    Some Queries
    « on: September 13, 2005, 01:49:00 AM »
    Hello there. :)
Coming from a non-rp environment, i feel like giving rp a try.
i have some questions about the world.
Sorry if the questions were answered before

    *are levels capped?
    *are haste boots available?
*is there a skill script in place that prevents carrying over of skill points?
    *are there ridable horses?
*are there many quests to do for low level characters
*restrictions/changes to classes, feats, spells? (i believe these are in the handbook? i'll be reading it later)

well, basically that it i guess
anything i should know that is not stated in the handbook? besides the usual player behavior rules, stay IC, use tells for OCC & getting a approved character.

    Cheers, :)

      * No (sort of).  You have to get approval for 21, 30, and 40 through character quests.
      * No (not that I know of.)  But there is a very nice road system that gives you Expeditious Retreat while on it.
      * No.
      * Not yet.  Perhaps eventually.
      * Many, but most require a group effort.
      * Yes, RP restrictions to Clerics, Paladins, Druids.  DND toward Druid/Monk/Paladin level progression.  See the handbook, there's more.

Also, even though the handbook says you can be from anywhere, try to stick with a character from this world and not the Forgotten Realms or some other setting.

Levels are sort of capped. You will need
to get approved for Epic levels.

      No boots of haste.
No script that messes with skillpoints as far as I know.
Yes, there are horses for Paladins at some lvl.
      Check the Calendar for Quests.
All PrC classes are restricted, can only get them
      through Character Developement Quests. Spellchanges
are in the handbook as well as feats I believe.

You don't need skill points for crafting--don't waste them

I put skillpoints in armorcrafting and I don't
regret it. Helps with the armor configuration.

If you are going to be wearing full plates or
other expensive armors, the skill points will
save you some trouble and money if you  often
like to change the way you look.

the only turn off for joining the server is the 12month rule for ECDQs :(

It'll take you that long, don't worry.  I've been playing a month and I'm only level 6.  The way the scale works, you need to get levels 1-6 again just to get to level 7, and then 1-7 again just to get to 8.

Don't be concerned about it.  The idea here is RP, not how fast you can get to Epic.

i guess its a huge transistion from non-rp to rp for me

i was expecting a slow level progression(considering you play almost everyday in a week) from pre-epic to epic to be like lv 1-20 in 2-3months, lv 21-40 in another 3-4months.

i guess i'm not the type of player suited for such a lvling scale in a persistant world

anyone here successfully made the transistion?
would love to hear your experience.

besides 6-15 is the most fun anyway :P

There is a custom xp chart used here that more closely resembles the xp charts in 2nd editon AD&D than the 3.0/3.5 charts.   Most levels the amount you need to gain the next level doubles your current xp.  Untill a certian point where it stops doubling every level and stays the same for a while (at which point the levels are 320,000 xp apart.)

Monster and quest xp is scaled for the xp charts, but doesn't mean you're gonna level fast.   Getting to level 5 is quick (could probably do it in a day if you had a while.) Then leveling drastically slows around 8, 9, 10, 11.  Ah well, come find out.

The reason Layo is a great PW (with durability) is that theres a ton of fun stuff to do other than bash stuff.

I transitioned and still find it quite enjoyable. I'm used to playing RP worlds but was not sure I would like the slow XP progression because I feel like I need to see a level in order to feel i've accomplished something outside of the RP aspect. What i'e found is that i'm enjoying the RP aspects fo the game ten fold from any other server. Everyone has a great RP personality for their character and makes them enjoyable to talk to just to learn about them. Leanther and the GM team have placed a great story for all to be involved in if you want as well as fun side quests and adventures from low to high level.

I recommend that you talk to everyone you can in chracter and create a personality for your PC that is easy for you to play out. Find people of like personality (which really is easy to do) and begin adventuring with them. The server can be solo'd but it is easier to deal with combat in groups ... a lot easier. Then sit back and enjoy the Layo ride :)

Talan is totally right.  there is sooooo much more to do other than bash stuff (and i play bashing-type characters).  there are performances, businesses, church affairs, and more, especially if you want to start up something of your own.  read the handbook, the forums, and get in game and just spend the first few weeks talking to other people in character.  and yeah, i've played here since february (and, granted, i don't get to play as much as some, but more than others) and my primary character is all of 13th level.  and let me tell you, you'd be surprised at how strong a character above tenth is on a 'low power' server, though, even still, venturing out alone into unknown territory is hideously dangerous.

if you have the time to play, you will find getting to 7th or 8th level not too difficult once you have made some steady adventuring companions.  however, getting on to 9th and beyond becomes exponentially difficult compared to the first 8.  but hey, it's between 7th and ninth level that most characters come into their own on Layo, garnering at least some minor reputation.  beyond that, try your best to get in on a few quests and events.  not only is the XP good, the RP, adventure, character building, and relationship building make the experience well worth the time, everytime.

okay, that's my two cents, have fun, see you in game!

