblins, kobolds and others popped up from various places in the ground, and more just kept coming. Vrebel and Griff became separated as the attackers slowed and stalled then had to turn back on themselves and face attackers emerging within their own ranks. Vrebel cut down at least a dozen of the non humans before suddenly something hit him hard in the back and made him stagger. Turning quickly he looked down at a boulder the size of his head that had just struck him in the back. Then within seconds the sky was full of them. Vrebel ducked for waht little cover their was just as a dwarf nearby had his head caved in by one of the incoming missiles. The cries of the wounded filled the air around him. The attack had ground to a halt the enemy was amongst them now and the horde didnt care sending their boulders slamming into enemy and ally alike.

Not far away Griff had come to the realisation that they were sitting ducks where they were and ordered a retreat as he killed an orc that came out of a hole behind one of his dwarven soldiers and was about to stab him in the back. He swiped another boulder coming for him out of the air with a heavy clang as it struck his axe then bellowed at those around him to back up and re-establish the formation out of range of the boulders so they could deal with the enemy amongst them first.

Several frustrating hours later they force under Vrebel and Griff withdrew to base camp, finally managing to deal with all the enemy that had infiltrated their ranks and caused such chaos.

"We need a new plan," Vrebel said simply as they tended to the wounded and dying.

*Lance is watching over the rampart at the drills around, frowning and basically keeping the preparations done thru the city defenses, appearing as if still ready to resist a siege*

- Well , now we need to wait - *he looks upon the sky again, his mind goes into a silent praying, he man of faith jumped down to walk towards the tent.*

*He sits and study the map again, putting the places where every "camp" it may be located and watching and studying the incoming plans and movements, he is doing his part to keep the enemy believing that they are still getting worried for the siege, maybe this would help Jill and company to do a safe entry, just his prayers accompany the group*

In the Siphe Battlegroup, Daniella steps away from the others into the command tent.  She pulls a small stone from a pouch on her sword belt.  She sets her jaw and frowns, then speaks a command word and watches the stone awake with a soft glow.  Taking a deep breath, she starts the series of short relays.

"Commander Stargazer, this is Commander Stormhaven..."

- This is why we are figthing Lance, and if it was easy anyone could do it  - *the innervoice sound on his head, the voice of the long past teacher and the father figure he had -

“This is my armor. It guards my body from the blow of the enemies of His Light.”
Battle dawned upon them in the eerie light of fire arrows, torches, fires and the glow of the stones. He made sure his armor was fitting well, having it worn so long like almost a second skin, he had made some adjustments. Some more since he joined the Siphe Garra once more.
Most of the other soldiers were in a hurry, so he mumbled to himself: “As our faith in you guards our souls from the touch and taint of your enemies.”
The others were stationed with another group, assigned to reinforce the lines, they were spread so thin.
“With devotion I shall keep it in good shape.”
His voice was older now, had a clear and strong baritone.
“By training, reading and prayer we shall keep our minds and bodies strong.”
He made sure the grips and straps of his shield were in good shape. They were.
“No taint should fall upon it, and as I, it will always be ready.”

He checked his helmet.
“Do not idle.”
All good.
“My duty is to fight and to die. My life, Toran, I devote to you.
It shall be so.
This is my sword. It shall cut the veil of taint, treachery and darkness.”

Sacrifice was sharpened, the enchantment runes glowing with a blue-white light. It was not the kind of blade that needed to be anointed regularly. His voice was sure and not exactly quiet.
“We are the edge of His might.
I shall never let it dull or draw it in anger, hatred or fear.
We are the heralds of His light.
My sword is part of my body, and I will strike true and with precision. My blade, Toran, I devote to you.
It shall be so.”

He put his helmet on and reached for his shield. Order was to form ranks. With measured steps, William joined ranks with his section.
“As I commit my body to battle, I will guard my mind and soul with your Light.
So that no taint and treachery will befall us.
From the falsehood of illusions, Toran, deliver me
Your light rips the veil!
From the touch of corruption, Toran, deliver me
Your light burns the twisted!
From the shadow of doubt, Toran, deliver me
Your light illuminates the black!
I am a paladin of Toran
The herald of his Light!
I am the edge of his will
The bane of his foes!
I stand ready to fight in his name
And I know no fear!”

They came over the fortifications a bit too easily, a hissing, howling, shouting, roaring, growling pandemonium. There was a clash when they collided with the unit, and for a moment, the soldiers seemed hesitant, being nearly swept away.

“For Fiorez City and Toran!”

Strike and counterstrike. One of his shield straps broke in one of those attacks, and he had to fight without it. It made moving back and forth between different parts of the unit easier. He was running short on bandages and good willed words, so he eventually just gave the latter up. It made things easier.
He was thrown into the dust a few times, and got up one time over, doing his best to keep the enemy at bay, pushing them back one step after another. And where he was insecure in controlling Toran's Might before, burning through his heart and soul and blade, it just became a part of him now. He shouted challenges, he fought with his fists as well as his blade. He ducked away from spears, blades, hooks, claws, tentacles, relying on the Hand of Virtue to protect him. He never shouted his wrath in a yelling way that might appear unpleasant, just talked loud so everybody could hear.

“Give them no quarter! Close ranks! Kill them, kill them all! No fear, and no mercy! Toran is with us!”

It was a comforting thought that at least Toran's Chosen would see another day and carry on the legacy, if faith and Toran should so decide.

“See how they fear the light! None of these abominations will pass! Fight, proud sons and daughters of Fiorez!”

He was covered in the blood and grime, sweat and dust, but he never lost the aura of confidence, the intense stare that could be hateful for his enemies and understanding for the wounded.

“Stand strong! It is time for them to die!”

He lost many. Too many. And once the battle was over, and the weary and wounded left the battlefield, he took care of the fallen. Those that he could find, at least. He wrote the names in  his diary, multiple pages full. His own injuries were not so bad, and calm and with reverence he buried the men and women, or tended to their wounds. It took a long time to finish the task, and even when ordered by a commanding officer to rest, he could not. He took his diary and started to write after finishing only two letters.

Pain is weakness leaving the body, so the mental pain is just emotional weakness leaving the body.
I does not deserve my title lest I earn it, nor do I deserve my name until I prove to be worthy of it.

For certain is death for the born
And certain is birth for the dead;
Therefore over the inevitable
Thou shouldst not grieve.

From here, where should I go, my path covered in mist, doubt, resentment and contempt. Valor, Empathy, Conviction, Humility, Sacrifice, Honorable Combat, Restraint. Maybe I can explain these things, but no more to those I once was close to. I burned Raelyn's gift today, after having used it for a bandage. No use. The man died, he lost too much blood. I have to move on, have to pick myself up and not give attention to what they might or might not want from me. I couldn't sleep, it's cold, and Toran doesn't help against that. He's not a blanket, just a man that ascended to the Heavens. I carved the names of the dead into my armor, and it is black with ash and oil and blood. I might have lost direction, but I still can kill and remember the fallen. I can keep some alive, not all. It is not evil to like the rush of battle, to motivate to kill and to fill panic in the heart of the enemies of Toran with my righteous wrath. I know how the men and women look at me. The fear me, I think. I haven't spoken a word since the end of the battle, and I was ordered to take a rest.
But I cannot sleep, or I will dream again of a helmet shaped like a skull, a silver anhk carved into its forehead, my eyes under the helmet glowing red. My armor is black, black but for the silver ankh. By my deeds they know me, by my colors they fear me, and I am an angel of death. I have lost direction. Maybe I die soon. But not yet. Not yet. I feel no more pain inside, but loss for Raelyn, for the men we lost today. All things must pass. All I can do is to move on, and paint my armor black on the day the war engulfs and consumes us all. Can I life a life away from death, from fight? Away from steel and blood and ashes? I have no soul worth saving, but I know those who are, and thus my duty is set. Serve, teach, protect. And in War, my armor shall be black, and my helmet a skull, so my enemies and my allies know that death has touched me, but by my voice and deeds, by my wrath and discipline, my humbleness and carefulness, the flower of life shall bloom.
I consecrate myself to Toran, death and fight, so others must not step upon the same path.
This is the last gift I can offer those around me, and Jhon and Raelyn.
May my spirit find rest, Toran, if you grant me such blessing, at least for this night, so I am strong again tomorrow.

