Inventing Stuff

I'm looking at making a character that is an inventor..The typical Gnome type.  I was thinking of making him a mage or spell sword and possibly a follower of Lucinda.

1.) I was wondering what kind of skills would he need to invent stuff? Spell craft, lore...
 
2.) Would he need high crafting skills to do some things or could he get others to make the components for him?

3.) What would be the best Class or combination of classes to take?

4.) What would it take to invent stuff? I know it starts with an idea.



Really I just want to get him to fit into the game mechanics. So any suggestions on how to do that, feel free to give your 2 cents.

P.S. My goal is to try and RP the inventions as much as possible. I just want the inventions to be possible

I had a character that was an inventor before. Her name was Merium. Springs kept dislodging themselves from her hair and clothing and everywhere!

 As for Lucinda, I highly suggest that you look into LORE: Goran. He is practically the gnomish god of inventing!

Skills to take? totally up to you. As for stats I'd suggest something with a high Int. but I cant think of any certain skill you'd need.

2) High crafting skills: Maybe tinkering would be useful for him/her.

3) Whatever class you want. My own was a wizard, but it can be a Goranite cleric if you want to do inventing and be devout ;)

4) Ideas, and GM awarement mostly. Just don't say "Oh I invented a flying machine" Randomly without the GMs approval. Give them the heads up every so often so they can aknowledge what you're doing or tell you that its not in the context of layonara; either or. You may also need some CDQs and maybe even an ECDQ/WLDQ to get the really big ones off.

Pretty much what LynnJuniper said, with the following clarification:

Anything invented must be within the technology level of the world now, which is not very high, which include things like tools, means of manufacturing, material quality, etc. Anything invented must be within the character's ability to create, based on things like crafting levels, magic caster levels, Intelligence, Dexterity, etc. In all cases, items must be RP-only and not really give an advantage of any kind to the character.  Unfortunately, there is almost no possibility of inventions becoming in-game objects, due to us hitting a limit on our palette.

Thanks...You have confirmed what I thought. I did not know about Goran though, I'll look into it.
