Do you believe in god?
« on: November 28, 2005, 03:23:00 AM »
A statistical analysis. I'm not saying something is right or wrong. I've lived in Colorado for 6 months and travelled around the US quite a bit... and I am curious about the outcome of the poll. :)

Well I consider myself a non-believer, but I do fear divine punishment  :o so I guess I DO believe in something and that's what I voted   ;)

[orange]Love this particular question, more than that I love the explanations people like to give to their religions to make it the one and only that is "real".   Actually a few days ago I was reading this very interesting article that explains and gives samples showing that all religions are based around other religions in the world. Which I always find very amusing as to the lenghts people go to say which one is right or wrong.  Personally I believe in something, I rather not give it a name nor a personality though since that has shown throughout history to cause wars and conflict, and well it just doesn't make sense that the force that created this whole thing is called Lucinda or Legolas... though those two are very close to ultimate uber cool deities ;)

*nods* Legolas is a good choice, there is no way telling whether he is male or female, so he can be chosen without risking to offend neither feminist nor male chauvinists.

The score of 21 : 9 for believing surprises me actually. But okay... I live in Denmkark, which explains some things.

Thanks for voting everyone!

*Grins* why does that surprice you 90 % of the danish population are members of the lutheranian church. But if you look at the numbers, it is 1/3 believing in god 1/3 believing in something not specified, and 1/3 atheists. Which is more atheist than I would exspect to find in the dansih population in general.

*nods* 90% are members, and pay taxes. But how many go to church and are really believers? Many would say that they are when asked on the street, but thats just because they follow the majority. In Denmark religion has become a matter of traditions to most people.

*nods* I agree, but many would still say they believe in something.

Well some have the impression/opinion that you don't have to go to church to believe.

I think so few danish people go to the service in the church is that it's so darn boring. I visited a former Reverend in the US, so we went to service on Sundays, and that was far more interesting and over a whole lot quicker than here in Denmark. Why are Danish people so up-tight about being in churches? Feel they need to dress extra nice to go and stay real quite and in total awe the whole time they are there? I just don't get it. The church we visited had a blues service thing on Friday evenings, was a Lutheran church I think. Would have liked to go see how that went, but it didn't fit in the schedule, so... but just a little thing like you were handed a leaflet with a program for the service when you came and then - woosh - all over and you could get on with the tasks of the day... a very fun experience :)

Yes. I believe in God. (Note the capitalization) Guess I always believed in God just never really got into my faith until recently.
To Beeep: Over here in America there's something really cool that more and more Churches are doing. It's called Life Teen. Think of it as a Religious Youth Group. Pretty durn cool and the Masses which are nicely labled Life Teen Masses are easy to listen to, get you involved, and are usually not boring.
First off the priest talks. He doesn't recite, or read, he talks. And he doesn't explain what things from the Bible meant back then, he explains what they mean to us now. The music is fun... it's up beat, and even if you can't sing there will be about 200 of the 400 people who will just clap along (I sware the Church rocks when that happens). And you know how people say Peace Be With You after the Lords Prayer? Well there's actually a three to five minute period where people walk around to find the people they want to say it to. I've seen people walk the length of the Church. Anywho... with that said, move to America, our Churches are more fun!  :)

nice :) well I dont think the priest recite or read either, or tells us her/his point, at least the good ones doesnt (I only think Ive met such ones), but yay the rest of the cermony is a bit.. old. And about the music, whoa I would like to experience that!
Anyhow I think talking about God in the languange of young people, alot happesn outside the church. I just think people is starting to think more about things themselves.

Ah now we, are beginning to see the picture in this poll that i was exspecting, the number of people beliving in god compared to those who don't is much higher in the US than it is in Europe. But if it compared to the "i believe in science" poll we can see that none of those that believes in religion actually disbelief science. My guess to this is that some like Niles think that intelligent design is a scientific theory, and others just don't think it is a contradiction.
Edit: Wow, that really turned out to be an ackward statement. what I wa trying to say is that the two things don't rule each other out which our poll clearly indicate.
