Wizard's Duel--Arcane casters welcome
« on: March 08, 2005, 07:43:00 PM »
My dear wizards, arcane wielders, and sorcerers alike.

Today, as I Dashiva and I were slinging spells at one another, I came upon an epifany.  I, an academic at heart, and now a well known scriber of spells, have decided to start an organization of like minded wizards, known as the Arcane Duelers.  We will meet to discuss, trade, purchase and sell spells to one another.  More importantly we will be seeking an opportunity to teach the young wizard apprentices the ways of the world.
To commence this organization, I am calling for all interested parties to join me in a dueling contest.  This contest will test the mettle of like powered wizards in an ability contest of the greatest magnitude.  It will test abilities in counterspelling, intellect, wisdom of spell use, and arcane power.  I will be considering rules, and I wish to have those interested to submit to me their suggestions on rules, which I will be putting together and all with sign to.  These will not be duels to the death, rather, to incapacitation and/or withdrawal of one or both parties.  Some suggested rules would be:
1)no items other than those warn
2)spells cast from memory
3)a limit to the healing opportunities/items, such as moderate healing potions limited to two per duel
4)a two round beginning where each wizard is allowed two preperatory protection spells.
5)Summons may or may not be allowed

Things such as this nature.  The intent of the Arcane Duelers is to disseminate skill, knowledge, and the wizarding world.

Please send me a note(post here)for all interested parties.   Wizards or Sorcerers or even those with mixed skills of other professions are welcome.  In a few days a location will be selected to meet, more than likely my abode in Krandor, where I can set aside space for Dueling and meeting.

Best reguards,

Elinmire Thel'dinarae

Elinmire,

I am interested to see if I qualify for these duels under your rules.  I am also interested to see what the outcome would be if I were to duel a mage more focused in the traditional repetoire, as my spells are rather non-traditional, and mostly geared towards bringing my arrows to their targets with power and accuracy.

// OOC, the inclusion of Sorcerers, while nice and all, seems to be contrary to the idea of testing one's knowledge, wisdom, counterspelling, etc., since Sorcerers technically can't pick their spells.  They wouldn't be able to "prepare" for such a match, and as such, they'd fight with what they had...which is an extremely limited selection of spells.
A 6th level Sorc. could, for example, spam out 3-4 fireballs, go invisible 5-6 times and lob magic missile 6-7 times (or one less if he throws up Shield first) without worrying about things like tactics, counterspells and such.  And if he had feats like Quicken or Maximize, look out.  Of course, there's the risk that a perpared wizard would be able to counter those spells and such, but the point is that the nature of a Sorcerer's magic doesn't necessarily lend itself to most of what it seems your contest is all about...the Sorcerer would just be dishing out raw spellpower and not using counterspelling, unless he just happened to have a counterspell rattling around in his head.
// I could be wrong, of course. :)

*Jacho reads the announcement with interest...then he remembers what his foster-da Forgan Firegard the dwarven smith told him when he was a youth.*

"Never meddle in the affairs of wizards or dragons Jacho, or anything else that can burn you alive simply 'cuz yer in the wrong place at the wrong time."

*Jacho makes a mental note to be sure he's nowhere near where this spell-flinging contest takes place...not even as a spectator.*

    ooc:
I think what Kethry is thinking of is less along the lines of an actual mage battle, but an exchange of knowledge through trial and error. What we did was far from harmful towards eachother. Harmless spells like fear, hold person, and dominate person, and a ghostly visage + magic missile combination. (Which as you know gv makes you immune to)

Common sense is all it takes and I can see this more of a learning process than an actual battle, the only rules I see that would need to be in place are both people at the same time agreeing upon which spells to cast, and ensuring proper protections are in place. (spell mantle, ghostly visage, death ward, ect)  Also the addition of things like no death magic, empowered/maximized, or issacs style spells since those run the major risk of killing someone.

Everyone I've seen signed up so far has been here for awhile and is well aware of the consequences should someone be seriously hurt, complain, or get killed and I'm confident will do everything in their power to ensure no breaking of any rules the dm team has set down occurs.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong of course Kethry.
    //end ooc

*Shiva see's the note and taps her chin with a small finger before writing below it in a fluid hand* I am interested, contact me after the auction is finished or in Pranzis, I wish to observe first before joining. -Shiva

OOC Leanthar has made it clear that there will be no PvP, and I completely respect his ruling, but I think there is an opportunity for a  congregation of wizards that will make for a realistic mages consortium.  Yes, Equinox and I were shooting spells at each other, but they were the weakers spells.  What acutally got me thinking was that Shiva taught me how to counterspell, and I never ever used it before, (EVER).  So I learned somthin completely valuable from Shiva, and as a IC academic I didn't want other mages to miss out on that info.   So, we will not be dueling in the true send of the word till we have a PvP system that will allow it.  That will be awhile, so I see the following purposes of our Group:

      1) Exchange of the following kinds of knowledge:
           a)Spells(for wizards)
           b)Spell Use and best practice
           c)Counterspelling
           d)Enemies and their spells
           e)Support arcane spells
      2) Practicing skills in counterspelling (relatively harmless)
      3) An Adventuring group to trade spells and items one to another.

To answer the aforementioned "Sorcerer's Dilemma", Any sorcerer who only knows only evocation and invisibiility is asking for trouble, so in as much as magic is his speciallity(although limited in a wizards opinion) Even a sorcerer needs to be frugal and wise in his choices of limited spellsl

So, to sum up, we will be the Arcane resource for training a mage to confront the wiles of Layonara.

Er....that assumes that the sorcerer in question is "pure" and not multi-classed..and that he is of high enough level to have greater choices.  Even so, extend my example from earlier, a 6th level sorcerer should have about 5 spells of 1st level, 2 of 2nd level and a whopping 1 at 3rd level (oh and all of those swell cantrips!). That doesn't leave a lot of room for "choosing" a well-balanced collection of spells.  My sorcerer/fighter currently knows Magic Missile, Expeditious Retreat, Shield, Magic Weapon, Burning Hands, Invisibility, Flame Weapon and Fireball.
As for how Sorcerers "choose" their spells (once per LEVEL, remember), based on how the class is designed, I usually RP them as things he discovers through experience and experimentation and/or things that are "granted" by Lucinda. My character's spells are fire-heavy, if you noticed, because it's raw, elemental and (I think) ties in with the way the Sorcerer uses magic.  There's also an evolutionary progression of sorts.  Burning Hands led him to Flame Weapon, and the two of those with Magic Missile led him to Fireball.  I'm sure that down the road he'll figure out how to do Fire Brand and the various Issac's Missile Storms and Delayed Blast Fireball down the road.  Invisibility will give way to Improved Invisibility.  Magic Weapon will give way to Greater Magic Weapon, and so forth.
Discretion and intelligence with choosing spells is a part of a wizard's life much more than a sorcerers, IMHO.
