Hi all,
I have heard a lot of talk about how to counterspell. When I try and selet the option it is unable to be selected, yet when I have my Summon and I right click on it, I can choose counterspell....What does it do and how can my fat dwarven Wizard, Bama, use it? Thanks! -Trace

Try defensive casting mode. I'm pretty sure that any mage within range (just stand next to one invis) will have their spell countered if you have a Lesser Dispel, Dispel Magic, Greater Dispel, or the same spell memeorized. Pretty sure anyway. ^_^

With counterspelling you need to right click on the mage you want to counterspell and use the dial select in order to use it. Its not selectable from the quick bar as far as I know. I think but am not sure that you also have to have 15 or more in spellcraft. Denfensive casting as far as I know can be used from the quickbar.
Bil has used counterspell a few times and thats the only way he has managed to get it to work anyway. Hope that helps

Counterspel is basically a mode you can switch into and out of, when you turn it on (radial dial on yourself), your mage will automaticly counterspel any thing being casted within range, providing you have the appropriate counterspells

What is it exactly that counterspelling is and what does it do? I have honestly never used it cause I couldn't find any use of it.

Somewhere along the line I had to be taken by the hand on another server and shown (it was great RP--I recommend anyone to work it out like that IG), and I'm still not sure I have it right.
If you cast the same spell as an opposing mage, on the opposing mage, their spell will be cancelled. There are other spells that also counter, light vs. dark, slow vs. haste, etc. Then the dispelling spells are universal counters. I think that's the way this works...I use a track pad when I play NWN and its really difficult to accomplish, but I think that's the theory.
I didn't realize there was a setting where you'd sit there and automatically counterspell wherever possible. I'll have to try that out!

Does anyone know what effect counterspelling has on invisibility? Is it an offensive act like attacking or passive like healing?

Actually I'm pretty sure that counterspelling only works like Steve said and not like Milo. Defensive casting mode is another thing and its used to not provoke attacks of opportunities.
You can counterspell only on targettable wizards and you need to right click on them to do so.

Look in the spell descriptions for what spells naturally counterspell it.
Also, I'm pretty sure that if you have dispells memorised and are trying to counterspell a spell you don't have the natural counter for, the dispell will be used as long as the spell you're trying to counter is equal or lesser level than that dispell it.
It also works with mords, but I'm not sure about spell breaches.

Also remember that if somebody casts a spell at you and you counter with the same spell, the offensive spell aimed at you will fizz out instantly. Each spell is instantly cancelled out by itself in counterspell mode. This is a LIFESAVER for you wizards and clerics in many areas, ie: cone of cold from ogre mages, finger of death, heck, you could even get lucky and fizzle Milara's Power Word: Kill the 1st day you learn to cast it. I believe that a few spells have diametrically opposed spells that will also work as a counterspell in this fashion, ie: some ice spells can be countered by an equal power fire spell, some charms denied by clarity, haste always eats slow and visa versa etc. Read the spell descriptions in your spells/day slot and it should be near the top of the page.
Spellcraft checks prior to the counterspelling attempt will always be important, as the counterspelling wizard must know what spell is being launched at him in order to pick the defense. One can indiscriminantly counter incoming magical attacks with the Dispell Spell, but they are useful for little else but stripping buffs from opponents. Dispell magic is not foolproof, but it is like your counterspelling trick card akin to "Jokers Wild".
Lesser Dispell Magic, Dispel Magic, Greater Dispel Magic and Mordenkainen's Disjunction will counterspell any offensive blast equal to its own lvl or lower. Dismissal and Word of Faith are excellent for banishing summons. (Milara Fizzles 4 times in a row! Oh where's yer instant Balor army NOOOW mistah evilpants! SPLAT!)
I think Defensive Casting mode is something entirely different... casting spells while getting hit with physical attacks. It requires that the mage be stationary and increases his AC vs attacks of opportunity when he casts a spell. (or it could be his concentration check boosted, not entirely sure) Anyway, it's really useful for frontline clerics who need to heal themselves or allies badly and must risk an Attack of Opportunity to do so, and for touch attacks. (inflict wounds type particularly)
Ther is also a very fun Epic Feat for an improved defensive casting mode that lets you cast in the thick of things without suffering an attack of opportunity. Clerics will truly find it to be a godsend.

Okay okay, let me explain. If anyone needs lessons please see Weston Pendrot in game for a tutorial.
1st- Select Mage to counter
2nd- Have the spell in question or one of the variety of counters (listed in the spell description)
3rd- Be in range! this is VERY important.
4th- Successful Identify = instant counter.
You can only counter in "Counter" mode. Mages sacrefice ALL actions to concentrate Soley on countering a single caster.
Keep in mind that some creatures in Layonara use Spell Like abilities. THESE ARE NOT COUNTERED!!! Oger Mages use ONLY spell like abilities and your efforts to counter will fail.
Wizards are very good at identifying spells and will succeed far more often than anyone else, except they must have the right spells to do it. Sorcerers properly equiped can drain any mage easily but are vulnerable during the process. All Dispels are universal counters and will counter everything up to +1 of their own levels. (lesser is a lv2 spell but can counter up to 3rd, dispel is a 3rd and can counter up to 4th)
