    Use Magic Device question
    « on: November 23, 2006, 12:22:56 am »
I've got a nice stock of first and second level scrolls that I've collected here and there since Gilli came to Hlint. I currently have my UMD skill maxed out [or within 1 point of it] at 12 [I think] as a 9th level rogue. I noticed the DC for scrolls are 25 and 26, guessing first and second level, and was wondering if higher level scrolls have significantly higher DCs, or if they increase by one per level. As it is now, I fail 9/10 times trying to use scrolls of first and second level...

I beleive they are much higher yet... Rogues can't use scrolls worth a darn in Layo.

In the last version all the Rogues in Layo had bags full of scrolls... which wasnt right either... so maybe V3 will bring a happy middle ground.  ;)

hey a rogue can hope cant they!?  :)

DC to use a scroll is 25 + spell level of the scroll

Reading a scroll is much more difficult than using a wand. A wand works like this: Point, say the command word/perform the command gesture and it casts. A scroll you're having to perform most of the casting yourself. I don't think this should be changed at all.

We didn't acctually code the change you refer to G. It's bioware code, but you can switch it on and off (when off scrolls work like wands or any other class restricted item rather than having a DC you roll against.)

Ok, I thought that was the case. I do agree that it shouldn't be changed, otherwise you'd have all the little rogue-lings running around acting like wizards *grins* Nice for the rogue, but would make 'em a little too powerful i'd say. Thanks TV

It wouldn't make them too powerful at all, really. When you consider that all spell scrolls are usually the min. caster level, have a very low DC, and the duration matches the caster level, it's not such a huge thing. However, the idea that Rogues can read something people have had to 'train' for years to even begin to is what bugs me. I like the DCs the way they are. I wouldn't want them changed at all.

I haven't seen many wizard/rogue combonations here.  I heard somewhere that a wizard rogue loses the ability to use a lot of items that a wizard can normally use, b/c the umd check gets applied against everything, including items that are in class for the wizard?  Can anyone verify this?

      Thanks

Yeah multiclassing rogues/spellcasters with UMD messes up with about a bazzillion things, particularly scroll casting. And no Rayenoir, its for all scrolls, divine, arcane, and toilet paper. A rogue's life is "unique".  And the DCs aren't changing in V3, like 8bit said, they're faking years and years of someone else training in an art, it isn't going to be an easy task, no matter how cool you think you are.
