Rakan Galey - The raging orc
« on: October 15, 2005, 01:42:00 AM »
After many days of travel, Rakan eventually stands in front the wooden gate to Hlint.
Rakan looks to the guards positioned at the gate, "This Hlint?". The guard nods and replies, "Yes, it is." Rakan responds smiling, "Well then this right place. I seek work. Dragon called me." The guard shrugs "If you say so. You can enter if you wish but if you break the town rules you will be escorted to jail."
Rakan walks into the town and starts to looking around, first thoughts being to find some work. It does not take him long to find some odd jobs around town, it seems a good fighter is in reasonable demand. He is pleased with himself as he starts to do the odd jobs and soon he accumulates a decent amount of gold. His face beams looking at the gold. The first gold he ever earned.
He takes the gold and immediately goes to the merchant house he saw earlier and buys himself a new axe. He looks at the axe thinking "Not the best, but would do for now. Me need place to practise. If town need good fighters, me must be best."
He walks out the north gate and see a tower on the small hill "That good place."
He puts his pack down and slowly starts to swing the axe in different combination. Then his movements increase in pace and it is evident that he has great strenght as he uses the axe with the same speed and ease as another would use a dagger. For three hours he continues to move and use different combinations. The sweat is rolling down his arms and chest, but it does not seem like he tires.
Eventually he sits down and gulpes some water from a canteen. He ponders "Glanar taught me to fight good with axe. But he dead, me must find buddy to practise with. Me not forget what Glanar showed, me will practise that and be best axe fighter."
He lies down on the grass and stares at the sky wondering about his mother. With that thought in his head, he falls asleep.

After a couple of hours he wakes up feeling very hungry.
He thinks, "Me must find food and see if someone will pay for good fighter"
With that thought he goes back into town.  After a few moments he sees a group of people gathered in front of the orc bashers shop.
He sits down and starts talking to them. There is a very pretty lady amongst them called Angelica. Soon they hear someone crying and after some investigation they find something is down in the well. The group decides to go down into the well. In the depts of the well they face some crabs and other bad things. After running around in the well they find it goes deeper and gets attacked by goblins. After many hours and many battles they hear singing and laughing. Following the sound they find themselves in the caves surrounded by goblins dancing.
It seems we were part of some elaborate game or bet in honor of a party for Shadon.
He starts talking to Angelica who speaks of gods and worshipping. He does not understand what she is talking about. She said she will explain it to him later. She speaks some funny words and tells him to follow her out of the caves. He starts running after her and what he cannot understand is that even though he nearly stepped on a goblin, it seemed like it did not see him. He finds it very odd and when asking Angelica about it she said she turned him invisible by using magic. Once again he frowns not understanding what she means.
After getting some food he returns to the little hill north of town and starts practising his moves with the axe again. For hours he trains, refining the moves and doing it quicker than before. Eventually he falls down tired and lying there thinks about what Angelica spoke of again.
"Gods.....magic......what are these people talking about?", with that thought he falls asleep again.

He wakes up the next morning feeling very hungry, runs to the lake to hunt some deer. Making a small fire he grills the meat, as the kind elven lady has shown him the other day. He smiles thinking, "Hunting deer cost no gold. Much better than wasting gold at inn. Me must find pointy ear lady and ask about fish. Fish taste nice".
Returning to the hill after eating, he starts practising his movements again. The next moment a broad smile crosses his face, "Now me understand balance, Glanar would be proud of this move". He does the same move again succesfully. He spins in a circle swinging his axe in a wide arc. He continues to practise this move until the sweat pours down his body. He takes a canteen and drinks some water thinking, "Me must try this in real battle". He walks down the hill and sees some orcs in the distance. Immediately he gets angry just thinking of his mother and with a raging scream charges the orcs.
He faces three orcs and without thinking he spins in a circle like he practised minutes ago. After completing the spin, he lands and looks around for any forthcoming attacks. He sees nothing but three dead bodies around him. With a smirk on his face he walks away, "Me did not even feel me axe hit them. Me must practise more, but me is getting much better".

Walking into town he sees another pointy ear lady dressed in green talking to an orc lady. He walks up to them asking them if they know of the Sielwood caves. The orc lady says she knows where it is and actually needs some copper and tin from the cave and would go with him. He follows them into the woods. Near the cave entrance they get attacked by spiders, but they quickly kill them.
As they enter the cave, they get attacked by kobolds, but with deadly effiency all the kobolds are killed. Deeper into the the cave they go and face more kobolds and gnolls, as well as big blocks of slime. None of these however seems to be a problem for the group as they quickly dispatch all the enemies.
The orc lady takes out a pick axe and starts hitting the copper vein. He looks at her and ask her what she is doing. She explains that she is mining copper ore to make rings and weapons. The orc lady hits the rocks multiple times and then picks up a piece of rock. He offers to help and she hands him the pick axe. With his greater strenght he quickly mines many pieces of copper nuggets. The lady is very impressed and comments that he is a natural.
After mining copper and tin for a while they return to Hlint, where the orc lady shows him how to smelt copper. After watching her carefully, he tries to smelt some copper himself and to his surprise was able to make half the nuggets into shiny copper ingots. He smiles broadly, very proud of the fact that he learned a new skill today. He decides that he will go back to the cave to get more copper nuggets and continue to practise this new skill. He asks her about making a better axe, but she says she does not know that skill and that he should ask someone else about that.
He thanks her and walks away thinking that he will need to find someone who knows about making weapons. Perhaps he can then make a better axe.

Waking up as the sun touches his face, you see small smile appear on his face. It is the smile of someone who is free. Free from doing what other people tells him do, free from being forced to fight in battles, free to do whatever he choose to do.
He strecthes and picks up his axe and starts to swing it in complicated movements. The axe becomes a blur in the fast movement. Soon you he is dancing around the area, he looks as graceful as a panther in his movements. And equally as deadly with that axe. He must have some strenght to swing that axe so easy and fluently. After an hour or two he jumps into the lake and washes all the sweat of him and then walks to town.
He has heard that people will trade for bones and found some bone men in the crypts on the side of town. So that was his first task for the day, collect some bones. You see him enter the crypts in with a couple of swings all the bone men are in hundred pieces. He picks the bones up and smiles thinking that this is too easy. It takes him a while to fill a couple of boxes and he walks to the bench outside.
It seems a lot of people gather at the benches to trade and discuss differenent things. It does not take long to trade the bones for some bottles that make wounds go away. While sitting there a man walks up to him and ask him what armor he uses. He shows him his copper chainmail. The man tells him that he can supply him with a much better one. He looks at the iron half-plate and feels the much harder armor and smile, "Me want one of these. What you want for it?" The man asks what Rakan can offer, to which he replies, "Me get bones, rocks, skins, wood or coins, but me not have much coins."  After a while the man agrees to trade some bones with him for the armor. He mentions numbers which Rakan does not understand.
The man slowly teaches him how to count using his fingers. Rakan seems very pleased that he now can count. This would make life a lot easier in trading with people. He gets up and walks towards the crypts to start gathering the bones. The man wants many boxes of bones. Rakan wonders what the man wants to do with all the bones. With that thought he starts swinging his axe amongst the skeletons and picking up the bones, slowly filling up the boxes.
