    Vamili - Realizing Dreams
    « on: August 30, 2012, 05:07:27 pm »

Vamili's eyes jerked open. He looked around, wondering where he was. It took a few moment's before he realized it was the Bull's Eye Inn. He had traveled to Mistone, all the way to Center.
As he sat upright in his bed, the contents of his dream slowly returned to him. There had been a woman. A sun elf. Seldera. His long dead wife had come to pay him another visit in his sleep. It had been years since he had dreamed about her, but when he woke up, he missed her as much as he did on the day she died.
Vamili closed his eyes again and wildly shook his head, trying to shake the memories out. Of course, he failed at that. He sighed, got up and went to the small desk in his room. He started reading a scroll he had kept hidden in a drawer. It was a magical scroll. A necromantic scroll. Ghoul Touch.
After studying it and trying to remember it for several hours, he stared at his hands. Vamili did not like his hands much. They were gaunt, with skimpy fingers.
It might not be so bad to cast this spell. At least it's practice. I need practice. Necromantic practice.

Vamili looked over his shoulder at the cave he just left and felt good about himself. Sahuagin and kobolds alike had fallen under his spells. He had brought death to the evil creatures, like evil had done to his family. Vamili realized that the creatures of the cave had nothing to do with it, but it still felt good to deliver justice.
He had not found what he had been looking for, however. He had not found any spell scrolls, necromantic or other. How in the world can I bring back the people I have lost so long ago, if I can't even find a single magical scroll? His self esteem gushed out of him like a stench out of a pierced stomach. It left him equally nauseous.
I will have to travel more. Rest less. My strength fades with every breath I take, and I still have not found the way to raise a single corpse. Surely there must be scrolls describing the process. But where?

      Where?

        Vamili sighed. I don't understand.
He had just encountered many skeletons while helping Ezekiel retrieve his lantern. All of them had seemed mindless to Vamili. There was no telling who they had been in life. Or why they had left their graves.
I have no clue what goes on in the mind of those skeletons. How am I to create something I do not understand?
His mind left it's trail there, and went back to his son, Daemilion. He had never truly understood him either. Never grasped what went on behind his eyes. Why did that boy leave us? Did we not give him all that we could? Not for the first time, Vamili wondered if he had been a bad father.

Vamili woke up by the sound of a knuckle falling on the floor. He had fallen asleep behind his desk, studying a skeleton's knuckle. It had seemed an ordinary knuckle. There were no signs that it had been animated before. How was he to understand something, when it wasn't there anymore?
I did not understand my son's wild nature, because I'm not a wild man myself. Now, I do not understand this skeleton's knuckle, because I'm no skeleton. How was he to understand something, that was so different from himself?
Vamili placed the knuckle back on his desk and went to bed. Even before he closed his eyes, visions of his long gone wife came rushing into his head.
Seldera... If only I could bring you back.

I can only create what I truly understand, and I can only truly understand what I experience. Vamili gagged as a disgusting though came rushing to his mind. He knew what he had to do. He did not like it, not one bit, but it was necessary. The end would justify the means, though he despised the exigency.
He had to experience undeath. Not truly become one, but be like one. Resemble one. Experience what it was like to be cold in skin and bones.
It is the only way to understand undeath. The only way to create undeath. The only way to see my wife again. The only way to see my sister again. Perhaps even the only way to see my son again. It is the only way to bring them all back.
