General Discussion / RE: Sorcerer: How do we play them?« on: April 12, 2005, 10:53:00 PM »
Well, Doc, we've had this discussion before
![]() I tend to view arcane magic users as allegorical to musicians. Wizards are the studious types, the precise and very deliberate and nuanced players. Classical violinists. Sorcerers are wilder and sort of "dirty" and "untrained," having a natural affinity for the art and a feel for the emotion of it rather than the theory. Rock guitarist. Sorcerers do not cast by "force of will." Clerics cast by force of will. Sorcerers cast by feel, like they empathize with the ebb and flow of magic. They read it as a bard reads the emotions of his audience. As for how they are able to identify spells cast by other mages... I guess that would be dependant on the sorcerer in question, and how they learned to control their own magic. If a person taught himself to cast spells by how they felt, that would likely be how he would identify other spells. IF he had a mentor who taught him how to control his abilities, he would likely be more studious. As for items/artifacts/etc., again, that would be dependant on how the sorcerer in question learned to control his own abilities. If he went by feel, he would likely feel a synergetic connection to powerful magical auras. As far as a preference... that depends on the ego of the sorcerer, which is not going to be the sasme from person to person. An egotistical sorcerer with the blood of a dragon in his veins would likely be highly egotistical and would feel that his own powers are superior to any given item (though he would likely covet the item anyway, owing to his natural draconic greed). I agree that sorcerers should be somewhat mysterious. "Undefined" seems a little broad. The mystery part is how they are able to innately tap the weave of magic without formal training. It places them somewhat above everyone else, in that they are more spiritually attuned to magic than other people of their race. Unfortunately, a lot of people do use them simply as "spell spammers" and artillery. The class has amazing potential for roleplay, but it has been my experience that the potential of the sorcerer often goes unrealized in favor of raw firepower. 3

Lon... the truth hurts. Especially when *you* tell it. The government hates you because you are intelligent. Give up, get a job flipping burgers until you are 65, watch Leno and don't laugh too loudly when he makes jokes about Bush. Then you can say whatever you want about the administration and no one will bother with it because you will, for once in your life, have said the proper things. In the immortal words of Bart Simpson: "Gotcha. Can't win, don't try."
On the other hand, we need folks to point out the truths, even if the truth is only seen for a few moments. "Yahoo is a part of the conspiracy." "Some recreational substances are not as bad for you as we have been led to believe." "I once blew my own @$$ off when I was smoking on the can after eating bad tacos and dropped the cigarette into the toilet before I flushed." These are priceless Karma Virus-isms and must be kept alive. Fenthon Quill would have made a great cullinary creation out of Michael Moore. Liberal Slob, lightly coated with mustard, served in a commie-red sauce. 5

Ah! Fellow thespian!
My goal is to build a travelling theatre troupe. This initial dramatic work is but a stepping stone, you see. And an actual knight or conjurer is not really needed, as you well know! That is where the acting comes in! I have the principal characters cast now, at least on paper. It remains to be seen if they have the "chemistry" that I need for this work to be successful. We shall have rehearsals soon. All I need now are the three bit-part actors, and it will be ready for pre-production! 6

Some of the best things I have seen NWN characters get attacked (and/or killed) with:
Umbrellas (evil rogue character dresses up as a lady, defends her honor with her umbrella, getting sneak attack damage) Dead Babies (used effectively as a club... again, sneak attack damage was applied, making it the most dangerous dead baby ever) A book (my wizard on another server got caught during his studies and promptly died after managing to do about 5 points of damage with his spellbook) A violin bow (bard/rogue would be deadly with this item) Wishlist: A ladies' fan (think Japanese war fan with razors in the end) A ladies' handbag (throw some ball bearings in the bottom, you got a sap.. haven't seen one in the toolset yet, but i just know someone will make one that is equippable in the weapon hand) 7

Development Journals and Discussion / "To Steal a Bride," a play by Wil Magee« on: March 27, 2005, 06:36:00 PM »
I could use some DM assistance in getting this play done. Don't have a date set yet, but I want to hold it on the stage in Hlint. Here is a basic run-down of what I would like:
-chairs, maybe 15-20, set up on the lawn facing the stage -the pawnshop guy to be temporarily moved -some set decorations (small props to indicate Town, Forest, and Evil Wizard Lair) -possibly some torches/lanterns for stage lights If possible, I would like to arrange to speak with an NPC or the like who can make such things and purchase or rent them. Thanks in advance! 9

Be it known, novice playwright Wil Magee is assembling a cast for his dramatic work, an as-yet untitled tale of two star-crossed young lovers and their misfortunes suffered at the hands of a heartless villain!
Two of the three principal characters are already cast. This is an open casting call for female performers seeking to be part of the exciting world of the stage! The female lead, Lady Nirielle, is a pure and virtuous woman, chaste of morals, keen of wit, high of birth and beloved by all who meet her. For an audition and costume fitting, please speak with Wil Magee of Hlint. There are also openings for some minor roles: Townsfolk and Demons. Three actors are needed to fill these roles. The actors will be playing both parts (Townsfolk and Demons), so versatility is a must! The Cast of Characters: Sir Larimus, a brave and noble night, beloved by all, suitor of Lady Nirielle (q.v.) Lady Nirielle, a gentle and pure lady, beloved by all and especially Sir Larimus (q.v.) Anomax, a wretched and vile conjurer of the blackest sort, conspirator and nemesis Townsfolk of The Vale, the town ruled by Lady Nirielle's father, Lord Arthos The Demon Horde, conjured by Anomax as part of his nefarious scheme The date and time of this dramatic performance is yet to be decided, pending final casting and rehearsal times. It will be free admission, but donations will be gladly accepted and, indeed, warmly welcomed! Further details concerning the dramatic work will be forthcoming and shall be posted in view of the public. 12
Development Journals and Discussion / A Conversation With A Badger (by Bucko)« on: March 04, 2005, 06:31:00 AM »
(spoken in the tongue of beasts)
I have not seen the herd in many seasons now. I miss running with the herd, feeling the leaves against my skin as we rooted for truffles. Men cannot understand this feeling... the smells of the forest and the herd, the sensation of fresh mud against the skin. No, it seems that all they understand is killing. Taking the skin of beasts for their own greed. I am nearly ready to seek out the herd again. I am losing my sense of smell, can you believe it? The stink of the man-dwellings has killed my senses. Their fires and lights have disrupted my natural rhythms, so that I can no longer sleep as I am accustomed to. I see them running around, with their weapons in their hands, dashing from one kill to the next, dragging oxen along into places the oxen do not wish to go. They force the oxen to carry huge burdens, and whip them when the beasts are too exhausted to move. These men stink of foul magic... it is a burning smell, a smell of rot like dead eggs. If I could find one of the herd... I think I could maintain my sense of balance. Old Silverback always kept me level. When the time is right, perhaps I will seek him out. He is old now, and has always been cranky... perhaps he will appreciate time spent away from the herd. He has been the leader for so long. (a noise from behind startles the pair) "Bucko, what are you doing?" "Me talk wif badger." "I am going to the crypt, would you like to come?" "Smash skallerdin?" "Yes, Bucko. Smash Skeletons. I will wait outside the cemetery." "Yuh, ok." (Bucko returns to the conversation with the badger) Well, friend... I have work to do. Some of these men are noble, I suppose. They are as opposed to the things that offend nature as I am. Some... but not all. There are men here that create these undead, and do not understand when I am offended by these abominations. Old Silverback would understand. He would take one sniff and know that these undead are things to be destroyed... an affront to all things that live. Farewell, little friend.
