Kick in the digital cajones

Campus doesn't allow any online gaming and their firewall blocks everything under the sun.  See you all in '06.

DEFINITELY live off campus.  That 1st year I lived on campus was a nightmare.  They forced myself and my roommate into a teeny tiny room with a smoke detector that went off on a mosquito's fart, and a bathroom shared between 4 people.  Even worse, the other 2 people on the other side of the bathroom had access to our room, so things kept going missing while one of the idiots was feeding his pill addiction.  This "glorious" living arrangement cost us around 550/month, each...

Fast forward a few years, now I'm in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with a kitchen, living room and dining room, and just one of those rooms is larger than the "bedroom" we had in the dorms.  The management doesn't care what we do, so long as we don't bring the wrath of the SWAT team down on our culdesac, and rent is only 470/month split between 2 people.

And best of all, no campus firewalls, lag, or P2P restrictions.

Dorms are just the government's plot to make us used to prison living.  The ONLY benefit I found from living in one, was that if I was in a bad mood, there was always a frat boy within arms reach to rough up

No choice.  I'm in a foreign country on an exchange program and a student visa in a city where one of the majors is Japanese.  :P  In other words, I couldn't begin to afford to live off campus in Japan, not while my fellow international students speak Japanese far more fluently than I can.

Oh yeah, and the university is on top of a mountain.

You are on top of a mountain learning about one of the most interesting cultures in the world in one of the most beautiful countries in the planet. My advice is... forget about the stuff that you can do back at home and take advantage of this unique opportunity to do the things you can't do at home.
Enjoy your time there, I know I would give my pinky toe to be in your shoes.

But ... then the shoes would be all bloody?

Oh well ... I'd say that Pan is right for the most part though. Why go all the way to Japan to lock yourself in your dorm and play Layo? Go out, explore, see a world you have never seen before!

And if all else fails learn how black-out the campuses security, break into the router room, and re-wire everything so that you can play Layo ... and hope you don't get caught.

See you some other time though!

Haha, I can be spared the lecture.  Anyone shelling out as much $$ as I have to come here knows if nothing else the monetary value of being halfway around the world.  Plus the fact that I was even interested enough to pursue coming here in the first place should say something (especially since it meant a 5th year in college).  And I've been interested in Japan since I was a kid, and I've been here before etc. etc. . .  However, its still infinitely frustrating to be cut off from all things multiplayer.  There was no danger of me becoming a shut-in while I was here, believe me.  I just don't like restrictions on internet access when even as part of tuition is still more than what I'd be paying for for my broadband at home.  Its the same reason why I moved off campus even though (gasp) I liked the dorms for everything else.  Its easier to separate a geek from their girlfriend than from their computer. :P After all, it was there first. ;P

Anyway.  I really don't mean to sound like I'm complaining that the Venus de Milo has no arms.  I just don't like the feeling of being cut off.

Don't forget to give us FULL reports on all the neat stuff that you visit out there. Like where is that indoor surfing beach? Tell us about stuff like that in late Jan or Feb to make us all jelious. Also if you have an extra $10k US (haha) buy a real Katana, but at least get some Japaneese stuff to show in your home or office.

Hey by the way do they still make Kenko sandles? The ones that massage your feet while you walk? And whatever you do, DO NOT eat the blowfish! Yes if it kills you they do kill the cook but, you have to die first so just say NO!

We will miss ya and be power players by the time you get back. But if you ask I will submit a new Character to run with you when you get back.

Have fun .... Not to much      BTW ever thought of satalite broadband?  J/K

I ate the blowfish.  It's overrated for its brush with death.  Just get the raw salmon and cream cheese, tastes a wole lot better, and you don't have to update your will.
