Platinum Shields
« on: April 16, 2005, 10:30:00 pm »
I was thinking Platinum shields could be to iron as bronze shields are to copper.

...Why does this sound like an SAT question..?

Like this:

Platinum Shield - +1 AC, +2 AC vs Blunt, +2 AC vs Piercing

Like a step between iron and ada, as bronze is between copper and iron.

Problem with platinum is its as soft as gold reason its armor in Layo is simple.

Granted it's soft but when used 13/8ths inch thick and small partts that makr up full plate armor it works wonders...Metal shields are made with the same thickness but have an Arch to add duriblity.. If I were to make a sheet of iorn and platinum, bend them to the propper arc for a shield I would not dent the Iron with my bear hands while Platinum I may make it look was beaten to kingdom come... now add weapons and I'll dent the iron... Platinum would have holes chunks cut off maybe half of it bent to parts that make it useless.... nuff said

Then here's a revised idea.  Have platinum-plated Iron shields that give a +5 spell resistance or some such thing due to it's shininess.

This would would open up all kinds of options, not to mention that many adventurers would keep one around in case that ogre mage looked particularly mean or something like that.

Just a thought, but that way platinum could be feasible as a shield.

+5 Spell Resistance is interesting, but it's basically useless, since it doesn't stack with any previous SR you have.

For an item that is supposed to be designed for mid or mid-high level characters, i doubt that it'll stop many spells, perhaps those from the goblin shamans, or kobolds, but they'd have to roll a 1. ^_^

Making both Iron and Platinum required for the shields would make perfect sense, so perhaps adding a bonus to the resistance/immunity to bludgenoning or piercing damages could work out, just like some armors have.

the lowest SR you can put on an item is 10.  and its not +10 or anything, its just 10 or just 18 or whatever the numeric value.

To overcome spell resistance the caster rolls 1D20+caster level, so low SRs are pretty useless.  A caster level 9 or higher has no chance of having her spells resisted by SR 10.  The same caster has a 50% chance of having their spells resisted if the SR is upped to 20.

A minimum caster level cleric (level 9) that casts SR gets 21 SR.

To interject on this a bit. A Platinum Shield does not need to fall into the same constraints as a Platinum shield in the real world. Let's go ask Ozy, the Planeshifting Bard that is a 1/4 of every possible living race out there. Or the Dragons. Let's get their input. :) Do you see what I mean? Logistically yes, it would be a horrible shield. But whose to say that Platinum on Layonara needs to be a soft metal? It could make a great shield. But as I was aware, there is only a five level gap between Iron and Adamanitum. So I don't really think a whole new set of shields is really necessary.

Adamantium is difficult to obtain though and adamantium shields are less than common.

also, more stuff is good heh.  And it seems logical that it would be the step between iron and adamantium the same way bronze is between copper and iron.

Also, I doubt theres more than a 2 level gap between bronze shields and iron, so its not really the level req thats an issue with these.

in conclusion, I dont think anyones going to be heart broken if platinum shields never exist, it was just an idea.

Platinum armor is between iron and adamantium.

Also Mithril is the best available metal out there. I don't think that anyone can actually mine it.

Why need iron when we have mithril?  or copper? we should just throw it all out and get outfitted with mithril.

The armors and weapons are designed in steps for use as your character gains levels.

most mithril items (especially armors) have an epic level req.  Plus, no one has EVER mined mithril, and it may not happen before the end of the campaign.

First of all platinum is one of the heavier metals in game. Platinum armor would weigh literally 100lbs. Second. Platinum is very malleable in pure form, ie. you hit it with a  big metal sword thing you will get a dent at least. Platinum does not oxidize in air. Hydrogen and oxigen gas mixtures explode when in presence of platinum.

platinum does not explode when exposed to normal air.  (ie platinum watches, platinum jewelry)

There is already platinum armor in game.  It is part of the regular armor progression.

This is a fantasy setting.  Adamantium and Mithral dont even exist.  The real life properties of a metal, while they may be the basis of the ideas for items, are not overly important.

Working within the context of and with the precedent set by the current armor progression, platinum shields similar to the one I suggested at the begining of this thread make sense.

Platinum Armor is +2 armor.  That is the context under which platinum is viewed in the fantasy setting of layonara.

I agree. Scientifically it is impossible to have giant ants and spiders. What should it matter if a fantasy game doesn't follow the real laws of the universe.
