A stupid moment or good AI
« on: April 11, 2006, 10:51:39 pm »
We'll its one of those moments that had me in tears of laughter last night during Dezza's quest.  We started in Lar and my character Angus and Geddrin sat in the Inn and RP'ed at one of the tables.  I was about to emote grabbing the barmaids attention for service when one just so happened to walk up right to our table where she mentioned something about what we wanted.  Well I dont get online much these days and have never seen a Barmaid act on her own accord unless possessed by a GM (which is exactly what I thought).  So I start talking to her and she walks off to the other end of the tavern where a few other PC's just happened to be.  i thought to myself 'how bloody rude!!'.  So afer time she walked back and commented on something else which was quite feasable.  I then begen to speak again and once again got snubbed by her.  Then it clicked to me....this is AI.  God!  Firstly i was embarrassed since i was caught out, then I couldnt stop laughing and applauded the good use of AI.  The whole scene was perfect.  Geddrin and I commented for over five minutes how rude the maid was before it clicked.  It made for awesome RP.

Good work with this guys.  Your hard work doesnt go unnoticed!

Cheers,

After reading this, I think it was the doing of a human, not AI. One of the ways to check for this is to click on the character's portrait in the speech record box. My reason: I know what to look for, and can identify human-controlled NPCs during quests, quest intorductions, and some in-game RP.

It's not. The waitress in Lar chats up people while walking around customers and the like. Like walking up to the bartender and asking for a "dirty gnome with a twist."

... So there are some NPCs who are more round than most? *scratches his head*

Yes, that is an NPC AI. We used to have it in every inn but the AI eats up system resources so it is only on a few of them now. I am pretty sure you guys/gals want the cpu cycles and memory etc. to go for the players so there is less lag....right?

Yes!

That is pretty good Polak.  I was in that inn the other day, it is quite a marvel to see the AI at work there.  Good job team!

// HeHe I thought Dezza was taking the mickey out of me and angus and was all like /dm is that you wolf? /dm is the barmaid off her medication? Like Polak said it was so funny, the cranky Dwarf and the No Nonsense Stoic Angus and a rude Barmaid, recipe for belly laughs! Took us until the same questions recycled back around to realise and then I remembered exactly what Leanther said about the AI being in all Taverns once upon a time. HAHA Polak didn't believe me at first, but after the same actions repaeated a few times I had him convinced.

Definitely.  I remember the world way back when I first joined and we had the NPC vendor system in effect...  The lag was so bad I thought the server was run off a Commadore 64.  As soon es they were fired in bulk, the entire server got about 3 times as fun, that's how much lag it fixed!

Oh, my, an old Commodore?

Och. Down with NPC AI! *He chuckles.*

Though they're awfully entertaining.

Aye!  We used to joke that lag spikes happened when the vendors all took a jump to the left and a step to the right in unison.

Let's do the Time Warp again!