And the day after, and the day after...
He sat on the fire in front of his tent and could not sleep, edging names into his armor, silently, looking up occasionally, not finding rest until he is too tired to go on and hurts himself. Only then he allows himself to sleep a dreamless sleep, and begins his day with exercise that aims at being better then the others. Enduring more. His body was by now used to it.

I know I can do better than this...

After weeks of sifting through reports at camp, Daniella disappears for a time into her tent, seemingly thoroughly exhausted.

A few hours later, she emerges again looking rested and determined.

"I need to speak with Lord Siphe immediately.  And find me the Mercenary Steel.  Don't let him go anywhere until I've spoken with him.  If he's already left, track him down and bring him back."

Soon after, Daniella is seen meeting with Lord Siphe and the two have a brief discussion before Daniella heads off and calls two Toranite officers to help her pack up some supplies, obviously getting ready for a journey of some sort.

The following day, the Mercenary Steel is escorted with sentries to the camp and shown directly to Commander Stormhaven's tent where from time to time voices are raised during their conversation.  Afterwards, Daniella exits the tent, followed shortly after by the masked mercenary.  Neither of them seem to be in a good mood.

Daniella then joins with her two officers and the three of them set off on horseback into the mountains, leaving the rest of the Toranite forces at Camp Siphe under the command of Lord Jaedon Siphe until her return.

It seems by the time of Steel and Razeriem's arrival at Siphes Battlecamp rumours that the Lady Commander Daniella Stormhaven has left have circulated. Several of the Toranites stationed in various battlegroups are given a hard time with questions demanding why she had abandonded them at such a time. In the meantime Siphe is seen inspecting each battlegroups defensive positions, his measures are harsh if he is not pleased with what he sees.

Some of the men are heard making comments after his rounds that he does not appear to be himself of late.

However... several hours later Steel and Razeriem have been taken on a tour of the camp and its various defence structures. Raz, bored very quickly with the whole tour, instead heads to one of the fire giants glowing boulders to inspect that. It is here, just as the sun drops below the horizon that the warning of the attack comes first.

One minute Raz is joking with the two fire giant guards about what the boulder can do and the next a low thrumming sound is emmitted from the boulder and the red lines begin to glow a dull red. The giants swing into action, one charges off towards the closest guard tower while the other pulls covers off large stacks of boulders and spears.

Razeriem turns to gaze out over the rugged harshness of the Roughlands, the first spells on his lips. What he sees is a fog bank that spreads across the ground like a wave drawing closer and closer. Within its depths creatures move and surge forward.

The horns are sounded and Siphe Garra move to the defensive positions. Steel joining one particular section and casting a number of spells in preparation while trying to study the enemies approach to gain some measure of understanding of them.

The fog bank draws closer and surges up the ramparts in front of the defenses then grows higher and higher forming a solid wall of fog taller than the guard towers that seems to be trying to push forward. The dull red glow and low sound from the giants magical boulders grows and then there is a whump of sound and the shockwave hits the fog barrier causing it to dissipate. That done, it reveals hordes of clawed, toothed and fanged, winged and more types of unusual creatures not from Layonara. Interspersed with them are larger shadow like creatures with an odd draconic look about them.

Their protection gone they surge forward and into the waiting lines of the Siphe Garra. Brilliant explosions light up the night sky as Steel and Razeriem let loose, but these are short lived and before long Raz and Steel are forced to draw steel and engage with the enemy in hand to hand as their sheer weight of numbers overwhelms the defensive positions.

For long hours into the night the battle rages. Just after midnight the fighting pushed Steel and Razeriem together briefly, both weary, both bloody from numerous cuts and scraps but neither ready to give up the fight. Then the surge of the enemy pushes them apart again and once more they are fighting to save themselves and the lives of those around them.

In another section where Jaedon Siphes banner stands high above the battlefield the fighting is heaviest. The creatures seem intent on reaching the Sovereign Lord and ending his existence there and then. Siphe garra desperately throw their lives at the creatures assaulting them to defend their beloved leader. It seems that hundreds of the creatures perish for the loss of several Siphe garra, but its enough to slowly whittle down the defenders a few at a time. Even the Toranites, seen here and there go down under the onslaught and suddenly there is a breakthrough by the enemy and a massive surge pushes them through the Siphe Garra lines and into Siphes personal guards.

The Second and Third Ranked guards form a solid wall of steel against the surge into which steps Jaedon Siphe, his twin longblades dripping blood, and against all the force assaulting them, they advance. Swords whir in a swirling dance of death with Jaedon Siphes the deadliest. Any creature his weapons reach is killed instantly, each blow true. The best men and women the Siphe Garra have produced at his side and even they cannot match his speed, his grace and his deadly intensity.

In the face of incredible numbers they advance, cutting a deadly swathe through the enemies surge and then suddenly the attack falters. Reserve battle groups close in on the enemy flanks and collapse into them and the breach is closed. The Siphe Garra reform their ranks and hold their ground while the enemy recoils, adjusts and drives forward again.

Midmorning, the assaults intensity wanes but the enemy numbers do not. The Garra's third defensive lines are barely held. Steel struggles to raise his sword arm to fend off the claws and teeth and fangs of the creatures attacking them. Checking his pouch he notes the amount of healing potions he has gone through in the last few hours. Fresh Garra around him from battlegroups being rotated in and out of the battle give him a moments reprieve to flex cramping arm muscles. Suddenly out of the dimness of the battle Raz stumbles over to him out of breath and stands leaning on his rapier. His armour is coated in enemy blood and he shows signs of several nasty injuries that must have been recently healed by magic or potions. Raz notes that Steel is in much the same condition.

"Come with me to see the world huh? Have some fun you said!" Razeriem breathed in deeply trying to make the most of their moments respite.

Steels voice emerged amusedly from his dented and bloodied but all to familiar helm. "You were getting a little soft anyway."

"How much longer do you think they can keep this up?" Asked Razeriem.

"You mean how much longer can the Garra hold?"

"That too," replied Raz.

"According to Siphes plans he showed me when we got here if the enemy overrun this line everyone will fall back to a larger raving about ten miles inside the border and establish a new camp there. I saw a large creature pick up one of the fire giants glowing boulders an hour again and carry it off, I imagine the same has happened to the other one too. I think thats why the fog has returned, it seems to give the enemy strength. Siphe was right, we need to close that portal. It wouldnt matter how many forces he had, the enemy would eventually overwhelm him. Good note though, the Toranites seem to have some extra energy against the enemy, they would rather attack a Garra than a Toranite. For once in my life I think I'd be grateful to see a dozen divisions of Toranite infantry show up right about now."

Raz grinned at him through bloodied lips, "What? And spoil all our fun!"

"What was I thinking?" laughed Steel.  "Right, I'm rested, how about you?"

Raz straightened, "I was waiting for you old man."

Together they moved into the nearest line of fighting and renewed their assault.

An hour before dawn the sky began to lighten marginally the fog bank had thickened and moved right up to the back of the enemy forces seemingly giving them an endless supply of fortitude.

Runners appeared at Jaedon Siphes banner and the Sovereign Lord withdrew from yet another enemy surge at his position to speak with them.

"My Lord," said the Eight Rank runner. "Second Rank Kerin, Ashew and Kurn are overrun and their battlegroups wiped out or scattered amongst the enemy host, we've lost another four battlegroups over on the northern wing and the enemy hold the third line. If we dont move soon they are going to surround us.

Jaedon merely nodded, "Signal the retreat, we reassemble at Corral Ravine, send word to Camp Oaxsama that we have moved to the secondary staging site." As the runners nodded and raced off Jaedon sheathed his swords and stood face towards the Orsgaunt mountains for several moments. By he time he was done horns were sounding the retreat and the Garra, tired, exhausted, noses bloodied, remembered their training and formed small, highly mobile defensive units and left the battlefield to the enemy.

Jaedon Siphe moved to a large rock and quickly climbed it to get a better viewpoint. All he could see to the south was a fogbank filled with the enemy. Everywhere he looked to the left and right of him his people fought to disengage from the enemy. Something had to be done or many would die as they retreated. Jaedon once again looked skyward and this time he nodded slowly. Coming in low from the east, several dark shapes barely visible in the slowing rising light of the sun.

