Fans fans fans fans [question]

I love fans! And having read that you have fans, I'd like to use fans!

I understand that you can't select the fan in several feats, but I wanted to ask if Weapon Finesse will work with fans. And if you can't select fans in the feat menu, how do you become proficient in them? Do you simply "burn" a feat by taking Exotic Weapon Proficiency in say, whips or something?

No: Weapon Finesse will only work with the weapons given. Hamaji fans are not Exotic weapons, seeing as I can hold them and my character does not have the proficiancy for them. Also, Sadly fans are not duel weildable (which would look awesome) as far as I am aware.

The feats: Weapon Finesse, Imp. Crit, etc do not work with Layonara custom weapons

Which is sad because Weapon Finesse with a katar would be awesome

I believe I heard that the weapons would work if we could "fix" it so the game would ready a Fan as it would a Dagger. Then you could take a feat in dagger (Ie: Imp Crit) and it would affect the fan as well (because deep down, it's really a dagger). The down side is that this then opens up two weapons to be improved with one feat.

Are the statistics for the two weapons similar?

Nope. A fan does 1d2 I believe whereas a Dagger does 1d4.

Would it be possible to make fans magical daggers that deal 1d4-2? This could keep fans more strictly as fun RP weapons rather than simply a cosmetic change to daggers.

hamaji's fan does 1d2 but it has a magical +1d10 slash, so it's quite a powerful weapon.

I believe the proper stats on a fighting fan are:

1d6 (slashing) 19-20 x2

A real fighting fan is a fairly serious thing made of metal and not really usable as a fan at all.

A dagger is not a proper substitute as it deals piercing damage.

The "fashion accessory" fans that we have now are not real "fighting fans" they're well, fashion accessories. The item that everyone is refering to "Hamaji's Fan" is, in effect, a magical fashion accessory and not a proper fighting fan.

There are no proper fighting fans in Layonara, or really anywhere in NWN due to the limitations bioware placed on custom base types and how weapon specific feats work.

There are 0 fighting fans available.

It is very easy to get a fashion accessory fan. Which you can also fight with if you so choose.
