Gnomish helmet of night vision
« on: February 15, 2006, 03:01:18 am »
I just got this crazy idea thinking about all those soldiers running around with spectecals on their helmets... We could have such helmets aswell...

recipe:
1 platinum helmet (could be iron or adamantium as well, since nobody uses these helmets as far as I know)
2 gnomish lenses (one for each eye)
2 platinum wire (one for each lence fastning it to the helmet)

Abileties:
grants wearer ultravision
+ 2 to search and spot (this could be higher +4 perhaps)
see invisibilety 2/day (same as the two lenses alternatively it could grant see invisibilety permanently forcing people to wear the helmet if they want the benifit...)

I can't really say if the recipe is balanced but i think that 2 long lenses it quite exspensive in materials. I thought about adding an enchantet diamond but I couldn't figure out which type it should be, and I didn't think it was needed in order to make the recipe difficult compared to what the helmet granted.

Just an idea don't know if anybody else but me like it.

Make the See Invis permanent, on equipping of the helm. Makes a bit more sense, considering the way the thing's put together.

Drop the helm to Addy, add in an enchanted gem of some sort... Maybe just a Sapphire; considering the difficulty and expense in getting the various other ingredients, and the amount of Tinkering skill it would take to make the bloody thing... Och. It would only be worth it to someone with a few million gp to spare.

Device:

Tinkerers Toolbox

Difficulty- about 1 to 3 levels harder than making the Gnomish Lenses

Recipe:

- 1 platinum or Ada Helmet (since Plat ones drop somewhat regularly)
- 2 gnomish lenses (one for each eye)
- 2 platinum wire (one for each lence fastning it to the helmet)

Stats:

- Ultravision
- + 2 to search and spot (this could be higher +4 perhaps)
- See Invisibile(same spell level as one gnomish lense) 2/day

I think this is a fair amount of items......getting the two lenses made and getting the Ada will make you earn what you get back.

Permenant See Invis is far too powerfull.

Now here is an idea which our awesome tream may or may not be able to make work... but Give this Helmet a Negative Effect similar to what the drow get when they are in the sunlight!

:)

Ultravision is not a permanant effect that can be applied to an item, its a spell.  Darkvision can be applied, but has no affect on the game mechanics.

Permanant see invis cant be applied either.

Even if either were possible, its a bit too much for something of this level of difficulty in CNR.  Ultravision, a fairly innocuous seeming spell has some fairly powerful uses.

Not a perm. ultravision... And yeah, perm. See Invis. might be a bit overpowered.

Maybe just add Ultravision 1/day to the item, since you've got See Invisibility 2/day and Colour Spray 2/day.

+4 to Spot and Search...

Sounds well-rounded.

Now what to call it?

Visor of Vision, perhaps?

I think Ultravision is too powerful to have as a once per day use on an item.

I think that the reason that would be overpowered while See invisibility would not be is beacause, while See Invisibility has a limited use in combat, as Talan said, Ultravision is a rather powerful spell when used in spell combinations.

I think +4 to search and spot and See Invis twice per day would be quite powerful on its own.

I still think that the helmet belongs under armor smithing, for the simple reason that it is a metal helmet. Furthermore, nobody uses any of the crafted helmets ( except perhaps the magical addy helmet that can alredy be made) and I suggested this in order to make a helmet that people actually want...

Smithing - Amor Crafting would be pounding a Metal Helm into its basic shape, so there you make the Base Adamantium Helmet.

Affixing Gnomish Lenses to the eye holes.... that is delicate work - Tinkerers Toolbox

I don't picture that being done on an anvil with a hammer, rather it would be done with Tinkerers tools  ;)

I agree with G here that a task such as this would be very delicate and would not be done with a hammer but rather with tinkerer tools.
