Paladins (again)
« on: November 24, 2005, 09:33:00 AM »
So how many Paladins of Rofirein and Aeridin are there out there?  I notice quite a few applied for but not many played ;)  At least compared to the other orders.

Paladins are hard to come by, good paladins that is. The Rp involved and the strict guidelines that Paladins must follow usually leads people to go with a fighter with a good alignment then people have more freedom without the strictness a Paladins life demands.

I did see the earlier discussion on Paladins and must say that they do not have to be dumb and stupid rushing into combat evil.

Paladins do what they can to serve the ideals of their god in the best way they know how. To use an example given prior. A paladin seeing a crypt full of ghouls knows that they are a threat and that they need to be dealt with. If no one is in immediate harm he would gather allies to deal with the threat in the best manner possible to see no one gets harmed...but in the event that someone is in trouble in the crypt its not beyond thought that the Paladin knowing that it may mean harm to him would enter to rescue the person then withdraw sealing the ghouls inside then getting aid to finish them off.

In all honesty I think unless the god is fickle they would appreciate the fact that the Paladin, a person chosen for their adherence to the faith, loyalty, honour and virtue, basically the epitome of what the god stands for acts in a way to live long enough to see that the message of the god is brought to as many as possible.

I dont want to blow my own trumpet but this is an example I had happen to me the other day in a quest where I felt I acted correctly as a Paladin.

On a quest with a group on Xantril, most of us way out of our comfort zone, Tarradon was allocated the task of protecting those weaker party members at the back of the group. He knew he stood no chance against many of the creatures we fought but he stood firm to protect those he was meant to protect. When a group of creatures swarmed the big hitters in the party and swept past them Tarradon and another defender tried to hold the wave back from those behind us giving them enough time to escape the onslaught, when the other defender fell there was only Tarradon standing between the monsters and those behind him.

In this instance he could have run and left them to their fate but this is the difference between a Paladin and a fighter. Tarradon knew he could do nothing in this instance but defend as best he could to give the others time to escape. If however he could have say summoned a creature to lead the monsters away so that he could lead those he protected to safety then he would have done that. But there was no choice here in this instance and he had a mission to fulfill and a code to follow so he did the best he could.

Sorry to drift off topic, but Dezza..  I’m caught in suspense; did Tarradon manage to hold off the onslaught and survive such a heroic stand?

I had something typed out, but it didn't seem right to post it in that way. So I'll keep it short and simple.

There are very few paladins on Layo, but still I think there could be room for improvement. Alignment changes shouldn´t only take place when there is a special CDQ for it. And an alignment change has just as much reason to take place outside a quest as in a quest. I never met Tarradon Duvall for example, but in my time on Layo I only met three other paladin that I felt were properly RP´d.

Off course the alignment change only involves good or evil and lawful or chaotic acts. But I also think playing a paladin is more than just playing an alignment. Being a paladin isn´t just about being lawful. It´s about devoting each and every hour of your live to your god and its goals, if needed off course, I´m sure they get holidays.

EDIT: Definately forgot to mention Storold, protector of the weave.

Maybe because it takes way to much time to search for it.:)

Honestly I looked for it, I saw two requests for switching to paladins or Rorifein in the CDQ thread. But as far as I'm aware they haven't been done yet.

I think most players choose Toran because it's the god of paladins. I'm sure there are almost a handful of paladins of Rorifien around and as far as I know one of Lucinda. And as far as I could see, none for Aeridin. But there are a lot of chars that are played much, heck I've got a druid but I don't get much time for him because playing Daeron requires almost all of my playing time.

Maybe the DEV-team has a list somewhere to keep track?

Stillm, what is the question... total numbers of paladins or PLAYED paladins?

I was just wondering if anyone had seen active Rofirein or Aeridin paladins lately.  It was kinda fun being the only one active before I left but it also has the drawback of no comrades in arms.  I'll be back in game next week, so I was just curious.

In the past day or so, the server has seen the following:
Total Number of Paladins Making an Appearance: 21
    Number following Toran: 14
    Number following Aeridin: 3
    Number following Lucinda: 1
    Number following Rofirein: 1
Number not following any deity (humm, this looks odd, but server status shows None as diety): 2

Over a longer period, I'm sure the statistics would change a little. I have no idea how many paladins exist. These are just those that have been played for more than 5 minutes over the past day or so. Draw your own conclusions.

There was some other Drow Paladin following Lucinda, though i don't think she's played anymore. That makes 4 Lucindite Paladins.

I just got a paladin of Aeridin approved, from the first playing session I'd say I will play him for atleast a little while, he seems fun. But I still need to learn a lot, especially after playing Rufus for almost 2 years.

Ya that switch would take an adjustment.  I had to make a huge one with the Toranite I play.  Would you believe I've never even played a good character in a PW, let alone a paladin? Nor did I play a paladin in the original campaign.  This is my first time playing a paladin and thus I made alot of mistakes creating him *shrugs* but more importantly it took me a while to get his RP down.  I still struggle with it sometimes.

I think the most important thing to remember is that just like any other character, every paladin is unique.  There are the boundaries created by their code and their god, but there's no formula.

It's no different than playing a different character.  Your character has to justify all their actions to themselves.  Rather than saying "Can an LG character do that?" say "Why would this character do that?"  I don't think anyone here is incapable of answering the second question, the key is the discipline to abide by the decision regardless of OOC knowledge.

However, as for the actual topic . . .

See!  I'm not crazy!  There really are staggeringly few. :P

Elladan is a Paladin of Aeridin and, I have to say, one of the hardest characters to play well I've ever tried!

Maybe not the best choice for my first shot on Layo, but hey *shrugs*

We don't have a way to check I think, unless you want to search the forums for "paladin Rofirein" and "paladin Aeridin" and count. However, I think you can count them on two hands.

I am a proud Paladin of Aeridin, and I intend to RP Tatchien The Righteous for a loooooong time.
For reason of background and playability (healing characters close to death is always a rewarding experience), Tatchien is now lv. 5 cleric of Aeridin/ lv. 2 Paladin of Aeridin. This transition has been  smooth , and I aim for cleric lv. 5/ Paladin lv. 16.

Regarding RP-ing a Paladin, I think the strict codes and vows makes me free, and because most players have a concept of what a paladin is, I’v had many enjoyable RP moments. Tatchien The Righteous also have some character flaws (pride), occasionally creating a giggle.

I am presently awaiting a CDQ with mixafix, where I more than anything want to meet Queen Allurial in the Blackford Castle. I would also like to be given the title and responsibilities of a “Justicier”.  Layonara have a complex “Crime & Punishment” system I think all players read when they start, but I have never met anything or anyone giving life to this system.  I suggest titles like “Justicier”, “Royal guard”, and even “official seniors”, “judges” etc. could be handed out to good players, on the condition that it can be revoked for no given reason.  I would also like to invite Paladins and devotees of Aeridin on my CDQ, provided mixafix is completely OK with this, hoping to tighten the bonds among us protectors and preservers of life.

May the blessings of Aeridin be with you always!

So the complex system of Crime & Punishment is reserved for Toran and Rofirein?
Is there anyone actually using, playing, or in any other way giving life to this system?

    Could this explain Filatus' observation:
"I think most players choose Toran because it's the god of paladins. I'm sure there are almost a handful of paladins of Rorifien around and as far as I know one of Lucinda. And as far as I could see, none for Aeridin."?

    Love & light,
    Tatchien