They started at the enemy line furthest east, Ractrafiorez came first unleashing torrents of fire onto the enemy forces, incinerating anything his breath touched. The other smaller shapes, themselves huge fire drakes added their fire and targeted the larger creatures with their deadly claws.

By the time Ractrafiorez reached Siphes position the enemy were falling back into the cover of the fogbank. Still he continued with the fire drakes until the Siphe Garra and their Toranite allies could break free and head north towards their next staging point. As they finished their straffing run the fog bank nearst them suddenly formed a long tendril like arm that reached out for the mighty dragon, instead it missed and latched onto one of the fire drakes and dragged it screaming into the fog bank where its screams abruptly ended.

As Ractrafiorez and the remaining Drakes climbed higher into the air and away from the fog bank Jaedon leapt down from the rock he had been standing on to his personal guard and turned his back on the enemy to move north.

****************************************************

Unbekownst to Jaedon Siphe, the same sort of battle was being fought further east by those at Camp Oaxsama, except there, the order to retreat had been given just after midnight by First Rank Nijau.

****************************************************

As daylight rose over both battlefields a huge fogbank extended along the south eastern edge of the Siphe Principality. Shadrixkayl's forces having taken the defensive positions and began removing the fire giants stones they had captured.

Long columns of weary Siphe Garra and their Toranite allies wended their way through the dusty paths of the Roughlands to where they would establish new camps and prepare once again to face the enemy.

The one good piece of news that Jaedon Siphe received on arriving at the new camp was that fifteen hundred Toranite heavy cavalry, many of them members of the Shining Hand, from Hilm castle were at the western border post asking permission to enter Principality lands and join the battle. They brought with them another 2500 Hilmite pikemen as well. An order that by this stage, Jaedon was pleased to give.

Far to the south, even as the Siphe Garra retreated from their border positions the amies of Hilm faced another problem.

"Day beh temptin us, dey want teh foight an Oim 'appy teh give it to em," growled an angry Griff. Him and three other Red Axes faced Vrebel and one of the Hilm Cavalry's Field Commanders.

Vrebel sighed, "I know Major, I want to as well but we'll lose too many in saving the few. They want us to go out there and get massacred. I cant believe Im saying this but the Field Commander is right, its literally suicide."

"Bah, you're turnin into a soft headed pansy lad." Griff made a fist and showed it to Vrebel. "Deh can't do this, those scum of the earth need teh beh taught a lesson."

Frustrated himself Vrebel raised his voice, "Right, I know, just tell me where we can get another fifteen or twenty thousand soldiers and I'll lead the charge myself and we'll wipe them all out. Or are you telling me you can handle thirty odd thousand of the enemy by yourself?"

Griff grumbled and tugged at his beard angrily. "Well we nay beh sittin round dis place much longer. Well go after dem cultists ifn we ave teh alone."

The argument took place at the top of a bluff overlooking the series of ravines around the Dry Gorge that the Horde from the Orsgaunt mountains had taken over. An open space lay well behind enemy lines and in it many of the captives from over a week ago had been pegged out on the ground and left to die of exposure in the burning sun of the Roughlands. It was a deliberatly provocative gesture by the Orchish leaders of the Horde. Every day just on midday a half orc dressed in shamans robes and bearing a symbol of Grand would emerge and examine the bodies before turning his gaze to where he knew the allies forces would be watching him as if challenging them to come and stop him.

Even with the ten thousand soldiers arriving from Briardusk a few days earlier they had nowhere near enough numbers to mount a rescue.

"Hey, Willy, I heard your Commander left the place!"

William shrugged. "You need her to hold you hand or something because of these abdominations crawling around and hiding from our wrath and light?"

And hours later, he wishes he had the same amount of experience in combat than the Chosen One had. Either way.
He fought the best he could, with what he had, and tried to keep as much soldiers alive as possible. Lacking the blessings a cleric could give, many died regardless, and their names found their way into his book and onto his armor.

When it was time to retreat, he noticed that they had lost quite a lot of people, and wondered if it was even possible to bring the regiments back to old strength within one generation - humans did not grow on trees or were summoned by dark magics. And they had to be trained as well.

*Vrebel scans with his looking glass down at the captives that are being strung out in the mid day sun and then to the cave were the others are being kept.  He examines the mountain were the captives are being kept  and closes his viewing lense.*

I can't let them suffer like this.  *He turns to one of the scouts of Jil who led them to their vantage point.  Find Jil and lets see if we can find another way into that mountain were the cave is.  Take a few dwarves who are good at digging *he thinks* preferably ones who have knowledge of this area and who are light of feet.  Look for a weak spot were we can dig our way inside.  Maybe we can tunnel under and bring the captives out the back side.  Oh and run my crazy idea by Commander Stargazer if you see him or I'll tell him myself when I get back inta camp.

*He sends off the scout and turns to the Field commander, Griff and the other red axes.*  Risky I know, but if we can find a place to start diggin' I may need a diversion.  *He pats Griff on his armoured shoulder*  Keep yer axes sharp and yer wits intact you may get your chance to cleave some orc just yet.

Almost all of the caves around here are filled with all kinds of horrid things like what we have already faced.  Scouting them will be much more dangerous than scouting the surface.  Not only that it will take alot more time than I believe the prisoners have.  We have no idea what tunnels or caves stretch out to where, whats in them, the many dead ends ... I am not sure that its a good idea.   But as you said, lets run it by Lance and get his take on it.

I agree Jil its a long shot but maybe there is a way.  I'd like to slice that half orc's grin off his face and feed it to the dogs every time he looks my way.  Thank you for yer lookin' into it.  None of this is goin to be easy.

Lets here from the commander and in the mean time if you think of a way to help them I'm all ears.

*Vrebel llifts off his half plate armour and tosses it to the ground.  Once inside his tent he starts rumaging through various maps of the area.*

Daniella and her two Toranite companions return and pass along an item that looks like a torch to the Mercenary, Steel, and then heads immediately back to the front lines.

Several weeks pass during which time the Siphe Garra are once again beset by the forces of Shadrixkayl. Their relentless assaults come every night. The reinforcement by the Hilmite soldiers was good, the insertion of the additional members of the Shining Hand literally a godsend. Their power and skill in defeating the enemies facing them a huge bonus for the Siphe garra ranks.

Even so, their numbers were not enough to hold back the power of Shadrixkayls forces. Slowly but surely Jaedon Siphe and his beloved Garra were forced further and further back towards their mighty fort that as yet remained largely incomplete since the last battles fought to claim it.

Even the arrival of Lady Daniella Stormhaven a week into the fighting was not enough to stop the advance of the enemy, however, her glowing sword and bright nimbus whenever the enemy attacked at night became a rallying factor for the Toranites and the Garra alike and the Garra could not help but admit that without her guidance and her tempering of their Lord Commanders growing ill temper they would have been overrun far sooner and the Principality lost.

The Fire giants had taken their losses as well but a steady stream of reinforcements from the mountains had ensured they kept up their numbers.

By the end of the third week another division of Toranites arrived from Hilm and were promptly dispatched to Camp Oaxsama who were struggling to hold ground. More Hilmite soldiers also arrived in that week. Sir Lance and Lord Karlgarl together making the request for Hilm to support the Principality before Lord Alexander agreed.

And in all that time there was still no word from those who journeyed into the realms of the Pits in order to find a way to stop Shadrixkayls growing power. Hope was fading amongst the Garra, their beloved Lord was changing the longer he remained under Ractrafiorez's direct influence, the lands they had fought had to take were now being slowly stripped from them and soon their families would be threatened as well.

By the end of the fourth week the front lines of the Garra were within sight of the only partially reconstructed southern wall of Castle Siphe, the one Ractrafiorez tore to pieces during the war to capture the fort. Ironic now that the massive dragon fought alongside the same people to defend it. it was at this time that a strange event took place.

A battlegroup under the command of Third Rank Breemar found itself separated from the main bulk of the Garra during a clash with Shadrixkayls forces. Isolated and cut off the group formed a back to back stance and tried to move through the enemy back to the main Garra lines but found themselves unable to do so and were being slowly whittled away by the enemy surrounding them.

