Sereth's Black Book

Hlint?  I'm in Hlint?  Oh well.. I will manage.

I spot a man in crimson robes near the local temple.  Being rather hungry and short on gold, I attempt to snatch a few coin from his pockets.  Never being very good at it, he caught me with my hand in his pocket.  Scared that he would call the guards, I tried to flee, but his grip was quite strong.  He instead started laughing and said that I couldn't spoil his day or something.  I think this guy is crazy.  So I asked him, "Uh. Yeah, ok buddy. If you are so happy then why not let go of my wrist, eh?"

Now I know he's crazy.. for instead of letting go OR calling for the guards.. he begins to tell me his life story....

After becoming rather intrigued, I listened to his tale.  I found out his name is Regnus, but he never mentioned if there was anything more to his name.

He didn't let go of my wrist until a woman walked up, who I now know to be his wife Shariel.  Before he turned from looking at Shariel, I thanked him for not turning me in and slipped away.

***A few days later***

I was walking around trying to get familiar with this new town and asking some folks where I can find some work.  I am getting hungry after all.  I was filling my canteens when fellow in red robes walks up.  It was the same guy that had caught me trying to steal from him.  I mentioned I was a bit hungry and he said he was going to the local inn, so I went with him.  Soon afterwards, a creature I've not seen before comes lumbering in the inn and walks up to Regnus.  Supposedly this is his bodyguard.  I haven't figured it out yet, but this creature follows him around for some reason.

Growing weary of the noise in the inn, I mentioned that a lady at the courthouse had told me of some papers that she lost.  She was giving out good coin to the first to return her papers.  The other two agreed to come with me.  Needless to say, with this huge hulk of a creature and Regnus' connection with his deity, we accomplished her errand.  We travelled around a bit, but Regnus wanted to get back to Shariel, so we decided to split up for a time being.

I have found that traveling with Regnus and Varghgot, Regnus' muscle, is worth while.  I am able to do things with them that I couldn't do alone.  Although Regnus is a bit pious at times, Varghgot's desire to smash gobo's and summarily gnaw on their bones offset's it.  Actually, Var's tastes aren't just for goblins, but anything with any type of meat on the bone.

While we were trying to make some items in Hlint, we were approached by several city guards.  I left my acquaintances a moment, slipped behind a building and hid.  After a few moments, I returned after I heard who they were looking for.  I guess they were after some lady who had killed someone.  I asked what she looked like... and after not recognizing the description, I told them I had not seen her.  Neither had Regnus or Varghgot.  I don't really care one way or another.. even if I had seen her, I wouldn't go blabbing it to these guards.  I don't know this woman, but I do know that the law is blind to right and wrong.  She may or may not have killed someone.  Here I am rambling on about this whole incident and I don't care one way or another.  After hearing we had not seen her, the guards moved on and started asking other folks in the town.

We continued gathering materials and such to make items we need.  We headed to the west of town and ran into what appeared to be a mob of sorts.  Several people were asking about this same woman and were actively hunting her.  Her name is Ketzia or something such as that.  Growing up under the tight grip of laws, I understand that there needs to be some order in the world, but to let a mob such as this run around just disgusts me.  I did tell them I had not seen her, though I would not have told them under any circumstance if I had.  I did leave Regnus and Varghgot to talk to them.. I went down towards the campfire and waited on them to join me.  I won't be a party to upholding law, but I won't be a party to mob rule either.  I pity the woman they are after.  I hope the fates are kind to her.

While I was practicing hiding around town, I saw Varghgot walking through.  I knew it was him because no one that I've ever seen walks with a lumbering gait like his.  I went up to him, but he didn't recognize me at first, so I took off my hood.  He hadn't seen Regnus around.. who knows where he's at.  Perhaps he and Shariel went somewhere.

We had gone down into the sewers to collect some venom sacks from the small spiders.. and when we came out we were beset by a host of undead.  There were a number of other people in town trying to fend them off.  The healer from the temple was most helpful in ridding the town of the undead.  The graveyard, however, had a strange green fog and some flames issuing from the ground.  The healer was able to clear it away, but those who had helped to fight the undead wanted to go into the crypts to investigate.

After making our way to the lower level, some got antsy and pushed forward.  As such many of them fell dead.  I was able to elude the danger and to my amazement actually made it out of the crypt without getting injured.  Seeing as how many folks who were more capable than I were among those who died, I was quite pleased with myself.  We waited around for the healers to restore those who had died back to health, and then pushed onward... a good bit more cautious.

Now I am unsure if it was alive or not when those in the front of the group entered, but I saw the corpse of a large, grotesque fleshball with eyes all over.  There was also some type of summoning circle with writing all over it.  Come to find out, someone was able to discern that it was Drow language.  It seems that they had been summoning undead there, and then somehow teleporting them to other locations, such as up in town.  There wasn't much else learned however, except that I was able to better hone my evasive techniques and fighting prowess.  Varghgot also seemed to improve his prowess while fighting the undead.  It is a shame Regnus could not have joined us, for there were many in the group that could have used his healing techniques.

It will be interesting to see if we were able to quell these attacks....

It would seem Regnus is beset on creating this garden of his.  He asked me to accompany him to the Blood Desert to search for some obscure desert flower.  When I showed up to go with him, there were a number of other people there to help.

We made our way through the outskirts of the desert and moved deeper into the blowing dunes.  We journeyed a bit too far, for we encountered some of the fastest and deadliest scorpions I've ever seen.  I only wish I could have gathered some of their venom.  I, of course, escaped death's grasp, but Regnus and Varghgot were forced to return to the Bindstone in Hlint.  Shortly thereafter, it was decided to leave the desert, since the scorpions posed too great a threat.

Once back in town, Regnus apologized for almost getting me killed.  But then he mentioned that he was wanting to fetch another flower on Dregar.... In Pranzis of all places.  Angry at the thought of possibly going back there, I walked off to cook some fish I had caught.  I am still debating on whether or not I should return to that accursed city.  I don't know when he is wanting to go there, but I probably should prepare msyelf.

Where to begin?  I haven't written much, but then there hasn't been much going on.  Regnus continues to seek rare and obscure flowers for his garden, all to exalt his goddess.  He had mentioned something about going to Pranzis, but fortunately he didn't go.

The other day, I found myself staring at the bindstone in Hlint again from being out on one of Regnus's flower trips.  I turned around and noticed what appeared to be a woman wearing all black.  I've been around enough people to notice that she was different than many here in Hlint.  I approached her and began to question her.  She answered my questions with retorts and inuendo, so I began dealing some back to her.  She never did give her name, but I later found the bard that she had told me about and questioned him as to her identity.  To my surprise he was actually forthcoming with her name.

I will refrain for now to mention her name here, but something about her intrigued me.  If I should happen on her again, I will ask her some more questions.
