General Discussion / Re: A Friendly Reminder

Cockatrices aren't far at all from Haven any more.. since the forest cuts through to the west of the Haven mines..  It's three screens at most I think, and one of them just runs across the top..

I just wanted to point out one other thing that could have happened which is someone with animal empathy might have dragged it out, then lost control of it, or forgot about it..  Or, told it to "stand its ground" not realizing it follows them to the next area  .. I know I see this happen some times and was guilty of it myself when I started here..

I always thought there should probably should be a rule about dragging dominated animals out of their area (though at this point in new rules are probably pointless) because of things like this..

And sorry about the poor horse!

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Average joe's life
« on: June 01, 2007, 05:07:32 PM »
Just a thought but in a society like this with many dieties who have their own things they govern over, wouldn't the average citizen (or really, non-cleric) be praying to whatever god she needed help from at the time (based on what was in their spere of influence?)

That would be more in line with ancient civilizations from Babylon to Rome to the Mayas, even Hindu is in some respects like this...  There could even be a case made for Catholics and Saints..  Pray and donate to Dorand if you're crafting at the time, Deliar if you're making a major transaction, Toran if you were wronged, Aeriden if you're sick, Katia if making a long journey through the woods...  That's not to say there aren't plenty who are devoted to one religion but that doesn't always have to be the case...  And there could be many who follow one religion but would make an occasional trip to another temple of an allied diety if they needed help in something more appropriate to their domains..

Comparisons to modern religions kind of don't work I think, because they tend to be monotheistic and/or exclude all other religions as false.. They may exist in the same civilization, and even be friendly, but they don't believe the other one's God exists or that the other religion has any merit.  In Layonara all dieties certainly do exist, and while a worshipper may think think the other one's followers are misguided or even dangerous they don't deny that they are worshipping a divine power..

If you want your summons to last a little longer..  As well as other things like boost spells..  "Extend spell" is a great feat to take early

I wish I'd know that with my first character..!

Beyond that learn a few spells like flame weapon, bull strength, endure elements and protection from evil to help fighters, that's more important when you're at a low level than any attack spells you can cast...  and a good way to make friends fast, since low level fighters desperately need all the help they can get.. It's actually designed really well here to make everybody need each other's help..

Can that be done without me logging in? Because I can't even get to the "loading" part with her

..Or, I do seem to be able to log in to Central, can someone catch me and keep me there before I'm booted?

(and I can't even remember now where the last area was.. i think it may have actually been either krandor or the hempstead fields)

So much L.A. bashing!

Actually they're right.. Don't bother coming here, at least unless you have really good friends to show you around, because otherwise you'll be stuck in traffic for the length of your trip.. San Franciso is really fun though

Hi.. Yeah I had those things happen before, and usually if I just hit cancel when the password window came up again it would load normally, but now it seems to get stuck.  Specifically, the password window returns on the character screen, and no matter what I do from there it crashes..   I was able to log in from a different account so I'm thinking it may have to do with the character.. Maybe..

I wasn't able to clear this up, it still crashes when I load Gudelsky.. I'm taking this as a sign I should take a break for a while but I thought I should report it in case someone else has a similar problem.

Joyrock I read exactly what you said. What you're looking for is not only here, but happens. And there's nothing keeping you from creating more of it.

Joyrock..

I think you're being unrealistic, especially for someone who hasn't been here long...  How many people do you meet in real life and suddenly make instant, deep connections?  You can't expect great role play between strangers, at least not consistently..  It's like real life..

Usually it's small talk and some activities together which lead to friendship.  In real life it might be talking about music or something, which would lead to going to a see a band together, which would lead to deep conversations about other things and becoming real friends.

In a game like this it's a casual "what do you do?" or "what do you craft" which would lead to a trip to gather something or bash something, which would lead to talking along the way, and then next thing you know the characters are good friends and involved in each other's dramas.  Or for that matter they may become enemies, or whatever else, but it's something that has to develop-- and it does, and it happens here all day every day.

That's how it seems to be at least and as far as I can tell there's plenty of that going on. If you don't see it then you haven't been here long enough. A lot of it can't be forced and has to happen organically (if someone comes up to me and starts telling me the story of their life, or a total stranger throws their drama in my face expecting me to react, I usually back away.)

Also.. And I don't know you, so this isn't about you at all but just a general comment to anyone.. But you have to be interesting and entertaining yourself to get it back from others.  If you're not getting player-player RP you may not be giving it either.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Poison again :)
« on: May 20, 2007, 07:33:48 PM »
I found this thread and thought it made sense because I was wondering the same thing..  Why can't druids use (or really, be allowed to make..) poison?

1. Druids have several spells that poison the enemy (quillfire, and, uh, poison) as well as a few others that cause rather nasty diseases (infestation of maggots, contagion..), so I can't imagine it's an issue of ethics and oaths.  As well they can summon some very poisonous spiders..

2. Druids themselves are immune to poison at level 9, which would make them a natural for acquiring and handling it.

And most of all..  And as stated above..

3. Poison is very much a weapon of nature

Obviously a neutral good druid wouldn't use it, but I think a neutral-neutral druid (or chaotic) should actually be encouraged to make and use it.

I can't imagine this would be a lot of work.. allowing them to do so would be as simple as changing the poison crafting tool to a club.  Since poison itself is barely effective as far as I can tell (unless it's being done to you..) I can't imagine this would give druids some super powerful edge, but it would give them one more weapon to use and more importantly one more craft to take up. Or is this just totally out of the question?