In the Garra lines a unit of Ninth nearest the isolated battlegroup, having lost their own leader formed together and initiated a brave drive to try and open a path for the battlegroup. One of their number, none other than Lady Eliza Karlgarl led the way and when others nearby saw what she was doing and why more joined them and the battlegroup were soon able to rejoin the main host and the fighting resumed. Third Rank Breamar, recognising the bravery of the small group and the leadership of the Lady Eliza gave her a field promotion on the spot to the Seventh and put her officially in charge of the unit she had led. Those with her were promoted to the Eighth.

Other stories of bravery filtered through also during the days of fighting but none as spectacular as the services the Dark Guards performed when they finally joined the Garra at Camp Oaxsama. Rumours after the fighting circulated that First Rank Nijau himself had left Camp Oaxsama when the fighting was in sight of the castles walls and ridden hard to Castle Siphe to confront Phalanx General Ni'tok directly and ordering him to send his Dark Guards South to enter the confrontation. Words must have been spoken but it was Nijau that won the battle and he returned to Camp Oaxsama with the entire regiment of the Dark Guards, General Ni'tok and the Princess Shey'kar, herself of the Ninth rank but having excluded herself from fighting with the Battlegroup she had been assigned too.

When the Dark Guards, the elite of the Nesarian cavalry, had charged into the enemy they ploughed a furrow deep into the enemy ranks. General Ni'tok had shown how he had the reputation of one of the best demon hunters in Belinara when he engaged with the enemy. None seemed able to touch him atop his huge black warhorse and he had killed any who came near him, bellowing constantly at the top of his voice and relishing in the pleasure of killing. Shey'kar had been no less formidable fighting close by the General's sides during most of the conflict, her skills with a blade impressive. The Dark Guards proved their worth and for several days Camp Oaxsama held ground over the enemy.

Then, as the enemy was within sight of the buildings of Fiorez City, of the walls of the Castle, of the barren but ploughed fields beyond those it all changed.

The fog bank that had so far protected and provided sustenance to the forces of Shadrixkayl suddenly thinned and the enemies attack faltered, they began to fall back under cover of the night and the combined defending forces were happy to let them do so. As commanders gathered to discuss the sudden fortune many began to think that just maybe Steel's mercenaries had been successful in their mission.

There were no further attacks over the next week and the forces had a chance to recoup, regain strength and to dig proper defences. Then word arrived that Steel, Razeriem and the mercenary forces had returned to the Castle and the word was that they had suffered heavy losses but succeeded in closing the portal sustaining Shadrixkayls power and providing him with a seemingly endless supply of soldiers to use in the fighting. The news was well received by all the defenders, even mroe so the news that many of the mercenaries that returned with Steel would join in the push to drive back Shadrixkayls forces.

But even with the loss of the portals power Shadrixkayls forces did eventually strike again, however this time the Garra and their allies managed to hold and even to gain some ground. The fighting ground to a halt several days later as the Garra retook the positions about 10 miles inside their original borders.

It was then word arrived that things had been happening in the south that were about to impact on the north. The fighting far from done the Garra and their allies dug in to await what was to come.

As a weary band of Pit travellers returns lighter of soul strands, Arfur Dumas, Ilsarian, does what he does best and puts his heart to song, that perhaps one with more skill like Andrew might sing to lift this mixed and masked procession that for whatever personal reason, done good.

 Triple S you're a one make a big noise
Playin' in the Pits gonna be a big mask some day
 You gotta shut that gate
 You big hiddin'face
leadin' your masks all over the place

We will we will close you
We will we will close you

TripleS you're a young one hard one
Shoutin' in the Mozad gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo' face
 You big hiddin'face
Wavin' your banner all over the place

We will we will close you
We will we will close you

William took a sip from his canteen and realized that he had no place to go but to be here. Nothing really to go home to, and his usefulness here was limited. Because you don't have the guts to take command. As if that was the only thing that mattered. He wanted to imbue fury into the soldiers he was fighting with, fearlessness, a sense of unyielding, uncompromising courage. The most important quality, to be found here in abundance. He should have focused on learning lore and blessings, be a healer. But only the dead follow me, and only the men that came to terms with death will follow me. Ha!
He smiled a grim and somber smile. Dead and death...no lack of that here, either.

It was then that he realized that he had to become more vicious and smart, and that he his still stood, no matter his anger and wrath, and the burded of memories and names carved into metal and painted in ink. No sense of pride in that. He was alive, so he would continue to fight, even if in the end, other got the glory, fame, riches, medals, all that.
I do care about that, still. But I don't want to. I am made for war, fighting and death, so others must not to.

The moment was over. Time to return to his duties.

*Lance can't help to show his joy once the mist start to move back , he present the troops with the order to be ready to do the counterattacks when deemed right . in the mean time he awaits for the events on his own side, has been long since the group led by Vrebel and Griff alongside his faithful scout Commander Jill went into the rescue mission, with that in mind he awaits, in the mean time he calls the scouts in order to study the position and borderlines of the enemy camp,*

Thank Toran for this blessing. We'll march soon. *musses to himself *

*And yet he awaits for the report and does a small prayer for the success of the mission *

// Just need to confirm if the group is heading back to Sundance or staying camping near the enemy.  If they come back then i'll reply for their remarks.

Full bloody circle.  He's standing on the south wall, where just, what - two years ago? - he tossed down a rope and sang invisibility to help a defender against Siphe's forces climb to safety.  Fort Hope's walls are only partially rebuilt, and some of the damage he remembers all too well.  He spent a lot of time up here, firing arrows, singing, offering lifelines.  Ducking rocks.  To his right and down a few lengths, the very spot where one of the net-throwers had entangled drakes.  To his left, a chunk of wall bearing Racta's distinctive claw damage.

And behind him, inside the fort, the army he had then fought to hold back.  The victors.  His enemy.  He is here to sing for them now, against the new army they fight to hold back - the new enemy.  Same garbage, different day.

Bloody dragons.

Maybe he's not supposed to be up here.  Rules, rules, rules.  Fort of Siphe's Hope is not what it was.  Before there was song, Gel's, his, others.  There was an esprit de corps.  Now there are bodies in cages and a red-armored man who scowls and has a real jerk for a first officer, at least by what he's heard in the very little time since they returned from Mozad.  Oh, Muse, Mozad...I will see you again if I have to get on my hands and knees and beg Connor for a ride.

Footsteps.  He can't blend into anything, there are no shadows.  Lights everywhere.  Fine, he belongs up here.  If you can't hide, bluff.  And when that's done, sing.  These people need song.  If he's going to be a dragon's pawn, he's going to be a loud one.

There is a group down there, ninth, eighth, third, whatever.  The promotion system does have the benefit of simplicity at least.  They're on a rare break and he's got a new song plus Arfur's.  A long breath...not the enemy anymore, not the enemy anymore, not the enemy...and he climbs down rebuilt stairs to try and raise spirits.  Of these soldiers who are Not His Enemy.

It's still Fort Hope to him though.

"A song short and sweet of battle and pain
A suicide mission for us lacking in sane
The mist and the monsters have come for a war
The Blue Man and Elf have something in store

"Oh, yeah they do.  And it’s a doozy.

"A lantern that glows with a mystical light
Will shut down the source of those creatures of night
From Storm’s Haven to merc the handoff is made
We leave on our mission right after the trade

"Next time I’m taking a boat.

"A ride off of this world which is really the Pits
Rough on the stomach, we’re tossing up bits
Not once and not twice but three time’s the charm
By the time we arrived I thought I’d bought the farm

"Don’t eat before you go is all I have to say.

"The odds were quite bad when our feet hit the dirt
Swarms of fiends looking for something to hurt
They can’t be worse that the traveling there
We dragged ourselves up and went on a tear

"Lost a few, but they lost more!

"Shadows to left and shadows to right
Shadows that stay at the edge of your sight
We rattled their teeth and shattered their bones
With metal and magic and arrows and stones

"Without that mist?  Easy pickings.

"The portal was huge and quite hard to miss
A beacon lighting up that entire abyss
On the top of a mount behind a writhing mass
Of shadow-spawn creatures we had to get past

"You know what they say at times like this, folks?  Giddyup.

