Rolling Dice

Hey all,

   I am new to roleplaying (and Layonara, of course) and have not yet recieved confirmation on my character. However, I have searched the forums and am not too sure how/when/why the dice roll by player characters is used in Layonara. I am familiar a bit on how D&D works with using rolls to determine stats, skills, actions, etc though. I am going to search through the manual one more time, as I could have easily overlooked it... I just want to be a more informed character before I start the game! Thanks in advance for all of your guys' and girls' help!

Basically, there's two main reasons why you might use the dice bag:
  1) When a GM tells you to on a quest or some other type event. GMs will frequently ask for search/spot checks, lore checks, spellcraft checks, INT checks, Will saves, etc.
  2) To simulate/RP actions with another PC, such as an arm-wrestling competition (strength checks).
  There are some other examples...you can use the dice bag (set to public display) to have little mini games with other players, like say who can roll the best 5d6 totals or something like that. 
  The best advice is: The dice bag will let you take full advantage of your character's skills, and let you attempt things that are just not possible through normal game mechanics.

Glad to know, I appreciate the help! Off-topic from this topic, I was also wondering if there is a faq/guide on terminology used here. I know PC is Player Character (I believe, but I am a little confused as to PrC, etc) A few of the other antonyms I have figured out from the forums subheadings.

  PrC = Prestige Class OOC = Out-of-Character IC = In-Character IG = In Game NPC = Non-Player Character ECL = Effective Character Level
  I'm sure there's more...but those just came to me

A few of the other antonyms I have ...

An antonym is a word opposite in meaning from another.  Hot and cold are antonyms.  An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a phrase or set of words.  MADD is an acronym of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.  Since PrC and OOC aren't words themselves, the word you're looking for here is abbreviations, shortened or contracted forms of words used to represent the whole.  U.S. is an abbreviation for United States, and Dr. is an abbreviation for doctor.

Hahah thanks for that grammar lesson. I know the difference between the two, I just had surgery on wednesday and I guess some of the medication for my pain is going to my head Good watching out though. I really appreciate your guys' help and am looking forward to playing with what seems to be a very friendly community!