Heya CrystalCrazy... I am about to list for you all of the reasons that I love Layonara. I can see you're probably used to faster leveling and I'll go ahead and tell you why slower leveling is great too.

                  •  The slower you level, the more time you have to really get to know your character. Think about it, if you go from level 1 to 10 in three or four days you'll never get to appreciate simple spells like Magic Missile or Mage Armor. And the days when your fighter only had twelve or thirteen HP.
                  •  Currently we have several Epics. And many more about to become Epic. Triba, Eld, Ta'k, Reggub, Rhizome, Plenarius, Enzo, Rufus... and the guys about to go Epic... Xiao, Talan, Athus (whenever he decides to show up again), Arestes (same), Kasha, Quint, Maddison, Ahndar, Aleister...
                  •  Unlike other servers where Epic characters are Uber powerful and seem to fall from the sky like rain, here on Layonara they're rare, and that makes them a sort of status symbol. Also... the nice thing about here is even when you're Epic you can still get your rump handed to you about a thousand different ways.
                  •  One of the things that keeps me coming back and is quite addicting. Is the crafting system. It's just fun to develop your wizard into scribing or potions making...
                  •  Exploration is incredible once you find a way to get around without having to fight every single monster.
                  •  TONS of custom monsters... don't even get me started naming them.
                  •  The subraces are also awsome. Where else can you play a Wemic?
                  •  Spell Components to give it spice and feats to negate the components needed.
                  •  And quests... oh the quests! Where to begin?! Well on quests and quest series that usually last between 2 and 4 hours each you can.... fight armies of undead, stop vampires from ressurecting an army of undead, stop a demon from opening a gate and returning to our plane, talk to a Shadown Dragon in the Underdark, talk to the King of Dragon, try to ally the dragons together, fight a dragon if you darn well please, find the Heart of the Elements to restore the Temple of Light, fix a crazy gnome's machine, stop an Evil-Part Construct-Gnome from turning everyone into constructs, destroy a bloodwell, catch an Imp who's stealing everyone's clothes, track down a theives guild or a powerful magical item... there's more too I'm just listing the obvious stuff....  :)
                  •  Of course there's also general RP. Listen to a bard tell a story, or sing a song. Have a drinking contest. Smoke a pipe with your old friend and tell tales of heroes and heroines. Start a Guild for Crafting, a Guild to Smite Evil, a Guild for Magic, a Guild for Pie...  :o  (Still waiting on that one)
                  •  If that doesn't satiate your hunger for fun there are quests you can do on your own time. Fight the Ogres and collect the Oil of Vrukas! Deliver some Letters to three crazy brothers. Get the Lesser Darksoul Essence. Kill the Rat Man! Clear out the goblin scouts from the outskirts of town. Find weapons to donate to Ft. Llast and Haven... the list goes on and on...
                  •  I once spent ten minutes RPing with an ox. (No the ox did not speak back, was fun anyway though)
Point is, leveling slowly can honestly be really fun. Level quickly and there will still be challenges but then you'll have missed all of the fun things that happen to lower levels along the way. And trust me, whether you would believe it or not, almost everything you'll do in Layonara, is RP. (Fighting, crafting, talking, exploring, gathering, hunting, it's all RP)
Hope to see you in game! ZV-
*Looks up and sighs* Sad isn't it... it's longer than my essay already... need to get back to work on that...

I was turned off by the slow leveling thing at first too.  But I have been level 9 for a while now and couldnt be having more fun.  Really when it comes down to it, I dont really look at levels anymore.  I just talk to people and we go do something.  Jump in and try it out for a while before making any assumptions though.

Who's in charge of PR?  And if someone already is, can we make this guy official assistant?  As if I didn't like playing already, he made me sad that I have classes all day... ;)
