Its a crowd drawing a crowd.  I'd spend more time in Hampshire, which I think is an awesome city, if others were there.  The primary reason I go anywhere is to find people and Hlint is reliable for that.

Definitely Port Hampshire. The advanced craft house is next to the regular crafthouse; the bank and all the merchants are in one building with a temple; there is sa dock to take you to Rilara which is littered with CNR.

The prices are much better, too.

what about a travelling market that visited different towns on different days. Would this encourage some travel? better use of other areas?

Hampshire, definitely.  The prices are better and the shops are all in one spot, next to the bank.  I wish it were the trade center of Mistone, not the stupid little place called Hlint. ;)

everyone stays in hlint becouse that is where the buyers are.. low levels are in hlint, and low levels buy gear, make deal, get in dept, and work for cheep. Now for RP reasions i would go to hampshire, becouse for all the PC that are in hlint there are 1000+ npcs that we dont see in hampshire, now they dont buy stuff, but you shouldent know that. Give me a really good resion to build in hlint... "becosue thats where everyone is", that is where all the PC's are becouse that is where the low levels are, becouse they cant venture much further then hlint, or at least the new people dont know that they can get to hampshire as a level 1. What i propose is that the starting area be Hampshire, this would make it the main area, such as it is for populence in a RP way. Now i know that a level 1 can kill nothing around hampshire.. but A. RP server, your not here to go kill B. if you need work or somthing you can refer the youngbloods to the town of hlint, then if you fell the need, escort them there.  Now i thank this would at least balance the PC population between hlint and hampshire. Mainly i thank this would be great for RP resions, i hate seeing hlint as the most populare place to start a busness or buy a home, the closer to hlint the better... i hate that. It is like fort Llast or fort Hope, it is just a town to stop in on your way somewhere, Hampshire would be where the busness is.

Answere one question; If you are/have/want a busness, Then think of it to the first person level, pretend all the people you dont see, pretend they are there, now pretend they buy stuff. Now keep in mind... our PC's make up about 1% of the population, and that Hampshire is a main trading hub with docks for shipping goods, Now answer the question, Where would a merchent wishing to make a living/profit selling his/her items wish to but there guild or shop?

Just my opinion though, if you really want to make money and not have to travil far, then yea shure hlint is the place, every PC gose through hlint at least once a month i belive, thats alot of posable buys, but its kinda metagaming in a aperently accepted way.

Unfortunately those NPCs aren't actually buying anything from PCs.  Also, while it is possible to get to Port Hampshire from Hlint, I was at least level 5 before anyone showed me the way, and even up to level 7 I still routinely have problems with griffons unless I am invisible.  And they are still a challenge to kill.  Even for roleplaying Hlint is the place to be since that's where other PCs are.  There isn't a whole lot of deep and interesting roleplaying going on in solitude in the middle of a town crowded with NPCs and no PCs.    However, on the up side, the Leilon Arms Inn is an excellent example of an establishment outside of Hlint that has the potential to draw a crowd.  It'd be a nightmare to code but if there was a way to create actual player-controlled vendors that would be another way to draw people out of Hlint.  Right now its more like "Yeah I have one of those for sale, come with me to my house in ."  People want to play with other people, so naturally they will gravitate towards whatever place reliably has other players, regardless of where that place is.

          * you see 'HLINT' written in a some sloppy, almost disprortionant handwriting*

          ooc:
really not sure how IC this note is, however, in character Druke would say Hlint because its just south of the far reach forest (read history) but if i played a merchant iw uoldn't have a problem at all with port hampshire. I recall in Layo V1 it seemed like they were going to let you chose starting cities, i wonder what happened to that idea. anyways it would be nicce if the cities all were surrounded by and easier area, i mean,,, how do these small towns stand up to the surround bad guys, i would LOVE to travel thats kinda why, i'm so inclinded to 'level', just so i can see the rest of teh world without fear of being smacked by some unknown evil?

As for Hlint vs. Hampshire mentality.

Most PC merchants make things for adventurers, not for everyday people. Adventurers gather in Hlint because it is a frontier town.

Hampshire has defenses, it doesn't need adventurers. Hampshire has merchants, it doesn't need craftsmen like the PCs. Hlint, in this regard, makes MUCH more sense.

// If I were a merchant with the choice between Hlint and Hampshire, for what I hear they are like, I have yet to play this game as my charachter is still waiting to be approved, I would chose Hampshire, Unfortunatly  it is more fun to be around PCs rather than NPCs so Hlint is more fun to RP in, however, if there was a way to make NPCs buy from stores that might make Hampshire the place to be.
               ;)

If I were a clothing or silverware merchant, Hampshire all the way, I agree ...

But look at Pioneer America for instance. Craftsman making firearms would want to be in small border-towns before big cities, as that is where people are going through.

It isn't that "Me sell in big city 'cause it big" it is "Me sell where peoples need"

More people need weapons and armor in a small, unguarded, town, than in a large, heavily guarded city. The majority of crafted goods would not be easily sold to the populations of cities because they would not need them.

//New to server, but having NPCs in each city that can tell PC which roads are safe to travel and which ones have isssues like the griffons would give enough info that low level like me can get out of hlint. Not that the NPC should tell every detail of the areas but just a watch out or a generally safe if you stick to the roads would be nice and is totally IC for NPC to have that general knowledge and want to share with others.

I always found it interesting that a town between 2 big cities (Hlint, in between Haven and hampshire) has more population and people walking around than either of them put together.

Hampshire is the best. Great location, everything's right there, and its got the advanced crafting house.

The only thing I'd like to see is Hampshire have as many scripted quests as hlint does...it'd only make sence.

                Hampshire, all the way.
