    Any guidelines for in-game bio's?
    « on: March 05, 2006, 03:15:35 pm »
Hello, not sure where I should ask this so here goes.
Just wondering if there is a guide as to how long/short they should be, or whether there is a particular format that should be followed.
I usually write a maximum of three paragraphs explaining three things...
1 - His physical characteristics; size, weight, height, hair colour, distinguishing characteristics. ect.
2 - His belongings and/or equipment and what they look like. This is only static equipment, things that may change do not get listed.
3 - His most common mannerisms that other characters can see, no inner thoughts or demons.

Is this good, or do people hate reading a lot online?

It depends from person to person.

Do in the way you want. :)

Personally, I'm writing the same things as you suggest...

Yeah, I do essentially what you are planning. But, like Weeblie said, everyone handles it differently.

There's no particular format to the bio portion. Things like name, class, deity (if any), domains (if cleric), age and race are required.
For the bio, some subraces and classes require a more detailed biography. If yours falls short, the Character GMs will advise you on where more information is needed.

Uh... I think he mean the text you see when you are examining people in game. ;)

O this one is one of my pet peves,
    WARNNING RANT AHEAD..

I hate Bios thats Say how your PC "FEELS" about there PC.
    Ones like...
    "You feel uncofitabel around HIm/her"
    OR
    "HE/SHE fills you with dread"
    OR
"You can not help your self but be drawen to them"
Please! Dont tell my PC how they feel Ill do that thank you

Its as bad as telling other PCs what happens to them in game.
"Y PICKs X up and THROWS them in the lake"
    When it should be
"Y trys to pick up X and throw them in the lake"
This lets Roll come and RP happon

Your RP should make otheres players PCs feel the way you would like them to not your Bio.

    Well that said Peve over

I usually try to avoid to include what you listed as '3.' You'll be stuck with the description if those things change when your character develops a way you didn't expect.

I usually try to keep it simple for my characters.  Mostly because I shady and mysterious characters who also happen to be Drow.  But I could adapt it to fit any kind of character.  For example, here is a gnomish wizard's description using my methods:

"You look and see a gnome who can't stop chanting magical incantations.  He seems a bit off.  RP for more information."

I like this way because it doesn't flat out TELL others what he is like, and it makes the others Roleplay the information that you provide them.  It's just me, but I like this more.  :)

I _try_ to only include things in the description wich people can notice during
a short period of time. Like a minute or less. So mannerisms wich are used
very frequently might be added in one of my descriptions. Also, I tend to stay
within the range of three senses. What others see, hear and smell. Well, if you
rp a lot with people like Ozy you may want to add what you taste like and what
your skin feels like too. >_>

And what has been said already above, only describe things that you think will
not be changing any time soon.