"We waded on in and fought back to back
Trying to survive each fresh attack
We cut our way through at least thousands, plus ten
And finally got to the magic, and then

"Well, the Blue Guy stuck his hand right on in, lantern and all.  Hurt.  A lot.

"Rumbles and shaking and we all went uh-oh
The mountain was shaking and ready to blow
No one had time to make good an escape
Which is why we all ended up in bad shape

"How bad?  Keep listening.

"The portal went BOOM and most of us died
I still have bits of Steel stuck in my hide
Four of our number was all that remained
Standing and even they were pretty maimed

"We got it together and raised up our dead
Before they could regroup well, we pretty much fled
Came back to here and now I’m in this room
And that’s our whole story from beginning, to boom!"

// For those in the south, a quick recap of their situation as I think there are a few crossed wires.

1/ There are now approximately fifteen thousand mixed Hilm/Toran soldiers in Sundance that have built defences for the city, they are led by Sir Lance.

2/ Several days north of Sundance Vrebel and Griff have a smaller secondary force (2000 dwarves, 1500 Cavalry, 2500 Hilmite soldiers) that tried to break the prisoners free and found the enemy numbers just too vast.

3/ North of them, nestled neatly along the edge of the Dry Gorge is over fifty thousand creatures led by the Chief Warleader Argemek and the strange half orc shaman of Grand that had delighted in teasing Vrebels host by torturing the captives.

4/ The captives are not in caves. They are staked out on the ground in the middle of the enemy host on a flat piece of ground.

5/ A days march to the west of the enemy horde is another camp, this time made up of Shadrixkayl worshippers, they number a few thousand. The horde appears content to sit and wait. They are not threatening to move south towards Sundance or Vrebels force in any way.

6/ About a weeks forced march north of the Horde is the southernmost edge of the fog bank that protects Shaddy's forces. It used to reach halfway to the Horde but now does not.

7/ The fog bank extends to the borders of the Siphe Principality.

8/ 10 miles inside the border the Siphe Garra and their Toranite allies prepare to push south Shadrixkayls forces back to their border.

//Hopefully that clarifies things for people.

// In the north new faces appeared amidst the Siphe Garra ranks as those who joined Steel to travel the Pits recovered enough to participate in engaging with Shadrixkayls forces near the Principality border. Huntsmistress Jil having transfered from Sundance to join Steels mission decided her skills were better served in the north and with her decision other scouts joined her, Sehky, Ferritt, and even a Wolfswood ranger, Aden. The famous bard Andrew Reid also lent his voice to the affair at Siphes main battlelines, as did mercaneries like Jetta Ravenlock and Arfur Dumas. Even famous Captain of the Beacons, Argali Trueaxe joined with Lady Commander Daniella Stormhaven on the front lines. Of Steel and Razeriem, little was seen, Steel had suffered a heavy injury in the battle to close the portal, and being Al'noth related, Razeriem was doing what he could to try and repair the injury that had rendered Steel's arm completely useless depsite its apparent health.  The final addition to the Siphe Garra ranks in the Principality was the arrival of Knight of the Wyrm Captain Gabrielle Millison with a thousand Rofireinite Cavalry from Hilm Castle. Not content to sit and let their Toranite brothers face Shadrixkayl alone the Knight Captain had decided to do something about it and rallied tose at Hilm Castle and brought them south to the Principality.

// In the week prior to this stage of the war in the North things were happening in the south.

Tired of waiting, Major Griff, true to his word broke camp early one morning and led his Voraxians westwards before angling north. His intention being to attack the Shadrixkayl cultists camp. Upon arrival however he found the camp barely attended and after a short, bloody battle the token force left in the camp had been wiped out and the camp taken. In searching the camp Griff discovered a hole that had been dug under cover of one of the tents by the Shadrixkayl cultists. The hole led to a series of extensive caves and tunnels under the surface of the Roughlands. Figuring them to be old demon tunnels Griff led his Voraxians into the tunnels.

No further word was heard of from Griffs force except a scout who returned to Vrebels position to reveal what they had found and what Griff's intentions had been.

With some of his best scouts now in the North with Siphes forces Vrebel made plans to go and join Griff, uon hearing what he had found, and leave the force overseeing the Horde under the command of the Hilmite Field Commander. Just as he gathered his pack and several veteran soldiers, including Captain Kromlek, who had a arrived mere hours before to lend a hand, dozens of horns sounded in the Hordes ranks. Cursing softly Vrebel and many others raced to the edge of their camp to watch as the Horde slowly and inexorably began to pack up camp and head northwards.

Vrebel was torn...to go and find Griffs dwarves in the demon tunnels underneath the Roughlands, or take his force north and harry the backside of the Horde. In the meantime he sent runners as fast as possible south to inform Sir Lance of the latest developments.
Title: ~ Good morning Fiorez City! ~
Post by: Aphel on September 25, 2012, 06:35:38 pm
There was something beautiful to this place. It had seen many battles, and as far as he could tell, Andrew has his troubles with it. Bad memories, fighting against the people they now should help. The hardened bunch of warriors, grim, somber. But they had a certain attitude that reminded him of those of the pack. Good in some ways, bad in others.

After rising early -- it was easy to get some rest without a child waking you in the night, morning, or whichever time his son required his parents, in some aspect Kyreth was worse than Midnight when hungry -- he noticed the sun going up on the horizon. So he washed the dust from his face, made sure the blisters on his feet were healing properly -- a nuisance he had known from before the rangers, now, after his time in training there, he felt like going on message runs cross-country just for fun.

They were given quarters in an old, partly reconstructed storage building, maybe a warehouse.  There were exactly three different things Aden found out on the first day here. First, there was another member living in their modest place, and it was called rules. They wrote them with chalk to the walls, and it covered nearly their whole entry area. He supposed they had to wash them down at some point when cleaning the building -- there was a whole paragraph for that, typical military -- and write them back up.

He also noticed that due to the unfinished state of rebuilding, it was very easy to get from one floor to the next nearly undetected from the outside, which was nice for assassins and such people. Weren't there those...he had a lot of elvish words for them, none very modest, but the very presence of the Dark Guard or how they called their bunch was sufficient to ponder how fast he could exit the building carrying a poisoned man and having a bolt in the side himself. Was good to have all the Toranites around. He maybe could slip them messages, before bad things happened. Needed to know who was best recipient, tho. That could be difficult. Jill maybe. If she remembered him.

And the third and last thing was his secret, one he intended to keep unlike the second one, which he gave away early, voicing his concerns on the security here.
The third was that it was simple to get on the roof of the building and enjoy the sunrise without being seen and shouted (or shot) at by the guards. So many roofs, so many places he could climb up and sit there like one of those gargoyles, enjoying the view over the city at dawn or dusk. Oh well. Maybe he would tell Andrew or Sehky, maybe they wanted to paint a sunrise over the roughlands. Such colors! He envied the poor guards of the morning shift, on the other hand, they were surely already sick of it. He wondered about the tune of this place, of its light and shadow. They were building a small shrine to the Hand of Virtue nearby, and Aden offered his hand there. Got a grumpy reply, but they let him help. Which was good for training and for thinking. Colored glass. Hm. Maybe he could ask his fellow Angels to make a window.
Or, at least help with a small memorial for all the Fallen, a memorial against all these wars. If there was a way to prevent them, Steel had the right idea. Mostly.

Now he needed to learn how to make the Roughland his ally. Clothes, torn, of the right color. Wouldn't be to hot, either. He needed to give it a try.

Visit Miss Trueaxe, too.
And Steel. Needed to find out what the enemy was capable of. Demons weren't his day to day enemies to sneak around, and he had to know their senses, their abilities.

He made tea with herbs from the Wolfswood and other places, if served hot, very soothing to the throat. If cold it could be used to see if somebody was dead or not -- if no flinching or comment in regards of the taste was made, you had either a very polite Hempstead oligarch in front of you or a undead. Or a monk. Monks were tricky.

"Tea!" He announced when Arfur and Andrew returned from stage. He was grinning. "Also, kittens!"
He had found a injured cat nearly drowned in a gutter together with her litter. Tail was gone, front left leg paw broken. Litter strong, after taking care of mother and feeding her. Small ones, cute and clumsy. Good for morale. And mother would hunt mice in order to keep her kittens fed, once the wounds were healed.

