    bard Rp poll
    « on: June 30, 2005, 12:08:00 am »
Ok I have a question that I didn't see asked before. Its basicly what do people want out of the RP side of a bard.  Should their stories be kept to the forum or not. If not do you want them to sing and tell stories on adventures or just in an inn, that kind of thing.  I have gotten mixed reactions with my bard who likes to tell stories, she does not sing as she is a historian and lore master. But she can inspire her group by telling of a historic battle or a part of history that really hightens the moment. Like reciting how the troops of Bloodstone put a town to the torch killing 3,000 women and children might inspir you to protect your town a bit more then some bard singing a really up beat version of the the farmers daughter.

I agree.  I'm always up for a good tale.  Feel free to spin them on Bido Ryskill at any time.  He loves that sort of thing.  Minugi too.

I can say I tell a tale whenever I get the possibility and time allows it.

I say you should do it whenever and whereever your character feels like it :)
*evil grin* mind you remember that not all characters in game will appreciate it :)

yes some do not like tales, I have had people put cotton in their ears to escape my tales and a bit later run away yelling "the cotton doesn't work".

Then again, what fun are tales if they're all true?  Fact without fiction is just a boring history lesson.

*Evil bard grin*  Reminds me to get to work on my bard write-up...

lie, make up stories for entertainment, sing all the time even if just practicing. I imagine a bard always telling tories to himself simply to practice telling them better in big crowds. I picture them singing all the time for the same reason. Practice, practice, practice ... so that when you go to do it for real, youre well rehearsed.

One humble opinion on storytellers is to try and keep stories and songs to a shorter length. Telling epic tales or singing for ten minutes without drawing breath will lose my attention. As a fighter, I prefer quick stories like:

"A feller was hauling ash in his cart on the village path the other day and was pulled over for speeding by a local sheriff. When told if he could give a good enough reason for speeding that he could avoid a ticket, the serf replied that his wife had been stolen by a sheriff two years before and he thought that she was being returned. The sheriff didn't write the ticket."

Now where is that Ogre that needed slaying?....

         :)

I disagree here.  A bard's job is to relate tales either via speaking or singing.  Asking a bard to keep the story short and sweet is like asking a fighter to stop fighting or a priest to stop praying.  Bard talk.  Alot.  I get harrassed all the time by friends that I talk too much and we never get anything done.  I wouldnt be much of a bard if all I did was tell a one or two sentence story and be done with it.  My humble opinion of course, but as a bard, the more epic the story, the more I will be drawn to ge tall the info I can on it and the more I will be interested in telling it.  If I am not excited by the story then how can I tell it?

Yes, always time for a good story. It always fun to do it when there is a dm watching. Good stories are certainly worth XP. I have a bard on another PW who earned money and xp by telling his story of "The paladin and the broomstick" in inns.

I agree that a story should not necessarily be short. Most of mine are long (perhaps 30 minutes to tell it) and if I told them in a few sentences then they would lose what meaning they have. If a good tale is being told around a campfire then what does time matter ;) also if a tale is going to be a grand epic of heroism and bravery it should be long, it should be elaborate to make the listener feel the proportions of the tale.

Unfortunately, when I come online to play it is generally time limited and working towards character progression so I have very limited time that I would be willing to expend on listening. In my real life weekend SCA activities I have spent many good hours around a fire listening to tales, songs and sipping a cold one. How about this... you talk while I am [active verb]...? Hewing off limbs while listening to your epic tale would work fine!  :)

Character progression? Is that an expensive word for leveling your character? Getting to know the other inhabitants and history of Layonara sounds like character progression to me.

Well my bard is a historian and lore keeper so some are bound to be boring history lessons. She finds them terriably facinating however.  I do try to keep the stories short and related as well as intresting most of the time, but at times her rambeling on history gets out of hand.  It will help when we have more facts on history available as much of her information should be either fact or widly believed to be fact.  I have a bit of an odd storyline for my bard, and hopefuly people will like it as I meet more people and develop more stories.  Right now she is primarly focused on her current research project and everyone has been interested in it so far that I have talked to.  If you want stories and lies try Ozy I hear he will tell you anything ture or not, he is a ture bards bard.  ;)

I rarly just stop and tell stories unless I'm in town and then you can either stop and listen or keep moving.  I do tend to ramble on while on an adveture and during fights that is how our "bardic music" inspires, thought from me it is more likely to be a lesson on tactics, history, or a story about the monsters we are fighting.  But if you walk out on my tales to many times don't expect allot of help from me later.  My bard is cursed and a horrid fighter, the only thing I bring to a party are my stories, and magic, and I focus on history and research.

Sounds like it would be a fun time listening to some of your stories! You have certainly given this much thought and consideration for others. That makes all the difference in willingness to sit and listen to a bard. Looking forward to seeing you in Layonara!
