Various Special Subraces

Seeing as it's difficult to tell, I was hoping some of you could help me out on this.

It can be difficult to tell the difference betwen various types of surface elves, for example, depending on how they are RP'd.


What I am curious is about, is how many PCs are there of the special subraces? I'm going to list a whole bunch, and hopefully someone can give me some sort of vague description of how prominant they are amongst Layo.

The subraces in question:

Wemics (k, obviously there are maybe like 2 or 3 of those, you don't need to respond)
Sea Elves
Brownies
Orcs
Half Ogres
Half Giants
Strongheart halfings
Ghostwise halfings
Forest gnomes
Deep gnomes
Wild Elves
Wood elves
Sun elves
Gray Elves
Gold Dwarves
Goblins
Duergar
Teifling
Aasimar
Dark elves (actually, don't bother to tell me)

I'm not looking for really accurate numbers or anything. A response like, "I have seen lots of Drow," would suffice for the various subraces.

Also, what is ECL? It has something to do with how fast or slow you level up, right? Any other info would be appreciated.

The most drow I've seen online at a time on one server was 7, which was quite alot considering there were only about 15 people on in total at that time.

The reason I asked is that I've actually never seen most of these.

Some half giants, a couple goblins, two svirfneblin....One wild elf...that's all i can think of.

Oh yeah, a wemic and some brownies, too.

I honestly couldn't tell you the difference from looking at a PC what type of elf they are. I played in a party of 3 wild elves once. I was new and they were going into the crypts. This same idea is true for the different halfling and gnome type also ... I couldn't tell you if i've met one of the subraces.

I haven't seen a wemic yet

I've seen four different PC half giants.

I've seen plenty of drow ... making the race over done imo.

Met a few goblins ... three to be exact.

I've also met a couple of teiflings which is fun considering I play an Aasimar ... bth of them were fun RPers that didn't take it personally but gave me a ration of crap right back

I have yet to meet a half ogre.

Halflings - I could not tell you the difference between the various halflings.

Elves - Same. Luna is a Wood Elf and I know a couple of Wild Elves. Other then that, I don't know.

Dwarves - Again the same.

Duergar - Never have seen one

Gnomes - I have seen on Deep Gnome.

Goblins - 2 or 3

Half Giants - 4 or 5

Teifling - Couldn't tell you as IMO they are not RPd

Aasimar - Same. No RP so I have no idea who or what an Aasimar is ICly.

Brownies - 4 I think.

And too many drow. Too too many.

Yeah, that was thing...you can't really tell when there is no physical distinction between subraces...Like the elves (minus drow) and halfling ones.

I guess that's why I was asking. Some people RP their parts very well though, and it's much easier to tell their race. like i'm *pretty sure* I've met a wild elf before, just based on his RP and the way he dressed. (well..lack of dressing. heh)

I've seen almost all of the brownies, in passing. Never seen a sea elf though, have any been accepted?

A shame on the drow restriction, since I haven't played one yet.
But as long as the majority keep choosing aasimar over tiefling, I'm
all good ^^

Gold dwarf - unique. Yet to see one
Duergar - uncommon. I know one who is on regularly though
HalfOgres - very rare. People tend to choose Halfgiant over this one
Strongheart halfings - uncommon
sun elves - very rare
deep gnome - uncommon. I know one who is on regularly
gray elves - uncommon

these are most of the less seen ones during my times, the other subraces
are more common or very common

I play a Wildelf, Ghostwise Halfling, and have just been approved for a Sea Elf

I have seenquite a few half ogres and half giants,

a few goblins, Assimar, and tieflings

I have seen the most woods elves and Drow of the elven subraces

only one Duergar

but i don't think i have seen many Strongheart Halflings

I've got 2 goblins a ghostwise halfling and now a Svirfneblin as well.  I like the subraces for the reason that their race can give an extra dimension to the RP which you wouldn't get otherwise.  In the case of Buppi my ghostwise halfling...her subrace and her past and the story which has risen from it has taken more than a year to develop and its the main driving force of the character.

This kind of disappointed me too.  I've been waiting for more people to remark on Raye's eyes since I started playing her...  It's like people can't be bothered to right-click your character sometimes (I don't think it's my duty to tell everyone who walks past me what I look like when I've *put it in the description*).  I'd think that glowing eyes would incur more of a suspicious reaction than that dark elf walking down the street, personally.  It's hard to RP it when nobody bothers to notice.

