Owlbears natural creatures

Didn't want to ruin the IC-thread by posting there, so I'm posting it here.

There is a discussion about a certain owlbear in the Red Light Goblincave. I saw a couple of posts, presumably from rangers, about nature fighting back. But, I thought that owlbears were not natural creatures, more like a displacer beast or an ettercap for example. Some result of a foul experiment that has broken free and spread through the wild.

So what are they? Natural creatures, abberations or magic beasts?

MM calls them a Large Creature, which most likely is a creature created long ago by a demented wizard who crossed a Giant Owl with a Bear.

Ahh, good that clarifies things. I do think that demented wizard must have been dissapointed, when the bear got the owl's beak instead of his wings. Or maybe because he was demented, that was exactly what he was hoping for.. who knows.

Makes me think about the result of crossing a bear with a gelatinous cube.

The result depending on the color of the gelatinous cube, would probably be something like this.

Well I guarantee you that the person that made the nature fighting back post was unaware that owlbears were not natural creatures, so i'll get him to repost something that makes more sense ;)

Owlbears are magical beasts. They are tameable through animal empathy, its just a bit tougher.

well, most dogs aren't part of nature, they are a result of breeding...

But I would really like seeing the gelatinous bear implemented in the game. Perhaps evil Bear warriors are able to shift into this twisted creature...

Just as Ice said they can be tameable, so Lushen still thinks of them as part of nature to help fight back.