He didn't tell them that the bandage was mostly fake, and that all it took was to focus on ... stuff to get a weird glow about his hands. Injuries gone. Lucky cat, but confused Aden. He thought he was unable to weave or call upon the weave. He was sure by now that he hadn't checked the paw right, and that it was only a small cut. No bones broken. But how? Cats weren't exactly resilient to kicks and cuts and things, and the poor thing had looked quite bad. Maybe a rat instead of a human?

He wanted to make a glass window now. Well. And those flowers, but no idea how to make those either. Some work he could do while thinking about...stuff.

"Tea and kittens?"  A grin and he takes the cup with a nod and a warm smile - well, a cold smile, the air feels chilly, but he anticipates warmth in the wisps of steam that carry a clean herbal scent to his nose.  There is a scraping behind him; the "stage" is a collection of empty crates covered over with wood slats and as soon as his boots leave it it's being scavenged for other uses.  In truth he's surprised they let it be built at all.

But, some morale boosting, always good.  And now some morale for him.  Kittens - he likes them.  Playtime!

Arfur follows in the wake of Andrew, looking important, and trying to bask in some reflected glory and generally avoid any real work needing done nearby.

"Kittens eh got to love them ..couldn't eat a whole one though!"

Eventually noticing Andrew seems quite ernest about the kitten playtime thing he produces a belated smile

"Just joking of course. I mean war and famine would never ...make me that hungry..no no..aw look at the lovely little cat...meeaaw."

He unashamedly hangs in there as there seems to be too many harder tasks going on round about.

*Lance takes the note and frowns , after dismising the runner for a well deserved rest his eyes goes back to the map *

For goodness sake , Griff.  - *he looks frustrated towards the campsite, counting amoung the troops and the map he re draws where the fog may be, and the proper ways to handle this. he looks upon the small red piece representing Griff unit and move the piece towards where the dwarf moved*

*He sighs at the situation and calls upon one of his lieutenients*

I want to know what exactly this people are up to *gesturing the cultist of the shadow dragon that is near* They may be just a diversion for our troops, but i want to know exactly waht they are doing, their defenses, and exactly why is that they haven't moved.

*Then calls to the runner as he pens a reply* Take this to Sir Vrebel in the front. We need to refocus our efforts.

**he then moves aside towards one tent and again pulls out a blue stone that lightens as the thought and the code is spoken *

Sister.. . Its  Lance. . . . .

*From the bluff he watches with his looking glass as the horde slowly moves northward.  A quick nod to the newly arrived Captain Kromlek*

Nice ta have ya here Captain Kromlek.  Looks like their pullin' out to the north still.  Somethin's changed with the mist storm.  Major Griff needs to know about this.

*He whistles over to the scout from Griff's party that relayed Griff's position from before*

Take ten elite soldiers from the Hilmite division and send word to Major Griff in the tunnels that the horde is on the move northward.  Tell him we need him to come back topside as soon as he can unless he's found something better to do with his time.  *He shews him off* Get goin' double time!

*He reads Lances letter and frowns reciting the key parts*  "Stay idle till further orders" *a head shake*  How can I stay idle when we got thier backsides to us now?

*Just then a scout approaches with a grim look on his face*

Sir as you asked we've recovered the captives bodies down in the gorge.  None survived.  The ones who didnt die of sun exposure had their throats slit.  A message was left on one of thier bodies.

*The scout hands over the blood stain note.  Vrebel shakes his head reading it aloud for those around him to hear:

"Dont act against us, we have more prisoners who will suffer if you do."

*He sighs and turns to Captian Kromlek*

Captain Kromlek please see that the prisoners recieve proper burials and have their respective faiths say some words over em'

*Vrebel mutters to himself* Were did all my scouts go off too.

Alright *He calls for his fastest scout left*

Send word to Commander Stargazer that we have movement from the Horde to the north.  Tell him the shadow mist seems to have changed too.  I've sent word to Major Griff to return to our camp unless he finds something more important to divert his forces.  Inform the Commander were holding but once the dwarves return it wont last long.  Take the fastest horse you have and make haste man.

*He returns his gaze to the Horde moving slowly to the North and then to the mist that seems to have receded for some unknown reason.*

Daniella looks at her stone, then moves into a tent.  After a few moments she comes back and approaches the increasingly terse and irritable Lord Siphe.

"Commander Stargazer has located some of our captive soldiers.  The horde is moving north, it seems, and into a gorge.  There is a small group trying to rescue the prisoners.  If we move now we can meet them to strike at them from both sides."  She looks over Siphe to try to gauge his ever-declining mood.  "It's a good plan, but we need to make sure we aren't leaving ourselves open here either.  If we get word to Oaxsama Battleforce, we might be able to bolster their force with some of ours and have them hold the line here while we move up to intercept the Hilm forces."

She pauses.  "Stargazer is waiting on our reply."

Kromlek nods to Vrebel, "Aye der lad, Oi'll see teh it. Ifn yeah beh askin meh, Oi'd say dat Lance fellah beh acting cautious loike. Dem orcs goin teh kill dem prisoners nay matter what. Oi say we go an give em a good swift kick up deh backsiode as dey leave. Make em sorry dey turned der nose up at us an think dey can simply walk away. But dats just meh." He spat onto the dirt covered ground.

He looked around at the several thousand soldiers camped in the low mounds nearby.

"Oi reckon too dat ifn yeah said you was goin teh do dat, most of dese folks beh wit yea. Oi know Oi would beh."

He walked away with a shovel over one shoulder and his murderous axe over his other.

"Maybe oi'll rename meh axe teh Orcsplitter and go after em meself!" Is the last thing Vrebel hears before he is out of range.

After arriving at the front lines and seeing the cavalry under her command billeted and the horses cared for Gabby arrives at Lady Daniella's command tent and speaks with the Toranite guards outside.

"I'm sure the Lady Commander is pretty busy right now but could you let her know please that the Rofireinites have arrived to join with their brothers and sisters in arms against the threat here? I tried to see the Sovereign Lord but his people told me I was to report to the Lady Commander instead. So, here I am." She smiles in her pleasant manner. "I can wait if you like, or come back later when the Commander is available?"

The Toranite guards nod at her and head into the tent. She looks around at the ordered confusion of the army camp and sighs. "It seems all we've done for the last twenty years is travel from one continent to another to deal with threats such as this. Is there no end to this chaos?" She glances skywards for a moment as if asking her question of Rofirein directly.

Daniella steps out of the tent and looks over Captain Millison.  "Captain, I understand you've come with the Rofireinite troops.  Thank you for coming.  I don't believe I've seen you since the last time we held off this region against the enemies.  It's good to see you again."  She introduces her to two officers, one in Toran blue, the other with a Siphe Garra insignia on his shoulder marking him as a Third Rank officer.  "This is Major Jonas Surrey and Third Rank Ahrak.  If you'll go with them they will debrief you on our operations so far and where we'll be able to incorporate your forces."  A grim smile before she heads off.  "Welcome to the Siphe Battleforce.  At least with your dragon benefactor, I know what to expect."

Gabby gives an uncertain smile back and then salutes Daniella. "We'll do our best Lady Commander, we figured you could use a bit of Gold to offset all that red." She hesitates a moment then adds.

"If I may lady Commander, you should know that Lord Alexander didnt stop us, but certainly made it clear he was not happy that we were coming here. But, the men and women with me are totally committed to supporting our Toranite allies in this fight, I know there aren't many of us, but we'll fight with claw, tooth and steel to help win this with you."

She turned and headed off to where her people were waiting for her.

*Griff and his Voraxians make their way carefully but quickly through the tunnels that the Shaddisites had been seen using.  The tunnels stretch far and ever winding.  After closing out several possible routes within the tunnels they reach something interesting...a huge underground cavern.  The cavern lies some 20 miles north of where the Shaddisites were seen.  The cavern roof is thin and very close to the surface, and lies directly below a narrow pass that the Allied forces would most surely have travelled if they were to pursue the Horde going North.