Wel, it's a catch 22 because some people find it rude to right click someone to see 'who' they are without RPing the information themselves ... and most people do not have a full accurate description of themselves listed and right clicking wouldn't tell you anything if you did. This has been my problem with RPing because i've found out a few times that someone was a drow only from talking to them ... even their picture wouldn't have made it obvious.

I figure if the character has himself hooded or hidden behind a helmet it is better to role play without right clicking for a description. Twixel does not trust or like drow, he actually still has a fear, but he only reacts to those that are openly displaying their race or have given themselves away. This could have been done through native language use or someone else commenting his/her race. Twixel has refused to go adventuring with groups that have a known drow present but has actually travelled and aided a drow unknowingly until after the quest when he finds out who he has been travelling with, at which time he makes an excuse to make a quick getaway.
On the other hand, many times he is mistaken for a surface gnome in which he quickly corrects those individuals letting them know he is a Svirfneblin from the deep deep caves.
This is an example of how I role play one character, its all up to you as the individual on how you wish to role play and have fun.

I agree. I had a tiefling on my old server and I didn't know tieflings were a valid subrace so when I rolled her up I did the + dex - cha on my own with stats so in game I was very uncharismatic, but since their are no ugly heads every one always told me how attractive I was, and the head I used did have glowing red eyes. My description on the char page also stated she had glowing red eyes, long boney fingers, and a pale almost dead pallor to her skin, as well as an aura that makes people uncomfortable. And people always telling me how attractive I was, I finally started asking them if they needed a cleric because they must have suffered some head trauma recently. I was ugly and I knew it. If I remember right my Cha was 6.

I think I mentioned it when we first met. But got side tracked with your attitude and the bickering that was going on between you and Luna at the time. But I know that’s one reason Ael is convinced to this day you are evil. One thing that disappoints me is that more people don't put a description in their bio; it’s either the default or their life history. I shouldn't know your life history I RP with you to find that out if I care. But I should know what you look like, especially if your picture is questionable like allot of elf pictures might or might not be drow pictures. I think it should be mandatory to have a description in your bio.  And if their is a descriptions that describes their face and they are wearing a full helm and plate you might want to check if you can tell it’s a drow under all that armor. Hint if they talk do you hear and recognize the dialect or accent.  

With Seh'Spar I totally forgot you were a Tiefling after playing with Ael around you I knew you were evil and didn't really think about the why. But to bring it up now would be a bit odd, but she will pry grill you on it latter a real live tiefling to research and experiment on. I mean get to know and study; yeah that’s what I meant honest. Can you have me that scalpel and those tongs please?

Edit: I play a wild elf Ael, and a Wood elf(under a curse leading to the actual gray elf sub race) It made no since to have a wood elf sub race for a char that was cursed in the very areas a wood elf is blessed esp since the curse and lack of strength and dex caused her to be exiled. She is inteligent and charasmaatic, having been touched by Ilsare at the moemnt of her fathers death so strong was his love for her it touched her and she transfered that love to Seh'Spar, who now worships Ilsare much to the farther disgrace of her family. And yes it was approved that way, I asked before I created her back ground. I can't fight my way out of a wet paper sack, but I sure have fun RPing Seh'Spar and I hope everyone that takes time with her does as well.

Maybe I missed it, but this should be clearly spelled out in the character creation docs on the website.  I didn't put any description for my character, then saw other people's long descriptions and said, "Damn. Should have done that."  Then later on the forums I read that only physical characteristics should be put in the description and then felt glad I diddn't follow someone else's lead and put a novel in there.

What do you think of putting an "only visual descriptions" note in the player info section?

Dang....Teefal keeps posting things I'm about to say....

It would be nice if people would use that space during character creation to post a little physical description about their character...and a little posting under the Character Creation thread would be helpful too...I wish I had known, or I would have done a bit more with Ketzia.

Even if someone is wearing a helmet, it's nice to have that physical description so you can RP it when they take their helmet off. This can actually be really important to a character as it might clue you on to race or some other aspect of their character (blind, scar, etc.) that would affect RP.

And while I appreciate people putting lots of info in that spot, I've found that I typically don't have time to read it all ingame, and sometimes don't if it relates to history.  Not saying it's a bad thing and I appreciate their effort, but sometimes it's just a bit much.

I might look at a profile to see an image. But I will not read much in to it. If I see more than a few sentances in the description I just go right past  it. If it says something like-short with bright blue eyes, green skin tone and 2 horns on both sides of the head.

I get that, remember that.

But when the char bio is there, I dont read it. A) cole is not going to stand there looking at nothing why his maker is reading the bio. B)shouldn't know where one was born by looking at them. Ir if they are stubborn, or gallient(SP).