I don't know that the GM was correct to tell you this..  While you are a cat, you don't have a "cat brain." You still have your character's (presumedly average)  intelligence and could conceivably open a door, as you do understand how the knob works... It would be clumsy but it could be done.

Furthermore.. We are supposed to pretend these are bustling cities with thousands of NPCs.. Which would lead me to think the doors to shops and crafting halls would be swinging open and closed all day long. All a cat would have to do is wait a moment and slink in after someone enters or leaves. In the absence of another player coming or going (which might not happen if there's only a few people online) it should be only fair to let you "open" the door; after all if the game could show the activity of a busy city that door would not remain closed for as long as it does..

Though..  It is entirely likely someone in the shop or crafting hall would tell the cat to shoo (at least if they weren't an animal lover, though I would imagine in a medieval-style city cats and dogs running loose would be quite normal-- which would also possibly explain why the cat gets "hide in plain sight", they just fade into the roaming packs of alley cats.. )

General Discussion / Re: The Economy
« on: May 14, 2007, 06:05:24 PM »
I've been trying to figure out how to word this right but,

What Talan said about consumables seems true.. The impression I get is that a lot of crafters are making items that adventurers only need to buy once, and there aren't a lot consistently making and selling consumables like good potions, missles, wands, etc.

Shouldn't everyone, particularly those who don't cast spells, have a stack on invisibility potions on them to get out of trouble (or to get to their grave if things go bad ?) Or a lot of cure potions better than the ones you can buy at the temples? Or a hundred other things that can very useful, should be in every adventurers pack and disappear after use...  I don't really see people selling, buying or using all the things like that, the ones who make them that I've met don't sell them but rather just make their own supply..  Or if they are readily available they aren't marketed as much as weapons and armor, etc..

I don't know.. This just seems like an area that isn't as well covered as magic weapons and jewelry, but it could be very lucrative since the products (should) always be in demand..  Just making and selling stacks of certain potions alone should be enough to make someone rich.  Then again I'm not a crafter and I'm constantly too broke to buy anything so I'm not the one to talk..

I think there are some consumable things that would be in great demand if they were being regularly made and available in decent quantities, and if more players knew or remembered to use them..

Potions of invisibility (how can a fighter or rogue escape a losing fight without one? or get to their grave for that matter?) come to mind.. Or not-targeted heal potions which work quicker in a fight, and can be used when in a different shape..  I spend much more time than I like getting materials and making those not because I like alchemy (I'm not a crafter at heart.. its too close to work) but because I don't have a good way to buy them..

Or arrows and bolts.. Which are extremely consumable yet aren't regularly available, or if they are perhaps there's not the demand from players that there should be (I don't know)...

Basically.. What Talan said. A lot of crafting is to make stuff the average adventurer only needs to buy once. But there's a lot of very useful things like potions that everyone should be stocking up on all the time and aren't, and whether thats because crafters and guilds arent churning them out, or because people aren't buying them, I don't know.  Or if they are being made maybe it's a marketing issue.. But maybe it's those things that could really spark the economy?

I agree with Stragen above, that not only are people higher levels than before but there's not a lot of new people joining. Yes some still do, but the majority of new characters are from older players who already know how to acquire the things they need (and either how to craft it themself or who to buy it from.) This isn't doom and gloom, it's a very healthy community and I don't think any regulars are going anywhere, but there just isn't a steady stream of low level types who might buy "lesser items".

The other problem, and this may not be correct at all, but I think not all crafters are focusing on the right things. There's only so many weapons and weapon enhancements any character needs in their lifetime. However a smart adventurer should be buying a nearly endless amount of things like missles, scrolls and potions.  I hate crafting myself (well, not hate, but it creeps very close to being "work", which is what i should be doing instead of playing Layo) so if and when I have money I'd love to have a steady and reliable source of disposable things.  Right now though I don't know where I'd buy them, or what crafter specializes in making those in large and reliable batches. I do know a lot of crafters who make ability rings and iron weapons and armor though..

This goes both ways of course.. More players should be aware that these things exist and how invaluable they can be (i mean come on, every fighter type should have a bull strength and invisibility potion on hand to get to their graves in case of emergency, or escape so that grave doesn't happen... And every shapechanger should have a huge stock of the non-throwing healing potions..  And restoration! What about restoration, no one ever seems to have it..)  Most are content with the arrows from the store, except those who rely on them who tend to just make them for themselves.
Then there's wands, which are very useful but I rarely see used, and odd items that could be lifesavers (for example a cleric should made a fortune by scribing raise dead scrolls, for all those times someone dies and the cleric in the group doesn't have it ready..)

If there's a future for a continual economy on Layo I'd think this would be it.  Too many people are selling printers and no one is selling the ink. Or something like that.

Roleplaying / Re: Lying.

There has to be a limit to persuade though.. I mean you couldn't, or shouldn't, be able to talk a paladin or druid out of their core beliefs since that is so essential to who they are.. Not unless you had weeks or months of captivity to brainwash them at least..  At best a high persuade should make the target get "swept up in the moment" (like a good salesman, con man or motivational speaker would) but when they have time to consider they would fully realize and possibly even get angry about it..

Just out of curiosity if Hempstead was the only town that didn't allow monsters..  Not that it affects me but I was wondering.

I assume Mariners Hold would allow them (and there is a crafting hall there too of course..) just because it's not really possible to get to Alindor without passing through there..

And Prantz seems like it shouldn't but that would also be terribly inconvenient to say the least..

And finally are the docks of Hempstead off limits to them? As in if they were taking a boat from Vehl to Leringard, I assume they would be allowed a few moments to change ships..
