Mistone Festival
« on: July 06, 2005, 07:38:00 AM »
I want to throw this idea out and see what everyone thinks.  How about we have a week long Mistone Festival?  I’m going to list some ideas without knowing how difficult it would be for the team to pull off:  At this festival PCs could rent a tent or chest from which to sell their wares; there could be archery tournaments, melee tournaments, ale tents, food tents, story telling, fortune telling, etc.  This would provide a great environment for PCs to interact and share their experiences.  I propose we hold it in Ft Hope since there seems to be a fairground already there.  I feel it should be a week long affair to ensure that everyone has a chance to attend at one time or another.  I understand this would take a lot of effort from the team, but I feel it would be worthwhile.  I’m sure there are players that would be willing to help out; I know I would even though my time is very limited.  Let’s see some ideas…

I do think that is a very neat idea.

We have kicked around an idea in IRC about having a bazaar type deal where people can sell their wares and what not.

Interesting. :)

I want to second this idea (or third it, I suppose)...it would be interesting to see some archery and melee tournaments, just for someone to have bragging rights.  Maybe wizards could have some sort of spell battle, match-to-the-almost-death sort of thing...I don't know...I"m making this up as I go along....

Plus, for those of us whose backpacks are getting full of small items (mostly spell components and basic crafting items), it might be nice to be ablet sell, barter, or give them away to other players who could actually use them as opposed to selling them for 1 gp at the pawnshops.

Great idea!

Before I resigned from the DM team for like the third time, I had a Contest of Champions' idea. It was basically a free-for-all tourney that was DM monitored, and usually against buffed NPCs. I never got the time to do it though.

I don't know about Mistone festival. But Midsummer carnival sounds like a splendid idea. Enterntainers, merchants, travellers should certainly be welcome. And where that happens, trouble and bandits can also be a plenty. I concur a festival/carnival would be a splendid idea.

That could be allot of fun and great for RPing. Bards can tell stories, contests, all that. But it would be allot of work for the team if we want allot of stuff added, but most of it can be done just by the players. Players can gather in one town with their oxen, and set up shops, bards can tell stories. If you really want PvP contests, those would require either a DM or scripting for an arena type environment where you are rezed upon death with in the arena if both parties have a dueling bullet equipped.

But their are other contests that could be player ran, such as scavenger hunts for various levels. I.E. levels 1-5 the right ear of a goblin scout, rat pelt, badger pelt, a jar of honey, a piece of cotton, and a skeletons knuckle. With the difficulty of items increasing in danger or just rarity of known locales their located in. Archery tournaments are not too hard to do player based, if scripting it is too much for what the team has on its plate at the moment. They are doing allot of stuff. Options would best be 3 shots, for either the most damage or most criticals in a given number of shots. Both can be tested against any plentiful near by monsters. Though a back up squad of people to mop up the left over's would be needed. Everyone can see criticals. And I think every one can see damage too, but I might not be correct on that, but criticals I know everyone can see.

You can do magic PvP in any PvP zone with standard 3rd ed mage duel rules in the magic of the forgotten realms book. If people follow the rules their should never be a death from a mage duel. Thought in NWN if doing it without an arena setting some spells would have to be limited or banned from the mage duels. IE wail of the banshee that could possibly kill the spectators as it’s an AoE save vs death with a huge area. Not sure if we have mages high enough for that to really be a factor from their level or not.

So what I am really saying is that if we really want a fair and the players are willing to put forth the effort, it can be done with minimal impact on the team. It doesn’t have to drain the team of time on current projects.  However I am pretty sure the rules say that all PvP is suppose to be RPed and a tournament or duel should be fine, and it is suppose to be monitored by a DM. But I think that if the player support is their it could be fun and require a minimal amount of extra effort from the development team. Or at least no more then they feel they can or want to put in.  Just my 2 cents worth anyway.

      Edited to make more readable

Since I brought it up her is a posting of the mageduel rules for 3rd ed, incase anyone wants to know.  Its in the form of a bard story that I did on my old server and I am to lazy to retype the same information in a more dry boaring way. Esp as this is not the RP section of the forum should it be requested later I can of course change it to fit Layo instead of hte forgotten realms.

*Evianna strode to the front of of the Elbow Bender to the clear area that she used to perform her songs and stories.  Near the front sat a odd little halfling claimed he was touched by the gift and that he was worker of magics. Evianna had hunted ettins with him and though him cute for a halfling but not truly to her tastes, his name was Ornin. The halfling wanted to hear a story of wizard and magic, and a duel. Evianna knew several stories of wizard, and magic and of the wars that often left entire regions desolite and in ruin. However seeing the hint of power lust in his eyes Evianna descided to tell the story of the mage duel.

She began to chant drawing people into the words making them see the words as if they were events they were living them self not people listening in a bar.  It was a rare manifestation of the power of her bardic song and heritage.

