How about a LayoCon
« on: April 05, 2007, 03:16:59 pm »
A F2F LayoCon would be a blast but for a community our size and placement it would be hard to do. But we could have one online in someplace like SecondLife. Might be fun to get together in a setting where we could all gather in one place without our PC persona. I am sure there are places in SL that we could use for this. What do you all think?

IRC works fairly well for this?

I'd imagine he wants to show off his cool armor and sword he made to people *nods and hears jriz shouting and running "I have boots of escaping!"*

@jrizz: Buy me a ticket, and I'll come ;)

Too funny.

Really take a look at SecondLife. I mean I dont really see the point of being there all the time when you can be gaming but for a online LayoCon it would be great.

I think IRC is too linear for this kind of thing.

So... couldn't you do a LayoCon in game then? Why get SecondLife?

I thought about asking to do it IG but I thought:
1. It will stress the servers to have us all on the same server and same areas.
2. It would disrupt those who want to just go play and not be at LayoCon.
3. We would have to come on as one of our PCs

SecandLife is a free download and membership was free last time I looked. That is why I picked that one else I would have looked at one of the other ones.

I am sure many will feel that way. Perhaps we can reserve a day on Layo for LayoCon. Come as your fav PC. We can have live seminars covering:
Layo history
Spell casting techniques
Combat tactics
PC development
Druid chats
Deity talks
Bio building
A meet the WLs meet and greet
Others

We could spread it out over a few areas. Have zones for seminars, commerce, just plain meet the other players area. Just do a day (or a few hours) of OOC and get to know ya stuff.

OK I had not been to secondlife for a long time. It is not the right venue for us. Can we look at doing it on Layo?

To avoid the server issues you could always use the quest server or have the planes server emulate west for the day.

Don't see why it shouldn't, as long that Quest or Planes isn't in use for a quest.

Great! how do I go about getting permission/ageement to do this? If I can get a green light then I would like to have forum area for discussion of the event. I think this would be a lot of fun.

Question: can the spawns be turned off for the duration and can the areas be resricted?

Heh a layocon sounds like an interesting thing, though secondlife...hmmm heard about it from folks but never tried it myself. Isn't it like an mmorpg meets Sims?

Why'd you want to turn them off? Can just hold it in some city, right?

I was thinking that it could cover a few areas. This way we could organize it like a "live" con with rooms for different events and seminar rooms. We could spread out a little more to aviod overlapping text issues. Of course we could just use Hempstead as it has more then enough areas.

Also would there be a lag issue if everyone was in the same area?

Second Life: An online world where all content is user created. You can build anything, be anything, script anything. Buy and sell using ingame money, which can be bought and sold for real money. Sounds great, until you look at the people who are creating the content.
     That is, adult, male...
A good medium, handed to the wrong crowd. At least thats my largest problem with second life.
Might as well: Second Life: Your World. Your Imagination.
