I PrC question - clarification
« on: May 20, 2005, 10:57:00 am »
First, thanks to Gulnyr for helping me research the info for this.

My question is regarding the duelist PrC, which I intent to request for Pang once I meet the requirements, there is some conflicting information regarding whats needed.

According to the Handbook, becoming a Duelist requires:
+6 BAB
Dodge, Ambidexterity, Mobility, and Weapon Focus (Rapier) Feats
5 Ranks of Tumble and 5 Ranks of Persuade
Also, a Duelist will gain no proficiencies.

According to the in-game box during level-up class selection, it requires :
+6 BAB
Dodge, Ambidexterity, Mobility, and Weapon Proficiency (Martial, Elf, or Rogue)
5 Ranks of Tumble and 5 Ranks of Persuade
Also, a Duelist will gain proficiency with all simple and martial weapons, but no armor or shields.

If someone could clarify what version is correct I'd appreciate it, at character creation I had intended to have Pang use short swords, but was told that the Rapier was required, if it just requires the rogue weapon proficiency I am covered due to class selection.

Thanks for any help.

hey, it hasnt been that long.

I'm betting that the IG description is incorrect in listing Weapon Proficiency (martial, elf, or rogue) as a requirement instead of weapon focus rapier.

As for gaining proficiencies, it doesnt really matter as the whole class is built around using a rapier which you need to have a focus in, and thus already be proficient in.

You might want to put a note in the typo/description error thread in bug reports referencing this thread, as this is something that should probably be fixed once the correct description is confirmed.

I am not sure which one is correct, of course, as handbook guy, I'm going with handbook :)
But to be sure somebody would need to look into it.

i'm pretty sure the use of Rapiers for the duelist is required, though Rapier is also covered in the rogue proficiencies, though you will need to take the weapon focus feat

It requires both Weapon Proficiency in either Martial, Elf or Rogue AND Weapon Focus Rapier

Are any proficencies gained?

For example, an elven rogue wouldnt have martial, but could still fufill the requirements, would they get Martial Proficiency?

It really doesnt matter for the duelist, since you're not going to really use any other weapons... but... just for clarification.

I missed the Weapon Focus Feat the last time Drawna was eligible for this class and I am still kicking myself for it. I mistakenly went by the default duelist requirements listed on the level up screen. Make sure you have the correct skill RANKS too, not just total skill bonus. (i.e. including Stat modifier)

Also, I was told in the past that I would not need special permission to level up in Duelist. I since have seen some statements made that would imply one would need to do a character development or at least get permission before leveling in this PrC. You may want to look into this.

You do need to resubmit for duelist und the new rules yes, exp, aing why the character is headed in that direction and what makes her suitable.  Orthy is right as well, though precise strike works with other light weapons you need to have Focus in the rapier and the other required weapon feats.

Thanks everyone.
So.. am I correct in understanding that the abilities gained through the dualist class will work with other light weapons, I just need to spend a feat on weapon focus rapier? Or is it just that one skill that works?

It will work with any one handed piercing weapon. Dagger, shortsword and rapier.

But yes, it requires you to have weapon focus: rapier. There is no generic focus feat, so a specific has to picked in the code. Rapier was the one that most fit with the theme of the class.

If you're a gnome duelist a rapier will not work (because it'll be 2 handed), but you still have to purchase the feat.
