Does a Gold Piece Have a Name?
« on: August 25, 2006, 11:31:13 am »
I didn't see any mention of this in the Handbook or anywhere else, and I've never heard anyone mention it in-game. So, is there an official currency of Layonara? One coin accepted on all continents by all peoples? NWN pretty much forces that to be the case -- the "gold piece." I don't want to start a discussion on multiple coin types in NWN.

Soooo, assuming there is one coin, what is its name? It just seems like it would add a little to the world if people said, "It's five Layos for that, and not one less!" instead of "that's 5 gp."

And if it were the Layo, the symbol could be £ ...

I've heard it referred to as "Queen's coin" and a few other things. Not certian if there's an offical anything, would be very interesting to find out and the story behind it.

Since they're sort of part of an empire despite Mistone's seeming sovereignty and the fall of Pranzis, I imagine there would be a common currency used throughout it. It would feel pretty silly to me to make official notes about the "single coin" of a continent, though. I would rather there were a few breakdowns and we simply decided on the one that NWN's "gold piece" would represent.

Of course I would love if Voltrex snubbed the common coin, but hey... ;)

As a sidenote in response to a comment in the original post, coinage has been done, including making certain kinds region-specific... When you loot gold, they translate it into different levels of change as items in your inventory... it's interesting. :)

Marks are a common one I've heard, or just "coin." Then there's jinks, shinies, etc.

Plus, presumably the thousand-year-old tombs that are plundered on a weekly basis contain gold pieces of some denomination other than the current mintings.  Ergo, if it's made of gold and coin-shaped, merchants take it.  More to the point, such coins probably stay in circulation, so I doubt there's any kind of unified coinage system.  (Though, if anything is being used, "crowns" seem fairly nondenominational - most coins are issued by royalty, after all.)

I like Crowns.  Sounds like a good name for royally minted currency.  Of course, if a dwarf decided to mine some gold and smelt it into little disks the size of a goldpiece, few shopkeeps would turn that down either.  back when silver and gold coins were popular, "shaving" became the dubious practice of taking large amounts of coinage and shaving a tiny amount off each, resmelting them into new full coins.  Hence thhe marketplace usually had plenty of scales on hand, in order to make transactions based on the amount of gold rather than the amount of coins.

Ed the campaign guru would know best what current mintings are popularized in Layonara though.

Shaving was also the reason coins were given the lined edge that most coin currency has today, to show whether or not it has been shaved. It is rather useless a practice now, but kept out of tradition I guess because it is so familiar.
