I submit the name Talon, as Layonara is based on a world where once dragons where every where the story could be the survivors used the dragon talon as a measure of wieght to wiegh it's equvilent in gold....and as the guilds which surley formed from the early merchants needing a set amount of wieght to ensure level and fair trade. Now granted the idea that all dragon talons would wiegh the same is foolish but if one was chosen and all others based upon it ( by shaving or adding wieght to it) then this could be the basis of our coins and provide them with a name.

Now where is this Talon and has any one seen it for a while...is it on display somewhere. What is the details of this story, is it from a specific dragon......that some mage might need for some magic's.....the possiblities are endless

OOO!! I know, I know!! For 1gp, the name should be GOLDY! And for 5gp, the name should be GOLDY-S! ;)
You know I kid SquareKnot! That really IS a good question. It would confuse some (like me) at first, but it would really add to the spirit and RP of Layo. :) Really good idea man.

Ha Ha. Actually, Ifion has had so few gold pieces, he's given each its own individual name. Yesterday, he spent George and Fred buying arrows...

Maybe Scales, by the same token Praylor mentioned.

I've been using different denominational coins, though, in RP, using metals I've seen used in other campaigns.

10 Gold = 1 Platinum
10 Plat = 1 Mithril??? (No electrum, heh.)

Makes the idea of carrying around all that money easier. Then, of course, there are bank slips for larger amounts.

I'm totally fine with having just 'coins' as it is, it's much more practical...

 It's a good idea, regardless. :)

The Rofireinite votes for Talons.  Good ideas all round though. :)

Electrum is a real alloy.  In ancient times, gold and silver were found naturally mixed.  The Greeks called it elektron (but in Greek letters), and the Romans turned that into electrum.

Prior to D&D 3.0, there were electrum coins.  As you might imagine of a coin made of gold and silver, they were worth 5 silver pieces, or half a gold piece.

Which was just unecessarily complicated.  In NWN, they went with the gold-only, no-weight currency because a) it prevented money from becoming ridiculously o'erburdening, b) it made prices straightforward.  The whole point of platinum, iridium, gems, etc. was to prevent the weight of coinage crushing those who carry it in classical PnP, where individual coins have weight.

I would argue that the explanation behind "talons" makes little sense, as a dragon talon would weigh unrealistically much (especially given that our coins weigh nothing), since dragon talons have the same damage as shortswords - and similarly, a scale from a mature dragon would be huge, though less weighty.  If the gold needs a name at all, I'll continue to push "crowns" - it's not a formal name, and doubtless doesn't apply to some of the ancient coins... but it's a lovely generic name for any coins minted by royalty.

I agree and disagree.  It's similar to U.S. currency.  Ten pennies make a dime, and ten dimes make a dollar.  Are quarters and nickels unnecessarily complicated?  *shrug*  Multiple denominations add complexity, but they also add character.

And also, Gulnyr, are a bit harder to script.

Scales, crowns, either sounds good to me.

how about people calling the GP's "moneys"
EG: "i will give you four thousand moneys for said magic ring, and that is the most moneys i will offer!"

I'll go with that, "coins" sounds good enought to me.

Thank you. That's all I wanted, and much faster than I expected. I appreciate all that the writing team does to add depth to Layonara.

All of my characters have referred to them as something else for so long, that I will just have to keep up with that.

Now here's a question, Ed. Are Trues, Innpieces (to shorten the name to something usable), Queens (I think Crowns would be more fitting on this one), and Towers all worth the same?