Griff looks to the roof of the cavern and catches a reflection from his torch*

"Aye der, scouts dat roof beh shin'n back at meh.  What ye tink some fresh chip'n off it ye reckon?  Go have a look n beh careful of a cave-in.  Report tah meh at once"

*The scouts report back, that sure enough, the roof had been chipped away so that the roof was even thinner now.  It was clear that this was a trap lying in wait for the Allied forces to trudge over and fall to their deaths when the roof broke under their weight.*

"Fan out n small groups.  Get up in des small tunnels 'er n der.  Let's see if maybe ders still some bassards deh left tah pounce once ours beh fall'n in.  High alert on des sweeps n full battle wards.  Vorax beh wit us cuz Oi smell a rat."

*With that Griff ordered several Captains to take small groups into the nearby smaller tunnels that broke off the large cavern.  Soon after the dwarven battle shouts were heard.  Griff and his Voraxians 2000 strong were now in several bloody mini-battles against a force of hobgoblins twice his numbers.  The battles were fierce up front, but tunnel fighting is what dwarves do best.  These were trained Voraxian Red Axes and their morale could not have been higher as they pursed their despised enemy of Grand.  The dwarves formed strong front lines and caught the hobgoblins a bit by surprise.  The goblins got run over in the narrow tunnels by the sturdy dwarven legs pushing their tightly formed shields and axes forward.  Replacements were made when need be.  Quarter was neither asked nor offered and the hobgoblins perished to the final beast.  Casualties were had by the dwarves, but the battle was theirs.*

*After clearing his tunnel, Griff returned back to the cavern and re-assembled his warriors after all the tunnels were cleared.  Griff's removed his bloodied helm, which left his neck and eyesockets still painted red.  He looked upon all his battle-tested kin as he put a boot up on a rock and leaned to rest his weight*

"Aye yeh done foine battle 'ere today kin.  Some foine fight'n up front specially.  Dis 'ere war gon'a beh won by deh axes n hearts a us Voraxian's.  Red Axes Up!  Praise Vorax!  *with that a resounding loud echo by all the Voraxians as they raised their axes* 'Red Axes Up!  Praise Vorax'

"Aye dat.  Now den, scouts Oi want dis place searched for letters, messages or any such dumb tings des bassards moighta lef' behoind.  Den Oi wan' all us topsoide n Oi wana cave dis sucker in.  Get deh wounded patched up n seen by our 'ealers.  Den weh got'a get word tah our Sundance battle group."

*The cavern and tunnel areas were thouroughly searched and all evidence or items collected.  The cavern roof was carefully collapsed by the dwarves with the help of some Battle Priests and carefully placed boulders adding weight to the cavern roof.  With the cavern roof caved in, there was still plenty of room on the sides of the crater to get by.

Soon after Vrebel's 10 elite Hilmite soldiers arrived to the area of the cave in.  Griff welcomed them in and gave them food and drink.  He explained to them what had happened and that Griff and his Red Axes were going to make camp at the crater.  He sent them back to Vrebel to tell what had happened here and with instructions that the Voraxians would wait five days here to rest and make battle preparations.  After that they would proceed against the forces of Grand with or without their aid.*

He couldn't sleep after another nightmare, couldn't go back to rest. The sound of marching steel sabatons never left his head, and the strange feelings that come in the backwash of such dreams. Fanatism, war neverending, religious zealots. He flipped through his diary in the pale light, felt the weight of the pages, compressed fate. How stupid he had been, ignorant, naïve, blind. How easily he trusted the rest of them. How much he learned, when he could have learned so much more. He tried not to feel, not to think too much about it. It was then that a small folded piece of parchment fell from between the pages when he turned them. He picked it up, unfolded it and read the poem with a frown on his face. The parchment smelled old, and he read the poem twice. Folded it up and put it back. He took a quill and wrote a single word onto the last page.
Then to stare up to the Stars, where a man was a god now, a man who never put himself on a pedestal or believed in any god ...
All men must die, and not where they came from but what they did will be remembered -- how they meet death. A rendezvous, he had a rendezvous with death...

Hundreds of miles to the south of the ensuing battle between the Siphe Garra, their Toranite, Hilm and Rofireinite allies another conflict was already ongoing.

Captain's Vrebel and Kromlek, Major Griff, and the small force of Hilmites, Toranites and Voraxians pursued the enemy Horde as it made its relatively quick passage north. Their forces constantly nipped at the heels of the horde forcing them to dispatch numerous counter attack forces to their rear in an attempt to fend off the ferocious attacks by their determined pursuers.

Despite the Shaman of Grand leaving dead prisoners in the Hordes wake the allied host did what they could to harrass the enemy, as best they could. Hundreds fell to their incessant attacks, maybe thousands, but it was not enough to put any real dent in the tens of thousands within the giant carpet of non humans moving north.

That is until, purely by some miracle of fate, the allied forces discovered the prisoner transporter and a large cache of water supplies for the Horde and immediately launched an all out assault. Most of the prisoners were saved and all of the water stores with them destroyed.

The act finally stirred the Horde into action, the affront too much for even the Horde leaders to bear and slowly, inexorably the Horde reversed their direction and poured into the Roughland ravines where the allied forces had gathered and waited, the location the only source of water for at least a hundred miles, water the Horde now desperately needed.

What followed was a battle on the scale of the extraordinary. Several thousand against the Horde of tens of thousands. The front line was formed of a wall of dwarven Steel, the legendary Red Axes led by Major Griff, and behind them shoulder to shoulder Captain Vrebel with the combined Hilmites, and various allied soldiers who had come with them from Sundance.

For days a new river formed in the base of those ravines, a river of blood, as the Horde poured itself into the narrow ravines again and again trying to destroy the allied force that was to them the bee whose sting had finally enraged the massive beast.

When the sun rose on the fifth day of the fighting in the Ravine, those amongst the allied forces who remained alive finally gave ground and their resistance crumbled. The Shaman of Grand, Segemek and the Orcish Warleader Argemek, desperate to break the allied forces and get to water for their forces sent forth their best soldiers, the ones they had specifically reserved to send against the adventurers gathered in the North. These elites still suffered heavy losses but they got the result the Horde wanted.

Captain Vrebel was finally brought down by sheer weight of numbers and the combined power of the Hordes best. Once he fell, the last of the Red Axes died in a tight ring holding off thousands of attackers. Major Griffs last words before an orcish club smashed his skull was to shout his defiance to the bitter end and to praise Vorax. He knew that they had done the impossible, that their sacrifice would hold the Horde in the south and not let them join Shadrixkayls forces in the north and that ultimately it would mean the Siphe Principality would be saved and more than likely Hilm as well.

In years to follow the battle of the 'Wall of Iron' would be remembered, recorded and studied by leaders and warriors as a study of exceptional defensive tactics in the face of overwhelming odds. The location where it took place would be dedicated by Sir Lance and Lord Alexander as the 'Iron Gorge' in memory of those brave men and women who fought and died there.

But they are days to come. As the Horde finally broke through the last defenders what order held by the orcish leaders was lost as thirsty creatures broke for the spring fed oasis. What followed was a slaughter as the creautres of the Horde turned on themselves in desperation to get to the water and hold it. Thousands perished around the oasis causing the water to putrify for months afterwards before the Orcish leaders regained some measure of control but it was not enough to hold the Horde together and for the next few months Sir Lances soldiers out of Sundance launched forays and patrols across southern Hilm to drive the non humans back to the moutnains where they had come from. The last word from the Half orcish Shaman was that the horde would return one day and exact its vengeance.

Meanwhile in the North by the time the sacrifice made by the allied forces who made up the Wall of Iron was known several weeks of sporadic fighting occured along the southern border of the Siphe Principality as Shadrixkayl launched half hearted attacks at the remaining defenders.

Of the mighty dragon Ractrafiorez nothing was seen and by the second day of the Siphe Garra reclaiming their border defensive positions the Fire Giant allies announced they were leaving. They collected their fire stones and returned to the mountains.

Within a month of the Garra's offensive to reclaim their lands taken by Shadrixkayls forces the fighting had died down to the occassional skirmish at night and within two months even those attacked died completely. Slowly the mist began to evaporate from the Roughlands south of the Siphe Principality and for all intents and purposes the Siphe Garra began to believe they had won the battle. Certainly nothing came forward for the months that followed to dissuade them of that notion.

