Attribute Explanations
« on: March 09, 2006, 09:17:10 am »
I was reading through the 'Tips for Villains' thread, and it got me thinking.  Is there some kind of guide out there that explains the numbers of each of the attributes and what it means.  I.E. when does the number of strength grant the character 'super human strength,' what number of intelligence makes the character so genius that he can no longer operate within society, what number of dexterity gives the character 'cat-like reflexes?'

Such guides often argue and rarer still will any agree on any one point. Perception of persons, alignments, places varies greatly a flaw or benefit of human nature. However if you would like I'll throw my chips onto the table while I'm brushing up on other material.

You can if you like.  I was just wanting a general guide to go buy for future reference.

I generally considered 10 to be average (by human standards) and based the abilities from that point.
INT is vaguely correlative to IQ when you multiply it by 10.

Yes... 10 is average.

But ability points are kind of weird... 18 str would theoretically mean "among the strongest in the world", but here, a lot of fighters have that. :P

yeah, but you have to remember, "Adventurers"  (and that's what every PC is) are a step above the rest, so while it may be common among adventurering warriors to have the 18 str, it is not common amongst the general populace, or even average soldier.  and adventurers, as has been said many times, make up a very, very small portion of the world's population.

Also, as Dorg suggested, by DnD standards, 10 is average.  Beyond 20 in any attribute is considered superhuman.

Ah thanks.  I've been wondering this myself.  I always considered average whatever the base stats are for a race before you add to them.  If 10 is Huam average then what is the average stats for the other races?

It would be 10 plus or minus the racial modifiers. So the average elf has 12 dex and 8 con.