Combat between spellcasters are legendary,, often resulting in the destruction of castles, villages, and local terrain. In case of largescale battles, such as those between Narfell and Raumathar, entire regions of land can be destroyed resulting in barren locations such as the Endless Waste. Fearing that such acts might turn the world to little more then a magical war zone (and not wishing talented mages to destroy themselves in pointless battles), mystra altered the weave to allow for a system of combative spell casting that allowed rivals to test their strength aginst each other without causing mass destruction.  This system eventually became known as the mageduel, and every arcane spellcaster in Faerun knows how to invoke this rite.

While reckless or murderous mages perfer traditional (leathel) spellcasting to settle their diffrences, most civiized spellcasters enjoy the opertunity to prove their skill in a magedule.

In order to participate in a mageduel, a creature has to beable to cast arcane spells in the manner ofa sorcer or wizard. Spell-like or supernatural abilities do not involve the prober knowledge to initate a mageduel, nor do magical items.

When one mage challenges another, the challenger may offer the option of a mageduel. Even if the challenger does not propose the option of having a mageduel, the defender can propose it, refusing this offer is tantamount to admiting that you wish to kill your rival.

The two mages stood at arm's length, eyes closed, focusing all their attention on each other. After a moment they nodded then bagan to walk backward. Between them formed a barely visible shimmer, encompassing a sperical area between the two spellcasters.

When they were at 100 yards distant from each other, they stopped, and the shimmering field halted its growth. The moon elf raised his right hand, the first two fingers upward. The Halruaan answered with a similar gesture. The two nodded, then each cast two spells.
"For Nchaser's Gold Librram", said the elf to his opponent
"And for honor," replied the human. The two stepped into the shimmering arena.
             The mageduel had begun.

A mageduel requires preperation, which takes place in six steps.
Attunment: The participents must stand adjacent to each other and concentrate for 1 full round, attuning them selves to each other and the localities of the weave. A person may only attune themselves of his or her own free will. ( as opposed to a charm or dominated spell)

Define Size: Next determine the size and shape of the arena. The minimum size is twice the sum of the arcane caster levels of all perticipants in fet rounded to the nearest five feet. The maximum size is is a cube with sides equal to five times the product of the arcane caster level of all participants.
Define Preparation: All participants must agree on the number of rounds each mage is allowed to cast spells before the mageduel begins. The standard is 1 to 3 rounds, longer usualy results in a stalemate because the particpants are too well protected to harm each other. QUickened spells and extra spells from a haste partial action are allowed during this time, although it is considered rude to use them.
Prepare for dueling: The participants space theselves equally around the permeter of the arena and use the alloted preperation time to cast spells upon themselves. the only spells that can enter the arena from the outside in this manner are touch spells and spells that effect the caster; all others are suppressed as if within a antimagic field.

Enter the Arena: Whent he preparation time ends, all participants step into the arena at the same time. A participant that does not enter on time defaults on the mageduel.
Begin the mageduel: One all participants have entered the arena, the mageduel begins.

All damage in a mageduel is subdual damage and it is impossible to die in a mageduel. Leaving the arena results in being disqualified, even if pushed out of the arena by magical forces or summoned creatures. Magic items that directly attack a oppenent violate the intent of the mageduel and disqualifies the offending mage. All damage causes half damage. You may end a mageduel by defeating the opponent, removing opponents from the arena or leaving yourself and forfitting, being disqualified, mageduels automaticaly end after 1 hour and id declared a draw, or if all perticipants declare it a draw the duel ends.

The elf quickly chanted and began casting a fireball, the fire growing between his rapidly moving hands, the human quickly fired off a fireball of his own as a counterspell. As the elves spell failed, the human quickly switch smooothly to a lightning bolt, which sizzled across the arena striking the elf, making his hair dance as the electricity danced thru his body.  The elf started to cast Explosive Cascade sending bouncing  flame balls across the arena into the human. In turn the human began to cast Fire spiders to send a swarm of fine fire elementals to attack the elf. However the elf having this spell sepll prepared used it as a counterspell, and retaliated with a volley of magic missiles, which shatterd the humans shield causing it to wink out of existance from the multitude of penetrating projectiles. The human again brought a fireball into existance between his hands and as it grew he noticed the elves hands forming a spell, but not a dispell or fireball to counter it, confused for a moment he realized the elves spell as the fireball left his hands streaking across the arena just as the elf smiled in victory and his translocation trick sprang into existance switching his and the humans place. The human took the full brunt of his own fireball as he poped into the spot occupied by the elf only moments ago. Seeing the elf  now casting Steeldance spell enchanting several daggers to becoem medium flying animated objects to attack him. The human took a step back thru the shimmering arena wall, forfitting and declaring the elf the victor and owner of Nchaser's Gold Libram.