Several things had changed by the wars end though, Jaedon Siphe was almost always accompanied by the Lady Commander Daniella Stormhaven whose legend had grown amongst the Garra for her pivotal role in helping defeat Shadrixkayls curse, the mist that had covered the land, and her almost single handed slaying of a powerful Mist dragon that had killed so many of the defenders during the offensive that retook the front lines.

So too the other adventurers who had aided in the conflict were recognised for their efforts and granted free passage to and from the Siphe Principality lands for the rest of their lives.

At Daniella Stormhavens urging the Temple to Toran was completed in short measure and the Siphe Garra finally given permission by Jaedon Siphe to attend freely if they wanted to.

Thus was to begin a tough but new era for the Siphe Principality, the fledgling nation trying to establish itself in the aftermath of a long and bloody war against the Green Dragon Cult.

After returning to Sundance at Captain Vrebels command before they entered the ravines to get the prisoners and water. Kromlek is devastated to learn he missed such a legendary battle at Iron Gorge and curses Vrebels decision to send him south instead of letting him join them in the ravines.

Kromlek then finds Sir Lance and makes his report of what Vrebel and Griff were going to do then asks to be allowed to command some soldiers to go and join them.

((Assuming thats approved by Lance))

On the journey north Kromlek comes across scattered survivors from vrebels force who recount the epic battles. His mission then becomes finding more survivors and harrying the remnants of the Horde as they flee to the east. At least exacting his revenge on them that way.

The whole time he tells the people with him what he's going to do to Vrebel when he sees him again for letting him miss the Wall of Iron battle, in good humour of course!

/// Congratulations everyone, I heard it was epic!

The infamous Mercenary Steel
The Philanthopist Razeriem
The emminent Bard Andrew Reid
Hilm Huntmistress Jilseponie Kendall
Scout Ferrit Pandorn
Scout Sehky
The Mercenary Jetta

Once the ceremonies were over the familiar figure of Jaedon Siphe crossed the parade compound with Lady Daniella Stormhaven at his shoulder.

The Toranites who had served with the Garra for the last two years were rounded up and presented in parade formation.

Jaedon Siphe looked over them carefully then stopped a short distance in front of them.

"All of you have fulfilled your terms here with the Siphe Garra, you have given more than I could have asked for in your time here. When you arrived I saw mewling kittens. Now I see before me the makings of fine soldiers.

Your terms are over, I release you from the Garra should that be your wish."

He glances at Daniella a moment them moves to stand in front of Eighth Rank William Leox.

"Your term has ended soldier, I thank you for your dedication and service. You have already been reassigned. You are to report to Sir Lance in Sundance and coordinate with him the removal of the remnants of the Horde from southern Hilm."

Siphe then leans in very close to the young man and speaks several words softly leaving the young man slightly puzzled for a moment before his usual stoic resolution enters his face once more.

"Dismissed Soldier!"

He returns to Daniella's side and nods slightly to which Daniella looks at him questioningly but he says nothing further about the words he spoke to the young Toranite William.

"Dismissed all." He salutes them in the Garra fashion.

Leaving the parade grounds, limping proudly.  "Dismissed my bum, ain't gettin' rid of Mari MacMurray that easy."  She's grinning ear to ear.  "Little trip home, then I re-up.  Toran, think you can throw Ausir in my path mebbe?  Um, scratch that, sorry.  I mean only if you want to...um...nevermind."  Limping and blushing, Seventh MacMurray heads for her tent.

"Well, that's typical.  The famous and favored get the credit for everything.  But I know if it wasn't for my decoy portal idea Steel's extra-planar mission would likely have failed miserably."

William salutes in Garra fashion, his face a stoic, somber mask of stone.
"An honor to have fought and served with you, Mylord." He pauses for a moment before continueing in his usual no-nonsense straight to the point kind of speaking. "Live and fight well."

He turns on his heels, grabs his things - there was nothing more here for him, either - and leaves for the small building build for Toran, where he sits, lost in thought, with his blade Sacrifice resting on his knees, reading from a small notebook that appears to be a diary of some sort.

After receiving his marching orders, William joins a treck of soldiers, traders and adventuerers to Sundance, where he reports to the tent of Commander Sir Lance Stargazer. Sheltered by the heavy, sun-bleached cloak, the young paladin stands outside and observes the encampment and listening to the people around him until called into the Commander's tent.

The last standing orders you gave to me I retrieved for you.  Then while out on another foray, I ran into Steel's band.   They found my information useful and as they were driving deep in an assault that would take them to the heart of the matter, I gave them my services.  Upon our return to the surface, the enemy pushed forwards once again, and since I was there at the front, I would help push the enemy back.  It would have seemed cowardly for me to turn my back on the same problem that we all have been facing.  Besides, I would not leave my friends out there to fight without being by their side.  We pushed them back many miles and regained much ground.  The enemy then fled, well, what was left of them.  With all that I have seen and encountered, I knew this news would be important to you.  As others have returned to their homes, I did not, and instead came directly here to you to report.  By my reckoning, Sir, the skirmishes I was in, the information I found, has been what you have been seeking.  Now, is there something else I may do for you?

*Lance looks at Jill with a calm and yet disappointed look*  If that is the extent of the expectation, then yes, you fullfilled the orders.  I thought we were talking about the scouts that were under you, In fact it was you who brought the information on your men to have been trapped there. *he turns towards the map*  Anyway, I am glad that you are fine and that the war is over by the time being.

We are good Jil, you did what you thought you should do. No use to dwell into this now.

If you excuse me I need to keep observing the drills and scheduling the troops over for the skirmshes left.

*With that and obviously not really in his usual cheery mood he leaves the tent*

// He will not move that fast to not hear any reply, though so feel free.

*Jil stands there for a moment, thoughts running through her mind.  She did her duty.  She took no one from this camp to reduce the numbers protecting it and was given no further orders.  She felt she had done what was required of her and more.  She showed the men here, and her captured scouts, that even as Scout Commander, she would go to the depths for them, literally.  She looks at Lance as he gazes over his paperwork, and she knows, he would do the same if in her position, and she hides a smile.  She gives him a salute.*

Yes sir.  If anything more is required of me, please send word.  I'll see that it is done post haste.

*She turns smartly and exits the tent.*

His final act was BOOM - the song written after the trip to the pits and the closing of the shadow portal.  His baritone was rough after three hours, his higher notes not as smooth, but they loved it.  Siphe Principality loved it.  And after all the fighting and singing for the dead, he was positively high singing for the living.  So much energy, the waving of hands, the willingness to release themselves to the music and all the emotions carried with it...it was where he should be, it was always where he should be.

Arms in the air with Bella held aloft, bowing, blowing kisses, then sliding backstage - or, in this case, behind stacked crates that left him a semi-private space to think and prepare - and it was over.  The crowd dispersed in clumps of chatter.  The sound flowed over the wooden boxes like a fitful stream, and he picked out a sentence here and there in the flowing mix of words.  Folding his arms, resting his chin on his chest, he stopped listening and just...heard.

Torches were being lit along the walls when he opened his eyes.  Nothing now but faint, scattered conversations staining the gold-washed darkness.  Time to go.  No farewells - he didn't know if Jaedon or Daniella had attended the show, they didn't stand out if they did, but he was sure any announcement of his egress was unnecessary.  He wasn't planning on being back anytime soon.

*After some time Lance calls Jill inside a tent for a private talk, this on the last day before departing towrds Hilm, Lance will look upon Griff Voraxians and inform Vrebel to coordinate with the rest of the Captains for the preparaition of the move of the chapters*

*There is some tense calm as this happen, There are still some chapters that will remain into Sundance,to put things in peace on Sundance and to the South, to fight on the remanants of the horde, to keep peace on the troubled land of Hilm.*

*During the next months, Sundance military presence is continually being reinforced and there is a chain of small quarters beetwen Sundance and Briardusk , small camps are build to keep a line of moving militia beetwen the cities this to keep the resources moving and the elements ready for action when needed*

*Back on Hilm after the arrival of Milady Daniella back to the Castle, and her departure about one week later, a huge caravan has been seen heading towards Fiorez city, for the protection of the lady, there are members of the Company of the Star personally guarding the carriage*

*The dust settling.. a tense calm ....*
